RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Hello Whitewolf, My solution to the radar drive was to use an old servo which I took apart and bypassed the potentiometer. I mounted the servo under the owners cabin roof and used a piece of control inner push rod up through the brass tube used as the front leg of the radar tower. I hope this helps. Chuck

Hi Rich, I wish you all the best on your trip to Tarrytown. Don't forget your camera. Please keep us posted. Sailing season is drawing to an end so Dauntless should soon get some attention. Chuck

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Ahoy Whitewolf and fellow boatwrights, The yellow glue being used in my shop is: Titebond II Premium Wood Glue. Franklin International Columbus, Ohio, USA. Questions about Titebond call 1-800-347-glue. Rich I cant wait to see your dauntless decals and your tape boot stripe. The vertical planking shown on page 4 was not plywood, But is the wood supplied by Dumas in the kit. the two darker planks are cherry because I ran out of the supplied wood due to some wrong cuts. Always measure twice and cut once.[&o] Chuck

Hi Rich, Please document and photograph your procedure for the white boot stripe, especially the area where the boot stripe crosses the spray rail. I have been busy all summer working on sailboats. The White Rose M.Y. C. members keep me going with repairs and alterations to their various Yachts: EC12s, Star 45s, Fairwind 900 and Skipjack.Thank you on your continued postings on "Dauntless." Hello Rich, You are an inspiration! Makes me want to get back to work on my "Dauntless". Sailing season started on April 5th so that takes up a fair part of my BOAT time. Keep up the good work! Chuck

Hi Rich; I don't know how you come up with all these new research items, but your "do-overs" are hard to keep up with. Are you going to narrow the bridge roof in the center or will you need round the bridge window corners all over again? Keep up the good work and keep the photos coming. Chuck

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Hi Rich; Merry Christmas to you and yours! After you get your water flowing, you might want to mount a pair of venturies near the transom to suck in air to create the foggy mist of water cooled exhaust. Make two stand pipes to supply the air and use larger tubing after the air inlets so that water does not go up the air stand pipes, but pulls the air in. Play around with a soldering iron and some different sizes of tube to get the effect you want. MAYBE? Chuck

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Hello WhiteWolf; I used a 5/4" white pine board to build on. I taped white paper to the board then laid out the building lines and covered all with plastic wrap, "Saran Wrap". Parts S1 and S2 were nailed down with 1/2" wire brads. I do not like to rely on magnets to hold parts in place while installing ribs, etc. The cabins may be built first if you like. Read the from the beginning this thread to help you decide how you want to treat the front cabin windows, the bridge cabin corners and the bridge deck floor elevation as these items are not part of the "Dumas Plan". Happy building Chuck

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Hi Boatwrights; On my plan the die cut sheets show only 3 plank "C"s, but you need 6 to complete the hull. I just wanted to help you get all 6 plank "C"s with your order. When I build the next "Dauntless" I will partly split the plank "C"s to help them conform better with the curvature of the forward ribs. Happy building and happy Holidays. Chuck

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Hi Whitewolf; There is no booklet with the kit. Just one page of instructions printed on both sides, The supplied parts are listed in the job steps. There is one plan printed on both sides. The print is aprox. 1/2 actual size. The print also has a diagram on each side, showing all of the die-cut parts. If you will send me your E-mail address and list of missing parts I may be able to help you out. Chuck

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Hi Whitewolf; I am building "Dauntless". When I started a friend asked if I would build one for him so I purchased enough 1/8" birch plywood to make another boat. I made patterns of all the kit parts. I am recuperating from a hernia operation, but I will try to get out to my shop tomorrow to check the inventory for you. When I read your e-mail about the contents of your kit it seemed to me that someone put a lot of balsa wood in the box to take up space. There is little if any balsa in the original kit. Chuck

Hi Rich; Aren't you glad S&S didn't include all sliding pocket doors. It is nice that you can ballast with all that nice detail instead of lead. Keep up the good work and keep the photos coming. April 9th is "D Day" for lumbar surgery. Wish me luck. Chuck

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Hello Tom; Welcome aboard! As far as aluminum is concerned super glue and epoxy are a little less technical than TIG welding but you have planted the seed of thought. There is a TIG welder in my boat shop. Dumas kits are supplied with very course grained plywood which is hard to finish. When you cover the wood with Fiber glass and epoxy the grain fills well and the grain color still shows through very well. The glass cloth disappers completely when wetted out with epoxy. When are you going to jump in and join the fun of building? Chuck
