RE: heard lots of bad stuff about Redcat....BUT
Well, I haven't been saying anything on here for a while now but I just wanted to ring in here and say that there are many good points being made on both sides of this discusion IMHO. I own Nitro Powered Traxxas and Redcat trucks & buggy, neither are top of the line vehicles in price or quality in some areas but I have had a huge amount of fun with each and neither breaks the bank when they do break, parts are cheap and easy to come by so for me that is a good thing. Like most everything made there is always good and bad points in design and just like all the rest, in my experience the Redcat products have good and not so good just like most of the rest, major difference is that the Redcat products have such a lower initial cost that it is well worth it IMO to fix the not so good with some upgrades as the weak areas fail and you'll still have a less expensive RC than many and it's now better than some of the higher priced ones when they come out of the box in some areas of coarse, Shrug....... I'll conclude my opinions here by saying that if Redcat's products cost the same as the better quality cars, buggies and trucks then people would have a legitimate quality complaint, but the fact is they're much cheaper in almost all cases and they are avertised to be more of an entry level RC line so why don't we just come to grips with the fact of what the Redcat line up is all about and enjoy our economical cheap and easy to fix Redcats and if we have the money to throw at the "high dollar" stuff then by all means do so and enjoy them as well, no need to put downeither one in my opinion, most people buy what they can and do the best they can with what they have, if you like your Redcats.......who cares what anyone else thinks about them, if you like what you have that's all that matters, I hate popularity contest on every level personally......[:'(] I hope everyone has wonderful Christmas and a wonderful New Year..! Peace, 1omf

RE: interested in mixing their own fuel? you need this!
ORIGINAL: Goatcrapp Seconded. I make my own now - because quality nitro is not available locally (and i don't consider traxxas fuels to be quality - i never noticed more varnish in my engines than after running a while with traxxas blue fuel) Keep in mind - some states have HEFTY hazmat fees for shipping nitro. In my case, i get hit with a state and city fee, so it isn't economical to make my own nitro until i'm ordering nitro in a full case of 4 gallons or more (same fee regardless of amount) understanding that 4 gallons of nitro will make an IMMENSE amount of fuel - its good to partner up with a ocal RC group or friends, to split the cost and the fuel ( the amount of fuel would go bad since it absorbs water over time... and would take years for me to go through on my own unless i got into big rc planes or something) I use castor and syntehtic - Klotz techniplate as the majority of the oil mix, and a smaller percentage than listed above, as a safety measure. Organic oils have a higher burn temp... that's right - a syntehtic oil will burn sooner (hence cleaner) in the combustion process.. which is a good thing and a bad thing. Good if everything is running perfectly.. it'll be a cleaner burn. Less varnish, less mess, etc. Bad because - lets face it... we all tend to push our machines.. castor oil is better when you're running too hot, or lean, etc... it'll cling around for that last bit of dieseling to coat things before being burned up. If you can get high concentrate nitro locally (try drag strips) then making your own is a MUST. you get to control the quality of the product, and save money too. If you have to ship it, and get hit with hazmat - it can still work out per gallon... but you have to order enough to justify it, and almost certainly split the quantity with someone.
Yes to all said here...... I have a good friend that flies the larger planes with 60-91 engines so he uses a lot more fuel than I do with my stuff, we will be making fuel up for his planes and my trucks & buggy, we know several other fellas that fly planes a lot so we may end up with a 3-4 way split on raw materials which could make it very reasonable for all of us in the long run. great addition to this info. RE: WOW....Lot's of Hate for Redcat online
I just want to say here that I have Traxxas and Redcat, I have to work on each of them and they will all break, they all have plastic parts end to end and they all have very small screws that screw into plastic which has and will give trouble from time to time. Over all I have had more repair issues with my Redcat vehicle when I first got it, but I have since upgraded some things and shimmed the diffs which were my biggest issue in the begginning. 2 days ago I set up a ramp out back that will enable me to get 20+ foot jumps out at 4+ feet off the groung, I ran 4-5 tanks of fuel through it that day and did nothing but ramp it turn around get another run at it and ramp it again over and over, and some of my landing were the kind that made me cringe..........and guess what.........not a single issue everything still nice and tight, everything still looks as good as it did when I started the afternoon with it.......... All of this durability was accomplished by upgrading the screws in the front Steering Knuckles, shimming the diffs and adding some high quality grease to the ring & pinion gears, I also added 7000wt diff fluid in diff cases front and rear..... and I have a 39T Steel Spur gear which I highly recommend....... For the Backdraft 3.5 so far no servo issues or problems with the electronics, Knock on wood.......! so far the only 2 parts I've had to replace is the spur gear which I trashed jumping it and not getting off the throttle quick enough and 1 pinion gear in the rear gear box, and it was a factory defect issue which redcat quickly replaced for me and even sent me extra parts to completely rebuild both diff units......which they happily did with no questions asked and the gear boxs are not even "officially" covered under warranty. Now being pretty new to this hobby.....when I started having these troubles at first I was upset and I said stupid things and made a couple bashing post about redcat products venting my frustration which I quickly retracted and appoligized for realizing just how dumb it was of me to do that being I basically got sucked into the mood by another redcat basher who had nothing good to say at all about anything the best I remember...... As I type this post my Backdraft 3.5 is the only RC I have that is running and could be fired up and raced or bashed right now, both of my Traxxas Trucks are broke down, one with a carb. issue and the other from a bad driver issue......35+ MPH straight into a cement block does wonders for the front suspension..........LOL I can quickly point out several things about all of my vehicles that I wish were better and all RC's have their strong points and their weak points from what I have seen..........and IMO Redcat vehicles are by far the best overall quality bang for the buck........yes there may be overall better quality in some other vehicles but like I said for the money I dont see anything else that can be matched apples to apples with most of the Redcat products......! Redcat racing is doing there dangdest to give us a very good product for a great price compared to many other who will give us a very good product at a somewhat over priced vehicle IMO, Redcat has made it to where people who have never been able to get into the RC hobby can do so now at an affordable price and I think from what I have seen and heard with the NEW Redcat Buggy and Stadium Truck that they are just another good example of this point. I'm looking forward to the day I have the chance to raise the eyebrows of a " Major name brand " owner with the speed & overall performance of my Redcat Racing Backdraft 3.5 Buggy.........! I like it more everytime I take it out....very enjoyable buggy handle sgreat and is very quick.... My extra long 2 cents......sorry......I got a little long winded here! Peace

