RE: Performance Aircraft Unlimited - Are you kidding me...you can't be seriuos
Herve is a good guy and has fine customer service. Google it and you will find plenty of pleased PAU customers. Its his business, let him run it his way. Heck, I might just buy one of his new 30% Edges after reading some of this this nutty thread.

RE: AW edge 540 50cc or AW extra 260 50cc
I love my AW Extra 260 with a DA50 and canister. It is by far my best IMAC flying plane and it will go fast if that is what you want[;)] My 260 will also do basic 3D stuff well and it can really tumble if you know what you are doing. The Edge is a big plane and I wouldn't be happy with it on a DA50. My experience with AW quality has always been great. And the AW instructions are truly second to none, follow the step by step directions and you will have a great flying plane. Also the AW 50cc planes are built tough. I hit a mole right after landing my AW 50cc Yak54 which nosed the plane over. One night of repairs and it is as good as new - no big deal.

RE: gas engines
DLE30 is a nice running engine, but the muffler that comes with it is a POS. Get a good pitts muffler from JTEC.

Great move AW, you need to go back to many of your older designs and apply this QB-L concept.

RE: OMG…just weighed my AW planes
The GraphTech landing gear for the AW 50cc Yak54 saves 5 oz. I just installed it this weekend. My 50cc Extra 260 ia now under 17 lbs. and the Yak54 is under 19 lbs. I will post final figures when I am done. I will say that I have spent some serious money on CF to get the lower numbers, but have also done some less expensive modifications like removing unneeded tuned pipe tunnels.

RE: OMG…just weighed my AW planes
I like my AW planes so I have been working to get the weight down. I should be able to get 1/2 lbs. out of each. Once I am done, I will post my results. I have noticed that my 3DHS plane and my friend's EF are starting to show their age after one season of flying. The AW planes look and work as well as they did last spring.

RE: Best 50cc plane for 3D?
My only comment on the 3DHS Slick is that by the time you buy it and a DA60, you could have bought a 100cc plane. And the size is so big that transportation becomes an issue, just like a 100cc plane.

RE: OMG…just weighed my AW planes
I had the same experience with an AW 50cc Yak. My first one was a V2 and when it took a dirt nap a few years later I replaced it. Same setup and I gained 1.5 lbs and that is AFTER buying CF wing/stab tubes. AW did redesign the landing gear mounts which IMO was a waste of effort. The old design worked just fine with the included re-enforcement kit. And the V2 plane flew better on my DA50, I wish I still had it. Suggestion for AW.... Buy an EF or 3DHS plane and study how they make their planes light. Then go back and re-engineer your old 50cc Extra 260 and YAK. Those two planes are my all time favorites, but today they are built with old technology and heavy wood. I still think AW makes a great product, but I would trade both my AW planes in on an older/lighter model.
ORIGINAL: Jezmo I just bought a brand new Extra 260 50cc in original red to replace my 5 year old Extra that was a V1 but otherwise identical. I took the DA50 and all radio gear from the old and put it into the new one. Same with the gas tank etc. My old plane, after lord knows how many repairs and such, weighed in at 17lbs 3ozs. The new one weighed in at 18lbs 3ozs dry. That's a bunch of difference and prompted me to look for the increase. Well the wings weigh 5ozs each more than the old ones, for a total of 10ozs, leaving the rest for the fuse. I can see where the landing gear mount mods made some difference but not that much. Not sure where the rest of it is to be found but a pound makes a huge difference in the way the plane flies especially 3D. Again, as I mentioned, this is with the EXACT same hardware (engine, radio gear, etc) from the old V1 bird. WOW is my input to go with the OMG. These things need a diet, bad!
I already invested in CF wing and stab tubes and you can see my planes are not exactly light weight. Now I am wondering about CF landing gear.

OMG…just weighed my AW planes
I have flown and enjoyed AW planes for years. Never thought they were great for 3D, but sure enjoy them for IMAC and how well they are built. The weather this spring has been bad; so I thought I might weigh my planes. I used a digital scale by Taylor (TE22), sells for about $80. I weighed the fuse, canopy and wings separately. Years ago, I owned a second generation AW 50cc Yak which had NiCAD batteries and stock everything else – it was a good 1.5 lbs lighter. I know some may say: "this guy just builds heavy". Well I must have canisters to meet noise numbers at one of my clubs. Other than that this is a basic/light setup and I invested in CF upgrades. AW 50cc Yak 19 ¼ lbs (AW website: Weight 16.5 to 17.5 lbs) DA50 w/ canister 1 x A123 for RX w/ dual switches 1 x 2300 NiMH for ignition CF wing tube CF stab tubes Stock landing gear no wheel pants 42% ignition kill AW 50cc Extra 260 17 1/8 lbs (AW website: Weight 16 to 17 lbs) DA50 w/ canister 1 x A123 for RX w/ dual switches Syssa IBEC for ignition CF wing tube CF stab tubes Stock landing gear with wheel pants I sure would be interested in your comments and suggestions!!! Ignorance was bliss...

RE: Best IMAC CG for 50cc Extra 260
Jezmo, What helpful input - THANKS! I once maidened a WH Edge that was tail heavy and I got it down just fine, but why have all the stress;) With a DA50 and a canister the 260 built tail heavy. I have already installed CF in the horizontal stab and installed the RX battery next to the wing tube to get 3.25". I have 125 flights on on my AW 50cc Yak54 and have always enjoyed it. I am sure this plane will fly nice too. I especially like smaller size of this plane. So many 50cc planes now are huge. And thanks for the landing advice. Now if winter would just end I might be able to fly it.

Best IMAC CG for 50cc Extra 260
I am currently 1/4" behind the recommended 3". From reading various websites I have seen recommendations ranging from 1/2" behind the recommended CG to 1" in front. I have also read that the plane is more pitch sensitive than most designs to CG placement. Thanks for your input!

50cc Extra 260 vs. Yak 54
I am getting ready to maiden my AW 50cc Extra 260 and wanted to get some feedback on what to expect. I have flown the Yak 54 for close to 200 flights. Are there any comparisons on flight characteristics or landing? Thx

RE: Hitec 5485 servos
The Karbonite gears when new are not the primary concern. I would worry about the lack of servo torque leading to flutter and then the plane taking a dirt nap. Spend more on servos.

RE: Hitec 5485 servos
90 oz. at 6 volt is not enough for a 30 cc acro plane. Sure it will work, but sooner or later you will get flutter or blow back and you will lose the plane.

RE: Syssa Gas Engines
Syssa Aircarft has grown and is in the process of moving to a larger building. During this process the phone doesn't always get answered, but e-mails always do. Todd can be slow to respond, but when he does it is at 100% and that includes warranty work. I recommend the Syssa, because it comes with an effective muffler, the build quality is so nice and and they do run nice.

I am waiting for a reasonably quiet muffler to hang on a DLE20. The stock setup is just too loud for my ears and my field.

RE: DLE30 experiences please
DLE30 is a fine engine, just don't use the stock "muffler". It tests out over 100 db per AMA testing standards and well into the pain range at full power and 10'. I don't know about you, but I kind of like my hearing to work. A friend has a DLE30 with the 3DHS canister and that is a very nice setup. Take a look at the Syssa 30, nice engine and it comes with an effective muffler.

RE: 30cc Edge 540 build
FYI...for you guys using a DLE30 with the stock "muffler". It isn't a muffler and you will be at about 103 db (pain range) at 10' using the AMA test standards with a Xoar 19x8. I would find a good pitts muffler before you cut the cowl. It will save your ears, your field and look a lot better.
