RE: Sebart Wind 110
Scorpion motors work great on this plane. Both of the ones I have flown are using Scorpion. They have great support as well, just give Lucien at Scorpion a call. You will see that he will spend time giving you information prior to the sale, and this attitude extends to warranty issues as well.

RE: Neu motor question
In my opinion Neu motors are the best electric motors one can put in a Pattern plane. Not just because they are so efficient, and well made, but because of the way they work. I find the throttle on Neu inrunner, geared motors to be smoother, and more progressive than any outrunner I have ever tried. This means that the application of throttle will upset the plane less. After having flown Neu motors for a few years now, I find the outrunners feel "jumpy" to me. Neu has recently released a motor specifically for F3A. It is the result of a long development and testing program. APC has even released a prop optimized for this setup. If you are thinking of getting a Neu, why wouldn't you just get the F3A motor? The F3A motor is in the 15XX series. The 19XX series would be way over kill. A friend of mine had a 19XX motor that he put in his Valiant, he switched to the F3A motor last week, and is much happier with it. Just so you know, mounting a Neu inrunner will require a significant amount of work on the Wind 110 compared to mounting an outrunner. But you will have a motor perfect for World Class Competition should you ever decide to upgrade to a full 2 meter plane.

I love Neu motors, but lots of extra work to mount the inrunner. I don't think he feels confident in taking that on at this point.

Hey, the way things are going, by 2015 we may still have some IC in our planes, but it will probably illegal to drive an IC powered car to the World Championship. LOL!

RE: Is EP ready to downsize to 8s?
ORIGINAL: aerobear
ORIGINAL: serious power ....But seriously we have a situation where there is no limits on IC powerwise for a number of years.......
Please forgive the post snip. There is a noise limit that applies equally to IC and electric. The noise limit is effectively a power limit. The lower vibration from electric power produces less noise from the airframe. This lets the electric plane devote a greater portion of the noise budget to producing thrust. Also, the electric has no exhaust noise. DOUBLE discrimination against IC! What can be done to make this more fair for IC fliers? :) I think the rate of battery improvements will outpace the rate at which we could make rules changes to keep things equitable for everyone.
I'm not sure what is meant by "keep things equitable for everyone". Why are we wanting to protect any particular power system? This is like having a rule to protect those who like wood airframes insead of composite. It would seem most equitable to have very simple rules. Size, take off weight, noise, the same for all competitors regardless of power plant, or construction. What else is really needed? The better technology will eventually dominate.

RE: Electric Power Suggestions
I notice on your poll you are specifying a 10S setup. I really think you would be better off keeping the plane light by using an 8S setup. It helps with the downline speed among other things. The Scorpion motor in the one I have been flying is S 4025-16. Light, and plenty of power. You may want to add that option to your poll.

RE: Sebart Wind 110
I have flown a Blue one a lot. No problem with visibilty for me. Real 20 C batteries work very well. A lot of manufacturers are not too accurate in their C Ratings. I have had very good luck with the Rhino 4900 packs from www.hobbycity.com. They out perform some of the higher rated brand names, and are far cheaper. The one I fly started with the recommended setup. I was not too impressed with it. The Scorpion setup performs much better in my opinion. I remember that the Scorpion did require some small modification, that the owner said was very easy to do. It should not be a problem in making your choice.

RE: Is EP ready to downsize to 8s?
I am a relatively new Pattern Flyer so take my opinions with a grain of salt. First, I will admit that my view of the cost of Pattern Flying is probably "colored" by my prior sport of auto racing. The budget was often in the hundreds of thousands for a race weekend. Of course, I was just a driver, so wasn't writing the checks. However, from that perspective Pattern flying seems affordable, even though no one else is going to pay for me to fly at my skill level. LOL! I fly an electric powered Passport on 10S. I am pretty confident that, although going to 8S is possible, it would not save me a penny. I would not be inclined to reduce power or flight times. This means I would have to modify my setup with different equipment. Primarily, I would have to come up with a setup that depended on AMPS, rather than Volts for my power. This means that I would have to buy a more expensive ESC. Since the power from a battery is a function of the "C" rating, I would have to buy higher rated batteries, of larger capacity. These batteries would not last as long, and would likely cost more. My guess is that I would spend more money, and end up with a plane that performs the same as my current setup. Just like in auto racing, rules that are written to contain costs must be considered very carefully. In fact, they rarely work. To attempt to limit costs by setting an 8S limit is too simplistic an approach to work. Just my opinion.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9ch / 2.4 Radio for Pattern
I have played a little with a pre-release version of this radio. It has features in line with the top end of the JR/Futaba radios. The programming is surely up to the task of the others, and would take care of even the most demanding pattern competitors. The case felt good in my hands, and the gimbals were nice and smooth, but it was using the stock spring tensions, I like them much stiffer. In the end, whether this radio turns out to be a bargain will depend on quality issues like dependability, and radio link quality, that won't be known until it has been in the hands of many users over a good period of time. I really liked the programming features, and hope everything else lives up to expectations.

