SuperCub: new design scratch bilt nostalgia
[image]Hi gang. The hermit's back with a rare post but at least an accomplishment. Built a twice size Cub to remember my mis-spent control-line youth. Scratch built to my own plans, this 36in span Super Cub PA11 is pulled by a 57yr old OK Cub 049! Has Sanwa SD-5G, hollow 6mm depron wing w/ spruce spar, (built sandwich style with sheets sandwiching spar and ribs between), 12 oz AUW, unique cabin structure that gives the open-air space-frame look and accents the skylite window. Plus, (of course) it has that classic 50's "2-tone paint" scheme! I even added rivets. I got nostalgic about my long gone Walt Musciano / Scientific Models 18 inch hollow log ukie, which this very motor once flew! Will post a fresh photo after I finish the dash, struts, under carriage shocks, etc. If time permits, will eventually post the sequence of build photos.

RE: APC Props and Cox shafts
I have a stash of used-up / broken plastic ballpoint inkpen parts, some of which need no extra sizing to fit the hole and the 5-40 screw. I prefer the hard plastic for the confidence it lends that it will not worsen any out of balance condition. APCs are great. Their efficiency seems to allow over-propping (to clear large cowls) and seems to milk all the power out of our small engines.

RE: 1/2a interest level
I fly exclusively 1/2a , 1/4a (unless its someone else's plane). I love the added tech challenge of doing what VERY few others (or no-one) has with the little gems. See my fleet at my profile page and gallery. http://www.rcuniverse.com/community/profile.cfm?memId=317472&section=gallery Thanks for the idea of the interest level poll!

RE: Electric to Glow Conversions
My first conversion had to be cheap and easy. I picked a GWS foamy Mitsu Zero fighter, added an integral-tank C*x reedy mill (Babe Bee type). See 2 pixs at my member profile page, under 'GALLERY'; http://www.rcuniverse.com/community/profile.cfm?section=gallery&memid=317472 You can cover the sanded foam with dilute white glue and japanese tissue. (colored if you like)... then the foam will take lite coats of (yep thats right) DOPE! [X(] (try this first on a foam cup). Make needle valve and glow plug contact extensions to retain the full cowl. Be sure to provide air exits at rear of cowl. Certainly an inexpensive ( in $ and time) intro to E2G conversions. (PS; tip; check the decalage on the zero. Early copies were wrong.)

RE: Electric to Glow conversion
I suggest a review of my conversion before deciding on your first one. Its a GWS foamy Mitsu Zero fighter with an integral tank C*x reedy mill. See 2 shots at my member profile page, under 'GALLERY'; http://www.rcuniverse.com/community/profile.cfm?section=gallery&memid=317472 You can cover the sanded foam with dilute white glue and japanese tissue. (colored if you like)... then the foam will take lite coats of (yeh thats right) DOPE! [X(] (try this first on a foam cup). Make needle valve and glow plug contact extensions to retain the full cowl. Be sure to provide air exits at rear of cowl. Certainly an inexpensive ( in $ and time) intro to conversions. PS; tip; check the decalage on the zero. Early copies were wrong.

RE: How do you fly CL?
Yes BL, used a 'clip' to *.BMP from my 2D cad application. Then Filled colors with M-soft Paint accessory. Then converted BMP to JPG. the red and white LM, is NOT mine (but a great example) . I ripped it from another site (I think ) some time ago. Hope the owner won't mind. It inspired me to start thinking U/C again. No flights yet (just R/C) but I keep messin with it. Not much of a typist here, I think I'll revert to spectator. Thanks for the comment.

RE: How do you fly CL?
Flew this ukie as a kid. A Musciano "HOLLOW LOG" by Scientific called Little Mercury. Made a removable wing with wings for stunt and sport. Think I'll build another. (Hope the upload worked)
