RE: Best 1/16th scale tank radio
Warhammer.....let me see what I can do. It still needs to be weathered but it's 90% there. I went with a non-typical paint job but it turned out good. I've got to get the radio back in it to get it put back together and I'll get some pics posted. My crap laptop nuked and all my pics were on that. So I'll have to get some new ones. Sucks to because a buddy and I spent a day over near Camp Pendleton getting pics on the sand doing some battle.....was cool! I'll get some on here though.

Hey guys, Haven't given up on the boat.....it's just been wicked busy lately with work and getting things going. Redid my whole shop to give me another 14' of counter space and it's taking forever to get organized again. Nothing new though. I'm still waiting for my parts to be machined. Had some of the gearbox mounts made out of delrin and they seemed to work just fine so I'm having them redone in aluminum. Working on getting a new radio as well. Been having serious glitching issues with my 3pk and don't need any issues with this missle boat. So a 4pk is on the way and servo's will be close to follow.....hang in there for updates! Mike

RE: Best 1/16th scale tank radio
Yeah pcomm I've had the same thing. I've experienced your interference also up in Huntington Beach......had a truck on a PCM Futaba go a little crazy! And I was here in the garage when the tank went crazy. I think after looking at that site you sent me that I will go with the Spektrum for the tank. All the interference also makes me nervous for my boat and other big scale stuff that could not only be expensive to fix but could do some damage also.....so I'm working on getting everything switched over to the spread spectrum radios. Haven't had any issues with those yet. It's weird. Guess I took lack of interference for granted up north!

RE: Best 1/16th scale tank radio
Thanks pcomm for the website info. I'm going to dive into that tonight to see what it has to offer. And I'm not sure what it is with the AM stuff where I'm at. In Oregon I never had any issues, but since I've been down here in So Cal it seems as though AM just wrecks havok on stuff. I had an external antenna on the tank as well as the radio antenna fully extended and the radio was only a few feet away from the tank and it jumped around. Up until that point I didn't have any issues with the radio.....and now that I look at it I think it's shorting out. The back circuit board is getting really really hot. I'd just like the piece of mind that my $1000++ tank is not going to have even a thought of issues concerning the radio. I want my biggest concern with the tank to be where I run it next, not where it's going to run to next. I haven't fully given up on the Futaba but we'll see. I'm going to order another radio this weekend and will have to have some pretty discouraging news not to go with FM or spread spectrum. Thank you guys for your input! Mike

Best 1/16th scale tank radio
Hi guys, Here's my issue. Got my sweet Tamiya Leopard A2 tank finally together and painted up. Fired up my Futaba 4 channel AM radio and less than 10 seconds later the tank nearly drove itself into destruction because AM sucks a$$. I want to switch at least to FM if not spread spectrum radios. But playing with my Futaba 7c trying to get things to work is proving to be just a little challenging. Can you guys recommend how to convert one of the air radios over to the tank? I understand that if it's FM I'll have to switch to the ground frequency......I'm just more worried about how to make it work. Playing around with the 7c I wasn't even able to get the tank to fire up let alone drive or shoot. Even if I have to rewire the tank and turn the lights and such on with a spare channel I would do that. I'm not opposed to ripping open the radio as well to wire in some aftermarket buttons for the machine gun and main gun I'll do that as well. Can anyone help out with this? Thanks guys, Mike

RE: Hunter Twin Build
I don't have a problem with either set up actually. I think they have their good and bads both. I like the small warning the dubro tanks give as you start to run low on fuel.....but like the ease of being able to put a bag anywhere really without restriction. The size of the plastic tanks pretty much limits your locations in the hull. My main goal is to make the tank location be as close to the cg as possible so the boat retains the most stability no matter what the fuel situation. Which for me will be almost directly under the engine. I think I have just enough room to have a custom setup made for under there. We'll see. Going to give my metals guy a call and see what he thinks. He is the sole fabricator for a guy running some trophy trucks.....before that he was Chrylsers main fab guy here in So Cal till Chrysler made the stupid decision to close their design studio on the West Coast. If I can think it, he can make it! :) Time of course is my only enemy in projects.....the busier he is the more the bill is! :)) Mike

