Monocote covering help?
How does ironing the monocote covering help? How does it work...does it shrink the covering to adhere to plane? What IF I dont iron at all over time and the monocote gets wrinkles and gets worse...will it cut itself? Is the heat iron , very important? Can I use the heat gun too? Pls advice...:)

RE: Wing damage on Rascal40 - how to fix it-help!
The repair is done, all I need to do is remove the covering folds that are all over the plane. I have never done this! I have hobbico heat gun and small hobbico sealing iron too(but no sock or anything over the iron). Please advise can I use a piece of cloth (cotton) for the missing sock? In what setting should the knob be set (min, middle or max heat?) There is flat nozzle like metal adapter for the gun - what is it for? Is there a website that tells how to use sealing iron and heat gun ? When to use where? etc Thanks !!![:D]

RE: Wing damage on Rascal40 - how to fix it-help!
ORIGINAL: Dsegal First, you have to do what the doctors do in the ER: cut away the clothes to see what is going on- you are blind now. Trim the covering back to the nearest sound ribs and spar, leave an edge to fold down onto the ribs and iron it down. Now take a good look to find what is damaged. See if the cracked LE can be pulled back into correct position. If you can, hold it there and hit it with some thin CA to lock it in place. Then put a sheet balsa doubler over the crack area. Spackle won't do this job. Recovering with a patch will not be nice. You could use a trim iron to attach the edges of the patch. Then use your regular iron to gently shrink the patch. Do not allow heat to go over the borders of the patch or they will loosen- a thin piece of cardboard can be used to shield the edges from the heat. If the damaged LE can't be put back into place you must cut out the bad piece and splice in a new one.
Thanks...a few questions though: Trim iron to attach the edges? - Are you taking about the monocote? If so , do people use any sort of glue for monocote? sheet balsa doubler - Is this flexible ..like a thin sheet , do I use CA here too ? Do I sand the final repaired area to make it smooth or in line with the other area in the LE? Also, my CA is 2 yr old, stored in a cool basement , will it still be effective?

Wing damage on Rascal40 - how to fix it-help!
Hi I fly a Rascal 40 EP . Recently it hit a small tree 's branch which was like a "Y" shape, thus damaging both wings. The Right wing has more damage, for 4 inches I can feel the loose balsa. The Left wing only has a small dent, no broken balsa. Other than that the plane is ok. The leading edges took the hit at very slow speed while landing. My friend at the field said" Cut the monocote in that area , fill up the cracked areas with something like a light weight spackle(can get from HD/LW). Dry it and re seal with monocote." Is that good enough? The R.wing is sturdy but only 4 " are a bit broken to "feel" over the monocote. I have pics attached(Right wing first, left wing next). Pls advice, the easiest , less complex way to fix the Right one first and then the left one. Thanks :) Kris[:D]
