RE: DLE 170 On board starter
ORIGINAL: av8tor1977 Yeah, but there is a good size trade off in weight between the two. Which of course, means nothing if you need ballast weight anyway. I like the new starter being sold by milehighrc.com for the DLE 55. I just wonder why they used a heavy, old tech brushed motor in it instead of a lighter and smaller brushless motor. Also, it is of the constant mesh/one way bearing type. If I bought one, I would want to buy a couple of replacements for that bearing in case whatever company that is making it ever went out of business. That happens all too frequently these days.... AV8TOR
At the end of the day a brushless motor is only more efficient than a comprable brushed motor and will tend to last longer due to not having brushes to wear out. However when you mount it to an engine now you have vibration to worry about too. A brushed motor will be more durable and not require a complex speed control to operate. So you get 8 starts instead of ten on a charge and it is simpler and cheaper. Seems like a smart way to go.. But then modelers are generally more about bling than facts.. Zdz already has a turn key starter for their 160 and up twins. You could always just bust out the visa...

RE: Airworld models. Fw 190 102
I have one with a moki. And one I am setting up with a 3w106. The moki is a bit overrated but hey it is a hobby. With the moki you need the elevator seros in the stabs. With a twin you need to put all the servos as far forward as you can. Most 150 sized motors won't fit without pRotruding. Double check your measurements. Put a couple formers in the fuse. Airworld fuses are floppy. Landing gear mounts are not that strong for a reason. The wing is tender and significant reinforcement in this area mat mean just a larger hole is left behind after a bad landing.

RE: What Would You Do?...rx & tx question.
Bad batteries are probably the number two cause of crashes. Right behind the brain thumb interface. I change them out every three to four years. I run a123 packs now exclusively. When I ran Nicads I did have quite a few that would still cycle well and took a chance one spring Guess what. One failed and put 2k of plane in the swamp. Two packs and two switches go on any plane I really like.

RE: Need help, I'm stumped!
All electric motors generate noise. Either the brushes on a dc motor or the chopper circuit for a brushless motor. In this case the amps inside the servos in the wing are seeing it and are not happy. Caps on the motor may reduce it but it still will be there to some extent. Good luck. I gave up on electric retracts and went back to air.

RE: Help on airfoil design
At the size and weight you are proposing it probably won't make much difference what airfoil you use for just flying around. Be careful making the wing too thick as it can have a much larger effect on the flight characteristics than the overall airfoil shape. Since most of us control the models pitch with the elevator vice using the power settings you will need to consider the incidence- a flat wing generates lift at 0 AOA and a symmetrical wing will not.. Think of what you are going to use it for and fly it.. For a sport model you to set it up so once trimmed the throttle setting will not change the pitch.. this leads to putting downthrust in the motors, negative wing incidence relative to the tail-feathers etc, in a flat bottomed wing plane to counter the increased lift at higher speeds and throttle settings..

RE: A heads up/JR DSM upgrade
They do warn you to backup all of your models before you send in your xmitter as the upgrade may cause issues.. If the numbers on the individual antennas go up, they are not getting the signal.. I don't think that is something to ignore.. Has JR officially stated what is going on with this or is the backwards compatibility not 100%..

RE: Time to take the leap - JR12X or Futaba 12FG
I have a 12x and was a futaba user for many years.. DSMX works fine, the futaba 2.4 system works fine.. The 12x is a bit dated and its replacement will probably not be compatible with the JRs older 2.4 (spektrum dsm/dsmx) If you don't care I would wait for the updated version from JR before making a decision. The DX18 from spektrum is a game changer for price vs features.. I will probably replace my 12x in a couple years with one of these as I have a bunch of spektrum receivers and don't see a need to change modulation types... I would not buy anything without a sd card no matter what the brand at this point..

RE: Webra Bully and Walbro carb help
I would get the carb straightend out and make sure you have the timing correct before messing with the rings. I am pretty sure with a pro zinger and a can muffler that wasnt too restrictive that mine would turn 7100 with a zinger 18-10.. depending on now restrictive your muffler is you may not be that far off.. Are you sure some of the numbers guys are quoting are from running on glo?? They would turn 500-700RPM faster on glow than on gas.. Does your ignition advance the timing or is it fixed?

RE: Taylorcraft crash
If 4 threads were fully engaged the bolt should have broken before the thread striped. This isn't an ideal situation as usually you would want at least 1 diamater of the bolt to be engaged but you are right on the ragged edge where 3 threads would allow the bolt to strip before breaking and 4 threads the bolt should break before stripping. I am thinking that the bolt was probably overtightened a couple of times previously and there went the margin for error.. There shouldnt be that much load on the bolt as it just holds the wing in to the fuse unless you were flying inverted or doing a pushover?

RE: Walbro or Tillotson Carb
Tilotson carbs are fine.. Way way back a couple of manufacturers converting chainsaw motors were using the tillitson carbs that came with the powerheads they were buying.. These carbs had the RPM limiter circut start to kick in inflight and make the motor run erratic.. Once they figured out what was happening they started buying walbros cause they were cheaper instead of buying the correct Tilotson carb for what they were trying to do... This seemed to start some myth that walbros are better...

RE: cheap chinese batteries
Sorry to disagree with the majority, but the Maxamps packs that I bought did not put out what they were rated to do.. Cheap china packs would outperform them.. I test my setups with a wattsup meter by the way.. Maxamps = big no for me.. Oh and right now what i have seen as the best performance and best value are the sky lipos... A kid at our field takes of and flies a cheap f-4 edf wide open untill cutoff...all day long with 3-4 batteries.. He pops em on the charger right after he takes em out.. and off he goes again.. he is pulling 20c continually, not resting them between cycles and they dont puff and keep on working.. I tried some and was hooked... Only problem is the word is out and they are hard to catch instock...