Danny, Good call my friend. I sort of overlooked the fact that one would lean out over the other. Do you guys sell the 1200ml bags? Or know where I can get them? I'm actually on the fence now. I have access to a German buddy of mine with wicked welding skills and also has access to an x-ray machine.....he could weld me up a custom fit nice fuel tank and then x-ray it to make sure there aren't any holes..... My only concern would be not being able to gauge how much fuel is in the tank. I might have to hit him up with some ideas on this. Custom fatty polished aluminum fuel cell mounted directly under the engine to keep the CG balanced sure would look better than a pee bag looking thing! LOL! Sorry for the visual guys, that's just what it reminds me of! Hahahaa! I'm still not opposed to using one of the bags though.(For fuel of course) :)) Mike

Been wrapped up in family stuff and started a P-51 project.....ADD and r/c are a dangerous combo! :)) Matt, I talked to the guy that distributes Jerone pipes and he says they are out and has no idea when they will be back in stock. Still no luck on the Cooper pipes either. My buddy is still working on the mounts for my trim servos and gearbox mounts. Soon as he slows down at work enough he'll get those finished up. Think they are drawn up just need to be cut out. Might have to kick him another Mt. Dew to hurry that one up! :) I'll keep you guys posted......slowly but surely it's getting finished up! Mike

Yes another TF Giant P-51 thread
Hi guys, Ok, if I could settle on one thing it would make things easier but I'm all over the map in r/c.....boats, cars, planes......love it all! I'm pretty bummed and kind of pissed. I'm somewhat new to So Cal and know there's an "attitude" down here but I've got to vent. I'm a novice scale flyer at best. I fly foams all day but decided the other day to step up to the big guys and ordered the Top Flite Giant P-51. If it's anything like the 10th vs 5th scale cars and bikes they will fly better, easier and more realistic. So I'm at a local field trying to make some friends and check out which are the best fields for new guys learning to fly the big dogs. One of the old geezers who has more money than sense in his plane gave me the "Oh, you're building one of those" comments and brushed me off like I was some chump. What the hell. Is there something out there that I don't know about the Top Flite models? I mean I no skid when it comes to modelling.....that's why I'm in the hobby. For the details. My P-51 will be converted over the the B version, DLE-55 engine, Sierra retracts......and will just look sweet cause that's how I like it! So now I'm kind of bummed. I went out expecting to get my small town hey how ya doin welcome and left feeling like screw planes...... Anyway I've since gotten over that and have said to hell with the old guy, I'm going to be one of the cool guys that supports the hobby and new guys getting into it. Just had to throw my .02 in there. And since the thread is started anyone have any additional thoughts for me on the bird? I've read in here and learned the following: 1. The DLE-55 is a bigger cc than the DL-50 but for the most part the same size and with a modified exhuast seems to be the best fit for the 51 with the least amount of cowl hacking when used in combo with the fiberglass cowl from FiberglassSpecialties 2. The Robart retracts are less than reliable unless they are rebuilt.....so I'm sticking with Sierra 3. The landing gear struts and ribs are in need of major bulking and beefing up 4. As much as I want one for scale a 4 blade prop is kind of a poor use of power and isn't as efficient as the 2 blade by any means I've had the box about 2 weeks and have the tail section ready to go and both wings are ribbed up and I'm getting ready to connect them together. Still need servos and the retracts before I get much farther but that will have to wait a bit as my boat needs a set of pipes. :)) Thanks for any advice you guys can pass along. This forum rocks and I'd be another squid without all the info I've leached out of it! :) Mike

So I have two of the 500cc bags here. I was thinking, it might be a good idea to run to seperate bags just so there is some warning as to when the fuel is going to run out.....or maybe not with the twin. Maybe I'll just score a 1000cc bag and call it good. My gear box mounts should be done this week and I have a guy working on the exhuast ports for me.....he's anal though and it could take a bit on those. Still undecided on pipes. Matt you had given me the names of a couple other than WH and Bonzi but I wasn't able to turn anything up on them in my search. Do you have direct links for those pipes? Mike

RE: Hunter Twin Build
Sweet! Well I got the inlets flush with the bottom of the hull. Glad that step is almost done. Will glass them in tomorrow after work. Just ordered some Redline motors aluminum thru the hull linkage hole thingys. So I'll get the linkage for the steering set up this week also. Hey Matt I saw Phil snapped a steering linkage in one of your pics. What did he settle on that was strong enough? I'm going to be using Hitec digital 1/4 scale servos for steering. I have some Traxxas linkage rods that are pretty burley but thats only if it is straight on. And lateral pressure and they snap like a chicken bone! I'm also looking at the Eagle Tree real time telemetry system. Only because I can monitor 2 head temps, have an actual GPS registered speed and monitor rpms. I want to run this boat good and hard as I feel it will be strong but at the set time want to keep a really close eye on all the specs. This sysemt will allow me to do that and not have to drag it to shore every 5 minutes to check it out. Anyone have any experience with the Eagle tree stuff? Read quite a bit of good on here. I also currently have my machine shop buddy working on my gearbox mount, exhaust exit ports and some servo mounts for the trim servos. Pipes are soon.....soon as I figure out which I like best.....then the servos, new radio and get it painted and stickered.....but thats down the road! ;) Mike

