RE: Great Planes Tiporare – Thirteen Year Build
Wok, I think the toughest part of your request is the ARF part. As stated, no tipos in production. There are Hanger 9 Pheonix 7 and a Great Planes Dirty Birdy ARFs available that you might be able to convert. I converted a Conquest IV to electric and I am very happy with the results. However, be aware that getting a motor that will wind up to "60 on a pipe" rpm's is challenging. My C4 is a slower more graceful pre-turnaround design that works well with a slightly larger prop and a little slower speed. Here a link to the build thread: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php Good luck in whatever you decide to do. You wont regret getting back into Classic Pattern. Nothing compares...... Doug

RE: Electric power f/60 size classic pattern planes
Dave, I am a few months ahead of you and have gone through quite a learning process which has been documented on my Conquest IV E-Powered build thread: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php I decided to go with a Scorpion 4025-10 because it has a higher KV and will work with a 12" prop which I will need on my trike-geared C4. An EFlight Power 60 or similar motor WILL NOT work for you because it is a lower KV and needs to swing a prop that is too big for your Curare. Come on over to RC Groups and feel free to chime in. A lot of guys have been very helpful to me in my journey. This information will help you as well. I am a few weeks away from my first flight so time will tell. Doug

RE: Newbie to Electric Conversions - TACON 160 Monster Motor question
Dont know anything about Tacon motors. If your converting an "older Nitro pattern plane" I doubt you have the prop clearance for the 18" or 19" prop that motor wants to swing. Older pattern models could mean a lot of things. If it is a Classic Pattern Plane from the 1980's then you might have room for up to a 13" or 14" prop. Therefore you will need a motor with a higher KV. See this thread for my attempt at converting a Classic Pattern plane. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php There is a lot to learn. I know, I'm going through it. Doug

RE: .60 tuned pipe swap to electric power?
ORIGINAL: Tommygun I know that every year, we have more advances in electric power and performance. Are we at the point yet where a hot, 2 stroke .60 piped motor can be replaced by electric power, and still maintain similar performance/top speed? I'd want to maintain 10 minute flight times as well. I have a couple of older pattern aircraft that I was considering doing a conversion on, since parts for the original engines are no longer available. Apologies in advance if previously discussed.
Tommy, I think the answer is "yes" and we will see in the next few weeks. I am converting a Conquest IV (Designed for a YS 60 on a pipe) to electric. I started a build thread on it last May on RC Groups. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php Come on over and take a look. Would love to have you add your thoughts to the process. Doug

Erik, Sorry for the mis-information on my part. Paul is right, it has been about 25 years!!! Paul is right (of course) about the dihedral. After I built mine I had to cut the wing and take dihedral out. I dont recall the measurement, but I am sure Paul is right on. Just wanted to support Paul's statement so you get it right the first time. Doug

RE: Aurora 60 Build Thread - Electric Power
Jeff, As I stated on the other thread your Aurora inspired me to convert my Conquest IV to E-Power. I will watch with interest as you test your 4020-8T. It will be interesting to compare it to the Scorpion 4025-10 that I purchased for my build. Here are the Scorpion-Calc results for the 4025-10. 6-cell Li-Po pack with an APC 12x10E prop: Amps – 56 Watts – 1244 RPM – 10,200 Thrust – 135 ounces (8 pounds 7 ounces) Pitch Speed – 96 MPH I am planning on using 6s 5000 mAh batteries. I little more capacity than you planned 4000's. Would 4000's be better?? I am thinking of using these Zippys: www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/%5F%5F8590%5F%5FZIPPY%5FFlightmax%5F5000mAh%5F6S1P%5F30C%5F.html What batteries are considering? thanks, Doug

RE: retracts for atlanta???
I am not sure. I believe that mine are the MK 0742 which do not seem to be made anymore. Follow this link to see pictures of my mains. Do not be concerned about the color, I think mine were anodized red but they typically were green. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php I have another set of MK's that "push" to retract the strut versus the ones in my Atlanta that "pull" to retract. I do not know if that matters or not. I would send Singapore an email and ask them for help in matching the size of the 0742's. They have been helpful to me. Try them at <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA">sales@singahobby.com. RE: retracts for atlanta???
ORIGINAL: FBaity The Atlanta was designesd to use MK mechanical retracts. I found the MK gear was excellent when rigged properlly. I had three Atlantas and really loved the way it would fly.
Completely agree with using MK Retracts. They will drop right into your sheeted wings and they are solid proformers. I would caution against e-flght electrics for the following reasons: 1.) it is a very tight fit for the header to get past the nose retract on an Atlanta. (See pcitures) not sure the E-Flight will work 2.) Tony F has them in his P7 and commented that he is not sure they were designed for nitro planes. He has had problems that he attributes to vibration from his engine. I set mine up to work on one servo and they have been fine. Resently had a problem with my nose gear but the problem was not related to the retracts but to the steering that had set up. By the way, use a separate servo in for nose steering on channel 7 and slave it to channel 4. Works great and give you an easy way to separate the nose gear and rudder steering. (Kevin's idea) Good Luck and congrats on getting an Atlanta. Doug
