Doug, Thanks for pointing that out. That's what I get for not being more careful. I see in post #3 where he listed what was in it when he weighed it. Still impressive!

RE: Extreme Composite Pegasus
First of all GORGEOUS airplane!!! Secondly, how in the HELL did you get a full 2 meter plane to come in just over 8 pounds? I am being very careful with my new Sickle and I will still be lucky to be a hair under 11 pounds!! I thought the weight listed earlier in the thread was a typo then you lister it again! How do you like the Pletty Advance? Just installed mine. That is amazing. Congratulations. Hope to see you at a D4 event sometimes. Until then we will take good care of Joe. Anthony D4 DVP

RE: What to do? 2m Patternship
I see you are in Ohio, I am the District 4 VP and would be glad to help you in any way requuired. Just PM me and we can chat. We also have a great pattern group here in the Cleveland area, it might be worth making the 45 minute to an hour drive to join us during a few practice sessions. You will learn a ton flying with other pattern pilots. Just give a shout. Anthony aabdu@sbcglobal.net

RE: WREN USA OPEN DAY 2011
I looked at the details of the event and the starting times on the Wren website but did not see an address. Should we assume that it will be held at the "mailing address" listed on the website. Would 1027 Southampton Drive Decatur Indiana 46733 Get me there? If not, what is the correct address to put into the GPS? Is Saturday the best day to come down if I need someone to look at my turbine or to buy support equipment? Thank you

RE: St Clairsville Wrap Up
Ouch, I am still smarting about that one. Bob pulled the ultimate "you don't EVER get to beat me" by skipping the last contest of the year. He plans to move up to masters next year so I have to move up just to try to get revenge on him. This rivalry is to be continued! I still have the shirt by the way and won't get rid of it until I consistently beat him heads up. Looks like I better take good care of it.

RE: Wren SS starting issues please help!!!
PROBLEM SOLVED.... Kinda. First of all I would like to thank everyone that offered their assistance, it is much appreciated. A special thank you goes out to Jim Hiller who donated a ton of his precious flying time to help me get the Wren sorted out. As it turns out I had a number of problems. 1. Even though I did not get a glow error, the glow plug element was not out far enough or working properly in general. With it out I could light it with an igniter it would glow orange, however it was not getting hot enough at the exposed tip to ignite the gas, which leads to problem 2 2. Too much propane. My propane needle valve was too open so the engine was getting too much fuel to ignite. Couple that with a cool glow plug and you got problems. 3. Gas solenoid was not functioning properly. Upon inspection some of the guys noticed that gas just kept flowing even when we weren't trying to start the motor. One of the guys (whose name I unfortunately can't remember (I think it was Bill)) painstakenly took it apart and found a huge hunk of crud in it. After all that we just kept trying to start it until we found the needle valve sweet spot (kind of). We did get it running and with a couple more adjustments were able to fly it, but it is not starting consistently enough for me. I would like it to work like a Wren should and start first or second attempt every time. I will keep making fine adjustments to it until it does. I have read the manual several times over, but there is no substitute for the assistance of an experienced jet modeler. Thanks again guys Anthony

RE: Wren SS starting issues please help!!!
Mark, I did a search and just found out that too much gas can be just as bad. I just assumed it wasn't getting enough. In the morning I will close the valve and start fresh from 1 turn out and work my way out and see if that helps. Silly question, how do I bypass the solenoid and still meter starting fuel to the motor?

RE: Wren SS starting issues please help!!!
Martin, Thanks for the heads up. I actually spoke with Ron of Wren today (thank you Ron and I'm sorry to bother you on a holiday weekend!!!!). Took a very close look at the glow plug and it is operating properly. Power is set to 36. Tried it again with no changes. Took the propane tank out and gave it a careful once over, everything looks fine there. Refilled the tank, even though it did not seem to take very much power max. I saw the starting fuel go in for about two seconds then nothing so I figured (perhaps incorrectly) that it was full or had a least enough for one start. Tried again, same result. My guess would be that either there is NO gas in the propane tank or the gas that is in there is not getting past the propane solenoid, I don't quite know how to fix that but I will be up all night trying. Thanks again for the help. Anthony