Hey Matt, Yeah, they are recessed a bit. I didn't have a decent sander to thin down the inside of the hull. Just went and got one this afternoon so first thing tomorrow morning I'm going to thin the hull down and make them a little more flush with the bottom. :) I'm thinking that keeping them recessed would create an unwanted air pocket that would be bad. I'll flush them out and get more pics posted! :) Mike

RE: Hunter Twin Build
Hey buddy, Yes I do have some pics......now! :)) Here they are. Pretty decent set up. It comes with an attachment that you can see in the pics that actually locks down in the filler neck not unlike the ones for your car does. And it slides in pretty good. No danger of it falling out. I'm pretty happy with it. Looks pretty good as well. Took a chance when I ordered it but am happy with it. Also managed to get the holes for the water pick-ups drilled today before the fam got home. Gotta say that was the most stressed out thing I've done on the boat. Hard to just start hacking into the bottom of that gelcoat! But I did as you said and have learned from past mistakes......took it slow and dremeled it to start and filed it slow to the end. Nice tight fit now. I think I'll silicone them in and then glass over that. That should insure a nice watertight seal. I do have to say I'm not liking the drive adjustment. Check out the pics. You adjust the drive up or down. That part works flawlessly and has nice range. Plenty for what I will need I'm sure. The part I don't get? Once you adjust the drives to the angle you like. Say +3 degrees. You can then just take the drive and lift up the back with your hand.......nothing stops it from lifting up. So what that tells me is that when I'm romping on the throttle.....or worse, the drives are coming in and out of the water......they will slam up and then slam back down onto the adjustment screws. Nothing stops the drives from rocking up and down. I see this being a MAJOR flaw and causing stress to the drives that isn't needed. It was the same as if I didn't have the adjustable drives though. Just a screw and a stop on the drive. This keeps it from being pushed forward but not back. Not sure if you've dealt with this and I'm just missing something? I'm thinking at least of putting a spring on the top of the drive to keep the drive from crashing up into the top of the housing. The servos would have to work against the spring but since I'll be using 1/4 scale for those it shouldn't be to big of problem. What do you think? Mike

RE: Hunter Twin Build
Matt, Yeah, I'm going to see what I can make happen with the hinge option. Just seems like a better option. I guess I'm thinking in my head also.....if I yard sale the boat at high speed it's going to be ugly all the way around. Guess the friggin hatch is the least of my worries! :)) Engineer buddy of mine had a good idea. Instead of spring so it opens slow why not a servo actuated top? :)) He might be onto something here. Extra weight but that would be easier and more reliable than the shock option. Ok, I'm having another issue. I ordered a fuel filler cnc machined piece from MH$. I'm torn. I think it looks the best on the side of the hatch just behind the windshield but this creates all sorts of issues. So I'm leaning towards where Phil had his on the hull itself next to the hatch seam......that makes way more sense I guess but it just looks more race on the side of the hatch......... Also adding some pics. Ordered a intake for the roof. Just to make it look a little different and a little more aggressive. And to serve as that much more resistance when the water hits it when I flip it...... :) Think it looks pretty good. Liked it more on the back than I did towards the front. Again disregard the destroyed shop in the background...... Mike

RE: Hunter Twin Build
Well the boats coming along nicely. Next I need to order the exhaust and get that system all set up. Then a couple servos and it's pretty much there......for the most part. Looking at the hatch. Would like to figure out a way to make a trick hinge system that opens from the front, hinges at the rear and has some shocks for that nice slow motion open effect. That way my lids not getting kicked around or falling off the pier or anything. One less thing to worry about. Anybody have any experience with hinging a lid? I'm trying to get my brain around mounting up the hinges without being able to mount them with the lid closed. That could prove to be difficult and I want this thing perfect. Any suggestions? I've been looking at the Robart #350 bomb door or retract door type hinge. Think that would be the best bet. Then glass/carbon it in for strength. This seems like a good idea until I think about flipping the boat at full speed off a wave.....then I see piece and parts floating all around in my head and in San Diego bay! :(( Maybe I should stick with my rare earth magnet idea? Hey guys, Here's some questions that I'd be up for some input on. Collets. They have the kind that clamp down on the flex shaft or the kind that you have to solder the flex shaft in. Which does everyone prefer? Also, anyone know where I can get a good radio box with a fully sealable screw on lid? I don't want to use hatch tape. I want something that has some thumb screws or something. MH$ has one but I'll be damned if I'm paying $90 for one. Rather try to make one. I'm going to run a full 7.4v stick battery also so it has to be long enough to fit that in as well. Mike