I wonder if the RC-Bearings.com - your best low-cost source for Associated bearings associated T4 bodies will fit on the XTG ST? If so this might be a good upgrade for when the original body gives up the ghost...... What didi you mean buy MICRO RX Hack u 2? Will a standard RX not fit in the RX compartment of these vehicles?

RE: interested in mixing their own fuel? you need this!
Mixing ones own fuel can make sure that the fuel is always consistent in all ingredients, initially the cost for all of the components is more than just buying a gallon or two of fuel at the LHS, but look at it this way a mix that is 15% Nitro 8% Syn. oil 5% Castor oil 72% Methanol uses..... Nitro: 19.20 Fluid OZNitro Methane $42.00 per Gallon will make 6 1/2 Gallons at this amount Syn. oil: 10.24 Fluid OZ-Syn oil $10-$12 per Quart ( approx.) will make 3 1/4 gallons Castor oil: 6.40 Fluid OZ-Castor $20.00 per Gallonwill make 20 Gallons Methanol: 92.16 Fluid OZ $3 - $5 per 1 gallon-will make 1.4 Gallons So to mix 1gallon of home brew fuel the cost will be roughly....... Nitro$6.46 Syn oil-$3.52 Castor oil-$1.00 Methanol-$2.85 Total cost $13.77 per Gallon With the initial cost of supplies being $77.00 which will make a minimum of 3 1/4 and if you go all castor it will even be cheaper... The more Nitro used is what drives the price up quick but even at 20% Nitro the cost will only change a couple of bucks per Gallon This is why in the near future I plan to mix my own, plus it will give me something extra to mess with and I can mix a quart at a time if I want and experiment at figuring out the mixture my engines really like the best.....

RE: My redcat buggy froze!
they will spin if it is idling a bit high, are they spinning so fast that they are ballooning up in the middle or are they just spinning a medium speed...? if tires are ballooning up that is too high and is not good, ned to back the idle screw out until it calms down a bit. also make sure the LSN is not set too lean as wellyou might back it out 1/4 turn and see if the idle goes down a bit if so leave it there until you get 3-4 tanks run through it.

RE: My redcat buggy froze!
ORIGINAL: Go Gators ok yes i need to richen it then but which direction do i screw the carb? I have allready ruined an engine by running too lean. do i turn it clockwise or counter? Thanks John if anyone has links to the vids i would gladly appreciate it. Thanks Again!!!!
Counter clockwise....................! like your unscrewing a light bulb........counter clockwise raises the HSN ( high speed needle ) farther up out of the main jet which allows more fuel to enter the engine. Clockwise will close the gap between the needle and the jet causing a leaner mixter which means the air to fuel ratio is then to high, ( to much air intake for the amount of fuel the engine is getting until it starts breaking in it will act a little like it is running fat / rich even if it isn't, it will be a little boggy and sluggish until it get broken in a bit from my experience so just make sure when it's idling that you can hold your finger about an inch away from the exhaust opening and get it oil soaked pretty quick, I set mine so that even when idling it is spitting out raw fuel a bit for the first 2 tanks I run through it ....... dont rev it very high WOT until you get a couple tanks run through it and then I'd start running it around but not all out just give it time to seat and mate all of the surfaces in the engine and then on the 5th tank tune it good and have some fun...