RE: JR charging plug needed
Be careful buying one of the stock charging plug setups, you will fry your radio. JR has the polarity reversed from what is considered standard for all other transmitters. For the life of me, I've never understood why they did this. Jr does make a polarity adapter that you could solder up to work with your field charging setup. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=JRPA026

RE: Comp ARF Valiant
I believe that it is Bryan's design on the Valiant that both the wing, and stab incidence are set at the factory, and not adjustable. You only need to move the CG, and trim the elevator to end up with a zero mix plane.

RE: Comp ARF Valiant
The first Valiant in our area made it's debut yesterday. It was a perfect San Diego day for the maiden at the SEFSD all electric field on Mission Bay, sunny skies, and light winds straight down runway. Bruce Brown's father Chuck did the build, and as expected did a very neat job of it. After a thorough pre-flight, Bruce put in in the air. The plane was set up with the CG in the center of the wing tube, and required a couple of clicks of up trim. Bruce did a few passes, and felt so comfortable with it, immediately flew the Masters sequence. It was clear that the plane was just a touch nose heavy at this CG, so on subsequent flights he moved the Cg back to where it was about 1/18" behind the center of the CG. I did not get a chance to fly it, but Bruce was very happy with it. Tracking was very good, and rolling performance was incredible. Bruce is very happy at this point, and his flights looked almost competition ready right away. Bruce didn't spend much time trimming using Bryan's "no mix" method (something I am very interested in), as he plans to put the plane on a diet before doing the serious trimming. The plane was built mostly using parts Bruce had on the shelf. Using these parts it came out quite a bit overweight. He mentioned it was around 12.5 pounds in this configuration. Bruce is planning on making some big changes in the setup. He currently is using the big Neu 1515 2Y inrunner motor with the large gear box, heavy home made motor mount, two large receiver packs, two switches, a batshare, and a few other pieces that are adding weight. He is planning on a new lighter weight setup using the Neu F3A motor, no switches, small Lipo RX pack, a lighter motor mount, and removing some of the trays that are unneeded in an electric setup. My guess is he will drop a pound pretty easily. Still, in order to keep this model under 5Kg looks like it would take some serious weight engineering during the build. I am interested to see how other people's builds go in regard to weight. Below are pictures of Bruce and his new Valiant, the electronic setup, and of course the mandatory beauty shot.....

Plane is not mine, but I may get a chance to fly a sequence or two with it. The guy who owns it is not Internet savvy, so I am posting for him. I also contacted Byran on his behalf to ask some question during the build. Bryan took some time and had a long phone conversation with him about setting up the plane and other questions. Thanks Bryan, he was very greatfull, and impressed that you took the time. Jason, whats with the "T" Cannalizer in the last photo, is part of the kit or something you added? Did it improve the plane?

Passport Deluxe from CA Models. All Composite fuse, foam sheeted wings. I bought it used from a guy who tried to use glow in it. It started developing problems from all the vibration. I converted it to electric, and it has been solid. The Passport probably should be sold as an electric only airframe.

RE: Sebart Wind 110
John, If you already have 6S packs, and want to run 8S, just get some 2S packs that match your 6S, and run them in series. There is no reason the cell counts in the series packs have to match. It's just the Capacity, and C rating that must match. 2S packs should be very inexpensive. I really think the Wind 110 needs the power of the 8S setup to preform at it's best.

The best flying sub 2 meter pattern plane I have flown is the Sebart Wind 110. But it is a little expensive, and difficult to get right now. Next on my list would be the Hyperion 90e Helios. nxtdoor, The three Wind 110s that fly in my local area were all bought from Europe and shipped over here. They say the cost is about the same as getting one in the U.S. even after shipping. The guys here all gave up trying to work with the U.S. distributor. I have no personal experience with them, so I'm not trying to bash them. Having flown, and even competed with the Wind 110 (borrowed), I can say without reservation that it is an excellent plane, and worth the trouble of ordering from overseas. Don't give up.
