RE: CO2 extinguishers
Ah yes So many experts, so many opinions . . . There are many different halon compounds; only a few are used in fire extinguishers. The commonly used extinguishing agents are Halon 1011, Halon 1211, Halon 1202, Halon 1301, and Halon 2402. Halon 1301 is considered the least toxic, but also the least effective of the five for fire suppression. The US Army Corps of Engineers came up with the numbering system. First digit = # of carbon (C ) atoms in the molecule; Second digit = # of fluorine (F); Third digit = # of chlorine (Cl); Forth digit = # of bromine (Br); and Fifth digit = # of iodine (I). For example Halon 1301 has one carbon atom, three fluoride, no chlorine, one bromine, and no iodine. The key term associated with Halon is "toxicity" - thankfully since our use would NOT be in a closed area there's not much to worry about. However, in concentrated volumes there are issues: - Central Nervous System - Inhaling high concentrations of halon gas can cause dizziness, tingling in extremities, and in severe cases, unconsciousness. - Cardiovascular Effect - Exposure can cause cardiac sensitization. Cardiac sensitization occurs when a chemical causes an increased sensitivity of the heart to adrenaline producing sudden life-threatening, irregular heartbeats and even heart attack, in severe cases. Irritation of exposed skin and eyes may also result from exposures to Halon. But here's the kicker: Stratospheric ozone is depleted by halons and other ozone-depleting substances . . . [doh] Bottom line? I'll use CO2 over Halon any day. Shop around for CO2 - our grand kids will thank you for it. [:)]

RE: NiZn battery question
ORIGINAL: SinCityJets Okay, here's the deal on the new NiZn batteries. As many of you know, I stay up on the battery technology....mainly because I get bored. Anyway, they are a higher voltage, 1.6 as has been stated above. The voltage issue alone makes them not a good candidate for transmitter packs. 8 x 1.6 = 12.8 volts! . . .
From a non RC perspective, there are some consumer electronics applications that use throwaway AA batteries (1.5V) where these cells could be ideal as their higher cell voltage might not be an issue.
ORIGINAL: E.N.T. Remember the neloops are 2000mamps, not 1.6. ENT
Eneloops are 1.2V/cell; the NiZn cells are 1.6V - if I've done the math correctly the capacity of the NiZn cells is around 1500mAH compared to 2200 for the Eneloops ...
ORIGINAL: HarryC Add weight in the root. Balance it at the pivot, not in front.
I didn't see anybody mention the need to determine MAC (mean aerodynamic chord) yet. I've found the "sweet spot" for the pivot (and therefore balance) point is around 27% relative to the MAC.

RE: Need help on BAE Hawk Camo paint
Yep, those are the color nmbrs for the most popular camo' versions of the Hawk. There's a more prevalent desert camo' version as well. If you're looking for tail number-specific examples, you might try a Google search on "BAE Hawk fighter photos" and click on the Images hyperlink when the results come back. Aside from RAF birds, both the Saudis and ROK AFs have Hawks painted up in camo' schemes with the colors you mention. I did the ROKAF version of the Hawk (with an FD3 67 turbine) but I'll be darned if I can find any photos. [:o] Mike

RE: Concentric Pitot-Static Tube
Hello, John. Thanks for the reply. Yes, the first place I looked was the Eagletree product listing. The example you give is best suited for a wing leading edge placement (i.e., outside the wash of a propellor). The 90 deg. bend in yours is a bit tricky given the concentric nature and relationship of the pair of tubes. I'll revisit the source(s) you mention and see what I can come up with. Cheers. Mike

Concentric Pitot-Static Tube
The RCJI June/July 2006 issue had a review article by John Wright of the Eagletree "Seagull Pro' system. John's installation featured a right angle concentric pitot-static tube (like the big boys use) but I can't find any construction details to replicate what he fabricated. The RCJI review can be found at: www.eagletreesystems.com/reviews/rcjireview.pdf. Can anybody roll in with some help? Thanks. Mike

Futaba 72MHz Rcvr Antenna Length
I need to replace/restore some Futaba R319 and R149 receiver 72MHz antennas that were cut to work with aftermarket base-loaded whip antennas. I don't have any other unmod'd rcvrs laying about to compare against. My recollection is that, independent of the freq band, these antennas are typically between 39 and 41 inches in length. Correct? Thanks for any replies. Mike

9303 Delta Elevon Setup Hassle
OK, I've got a 9303 and I go directly to page A13 in the manual to set up the elevons on my Rookie II jet. The left and right wing elevon servos are plugged into the correct ports (ELEV and AILE, respectively) on the AR9000 receiver. I'm thinking this is a piece of cake... wrong. I had to reverse *both* the L and R elevons to obtain correct surface deflection for pitch control - but then, of course, the ailerons are now reversed from what they should be for correct roll control. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the correct deflection for roll. Dohhhh. What in the heck did I miss? Is there some other mix I need to program? Any clues would be appreciated. Mike

RE: Sanyo Eneloop Battery Information
Someone had posted that these batteries do not like to be overcharged, so I don't think I would put them on a trickle charger and just leave them there, especially if they did not need much of a charge. Chad
Agree. The only reason to leave non Eneloop-flavored NiMH packs on trickle is/was because of the contentious self-discharge rate. Otherwise, we need to remember that the Eneloops want to be treated like NiMHs: (1) Charge at a reasonable rate, around 1/4C, and take your time doing it; (2) It takes about 3 cycles for them to develop their muscle tone. I've put together a couple of packs for my txrs and so far everybody is happy with no self-discharge to speak of.
