RE: Servos jumping on startup
ORIGINAL: BarracudaHockey What firmware do you have in your RX? I posted earlier how to determine.
If you're saying that the blinking brownout detection means I have the latest firmware - that's what I've got. Turning the Rx off and back on without cycling the Tx as well causes the blinking signal-loss lights.

RE: Servos jumping on startup
ORIGINAL: BarracudaHockey Its not the voltage, and the pippers won't jump on the radio. It's the servo interaction with the reciever, specifically how the servo reacts to having power on the power bus but no signal telling it what to do until the radio initializes.
I'm sure you're right, but I'm just grasping at straws here. It's really hammering my rudder every time it powers up and I'm afraid it's going to damage the cables, hinges, fuselage, etc.. My thought on the voltage regulator was to lessen the sweep speed of the servo arm enough that it wouldn't have the chance to bind the control surface before the Rx came to its senses, not that the voltage level was actually causing it. I'm open to any suggestions that might relieve the issue.

RE: Servos jumping on startup
ORIGINAL: SeamusG I think that we have all brain farted with Spektrum Tx - their documentation, well, uh, em, is lacking. Enquiring minds - what happens when you first, power up the Tx, then select and watch the "monitor" screen when you finally turn on the Rx? Do any of the channel "cursors" move when the Rx is fired up? This could isolate the "bad boy" behaviour to the Rx. If the cursors jump then the Tx is involved. Are all servos on separate channels? My Hanger 9 ShowTime 50 and GP Extra 300S (kit) are configured like yours. Both using an AR7000 so that I can run 'em all on separate channels and use mixes (5 for the AILE & AUX1 & 6 for the ELEV & AUX 2 on the DX7) to get 'em to pull together. Just checking - right AILE on AILE & right ELEV on ELEV with the left ones on the AUX channels? Uh, dare I ask if you have some spare servos to plug into the AR7000? Or, if you have another plane with a similar servo configuration, can you plug the erratic AR7000 into that plane to check the programming? Hey, this is fun RIGHT?
Seamus - I'm going to give the monitor a shot - good thought (I hadn't thought of that). I'm not too hopeful, honestly, because it behaves the same way if you turn the receiver on first and it's not receiving a signal from the Tx at all. All my servos are on separate channels so I can set the differentials instead of having to make all the fine adjustments with linkage. This receiver actually came from another plane that had a similar setup (except with analog standard servos and only a single elevator servo). I did check two of my other planes last night and verified that they both jump their control surfaces a little when they power up, but nowhere near as much as this. I think I already mentioned earlier, but my P-47 used to slam the flaps everytime I powered it up, so it's definitely not just this particular Rx. They are all AR7000s - I'm wondering if this behavior would be minimized with a newer Rx model (like an AR7010)... It's kind of an expensive test, though, and I'm not sure if it's worth the $$ unless someone has some anecdotal confirmation that it would help. I'm sure I have a couple of standard torque, analog servos sitting on the workbench somewhere - I'll try those and see what I get. Maybe narrow the behavior down a little. Also, on a side note, I'm going to plug a voltage regulator into it today to see if pulling it to 5.9v will help. I'm using 2S LiFE batteries for both ignition and Rx, rated at a nominal 6.6v. I don't expect to see a difference, but I'm willing to try anything that's reasonably within my reach at this point...

RE: Servos jumping on startup
I've used the DX8 for probably the last year and a half. During that time, I've had probably ten or twelve planes and helicopters on it. I won't claim to be an expert, but I'm pretty comfortable with programming it and created this model from a blank slot. I'm really not feeling like this is a model setup issue, mostly because once the Tx and Rx are talking, everything runs exactly like I expect. My wing setup is dual-aileron servos, dual elevator servos, and single rudder servo. The differentials and travels are all set as close as I could ask, and I'm happy with the operation. I've definitely had my share of "oops" moments setting up models in the radio in the past (almost lost my P-47 because I accidentally reversed a servo without realizing it), but I don't think it's the case this time.

I just sent an email to HH about it - hoping they'll have some information or a suggestion. Hell, if I could even get the duration of the event to be small enough that the servo didn't have time for a full swing, that would be *something*.

I can say that I've never experienced any strange issues once the Rx begins responding to commands from the Tx. Once they begin talking to each other, the connection and commands have always seemed rock-solid.

RE: Servos jumping on startup
In terms of the sequence of start-up, I was always taught to start your TX first to ensure that the RX was always receiving a control signal. Of course, it shouldn't make much of a difference with this technology, though, as the RX should go into Spektrum's Smart Safe mode if it doesn't detect a TX. In this situation, it doesn't matter whether the TX is on when the RX is fired up; the behavior is the same.
ORIGINAL: BarracudaHockey Power is reaching the servos before a signal. Some servos react to it, some stay put.
I hear you. I'm only concerned if they deflect far enough to over-stress the linkage and joints (which I hope to measure in a couple hours). If that's the case, I'm going to need to fix something. If I recall correctly, the AR7000 also supports a manual fail-safe configuration - I may try that next to see if that helps.

The servos are definitely being driven at this point. After the initial unexpected deflection and return to neutral, the digital servos will hold their position and refuse manual movement.

RE: Servos jumping on startup
Not a stupid thing to ask - yeah, I always fire up the TX first and give it time to initialize before turning on the RX. I can try another type of servo, but I don't have any other digital high-torque servos to compare against. I'm going to measure the throw today and see if they're going to full-stop or if they are only going to fully-programmed travel. Like I said - the annoyance I can live with, but the threat of damage I can't... Now that I'm thinking about it - I do seem to remember the flaps of my P-47 (RIP...) doing the same thing upon RX initialization. They would drop full swing for a second, then go back up.

Servos jumping on startup
I have just installed some Savox digital servos in my new 26% MXS-R with a Spektrum AR7000 and DX8 and I'm experiencing every servo jumping to full travel briefly before centering themselves. Any idea what's causing this, and if there's anything I can do to make it stop? These servos are high-torque and I'm concerned that they may be over-stressing the joints and linkage when they do this (honestly, I'm not positive they're jumping to full servo travel - it may be that they're only cycling full programmed travel). I have re-bound the receiver to the model after setting the travel in the radio as per Spektrum's instructions, but it didn't stop this from happening. Although I can't swear to it, I think I've experienced similar behavior in the past with my other planes, but most of them only used standard-type analog servos, so it wasn't anything to worry about. Thanks in advance, guys!

Yep - I bought the yellow one as well. She's beautiful - that's for sure. I was originally going to do a pseudo-Breitling scheme, but I think I'm going to stay simple. I should have her in the air next weekend (fingers crossed). I'm running a DLE 30 on mine, and it's my first gasser. I'll be relying strongly upon the expertise at my club to help me keep the engine happy and purring. Also - just wanted to say that Tim is awesome to deal with. I'm very glad I went with Redwing...

Just in case anyone is wondering, the Savox servos will work for surface mounting on the wings, but *JUST* barely. Another couple millimeters and they would leave an impression on the ultracote on the top of the wing. As it is, however, they fit fine.

I bought Savox SC0251MG servos for the control surfaces of the MXSR - they're about 4mm taller than the Futaba servos you used for your ailerons. Do you think there's any way they'll fit using the surface-mount, or should I just plan on going with the hidden mount? http://www.savoxusa.com/Savox_SC0251MG_Digital_Servo_p/savsc0251mg.htm http://www.futaba-rc.com/servos/specs-lineart/specs-futm0311.html