Just sharing the carnage... Oh My....!
This isn't about a Redcat product, I'm so glad this wasn't my Backdraft 3.5....., but I just wanted to share my misfortune a few minutes ago. 35+MPH into a concrete Block is NOT a good thing guys.......LOL Well, I desided to see how my Nitro Sport ST would run on my new 15% N. 18% oil fuel mix and after I got-ur tuned up real nice it works great.....runs like a champ.....or at least it did until the sun got in my eyes and I lost track of where the truck was pointed at WOT........! Oh yeah, I freak-in nailed a concrete block at full bore and it was not pretty, busted bulk head, busted shock, busted caster block....that sucker stopped so quick and cracked so loud I just started laughing because I knew I really trashed some stuff this time.........LOL anyway just wanted to share my big wreck of the week... well back to the work stand this one goes....dang-it! interested in mixing their own fuel? you need this!
There is a very cool program I found that will automatically figure all the measurements in US or Metric for mixing your own Nitro fuel. This is a FREE shareware program, I have it and I really like it very simple to use Just go to the link I have listed and then on the left side of the page click on the WinHeli Software button scroll down and then click the winhinst.exe download button (note) it wont say "download" when the window comes up click save and you will get a warning but just go on through it by clicking ok or continue cant remember which, but anyway it will just take a few seconds to download and then you will have an easy way to figure component %'s this thing is awesome........and I'll be mixing my own fuel soon. enjoy... http://www.birdcagesoft.com

RE: 15% Nitro 18% oil PowerMaster Fuel.....!
I may have found the reason for my added throttle response on the 15/18 fuel mix..... Found this info. on the Nitro Fuel thread, posted by an ole Pro..... seems logical....... shrug! :Partial Quote: (entire quote not listed being it was about other things as well and about different aircraft engines) A much better oil ratio for some engines is 17%-20% if you're using a traditional US model oil such as Morgans or Klotz. One effect of using more oil is that it effectively raises the compression ratio. Unlike air, or fuel-vapor, oil is incompressible so effectively reduces the volume of the combustion chamber which means that the ratio of swept volume to combustion chamber volue (ie: the compression ratio) goes up. If you use more than 18% you're probably just throwing money out your exhaust pipe. I just use a high quality oil at these ratios and In effect, it's like running an extra 10% nitromethane but without the cost and without the negative hit on fuel consumption. Seems plausable that this may explain my better performance results...... and I know mine does run better on the bottom end thru WOT on the oil increase and a 5% decrease in Nitro.

Yep, all the gears in the diffs are steel/metal.......they are the same gears as used in the AFTERSHOCK 3.0, AFTERSHOCK 3.5, AFTERSHOCK 8E, BACKDRAFT 8E, EARTHQUAKE 8E, BACKDRAFT 3.5, CALDERA, EARTHQUAKE 3.0, EARTHQUAKE 3.5 Just need to pull the diff's and check the spacing to see if they need to be shimmed IMO, not always needed.....but good insurance on the diffs easy to do and doesnt take much time and also gives a chance to add some good diff oil and grease the ring & pinion gears with some high quality grease. If I had of done this to my Backdraft it would have saved me a couple of headaches in the begginning, thats the good thing about the Caldera, it shares many of the same parts as the 1/8 scale trucks and Buggies................. here's a link to the diff gear set-up listed on www.rufaster.com 's web site..........

Hope the burns this guy has can be treated with some silvadene burn cream wrapped up and then send him home to heal in a couple weeks, dang I hate burns.......I'd much rather get a gash.....spirting & bleeding all over the place than a burn.......they just last to darn long....ouch Great advice Nitro........ I dont have a Volcano or a Caldera truck but I have the Backdraft 3.5 1/8 scale and it has the 2 speed tranny, I've had ZERO..! issue with the 2 speed tranny, works great. The Caldera also having the slipper clutch will for sure help with saving the spur gear when jumping the truck around which takes some of the beating off the tranny also. From what I've read If I were to but a 1/10 Redcat 4wd Truck it would be the Caldera, more for the $'s IMO.......! just my 2 cents Peace
