RE: Whats up with kits?
ORIGINAL: Gray Bear I have however just gotten a set of plans from MAN that are perfect!! That is something new! So are the plans, the plane was designed by Dick Sarpolus and then Drawn on CAD by Bob Kruger and they are perfect from what I can find, they could be sent to a cutter! But the plane, The Prime Cut +20 has a very low parts count and a very low wood count. It's 90 inches wing span and has a length of 67 inches with 1450 sq.in. Calls for a 45cc engine but it should be light enough for smaller if your not into 3-D. It's a stand off Sukhoi. Take a look!
have you check your plans good?? the prime cut +20 plans I got Mid 2011 had 2 left wings on them. it took MAN almost a year to get the wings re-drawn. I just got a updated sheet with a left and right wing on it. other than that they are a GOOD set of plans.

use for SKOAL cans
if you dip or know someone that dose get their emply snuff cans. the plastic cans are great for mixing epoxy in. they will not melt when it starts curing, large mouth makes it easy to mix and get out with wide spreader tool. also it is good for putting small screws, parts, ect. in you just have to lable cans since you cann't see inside.

RE: beginner scratch builder. first plans a not for sale funfly. is that a good one to start on?
I've been out of the hobby for 25 yrs but always enjoy building kits or from plans. since getting back in, I have scratch built DAS UGLY STIK and starting on a MISS TEXAS. both plans are from RCM plans. as for as tools about all of my buillding is done with simple hand tools and good sanding blocks. I have a craftsman table top band saw that I use to cut plywood parts. with the help of on-line fourms(such as this one) BALSA USA, MATIONAL BALSA, LONESTAR BALSA all have good reviews as for as getting your wood. TOWER and SIG MFG also has balsa.I have never used building jigs, just a good flat level building table. since I just got back into RC I'm sure there are many better builders out there with better ideas and info. I just like to keep it simple when building.

mount wing or horizonal slab frist?
I have started building a MISS TEXAS from RCM plans (Chuck Cunningham). My ? is do you mount the wing 1st then line up the horizonal slab on final asimbely. the reason I ask is I built a UGLY STIK mounted the h/slab 1st had to sand and shim to get the wing to line up.

RE: douglas fir?

douglas fir?
with the shortage of spruce,( long star balsa stating no 48" wood till mar or apr). I am needing some 46" longeron for my MISS TEXAS build, I cut some 1/2" x 1/4" strips out of douglas fir. they bowed around 1/2" on a 48" strip. the fir wood had 20 grow rings per inch (good tight wood). No local hobby shop within 75 miles and all of them say NO SPRUCE. any help or suggestions. I would use bass wood but all I have found is only 24" long. the plans only call for spruce on the longeron and a short peace in tail section. the spars are 3/8 x 1/2 in balsa with 3/16 webbing.