Wren SS starting issues please help!!!
Let me start by saying I have run everything from Wankel 30s to YS 170 DZs, however I am very new to turbines. I have a Wren SS mounted in a Boomerang Sprint that used to start and run perfectly! The plane has two trim flights on it but otherwise very little time. I have run the motor in my front yard 5 or 6 times and it has always started flawlessly, and that is how it was when I put it up last winter. I got the pane out this year and fueled it up, including Powermax. It started up and ran well. I shut it down and went to do my chores. The next day I tried to start it I had very little luck.I eventually got it running but it flamed out (was probably low on fuel), I fueled it up and after a bit of doing got it running again then shut it down. I have not been able to start it up since. For some reason, it just WILL NOT LITE! I have tried adding more Powermax, opening the valve after the solenoid to get more gas, and numerous restart attempts. When I try to start it this is exactly what happens. 1. Turn on the power to everything (all batteries freshly charged) 2. Put the trim in the start position and look at the display (it says ready) 3. Advance then lower the throttle, display shows each step (glow test, ignition, RPMs, etc) 4. Electric motor spools up the engine.... then nothing 5. Eventually the display says "Timed Out" while the motor coasts to a stop. 6. Shut everything down then repeat I did notice condensation on the top of starting fluid tank, I don't know if that means anything just figured I would add every detail so you experienced Wren users can help solve this issue. I feel like it is something simple but I just don't know what to try next. I would appreciate any and all help you could provide. Thank you Anthony

Byron Hurricane fan?
Occasionally someone will have a lead on the old hard to find Hurricane fan for use with the Byron ducted fan system. I currently find myself in need of one as I have converted my old Byron to EDF and am dying to try it with the Hurricane fan. Does anyone know if it is still available? I assume I will be stuck searching the used/attic market to find one, SO, if anyone has one sitting around or know someone who does, please let me know. Thanks Anthony aabdu@sbcglobal.net

RE: Where have all the pattern snobs gone
Great "we're not at the nats but will pretend life goes on" thread Jim. Actually, I am picking up Pete C and we are heading down to watch the last round of semis and the finals tomorrow. Back on topic I have been into pattern for years and have NEVER witnessed pattern snobbery. Mind you, there have been people and conversations that I could have interpreted as such if I were looking for a reason to call then snobs, but, like everything else in life, people will hear what they want to hear and come to their own conclusions regardless of what the reality is. I will say this, I love pattern and pattern people, having had the opportunity to meet Jim and Ann (Rick, Dennis, and many many, many others) and fly with them has made both my enjoyment of the hobby, and I say this in all honesty, my life better! You are all the best that the world has to offer and help me maintain what is left of my fragile faith in humanity [:)] Thank you Anthony

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Brenner, CONGRATULATIONS on the successful test flights. I am absolutely beside myself that I went back to the hotel early and missed the test flights. You know how very interested I was to see that baby in action. Having seen it in person and gotten the disassembled tour by the designer himself, I have to say it is one amazing piece of artwork! Very well designed and well thought out with easy maintenance and high performance in mind. And it is beautiful to boot. Great job Brenner And oh yeah, I am still on the list for at least one of those[:D] Anthony

RE: OOPS?
I wasn't sure if TP did their own repairs or had a distributor handle that. I have no problem driving down for a practice session. I am planning to get in as many flights as possible before the first contest. I was under the impression that Rick was thinking about heading our way for some practice. We have hosted a number of the D-4 guys already and at times get a pretty good group going (4 or 5 active pattern flyers). If you guys plan a practice session one weekend I will drive down.

OOPS?
I was out flying today and had a momentary laps of good sense. I managed to connect my Thunder Power 1010C charger up incorrectly and poof[sm=confused.gif] A spark in the area of the cooling fan, a wisp of of smoke and that was that. Now I need to get it repaired and that raises a few questions; 1. Is it serviceable? I would assume it is but until now never needed to find out. 2. Where is the best place to send it? 3. Is this one of those situations where it is almost as costly to have it repaired as it would be to replace it? 4. Since I am going to have to sink a few bucks into another charger, is there another brand or a latest and greatest upgrade type of charger I should consider instead? I was planning on running two chargers (and still will) so my tendency is to stay with a matching set. I have another TP1010C and balancer set that is still fully functional. The balancer I run with the smoked one is still good. Does anyone have one they want to sell... Cheap? Thanks Anthony

RE: Does this sound like your club?
Rick, I just have one question for you.... Do you have any Gray Poupon? [:D] Actually, the Aurora club Mark, Jim, Mike Kilein, and I fly at has been great!! There are only about 12 to 15 active non pattern members and they all have a pretty healthy respect for what we do and will generally work into the rotation. We rarely have more than one plane in the air at a time and it all seems to work great. On the other hand, we (the pattern contingent) work hard to be respectful of their right to the field. It is not uncommon for all pattern flying to stop while a member takes a flight or two with his heli or sportplane. I hope things stay they way they are. In the end I believe it is all about mutual respect and good ol' fashion common courtesy. Anthony

