You don't need fingers for the strat, Jimi played with his teeth, so you've got at least 5 of them to spare right? :)
This "chicken stick"...it's what's used to jerk the propeller into motion and start the engine?
Yup, it's for those "Chickens" that are scared of stiches and blood.
I've looked at the Sig- am I correct in saying that the total price would be around 340 dollars for the plane, radio and engine?
That sounds about right, or maybe $100-$150 at the club if they have a nice used one. Check out a few of those clubs, or better yet, go to or call your LHS (Local Hobby Shop) and ask what local clubs are *BIG*. Chances are some of the employees at the LHS will be club members and they'll "tell you where to go" in a very nice way. - Joe

RE: Just how tough are these planes?
Starting with the simulator will HELP. But it won't replace getting some in-person assistance while learning. The simulator doesn't tell you what you are doing wrong. It will let you practice making the same mistakes all day.
I agree all the way. I used a sim quite a bit. Then I got out there with my trainer and an instructor. The instructor was impressed with my turning ability, until he realized all I knew how to do was crazy hairpin turns that the sim let me get away with. When I got the plane down, even with 10 rubber bands on the wing it had shifted about an inch out of it's saddle. I'm still trying to do nice gentle turns that don't pull an ungodly ammount of G's.. What I was doing was a knife edge, then pull all the way back on the stick, then back to horizontal. Really ugly turning for a trainer, but fun on a sim! - Joe

I'm with staggerwing. Go to a field, http://www.ama-dist-8.org/Clubs/Locator.html is another nice field locater. You might just be able to fly a trainer or 2, and decide what you like. Maybe even buy one you like at the field dirt cheap. Looking through catalogs and web pages for a plane is nice, but nothing beats fly before you buy. - Joe

RE: PAID FLIGHT INSTRUCTORS?
I feel both ways about the issue. Late last fall I bought a plane, 2 radios, and tons of field gear. I go to the local field, and find out that their "Every Tuesday evening beginners classes" have ended for the year. So I'm stuck with driving 30 miles to the field on weekends and hoping there is a trainer there, and that I'm not bothering him. I'd have rather paid someone. I make $30/hr, and those trips to the field that were fruitless cost me plenty in time that I could've been working. But during the summer, tuesday nights, 8? stations, lots of instructors, all for free, you gotta love it. Perfect for a non-dummy who, unlike me, waits to see if he likes flying before he buys everything. Then again, you still need AMA, and must be a member unless you're a guest. I imagine that newbies training get at least a few sessions as a guest. I think it should be offered both for free and for pay. The best way to promote the sport is however the student wants his training. My 2 cents. - Joe

RE: Is something wrong with my evo
Dude! Top Flight Power Point props are made for pusher planes, they only run backwards! I use an electric starter. Since my EVO always wanted to start backwards, I hooked up the power to the starter backwards, so now the engine starts in the right direction. I had to get rid of the EVO white plastic 3 blade spinner though. An electric starter will eat them up if you're clueless like me. Got me a metal 2 blade spinner and a 11x6 prop to solve that problem. - Joe

RE: instructor / student crashing protocol
Before my first flight with an instructor, just before I asked him if he would help me, I was watching him fly his Flip-3d. He dead sticked it into the weeds just off of the field and lost his landing gear. I got the idea that there was some risk involved real quick! I even asked him "Can I land my own plane? I see how you land them...:D " - Joe

RE: Is something wrong with my evo
Ok, I don't know what I'm talking about, even though I have the same engine, but could it have started up backwards and have been blowing out the carb? I've got the same engine, and after the first couple of tanks an instructor had to remove the limiter to get the engine leaned out right. Yours could be running rich and blowing a bit out the carb. I think you should try to repeat it with someone there who has more experience. Oh, and instead of putting on a bigger 3-blade prop, I took the baffle out of the muffler, and bought a metal 2 blade spinner, and a 11x6 2 blade prop for mine. Removed the flywheel also. Now the crazy Extra EZ 2 pulls off in about 20 feet even through a couple inches of slush..:) - Joe

RE: Yes I'm new, yes I'm lazy and yes I'm looking to buy
Just join AMA now, then go to a decent size club. Ask about who's got a trainer for sale. You might do very well. Also ask about local shows. If you can go to the show with someone from the club to pick out a nice trainer setup you might also do very well. A smart and patient shopper can get a very nice trainer with everything including a radio, all the field gear, and AMA and club memberships for your budget easilly. It's nice to see someone not posting "What can I get for $150?", and then their next message after buying and flying with no help is "I crashed my Electric AeroChicken into a car cuz it flew bad!" :) - Joe

RE: I started my plane
My neighbor kids run a go-cart (illegally) up and down the street a lot. I was out taxing my plane in the yard and they wanted to race it down the street. I was tempted, till I realized I had no brakes. I'm not sure how fast an Extra-EZ 2 would go down the street, but I know it would be way too fast to keep it close and safe. Oh, and is a small chunk of (unused) ladies panty hose rubberbanded over the carb a decent filter? I got new ones (funny feeling buying them) just so I wouldn't get any hairs down the carb.. :) - Joe

I don't lose respect for people based on stuff like that. Some of them know 100 times more than I know, and I'll learn a lot listening to them with an open mind. If they do come across once in a while as a poorly lit body part and cause me pain, I just put some cyber Prep-H on the message and I don't get upset. I'll b1tch and act stupid on occasion when I'm on the rag. But my next message might be something that is a lot of help to someone. Used trainers are great, not only do you save a couple hundred, you can still have a nice trainer, but get an 8 channel radio instead of a 4 channel with the money you saved. Trainers can be thought of as cheap and disposable, but a nice radio will work with all your planes in the future. - Joe

About half of what I read on here is how the Irvine 53 loves a 12x6 prop. The term "Stump Puller" was used a lot. That's what I'm going to try on my US 40 as soon as the snow melts off. Supposedly I'll end up with a 6-6.5 pound plane and 7-7.5 pounds of pull. I hope I'm right? [sm=confused.gif] - Joe

There's the price thing, and the fact that so many of the old timers swear by OS. They could make an engine with a remote needle valve that took a torx driver, took a special expensive OS Only glow plug, and needed 30% fuel, and people would still buy it. - Joe

Here's a hint I learned from repairing HP printers. When putting a self tapping screw back into a hole it was in, turn it counter clockwise a bit, till you feel it drop back into it's original threads, then turn it in. This stops you from cutting a new set of threads each time you put the screw into the hole. - Joe
