RE: Just ain't my day!!!
Very, very sorry for your loss and a horrible thing to happen, but not surprising. Lipo’s are fire bombs that can light off at any time and when you least expect it. No matter how careful you are there is a very good possibility they will eventually get you. Let your guard down one time and poof!! Lots of stories just like yours. You are lucky you were not in the car!!

Price speculation and a funny (funny to me) story sorta related. Phoenix 7 price speculation...price discovery, the amount of money someone will actually pay for something NOW versus the value it could/should sell. I have reviewed the price points of the various offerings by Hangar (the building not the item used for clothing) 9 offerings and have come to the conclusion that the $279.95 to $299.95 like their P-51...is my best GUESS for the ARF. RE: Kaos and the SPA Masters
ORIGINAL: RMcL It's not a bad airplane and the .55AX ought to be the ''official'' engine of SPA!  It sure seems to be ''about right'' compared to the original set ups.  Ryan
Not a good idea! It would spike the interest in SPA so high that no one could fly and everything would implode.

Correct but that depends on where the feedback pot is connected in the gear train.

RE: Kraft Radio Conversion
I use RCD Hitec dual conversion narrow band receives that were made as AM and FM. You can still find them used on eb*y. They were made with Futaba, JR and other connectors. Again be careful what servo you use or you will not be able to center the servo output arm. As far as I know only Futaba servos have the offset keying on the arm that lets you center it with a Kraft radio.

RE: Kraft Radio Conversion
Bill, These guys can help you http://www.radiosouthrc.com/ Are your TXs AM or FM? If you decide to replace the RX you might want to look at Futaba servos because the Kraft center pulse is off a smidge from most other modern radios and the Futaba servo output arms are keyed so that if you move them around they can be centered using the Kraft TX.

RE: Kaos and the SPA Masters
Jason, Congratulations and thanks for sharing your experience preparing and flying the Kaos. Most interesting is how successful you were with the Kaos and a very cost effective little two stroke. Your setup is certainly a perfect example of the vision Mickey had for SPA. As most RCers follow the example set by the winner, maybe your example will make people realize they don’t have to hack the heck out of their aircraft to cram an ill fitting $370 boat anchor in the nose.

RE: Scoop! Hangar 9 Phoenix 7...ARF!!!
ORIGINAL: Tommygun
ORIGINAL: crankpin I'll take a wood paneled 1971 Chevrolet wagon with the clam shell rear door. Vince
Yeah, actually, I would too, being a hardcore GM fan. My grandfather had a huge white 1973 Impala clamshell wagon, smallblock 400- still wish I took it off his hands when he was offering. Would've been a heck of a plane hauler for sure. I referenced the Squire in the scenario since they were more iconic- hence more familiar to everyone than the GM Estate wagons of the day. I'm half tempted to pick up a clamshell if I run across a good deal. Anyone know what equipment I'd need to replicate an early 1970's era field box to set on the tailgate? Already have an old Kraft Gold box- gotta go for the whole effect ya know.
What could be more American than that, a GM clamshell wagon, Kraft radio and an American designed Phoenix 7 that was hand crafted by the Horizon Hobbies’ craftsmen out on Fieldstone Road in Champaign, IL USA. It would be interesting to see some pictures of the Phoenix 7s being built.

RE: Another Blue Angel build
I do not find it necessary to pin hinges if they are glued into the balsa hinge slot with epoxy. That assumes you use DuBro hinges that have holes in the tab. The epoxy flows through the holes and locks them in place. I also like to assemble the control surfaces after the painting or MonoKote work is complete. Many years ago I had a situation where I wanted to remove a hinge and I found it next to imposable. The epoxy makes the balsa slot very firm near the pin area on the hinge so it cannot flex up and down in the slot under load. I think I covered this in one of my threads, but I use a piece of ABS plastic the same width and thickness of the hinge tab but longer to work slow setting epoxy into the hinge slot. I then clean any excess epoxy off the slot area with alcohol and then assemble the surface and tape them to hold them in place. Of course you want to test fit everything first so you know you have the correct fitment with zero gap.

RE: Scoop! Hangar 9 Phoenix 7...ARF!!!
With all the excitement about this, I assume this ARF will be made by Horizon Hobbies employees here in America? So your hard earned money used to buy the ARF will go to supporting jobs in the United States. If that is case, then bravo to Horizon Hobbies for supporting American values and that would make it a good ARF that people could be proud to own.

RE: Another Blue Angel build
The 86 carb works with the pump and has the fuel return line. Test fit your pipe header to make sure you have clearance on the lower side of the fuse below the exhaust port. Might also be a good time to install the dowel in the wing for the pipe mount.

RE: The Best P-51 Mustang
ORIGINAL: Cyntec Hi There! Like so many others, it's my dream to own and fly a P-51 Mustang. I've finally decided to buy one but there are so many choices out there I don't know which one to get. My preference is for a scale, detailed kit or ARF that's as realistic looking as possible. Not being insanely hard to fly would be a plus too. Any ideas? PS. I've stumbled upon a Nick Ziroli P-51 Mustang kit which uses a fiberglass fuse instead of cloth covered which would allow me to add more detail. Has anyone ever heard of this kit and if so what do you think the pluses and minuses are? Thanks in advance!
I would give anything made in the USA priority. That would put Nick’s kit on top.

RE: FK SBA 60 Speeda - Build
David, When I re-sprayed the white on my Tiporare http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2827386/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm I overlapped the white MonoKote by about 1/32. I used LustreKote white primer and white color over very well aged Perfect Paint white that had yellowed. The tricky part was finding a tape that was not too tacky so it would not pull up the MonoKote when I removed it. I overlapped mostly as a way to repaint it not to seal it but it did seal the edge. The other thing about painting over MonoKote is if it ever gets a wrinkle you can’t use a MonoKote iron on it.

RE: FK SBA 60 Speeda - Build
David, My responses to your questions: What's your technique for the wheel well finishing? Answer: I cut and shape the wheel wells and gear mounts before sheeting the wing. I then line the wheel wells with 1/64 plywood after the sheeting is installed so I have a nice sharp edge around the opening. Then I just brush on flat black Rust-oleum after the MonoKote is done and seal the MonoKote edge at the same time. At one time I used balsa but found the plywood much easier to finish and I think it adds more strength in the wheel well area. Do you use resin in the wells without glass and simply apply LK primer or do you go further? Answer: The Rust-oleum fills the plywood grain very well so no sealer is required. If you want to you can sand out the first coat and do a second. Do you paint the wells at the same time as the wing center or after covering? Answer: The center section is primed and color spayed. See above for wheel wells. Do you spray clear over the wing center overlapping the MK seam? Answer: I over lap the MonoKote on to the painted edge and seal it to the paint. Need to be careful with this that the iron does not touch the paint. On the top of the wing the MonoKote extends under the fuselage fillet. On the bottom of the wing it extends over the paint about ¼. Hope this info helps clarifies my process.

RE: FK SBA 60 Speeda - Build
Inspired by Dahl22’s (David) work on his Blue Angel, I drug out the Speeda today and wet sanded down the last coat of grey primer and sprayed on some light coats of LustreKote white primer. LustreKote color requires the LustreKote white primer as the base coat to get a MonoKote color match. I’ll let the primer set for a few days, give it a light wet sanding and then start the color coats. The LustreKote primer does not fill or sand well so I make it the last coat in the primer process. To be continued…