RE: Pattern contest... what makes it worth it?
I agree with everyone else[8D] Also I LOOOOOVVVEEEEE aviation, and the miracle of controlled flight. Nothing and I mean NOTHING flies like a pattern plane. Competing with one just comes naturally, it makes sense. Not competing in pattern if you own a pattern plane (and everyone should) Is like having a souped up car and not pulling up next to some guy at a light and revving the engine. It's the adrenaline rush of putting your best against his/her best and seeing what happens. Pattern and competition are the essence of manliness (grunt grunt grunt), the preparation, the focus, the intensity, when I fly and compete it gives me a chance to learn something about myself in a competitive but friendly and supportive environment. There is nowhere to hide on the flightline! Do I have the mental toughness to be my best when the pressure is on, or will I crap out and land three maneuvers before the end of my pattern, or fuel the wrong airplane, or forget which direction I need to roll or which rudder to give. How do you know if you will choke under pressure without putting yourself in the pressure cooker? How can you improve your performance underr pressure without practicing under pressure (competition). Oh, and the people aren't bad either! I love my pattern friends. Damn I got myself all excited... Where's my wife... COME HERE WOMAN it's time for some low passes[sm=48_48.gif] One other thing. Big time RC and by extension the pursuit of pattern is insane! No one but other pattern people understand what the hell is wrong with me to do this for fun. Anthony

RE: Ducted fans are reversed
Bring a garbage bag!!!! CJ, this isn't personal but one of my pet peeves is when people buy these potentially dangerous planes almost ready to fly and think they can fly them unassisted. That is a relatively new phenomena that came with the widespread introduction of ARFs and RTFs. It used to be that you had no choice but to learn step by step as you took months to construct a plane. Now, anyone with a checkbook can get in the air in a weekend. I can't blame you though, trainers look boring and kind of lame. Given the chance I would have wanted to start with something sexy as well. Get an experienced pilot to maiden the plane for you, then after you've seen it fly, put it on the shelf and admire it while you learn to fly a trainer. Trust me on that one! Think about it this way, if you wanted to get a pilots license and fly a full scale airplane would you just go to the dealer, buy one, then strap yourself in? No you wouldn't, because you would DIE, if you even got off the ground. Instead, you would take lessons and learn all the nuances associated with flying an airplane. RC is no different!!! If you do decide that these things are toys and you've seen it done and can do it, please be safe and try to aim away from any spectators when you crash. Thanks Anthony P.S. I reread my post and realized that I might have come off like a schmuck or an A-hole. That was not my intention, I just want to do what the person or company selling you the plane would not do. To caution you that flying an RC plane is no less difficult than flying a "real" plane, and can result in injury to yourself or others including property damage. When that happens it is bad for everyone. In addition, you will have a much more pleasant experience if you get some help. Not knowing how to reverse the motors or how to take off is a sure sign that there will be trouble. If you get it off the ground your flight will probably last about 10 seconds and may forever sour you on a fantastic hobby. Please slow down and get some help.

Quick simple Sprint question?
I am so close to finishing my Sprint I can taste it[:D] Unfortunately I hit another very minor snag. I was doing the final set up and went to tighten the set screws that affix the outer wings to the main wing and fuselage and can't for the life of me figure out what size they are as they were not included with the plane (which I received partially completed). There are aluminum hard points of some sort in the main wing / fuselage section but I can't figure out what size they are. A standard 4-40 is way to loose but a fine thread 6/32 is too large. I have tried several other thread/size combinations with no luck and have also made sure the threads were clean (I have the same problem with all six hard points by the way) The first couple of threads of the 6/32 seems like it wants to thread then it stops dead after that. I don't want to force them because I am afraid I will strip the threads then I will be in a world of hurt. If anyone knows what size those are or what thread pattern I would GREATLY appreciate the heads up? Thanks again, you guys have always come through for me and I appreciate it. Anthony

RE: Show me your brakes
I have the exact same set as in the picture siclick33 sent. It's just that the arms on the brakes just do not fit over the struts. It's all so well machined that I was surprised that it wasn't a perfect fit. It looks like I just have brakes with the wrong width. Looks like I need to send them back. I was not excited about trying to file down the brake hubs. The picture above is just what I was looking for. Now I know how much engagement there should be between the brakes and the struts. You guys are a huge help!!!!! Thanks again Anthony

Show me your brakes
I am completing my first jet (a Boomerang Sprint) and ran into a little snag. I have the Dreamworks pneumatic brakes and struts on the plane and am in the process of setting it all up. I went to install the brakes but they are not wide enough on the strut side to fit over the flats on the strut. They bump into the strut and barely engage it. As it is, if I install it like that I would think as soon as I hit the brakes, the entire assembly would rotate and I will have zero stopping power. Now the questions: 1. Are the brake hubs supposed to fit all the way over ths strut or just hit the strut and get tightened down against it? 2. Is it OK to file away some of the material to make them fit? If so, do I file down the strut or the brakes? 3. If anyone has a picture of their completed brake assembly I would love to see it? Thanks in advanced for your help, I have searched the internet and found tons of pictures of brakes but none assembled on the struts. Attached is a picture of my nearly completed Sprint with Wren SS. I have gotten a lot of help from local jet modelers (Thank you Dave Rigotti) and really appreciate it. You guys are a great bunch!!! Anthony
