RE: KingTech K-80
Sorry to hear of your reversed connections. I like to see three good starts on a test stand before trying it in the airplane. I too learned the hard way. Glad she wasn't hurt too badly. Congrats on maiden! Diesel, I filter through an auto parts store funnel that has a water trap and find filter. Then filter from my fuel jug to the jet then the standard filter just before the engine.

RE: National 747 crash
The MadDog and Diesel 9 are born of Douglas so they don't truly follow Boeing design lineage. More to the point, rumor has it that the CVR and FDR lost signal input during takeoff. Unfortunately it's likely that one of the 40,000 to 70,000 pound vehicles they were taking to DXB broke through the aft pressure bulkhead and took out all kinds of stuff. Unfortunately we may never know what really happened. A high price for a lesson not learned. BTW, Boeing's recovery from nose high unusual attitude is a roll toward knife edge, letting the nose fall to the horizon then to pull out from the slight dive with wings level. The Vapor I suspect was fuel dump. The gear being extended in their last moments was a last ditch effort to try and absorb some energy from the impact. And for the record, none of the four Swept wing Boeing types I've flown ever pitched up on the way to a full stall as was mentioned earlier. Some airplanes do have that issue but not Boeing. They simply wouldn't pass part 25 certification for transport category aircraft.

Thanks guys! CB, I ease the stick back to half just after brake release and leave it there. I'm gonna go for it and just creep up on it gradually. I'll start by moving the turbine battery from the nose back to the engine bay bulkhead just beside the intake.

RE: Jet legend F-4
Hello guys, I have 12 flights on my airplane now, http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10846646/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm and am left thinking the CG needs to be moved aft...probably an inch. This is based upon the flight testing of CG. Basically something I learned flying IMAC. Starting from cruise flight, pull to 45 up, full power, half roll and then watch the airplane. If it keeps going streight up= CG neutral, pushes to an inverted climb= CG is aft, pulls over back towards level flight= Forward CG. Aft is benificial for 3D and neutral will clean up rolls but comes at the loss of pitch stability. Slightly forward CG is the best. When its right, the airplane will gently arc back to level in about 3 seconds. My Phantom arcs quite hard back to level, about 2 seconds or less. It also takes lots of up stick to rotate during takeoff and subsequently the airplane "jumps" off the ground once the balance point moves from the MLG to the center of lift on the wings (fwd of the MLG). In addition, the airplane requires alot of up stick when slowing from cruise speed to near flap speed (flaps up). I reciently had an issue with my smoke system and removed it until I can buy a replacement. Doing so moved the CG aft just a small amount and resulted in a better flying airplane. It helped some of the issues mentioned above and seemed faster for the same power setting. I think this is due to the stabilator not being deflected as much to hold the nose up, overcomming the fwd CG, in cruise. Has anyone else moved their CG further aft? I detailed my CG position on my thread and is similar to CB's at takeoff.

Glad no one got hurt. I don't even sit next to the engines on full size birds and they have a one in 100,000 hour failure rate or better. The failure rates really don't matter as it only takes one time to kill you.

Rafael Crash >>> FLUTTER
Great flight with Skymaster (X-tream Jets) Rafael yesterday. The airplane was in level flight and was at half throttle (40% thrust approx) and stabilized. As power was increased on KT-140 to full power the jet began to flutter after only two seconds. As soon as I saw the flutter I cut the power to idle and gently raised the nose to try and reduce airspeed. Two seconds after that the jet was starting to climb (20 Degrees up), continuing to flutter when the left wing broke off. I managed to shut down the turbine as the rest of the spinning airframe fell to the ground. I can't imagine this is the first case.

I think the black is more accurate. Someone scrubbed that one clean and the flash tends to brighten and wash out colors.

RE: JL F-4 Assembly, Winter 2011
Amazing what a month will do. We had a leaky sprinkler system that kept our grass areas of our flying site flooded. That got discovered and shut off. Ground dried out. Today was the perfect day. South wind (right down the 400' asphalt runway) at about 10 mph. Clear blue sky and several friends for support. She flew today for the first time. The CG was so good it didn't even need any elevator trim! Many thanks to Countryboy. The only trim required was a bit of left to cure a slow right roll. Takeoff and climb out were uneventful. I can tell you I love my fuel system. No fuss, no messy taxi tank and a solid 13 minutes at 75% power. We started up and the engine, let temps stabilize, performed a runup, taxi out, 8 full minutes of flying and then taxi to parking. I had 60oz of fuel remaining at the end of my flight so I guess I'll just push the left stick up a little further to fix that. [:D] The airplane is very stable and feels great. We noticed increased pitch sensitivity with gear and flaps down but was still comfortable. At no time did the jet feel like it would get out of shape if you weren't there to keep it on track. It settles nicely into the approach path and is very easy to fly in the roundout and flare. Lots to work with and once the mains touch the nose lowers nicely to the runway. I must note that in crosswinds, during taxi testing we noticed the airplane does like to weathervane (turn into the wind) during the takeoff run. I didn't expect this tendancy to be as sensitive with dual nose gear tires but it is and is easily controllable with the NWS and rudder. No gyro, No BS....I cant wait to go fly it again tomorrow. Only one post flight issue: The right nose tire left the rim at touchdown. The left one stayed on but was about 25% off the rim. My landing speed was as slow as possible as we have a short strip. My friend and I went to the hobby store and got some tire glue specifically for rubber tires. I plan on gluing all tires, even the mains. However no issues were noted with the main gear tires.

RE: JL F-22 Assembly, Winter 2011
Added the servos above the fuel tanks to drive the upper MLG doors. Been away working so I've not much to report. Sorry but duty called. I'm going to be using six gear door servos on this install. Two for the nose and two at each main. The two nose gear doors are both analog servos so I'm going to use an old Smartfly EQII that I had laying about. This will let me reverse one of them and adjust the throws of each servo if needed after getting them close with the Down and Locked Programer. I love that thing! Super easy to use. The mains will use one analog and one digital on each. The upper doors will have more load on them and will get the digitals. The lower doors will be analog. I'll use a Y-harness on each L and R main gear door circuit. Then use the Down and Locked programer to set the travels on the analog servos then I'll simply program each digital to the proper travel with my Hitec programer. Should be fairly simple and very reliable setup. Hope to be back in the shop around the middle of April. The weather is nice and I'm looking forward to getting her airworthy soon.

Thanks CB. I saw a service bulitin on GJC's site RE: the spars. It was suggested to plug them as they could chip or something like that. Wish they would have done it at the factory. Painted the leading edges and pitot tube that they forgot. Ofcourse some of the red peeled off the pitot! Now I get to repair. Some cheap ass paint for sure. My next will be a GJC externally painted.

RE: JL F-22 Assembly, Winter 2011
Last for the night. The main gear doors work very well and the upper door at the wing root has tons of travel. The big doors are a little warped and I'm going to try and correct that with some heat. I also created some work when the cuttoff wheel penetrated the outer skin. It will repair easily but will take some time. I hate rework.
