RE: Winter greeting
Great to see you guys alive, doing some serious flying :). Been flying smaller e-pattern, kept it down to -7 ,-8 celsius or so ... too cold on the fingers :) Plan to use a 2m later, still too much snow... Batteries!? no problem, they work just fine, just a little down on power/duration, but plenty for FAI without restriction if use of "normal-sized" batteries. My suit is filled with batteries, before and after flight`s, perfect for heating in our cold climate:). Kjell Olav

Thanks Chaps! Just what i was looking for! Now it`s time to find out the Rasa numbers ( dimension/load ). If i understand this correctly, i need to look at the combination : number and size to get the flying caracteristic and load for my C50 14XL... I saw some numbers in an previous post somewhere here,i better do some study ... :) Thanks again, Kjell Olav

RE: Two new F3A outrunners from Hacker
... Looking at the Q80 picture in the Hacker catalogue; should be possible to make an rear support... EG: carbonplate2-3mm thick ( approx 3cm dia ), drill 5 holes in, put carbon rods in the holes, isolated by fuelhoses, fit everything in the center of the "spoke-space" ... rest of support to the fuse-frame could be the same as the C50... Hmm... Just some thoughts, hard to say without the motor close-up... Anyway, would be interesting to try this motor, if i did not have two of the C50 already :) Kjell Olav

Paul, Here you can see the exit holes ; the two forward for regulator outlet, and the four aft for motor/battery outlet. ...added one more picture of the stator section how it looks from inside when cowling mounted... I did several prototypes with different shape and size, and ended up with this one. What ever you choose to get the motor cooled, i would recommend to build some kind of a closed duct; from air-intake to partly surrounding the motor. ... Hi, My two El powered Integrals had the same behaviour + some other i wanted to change ..., i choosed following setup to correct this : Stab at 0 deg : * Up / down thrust close to 0 deg ( from original about -2 ) * side thrust from 2 to 4 deg ,depend on the propeller size/type and with/without canalizer. ( from original 2deg right thrust). * wing at approw +0.5 deg * CG at approx 170mm from L.E Nice charateristic behaviour, just my liking for FAI prog. Hope this help Kjell Olav

RE: Updated Weight Requirements?
Agree with brenner... My personal thoughts: I think most pattern pilot`s would do what they can to stay below limit, even they know they won`t be controlled... It`s a part of the game to achive this so to speak... ... "to speed at 35mph in a 25mph speed zone doesn`t mean it is still allowed because probably no-one would control this" ... This increased "unlegal" weight has probably no benefit, but we feel more comfortable to stay within the rules... Personally i hope we will see both fuel and el-power in our sport. El-power has brought a new option to our sport; let us give it space. Increased weight limit (or no limit) for all powersystems. Fair or not; very difficult to separate glow / electric... besides, what we use to compare those two today would change tomorrow... The el.-technoligy will just be better and better, and it happens fast... What really matters is that we all have a choice, use what you want, whitout the rules controlling the cost... Kjell Olav

RE: Updated Weight Requirements?
Hi Chaps, Great discussion, Personally, i think an weight-increasement would do just fine to the sport. As long the size limit (2+2) is kept as it is, i think it would reduce some of the cost needed to stay below todays weight-limit. There could be a possebility that the airframe would grow bigger ( fuse-size )and thereby take advantage of new rules, but i am not sure it will happen, i think it has stabilized more or less. With todays limit; even an light airframe will need expensive items (motor, reg, bat , u/c, spinner etc ) to keep limit. Those el-pilot`s who can not still keep the limit will need to reduce the battery capasity with following consequenses, or buy expensive batteries. I think that the high-end pilots would still keep weight as low as possible (below todays limit) ,even with new rules, ... The different with new rules ,as i see it ; would open up for heavier plane`s and a possible lower cost. Just my thoughts Kjell Olav

RE: Flying with different batteries
Great inputs guy`s ! ... so far i had my favourite packs for competition , other for practice , stronger / lighter conditions etc , but it don`t seems right to me this way ... Personally, i prefer a constant powermanagement regardless of the flying conditions ... Better to deal with the flying condition`s as it is. Schultze is defenetly into something here as Chad mentioned. Lets hope we can get an ESC that fit our higly needed constant powermanagement for F3A, regardless of the batteries.. It would not only make things a lot easier performing our schedule`s, but allowing us to both do some experimental and keep our old- but still going batteries ... lets convince schultze about this, and get things started :) Kjell Olav

Flying with different batteries
Hi , Would like to hear your experiences about this topic. Actually, i am flying P-programs with typhical 2+2 ship`s ( currently, integral`s). My battery arsenal has become widely ranged by different brands, in different conditions. They all work fine, at least good enough to perform the P-schedules in normal conditions. Personally i feel it challenging to keep a constant flying style using the different batteries, caused by the differences between them. E.G : I can set up my throttle curve / power-management for one battery, and it will be wrong for the next one ... ... equal packs in same condition all the way would be fine, but ... How do you guy`s deal with this? Thanks in advance, Kjell Olav

Velco, Interesting fixture, and highly relevant info that will contribute to understand the individual cell condition. This Cell-logger is only connected to the balanceport , right ? Hi, I have been used 2-sets of G3 cx 5000 packs on my Integral this season, and they are the best i have tried so far compared to my Zippy-R and polyquest PQ-25C / 5000. In fact, they could not even compare.. Run`s cool, keep power at high loads ,even near discharged level, seems to withstand though usage; both discharge / charge. State of the art batteries to an reasonable price. ... yes, i would say that this time; the advertising is correct :) Kjell Olav

