RE: cleaned an engine in prestone and it blackened ... what to do ?
ORIGINAL: Phoenixangel You can use a brass tumbler for polishing ammo brass, you have to take everything apart and be sure all the sand is cleaned out of absolutely everything before reassembly. Depending on what polishing sand you choose, you can polish to a mirror shine or rough metal. You can use walnut or pecan shell instead of sand. This will only remove the oxidation but none of the metal itself.
Phoenixangel, would you mind explaining this process a little further? For example, what to use for abrasives, ect.? I have the equipment to do this, and would never have thought of it. Thanks.

RE: have to share room with WIFE..........
ORIGINAL: pmerritt These guys sure talk big with a keyboard in hand while little lady is in the kitchen is probably making you an antifreeze burger.  Have fun as you sit there typing insulting messages about them to your buddies.  Enjoy life when the glaucoma sets in, the balsa glue has worn out and the monokote won't stay ironed on any longer wondering why your last trimester of life is so lonely.  When that little lady has found her a real man that knows the priorities of buidling a long term relationship and placing those priorities in order, you'll be missing that special someone to hold hands with and rock on the porch with as the two of you reminence the good old days.    Married almost 30 years to this wonderful lady that knows my love for this hobby the answer is, wife/relationship first, hobby second.  If you've forgotten the raincoat, it's wife 1, kids 2, hobby (probably never).   For the guy with one room neediing to share with the spouse, it's called time management.  When she's in there, you watch tv, mow the yard, get on RCU and window shop, change the car oil.  While she's occupying that room, make her a nice cup of tea, take her a little snack, put a flower on her table.  I bet the next time you want to go flying, she'll help load the SUV!  When her favorite reality tv is on and the room is empty, the room is yours.  When the lights go out, you'll have one more day with the only thing in llife that matters. RE: Senate passes NDAA
There's no telling how the justices will rule on something like this, however, it seems more often than not, they serve the interests of the president who nominated them as opposed to what the law says. You can also bet there are a LOT of politicians who LOVE circumstances that create chaos and fear, which then opens the door to legislation like this, that would never pass under normal circumstances.

RE: Heads up elevator failure JetLegent Hawk
If you are worrying about critical structure failures, rather than photographing or x-raying an arf, why not just build it yourself? I have built all of my own planes, never had a problem. Not knocking arf's, just wondering.

RE: Black Friday Deals, just a heads up...
Neither the media nor the government will admit the truth as to how bad the economy really is. I'm afraid it will get MUCH worse before it gets any better. I don't know of anyone who can afford toys or hobbies right now.

RE: MonoKote will not shrink
I keep wondering how long it will be before TopFlite, Great Pains or whomever owns Monocote now, to see a big enough finaicial loss via lost sales to admit they have a problem. I also can't help but think companies like Hobbico monitor forums like this and RCU in general. I guess the silver lining to the monokote mess is I have learned to 'glass and paint my planes.

RE: if your glow engine was in your car
Glow engine in a car? It would work ok, however, you'd need a 500 gallon fuel tank filled with $24 dollar a gallon glow fuel in order to have a viable range. Almost anything is possible, the question here is practicality. The oil mess is another problem to work out.

RE: MonoKote will not shrink
The new Monokote is expensive junk. It will not shrink aat all. If you do put heat to it, it just wrinkles, and burns. The sad part is TopFlite won't acknoweledge they have a problem, but rather try to blame the end user for unsatisfactory results.
ORIGINAL: xzatx what do u fly? i fly really expensive planes, the cheapest i have is like $1400 .. so i really want a robust system cause there are no room for glitches or mistakes reason i switched from jr, cause i cant keep buying jr receivers they are $150 ... so futaba is $70 and hitec is around $50 60
If the cheapest plane you have is $14oo, what difference does $150 receivers make? Just wondering....

Thanks again Gene, please keep us posted about the weight gain if you can. I always thought fiberglass had to be used with polyester resin, or epoxy of some sort. LOVE the calender!

RE: Goldberg Sukhoi SU-26
Bigal126, how did you select an airfoil for the stabilizer, and did it do anything for the flight characteristics of the plane? I have often wondered about this, and almost all kits and plans call for a flat fin and stabilizer. It does look like a straightforward modifacation to do.

Edited to add... I agree with Testpilot, just gotta have burning fuel beating on a piston. Just me, but eletric power leaves me flat... sort of like an electric 'Smart car'.

RE: Airplanes, Airplanes, Airplanes!!!
Building larger r/c aircraft seems to do something for me that not much else will. I started out many years ago with 1/2A freeflight planes that I scratch built from plans. I have left the hobby from time to time because of the realities of family life, but always came back. Even if I couldn't fly anymore, I would continue to build, especially scratch build. (It is a sickness, you see...) There is something about it that stimulates the creative part of my mind. Just my .02 cents worth...

Looks real good, Gene! What did you modify, other than full sheeting, to accomodate such a large engine? I look forward to building mine, maybe this fall/winter.

RE: Are OS screws made of butter?
I had a 1981 1000 LTD Kawasaki way back when. You are right about it being an incredible machine. Still, it had soft hardware on the engine, which was a huge headache, even with the correct tools.

RE: Are OS screws made of butter?
Dave Wave, yes in answer to your question, what everyone has said about Japanese Industrial Standard screwslots is correct, and yes Japanese hardware is made of the softest material humanly possible. Imagine the frustration of this problem on a Japanese motorcycle, ask me how I know.

RE: My Old Stock Monokote vs New Monokote
Scigs30, I had always used monokote in years past, with great results. I got back into the hobby after some years off, and the new stuff was HORRIBLE. The backing just fell off of it, it would not stick, and it would not shrink, PERIOD. After spending over 100 dollars on this crap, I called Top Flite to see what had changed. They carefully explained that I was the problem, didn't know how to use it, ect. ect. This is not a good business model for any company. Had they just told me to send it back, or conceded they had a bad batch or something, then that would be different, but to be so arrogant as to basically call me stupid, I won't buy it again. I have since used Ultracote with good results. The tragic part is, Top Flite had the gold standard in monokote.

RE: Is Monokote Fixed yet?
Some one must be buying this junk monokote, or Top Flite would have to discontinue it. Some months ago, I spent almost 100.00 on monokote that wouldn't stick, wouldn't shrink, and would only burn huge holes when I tried to make it work. I also don't like to be lectured about how I don't know what I am doing when I called the manufacturer. Why Top Flite won't acknowledge they have a problem, much less fix it, is lost on me. Maybe Top Flite will get it together someday, but they have lost me as a customer. Which is tragic, as they had a superior product, once.

RE: Is Monokote Fixed yet?
I have used Monokote for many years, and there is a huge difference in the new stuff compared to the old. I no longer use it at all. I just keep wondering how long before Top Flite can't GIVE this junk away and they decide to FIX the problem.

Hi Mr. Gene, I did buy the plans. The reason I asked about a thread on this plane is because I was having trouble understanding how the round fuselage was built on a flat board. Thanks!

Hi Graybeard! Have you ever covered on of these planes with fabric and dope? I want to try something other than monokote, as it has become almost unuseable to me. Very poor quality product anymore. I worry about weight gain with fabric and paint
