DB, You mentioned filing a complaint with EBay. Mato sells from there own site. Perhaps your talking of a HL tank you bought on ebay and are having problems with that seller, not Mato. For what it's worth, I have had good coustomer service from Mato by following their guidlines. Anything I have found broke, they promply replaced it. I'm sorry to hear of your problems. Jim
ORIGINAL: YHR
ORIGINAL: Razdawg Hi guys! Well I jumped in and got me a used Heng Long PanzerKampfwagen III ausf.L sd.kfz.141/1. Not a smoke/sound model but I got it at a good price. So 1) what upgrades are recommend 2) can smoke,sound, IR be added 3) can it be upgraded to 2.4 ghz Have already ''patroled'' the backyard!
Someone should have mentioned to you right away not to buy a non smoke and sound There will be no IR on that and the electronics are no where near as good as the Smoke and sound ones. You can buy an upgrade once you have had this for awhile.
I'm sorry that I came across this thread so late. I agree 100% with YHR. The non-sound and smoke tanks are not worth it. The S and S HL's have speed control that makes all the difference. You can buy Sound and Smoke upgrade kits from Mato, but by the time your fininshed, you could have had a SanS version much cheaper. I do agree that HL is the way to go. The scale also means better outside manuverability. You can also get the metal upgrades that add more weight to your tank allowing it to operate a lot more prototypically. Buy another sound and smoke PZ III with IR and keep the non S an S for spare parts and driving practice. I wish these kind of tanks were available back when my son was 6 years old. I was stationed at Ft Hood Texas and he would spend hours playing by the patio doors just to be able to catch a military convoy heading out on exercises and of course tanks were the highlight ( for me too ). RE: A True White Elefant.
ORIGINAL: Rex Ross
ORIGINAL: EugeniRUS A white elephant is an idiom for a valuable but burdensome possession of which its owner cannot dispose and whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) is out of proportion to its usefulness or worth. The term derives from the story that the kings of Siam (now Thailand) were accustomed to make a present of one of these animals to courtiers who had rendered themselves obnoxious, in order to ruin the recipient by the cost of its maintenance. In modern usage, it is an object, scheme, business venture, facility, etc., considered to be without use or value. [:D][:D][:D]
~~~~~~~~ Well said. I didn't know that. Thanks. I have a ''white Elefant'' too. Mine has been waiting for a paint job for over a year!
When I was a kid, yard sales were often reffered to as " white elephant sales" Kinda funny how a saying or nickname goes around. Jim
RE: Tamiya PZIV overhaul + Brass Schurzen
HarveyS, Unfortunatley, my priter copier, scanner does not want to work ( I think it belongs to the Chicago teachers union ) Other wise I would sketch out what I'm talking about. What you can do is measure the plastic haddles/hangers width that came with the original side skirt kit. Find a pair of needle or regular nose pliers that have that same width somewhere on its jaw and mark it with a sharpie. Cut pieces of flat brass strip that you want to use for your handles/hangers. Place the brass on the pliers and bend down on both sides. Remove the brass use another plier ( I suggest a pair of hemostats as they have a small jaw width ) Place the hemos on the bent piece flush against the upper flat surface and bend outward. This creates your foot for soldering. Repeate for the other side and your done Believe me, it takes longer to read this then to make about ten of them. It's the same procedure I used to use to make freight car stirrups and handrails. It's simple and easy, just takes a bit of time, I would think you could crank out 30 handles/hangers in about 15 minutes. Hope my discription helps and if anyone knows how to kickstart a dell printer/copier/scanner, please let me know LOL. Jim
RE: Tamiya PZIV overhaul + Brass Schurzen
Harvey, Make a bending jig, get a six pack of beer ( OK maybe a 12 pack ) and bend them out. The brass will readily solder itself to your skirts and you can tweek (pinch) the handle to better adhear to the mounting post. I really don't think you can solder the stapkes to the brass. Could be wrong. I'm sure you'll let us know. It amazing how wonderous minds think alike. LOL Jim
RE: RC military truck
That is a very good looking truck. It would be nice to fashion it after a US 2 1/2 ton ( deuce an half). You would need to box the front fenders. Change the front bumper. Move the aircleaner to the other side and just have the bonnet protrude from the side plate. You could leave the hard top or convrt it to canvass as they had both type of cab roofs. I personnelly prefer the canvass roof as I think it looks better. To really get close to a deuce, you would also have to remove the drivers side exhaust and put a curve on the passenger side exhaust. Just some thoughts. I would love to do such a build myself as I drove a deuce for many years and think it is an outsnding truck ( looks cool too ) but I have so many other projects to finish. I don't see that I would ever have the time. Nice build and thanks for sharing. I look foward to your video. I also want echo Rex's comment on your canvass. Looks very real. Jim
All kidding aside. It would depend on what options your tank came with, ie: metal tracks, metal gears as well as the gear ratio ( 3 to 1 gears will run through almost anything, stock gears will have limitations )etc. Hope this helps a bit. Jim
An addition, For the " handles" on the inside of the skirts, I planned on using flat brass shapped in a bracket with feet extending out for solder points. I figure, how many peapole will even notice. I could also crimp the bracket to better hold onto the rail. So what do you think? Jim
RE: Tamiya PZIV overhaul + Brass Schurzen
Harvey S, You have the same idea I have. I plan on copying the kit parts on my printer/scanner ( damne thing broke , so I have to waite to get it fixed ) Then use the images as an templete to make the side skirts. Yours look great, but I have to say it appears the front is a bit foreward. Normally the cut out on the front piece bisects the drive wheel ( from what pics I have seen ). I had also planned on making the supports from brass angles and doing just as you did for the rails. You just beat me to the punch. Great looking paintjob. I believe I know what pics inspired you. Great looking tank. Does it up your surviabilty rates at all? Jim
PZ III Tensioner Help
Hi All, I need some help or maybe some guidence. I have the HL PZ III tensioner kit to put on my tank. The problem is, I can't seem to find the thread ( s) that cover the disassembly and assembly of the the track tensioners. I tried the search ( about 200 different links came up ) but just don't have the time to go through them all. Does anyone remember the threads that talk about installing this upgrade. Being it does involve some major surgery on the PZ III, I want to make sure I know what I'm doing. Thanks inadvance for the help. Jim
ORIGINAL: Green Amphibian I have seen that before, and it is a really cool video. Not sure where the water line is going to end up. I know I am going to have to add ballast to get it down anywhere near the normal waterline. My props are 1.5 in. dia. and will be completely submerged, they are normally used on slower vessels. I started out with boats too. I only have 4 at the moment. 1/32 S-100 schnellboot, 1/35 Revell PT, 1/12 PBR, and a Springer tug. The S-100 has working torpedoes and 3 brushless motors, the PT has been converted to a mid war boat, the PBR has brushless powered water jets, and the Springer is the stand by rescue boat. Herman
Cool, I have the Italeri 1/35 scale S-100 S boat. I'll have to keep you in mind when I get around to building it. I too would like to have operating torpedos, or at least operating torpedo doors. I also have the Linburg PT 109 that still needs to be built. Kinda getting back into boats. I built the Robbe PT 15 about 28 years ago ( still have it, but it needs an overhaul ). I would love to see some pics of your boats. Send me a PM an I'll send my email address. It could be that your metal gearbox has not been broken in, so it may be stiff and any commands to the wheels seem jerky once you surpass the tightness of the gear box.