RE: Canalisers, fins and things, and whirlygigs..
H Hans,
ORIGINAL: Hans Meij Hi Kjell, Good idea to try. Googled a bit and found this article from Martin Hepperle. http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/turbulat.htm Have you experimented on position and height? The graphs do give some extra insight. I see that you have a large Canalizer mounted. Lately I changed the canalizer on my Synergy from the standard 20cm of CPLR to about 30cm. The effect of a responsive rudder and easier control of rolls increase even further. Regards, Hans
Hi Hans, Thanks for the article, good detaljed reading about the subject. The turbulator has been used in many applications, well documented. I have tried the turbulator in other positions on other planes in the past, but only this forward position on my Integral. But i did try differents height`s. ( not velcro though ).Seems that about 1mm is enough ( relatively thin bondary layer in this area ). I tried a " friction type of tape", like the one used for step`s etc, 0.8 mm high, works good. The present velcro has a base at 1mm, and total height of 2.5mm. The cann is 31cm wide, 9cm at root. I guess the size is ok, at least it works good. positioned -0.5` to -1.0` ( relative to datum-line). Besides of better knife-edge control, stall-turns are more predictable to perform. Kjell Olav

Hi, .. :-) ... translating words to Norwegian. Whirly - gig :-). ... yes, the statement " you still gotta fly it" is still valid, but we are all open for improvements to make it easier :-). No effort or time spend on this one, easy to try, no cost. Some detaljs and pictures : The strip is 4.5mm wide to be excact. Start from root, all the way to the tip ( where the tip-radius start ). Distance from LE : Root: 37mm , Tip: 18mm ( both measurement in middle of tape widt ). If any interest of type Type : Tesa velcro p/n 55225-00000. www.tesa-velcro.com PS. The owner in the picture is really convinced! :-)

RE: Canalisers, fins and things, and whirlygigs..
Hi, I am not sure if this is what you was thinking of, but it is for sure a whirlygig.. In the picture you can see my Bondary-layer-turbulator, inspired by a German WC F3A pilot ; G-Ulsamer. (present on his model at 2009 WC ). I guess many of us have tried a turbulator in different applications , but for me, this position ( near the LE ) was new for me. Time to test this one. In tried different type of turbulators in slightly different positions, and i finally came up with this one ( ref pictures). It is installed on my Integral; my 1-choice comp bird for the next years P-11. It is a self adessive velcro ( hard side of it ). I found the velcro interesting by it`s construction, since it is high, but not completely sealed; letting the air pass throuh it and not in a semi-paralell direction acroos it. At the same time make a better whirly-effect to the bondary layer. That was at least the thought behind it.. Theory and real life can be different, so only one way to find out, besides; no effort or time spend if no result, easy to install / remove Testing was done in calm / little wind performing P-09 + some P-11 manouvers, since i knew how the bird react in differents situations, thereby easier to compare the effects. Hmm, i must admit i was suprised in a positive matter.. The bird started to change behaviour early in the test`s using different types of tapes, but the velcro was defenetly the best. It got a nice "lock-on" feeling, like it was "gyro stabilized" so to speak.. In other words ; Stays in position, not so nervous and sensitive, soft, but still crisp at higher inputs.. More predictable stall with no noticed increased speed.. At the same time, no side-effect`s, as far i am able to see.. The effect is different than the thick TE, which to me feels more like an expo, but not the same stabilized "lock-on" feeling as the velcro. What can i say; the German guy is defenetly into something here. So far, i will keep this one for sure, suits me and my liking, Just my personal experience and taste. Kjell Olav

RE: Hacker XL Maintenance
Earl, Thanks for chime in. Yes, i agree, seems that the motor bearings fail first ... In the beginning, i thought the planetary gear-bearings (3) was the "weak" point, but it seems that these bearings hold up just fine ,even at extended lube interval using a high quality grease. For this reason i will continue extending the lube interval on the planetary gears to meet the total bearing replacement for the rest of the motor, due to the motor bearing limit. My goal : lube every 150 - change all bearings (total 7) at 300. The total effort is lower, and the total cost is reasonable. The cost is relatively low to change bearings, even at Hacker germany, and the extra cost to change all the bearings, included the fan is low .. As mentioned above; the motor-bearing is the limit, and the job has to be done anyway.. Well, just my personal maintenance program. Kjell Olav

RE: Hacker XL Maintenance
Hi, I have two 14XL, the oldest one have 300+ flights. This one needed bearing replacement ( motor -and gearbox shaft, totally 4 ) at 290 flights. Reason for this was the cooling fan started to loose pieces, probably caused by bearing wear. A fellow of mine had a total bearing failure between 300-400 flights. This is too short time / too few motors to make an realible logistic, but personally i will change those 4 bearings at every 300 flights based on running time / rpm / lubricating type these bearing are exposed to. Hacker germany do this , excellent service, and nice prices. I lubricate the planetary gears every 100 flights using mobil 28. So far there are no signs of wear of these (3) bearings. just my experience so far .. Kjell Olav

... I thought my woman looked better than me, that`s why she`s on the picture ! :-). Seems that`s many of the Norwegian pattern-flyers will go for el-power next year. Working great, easy, realible, solid ... Xigris look great, and has already got a nice reputation. My top-wing is 31X9cm, build up -all sheeted structure. weight 30 grams. ( including mounting screws, reinforcement brackets in fuse etc). The center-hinged modification is straight forward, but requires some work to get it light and right ... In the picture you can see how it is done. Finally primed/painted/sealed.