RE: Older 70 cc Gasser - what make? It's converted to Nitro!
The carb needle seats are probably drilled out to pass the much larger flow of alcohol required to fuel the beast.. I would go to the local small engine repair shop and get a gasoline carb and order up an rcexl ignition and put it on gasoline. Also examine the single bolt prop adapter closely around the hub- There were some issues of them snapping due to poor metalurgy.

I was thinking of doing the same to my moki-even if its life was shortened. I will never run it on glow again.. What I wan't to know is if the rod off of the gas one will fit on the glow motor. Would be nice to buy a rod ready to go as to have to make my own..

RE: ZDZ 210 max RPM with 34X14 prop?
I have a 32 10 mentz and it is not enough prop but was recommended for break in by a guy who has several 210's He told me to run it for 9 or 10 gallons for break in It wil rip the 32-10 easily. If your needles are that far off from factory settings you should check to see that they aren't reversed.. This is the only walbro carb I have ever seen that had both needles with the same diamater and thread... It is easy to get them reversed.. I leaned my needles from the starting point about 1/8 turn on the high and maybe 1/4 on the low. but they were pretty close to correct at the initial settings as I recall.. I think they recommend 1-1/2 for both or maybe 2-1/2 for the low end to help it draw fuel.. I don't do 5/5/1 on this one. I choke the crap out of it till I can see gas running out the carb and then it will pop right off. I don't think you can flood this thing..

RE: Need a little BME 102 Twin Engine Help Please
I would send it to BME but I do believe that there was a guy that bought a bunch of BME parts from Keith before he sold BME and was doing repairs on older engines. WWW.ModelAircraftEngineering.com is his website. If you have a good local small engine mechanic he could probably replace the bearings.. it isn't rocket science but you need the right tools to do it.

RE: RCS 50 VT Four stroke
It has the exact same carb as a G26- don't know what the model number is but I have the two carbs side by side on my bench right now.. The pulse intake is on the cover vice thru the carb body but it is drilled and tapped in. Otherwise the same.. I think that is part of the problem with this motor.. Maybe it should have a 4stroke carb and be run off of the intake pulse? He is a bit frustrated as his has never ran worth a damn.. Even with the pump it ran no better. On the saitos they are using a 4 stroke walbro- it is different- it runs off of the vaccum of the intake vice the crankcase pressure. I would think that there would be enough crankcase pressure to properly run the walbro even with a vent line. I think this is the major problem with this motor.. You guys that r running them what are your needle settings?? Paul is three turns out on the bottom end and it still wants to run too lean on the bottom end.. Then it will go slooppy rich and then die. My g26 initially had a similar kind ofissue and when hobby services was called they immediatly sent out a new carb. I am hoping that this motor has a defective carb too.. We are going to swap out with a different carb and see if it runs better.. On the power issue.. My evolution 35- this is the first generation one on the restrictive evolution pitts muffler was spinning a mejlick 20x10 at 7700 RPM running a bit rich on the first tank of fuel.. So you guys getting 5800 on a 20x10 after break in can see the power difference..

RE: Why not transport your fully assembled aircraft to the field?
I haul my 50cc yak all the time like that. and have hauled my python and my 35%yak a couple times. Usually I just leave em assembled in the trailer but somtimes I don't want to drag 30 feet of trailer with me.. I just grab one and put it in the back of my pickup and go.. I have a box to put the landing gear on and strap the landing gear to 50feet of log chain coiled up in the bottom of the pickup.. it isnt going anywhere. I do tape the surfaces with blue masking tape before I go down the road. You don't want the surfaces to flap freely in the breeze- that will strip the servo.. I have a friend who made some nice control locks out of the flexible steel straight edges with some padding on them. He drilled holes in them and clamps em over the surfaces to hold everything in place. But he goes 25miles or so on the freeway to fly..

RE: Help us save our flying field - sign this petition
I would think that if you worked the issue correctly you could coexist with the swamp. Seems like a good buffer for flying planes. Much better than having a park next to where people could complain about the noise. Maybe you guys should try to work to be an inland in the middle of the swampland. That way the city could still show the use of the land for a buffer for a recreational activity and you could keep your field plus not worry about encroachment from soccer fields in the future.. Our field ended up next to a bird sanctuary/swamp and it has probably bought us another 10 more years of use into the future. If it wasn't there the land would have already been sold for commercial development and we would have been gone long ago...

RE: Looking for new engines
You aren't going to get a 30cc motor to swing that size a 3 blade prop. I have seen several of these tigercats and they have been heavy little piggies.. I would go as light as you can on the motors and keep everything forward to make it balance with the chosen motors.. the g26 is a nice little motor- I have an EI one and it is one of the best running motors I have ever had. If money doesn't matter I would use the RCS140's that AMR is now selling as Moki's. They will turn a 16x10 three blade fine and are super light.. Another option is hobbypeople has the mark 180 gassers on sale. They are a good motor but probably weigh in the same as the g26..

RE: In line 60cc
Probably a good running motor but who the heck wants a carb sticking out the top of the cowling.. Most of the planes this would be a candidate for probably wouldn't have a cowling big enough to hide the carb sticking up.. Look how far the carb sticks up on that p-40 in the first video.. Looks like a solution that causes more problems than it cures..
