RE: Seagull's
Just got my DA and am in the process of putting it together. I'm planning on putting a couple of Magnum .52 four strokes on it. Just curious if anyone else has done it and what they did on the throttle linkage. The throttle arm on the motor sticks abouve the engine box, if I could reverse the throttle arm on the engine I think it would work a lot better. I have read most of the thread and it sounds like all Seagull models have CG errors in the instructions, my Edge 540 had the wrong CG stated in the instructions also and if it hadn't been for the postings on this website it could have been fatal. 4-Stroke

Green Stuff
Hey Dave; I have some general interest questions: 1) On my 63S, the green coating on the disc valve is almost totally gone. How much does this affect engine performance ? Should it be replaced ? 2) The 63S beats the old 63 by about 1000 rpm on an 11x7 prop (my examples). How much of that is due to the green stuff ? Thanks;

RE: .63 problems..
I had a similar problem when breaking in a YS 63 with a test mount. If you eliminate the usual fuel line and tank problems, check the prop hub/washer/prop to see if it is slipping. If the prop slips, the engine will stop immediately at wide open throttle. It has been my experience that ABRUPT stopping is caused by the glow plug coil vanishing or the prop slipping on the hub (or running out of fuel).

Either the LS or the Pro Pattern is much better for the YS - leaves some oil on the valve train.

9V buddy box connector
Dear Bax; I have an old 9VHP transmitter that I thought would be ideal to use with my XTR simulator. I wired the DSC cable to the XTR cable and all is well. Unfortunately, the location of the DIN jack on the 9V is exactly where my hand wants to be. This must have enraged many people trying to use the buddy box with the 9V (hence the 9Z jack in the center of the back). Do you have a low profile right angle 7 (or 5) pin DIN connector to fix this problem ? Do you know where I can find one ? Buddy Box or DSC cable with a right angle connector on each end ? The usual internet search turned up one at DigiKey which still sticks out about 18mm.

Gas Porting Works
Hi Dave; I finally got around to finishing my gas porting experiments on the FZ63 (modified with the external 63S regulator) in a helicopter using heli fuel with low viscosity oil. It worked out really well. The engine runs very consistently on 30% LV heli fuel. There is none of the previous surging/leaning/bogging/rpm changing. The engine also idles beautifully. I used a 1/16" endmill and went in from the edge of the piston about 1/32" resulting in four half round notches. I suspect that what we are actually doing is helping the seal between the bottom of the ring and the piston by exposing more surface area of the ring to the combustion gases. The 63S is heli ready out of the box for anyone who is interested. Thanks Dave

Gas Porting Details
Dave; I did a search and read many years worth of posts on gas porting and the problems that it solves. Your continued enthusiasm has inspired me to gas port my three 53's and two 63's that predate this mod. I have some very specific questions about the four 0.040 (#60) holes through the top of the piston into the rear/inside edge of the ring groove. 1) Do you center the holes on the rear edge of the ring groove (as viewed from the top of the piston) ? 2) How far into the ring groove (vertically) do you go ? It intuitively seems that if you go to the bottom it creates a port all the way around the ring. I could also use a 1/16 end mill (which is close to the 1.5mm referenced in one post) and go in from the top or notch in from the side of the piston. Similar two questions. 1) How far past the inside edge of the ring groove do you go (notching sideways from the outside in) ? 2) How deep into the ring groove (vertically from the top) ? My original attempt was to mill four 1/16 holes into the top of the piston centered on the rear/inside edge of the ring groove and down into the groove 0.010". It ran fine but winter has limited my testing. That is, I don't know if it actually helped anything. I entirely missed this gas porting thing because I put modeling aside for the first three years that you did it. Thanks Dave; You are a very patient man and answer each question at least ten times.

RE: 91 ACH
Dave; The 53 snout fits a custom made flywheel/fan in an old XCell 46 graphite heli and works fine. There are still a few guys who want to revive old orphaned 4-stroke heli's from about 10 years ago. They generally come with a (busted) 91ACH. My point is that it is more cost effective to convert a new engine. The 110 should fit and give a slight boost. The external regulator is better than the old insulator plate on the 91ACH. The new 63S is heli ready and works very well if you can make it fit. Question: I notice that the elaborate multi-fuel ported 53 carb barrel has been replaced with a single tappered slot on the 63. It this a general trend in new YS four strokes ?

RE: 91 ACH
Dave; Could a 110 be further insulted by running it with the YS63S external regulator (assuming that you made a cover plate for the hole) ? I insulted a shinny new 63 today by installing an old 53 crankshaft in it.

Gas Porting and LV Oil Fuel
Hey Dave; I have a curious problem with an old 53. It runs fine on 30% fuel with 20% high viscosity oil ( Cool Power Pro Pattern and Red Max Performance). It won't run at all on Cool Power 30% Heli fuel (with 23% LV oil). Have you ever encountered this problem? This engine predates the piston gas porting. I only changed to the Heli fuel because the LHS could not get Pro Pattern.

RE: Mode 1 Flyers, UNITE!!
I have flown mode 1 since 1968 also. That includes Bonner, RS Systems, Kraft, ProLine, JR Century 7, ACE, and now Futaba 9VHP and 9ZHP. I have never, never, not once ever bought a mode 1 transmitter. Conversion used to be easy. With the 9V/Z you have to completely disassemble the transmitter. Tower now offers to sell the 14MZ on mode 1 for a mere $100 US extra. That's really nice of them. It's not like they sell mode 1 all over the world. They have to specially make these mode 1's for the USA!

RE: YS 4 Stroke HP Ratings
So in summary. The HP peak is beyond the usable rpm, where the valve train disintegrates. Run as fast as you dare with as much nitro as you want. I actually run the 53 at as much as 14,700 rpm and the 63 at about 13,200. Both on 30%. I have noted that Heli fuel with low viscosity oil does not lube the valve train very well. I have switched to pattern fuel. I remember a discussion about calibrated "load props" from about 30 years ago. They come with a HP vs. rpm chart. Does anyone currently sell these ?

YS 4 Stroke HP Ratings
Come on YS guys! If you post HP ratings, someone must have put these engines on a dynometer and plotted a HP curve. Why don't you post the RPM at which this HP was achieved in the above sticky post ? We understand that it won't be the prop RPM. For example, a typical 2 cycle engine produces max HP at 16,000 and runs the prop at 10,000. We understand also that HP ratings are done at favorable conditions and probably 30% fuel. Put the RPM in the above chart.

Dear Dave; I run YS 63S's in Helicopters. I would like to know the horsepower peak using 30% fuel so that I can gear it accordingly. I know that it is closer to 15000 than the recommended prop 11000. Also: I recently make a special tool to unscrew the external regulator and replace the silicone rubber diaphragm. I discovered that it is not threaded and does not unscrew ! What is the recommended way to replace the diaphragm ?
