RE: P_51 Mustang crashes into crowds at Reno
ORIGINAL: saramos I was reviewing the Vemio video this evening. There is a audible pop that acompanies the moment of failure, or rather, just after the first visible signs of the failure, which can be accounted for by the distance to the event and the speed of sound. To me, it sounds like a small piece of metal breaking under tension, perhaps a bold or cable or other linkage device. The sound occurs at the end of 7:38 in the regular speed footage, at the end of 7:48 in the slow motion footage, and at about half way through 8:14 in the super slow motion footage. Scott
I have a good friend who worked on the unlimited planes for several years and he said he also heard a pop just before the pitch up. It could have been the trim tab/cable breaking or something else. He said the boil off system was in the tail along with nitrious oxide tanks and if one of these blew it could affect the trim linkage. IMHO the way the plane was destroyed it will be most likely be an educated quess to what caused the initial event that caused the crash. He could not believe that there was no fire.

RE: Lado retracts, do the really exist?
ORIGINAL: ZERO-322 I wouldn't say you guys were the last, I ordered in Oct of 2009 and got mine within two weeks or so, so maybe overlooked or un lucky is probably a better description, hope you get it worked out Mike
I guess I was the only one to order the 60-6 retracts. Maybe that is why it is taking so long. At this point I would take the narrow as well. I thought when Jeremy came on board I was going to get mine but now I am starting to worry a little. Still no reply with the new e-mail address.
ORIGINAL: TOMAPOWA Back on to the main subject of this thread: ''Lado retracts, do the really exist?'' They DO exist... Even on Ebay.... LOL [;)] (No mention of any warantee unfortunately.... [:o]) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280469752296&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123
Wow, those Lado's with struts went for over $300 shipped! What a pile of junk! And they sold for that much without knowing who assembled or CNC'd them and without mention of warantee! I only wish I had a hundred sets to sell for that price! I may start sleeping with mine...

RE: Shock Cooling our Gas engines.....
ORIGINAL: Tired Old Man Cost me over $13,000.00 to rebuild the engine in my 152 after a cracked head was discovered. Until it was used a rental on lease back it never had a problem, but all the student pilot renters and their instructors always went from wot cruise to 1,300 rpm for the descent when they flew it. None of them knew how to push the nose over and only slightly reduce power to keep the cht's and speed up. Not a high performance engine but the consensus among the A&P's and I/A's was shock cooling. 1,100 hours on the engine when it was found during a 100 hour inspection.
TOM, I'd be willing to bet that there are more jugs cracked from "shock heating" than "shock cooling". From my own experience the CHT's increase faster in a WOT climb than they decrease in a glide. I converted two 152's to a Sparrow Hawk Conversion and from that day on had little to no engine trouble, used less fuel too.

RE: Shock Cooling our Gas engines.....
ORIGINAL: Super08
ORIGINAL: pe reivers Indeede some consider it a myth. Also, some engineers have calculated the bumblebee's inability to take off in flight. So I hardly ever say never.
So now I guess the question is....How do you shock cool a bumblebee? I vote for a can of compressed liquid nitrogen [:D][:)]
Now I like that!! Another thing to consider, real airplanes drop thousands of feed at a lower power setting at wide temperature differentials while models reduce power and drop only hundreds of feet at basically the same temperature.

RE: Shock Cooling our Gas engines.....
ORIGINAL: ndb8fxe The OP has an interesting thought. The common problem with shock cooling in full scale is with high performance airplane that can fly at high altitutes (turbo normalized). The problem is that you are cruizing along at a high power setting in very cold air and if you don't plan your descent well you have to pull too much power out and ''glide'' down with no power thus shock cooling the motor and decrease it's life expectancy. The shock cooling doesn't happen immediately, but over time throughout the descent. I think in general we abuse the crap out of our rc engines, however I don't think it's the shock cooling that does it. For one reason is that you can't pull back the power very long before you will have to reunite with terra firma. You can even take a look full scale aerobatic airshow perfomances. How do they treat their engines? It doesn't seem to me that they are worried about shock cooling. It is not like the full scale which a descent from 12000ft can put 20 minutes of shock cooling on the engine. Having said that if we could start our engines and slowly bring them up to temp and fly them for hours while slowly reducing power and finally landing my bet would be we could put a ton more hours on these engines than we do. One of the thing I see at my field that I think destroys engines is the guys that take thier cold engines and start them and go to full power immediately. There are tons of things we do that shorten the life of these engines. I don't worry about it because I fly RC for fun and it would not be fun flying RC with the same discipline as flying full scale. It would be purpose defeating.
Several years ago I read an article I think was on the EAA site or AOPA site or maybe Light Plane Maintenance, I can't remember which, by several engineers which proved mathematically that it is impossible to shock cool an engine. The math went way over my head but it was the consensus of those involved that it could not be done. They were too many btu's even at idle to accomplish any sort of "shock" cooling. Not trying to start a fuss just passing on what I had read.

Motorman, why don't you run it? You have a spare engine and what you have is a parts engine right now anyway. It might last a long time, and you can compare the performance to the stock engine!

RE: Electric Retracts - Modifying existing Air/Servo-operated Retracts
If I were betting I would bet that we are going to be knee deep in electric retracts before the summer is over. Everyone and their monkey will have a version to sell with struts, color cordinated and I can't wait!!!!! The price will plummet and most ARF's will include a set just like motor mounts and fuel tanks. Mechanicals, retract servos and pneumatics will be worthless. But, what do I know????????

RE: Lado retracts would you ?
G-Pete said: "This money comes not from some retracts - in my opinion he does contract work. When ever he has a spare minute he makes some retracts. If he had a week he could catch up with any back order and put some stuff on the shelf. But, he has to pay bills so he takes money and whenever there is time may you get your stuff done. " IMO- This has to be the best explanation and probably the closest to the truth yet. Now, he is swamped and can not afford to make retracts. You spend your time where the money is. Using this hypothesis the mistake he made was accepting money without an explanation that they would be built in his spare or slack time. I have talked to Doug numerous times and I don't think he is a crook or thief, I think he has just painted himself into a corner and feels that the best way to get out of this mess is to work out of it but now he can not afford to so he goes recluse to avoid the heat. I don't think he planned it this way at all. As for myself, I'll continue to wait, I got time, and if I loose my money it will not kill me, I've lost more in the stock market so no big deal. I really think he will deliver probably later more that sooner, I just wish I had ordered more sets, I can wait for five sets just as easy as one. [:D]