Currently I have the boat on end with 14 cans of soup weighing down my transom ply while the epoxy dries. I also have just fabbed up the engine rails and temporarily hot glued them together to I can get all the heights right for the gear box and engine. Just ordered the glass so that should be here this week so hopefully by next weekend I'll be adding in the rails, engine and gear box. All of these pics are just initial and nothing is permanent yet as the plywood on the bulkhead isn't in yet. But it will give you guys an idea. Mike

RE: mhz s6 speedmaster drives ?
Hey rcguy, Just picked up a couple of these drives. I'm building an MHZ 69" Hunter hull and have done a crapload of research on the drives. From everyone I've talked to on the strength of the drives you should be able to get 50mph. I guess it's the torque the drives don't like but as long as you stay stock or mild modded you should be fine. But they are still scale drives so you have to run them like they are scale. As for rebuilding you don't have an option for that. Right now MHZ claims they are retooling the die's and the drives have been backordered fir like 9 months or something stupid. To rebuild them you have to send them back due to the gear lash and other stuff. I wouldn't hold my breath to get them rebuilt by any means. I've had my hull ordered for a while and still haven't heard anything. And there are all sorts of rumors flying about the poor MHZ service. Check out my Hunter thread for more info though. Hope that helps some. Mike

RE: Hunter Twin Build
Ok guys here are the latest pics. This week I cut out all the vents and the window area and finally figured out what the issues with the hatch were. The attached pics will explain better. I also wish I would have cut the windows out first as it really let me see what was going on. The hatch is completely flat. The hull is rounded and curved on two planes. It curves from the sides and f/r. After some grinding of the center section I was able to get the front and rear of the hatch completely flush with the hull. The center now sits about 4mm's lower in the center. Looks like complete ass to me but maybe it won't be as noticable once I get some paint on it. I actually tried sanding some of the sides down as you can see in the pics but if have since stopped because it's never going to be close. So there's no sense in weakening that one point. I either had to pick of having the center/sides flush or the front and rear. I went for the aerodynamics of f/r vs the sides. Anyway, next I'll be working on getting some lexan or PPG molded a bit and mounted up. Then it will be the engine rails. My engine assembly will probably get ordered in the next few weeks I think. Has anyone used carbon fiber sheets for engine frame rails? It does flex a bit but I can't see tht being a bad thing neccessarily.....even if I was to brace the cf it would still be lighter and stronger than just regular wood stringers. How about placement of the trim tabs. Anyone have any pointers on where to place these? Mike

RE: Hunter Twin Build
You know.......some more thoughts on rare earth magnet setups. I see there being a couple of issues. First is mounting. But glassing them in or making some sort of bracket mounting system would be terribly difficult. My main concern is the number, strength and size. Not enough pull and you risk losing your top on a windy day at 50mph. To many any you risk a high speed flip andripping out any attachment type method previously mentioned. Either way the wrong calculation and your screwed in both situations. I'm thinking of this. Make a mount system that would break away. Something that won't move in any wind but if you crash and end upside down it would either pop off the hatch or break the mounting system leaving the majority if not all of your hatch in one piece allowing a reglue of the mount and running the next day. Vs having to order a whole new hatch cover. Mike

RE: Hunter Twin Build
Neito, I had posted some pics earlier of the defects on the hull. Nothing major but like you said I expected a bit more from a $1k boat. I know I'm pretty anal as well but I'm good with that. Right now my biggest issue is the hatch and hull weren't done as one. So the hull curves a bit and thatch doesn't. This means when the nose and tail of the hatch are smooth and flush with the f/r of the hull the center of the hatch sits below making a big efffffing drop. That to me looks like a$$! So thats where I'm at currently. Nightly going out to sand and get fiberglass all over my shop when this all should have been designed correctly. Still happy with my purchase but Hans Peter is a fiberglass boat building God in my book! :)) I'll get updated pics of my work uploaded for you guys this weekend. Mike
