RE: OS 95AX Mid-Range Problem
I have a Thunder Tiger 91 that has behaved in a similar fashion. I had many dead stick landings while flying mid- throttle. In sorting out this engine I have found that it takes about 2 gallons of fuel to break in the engine and the factory idle setting is way too rich. It has taken considerable patience to adjust the needles. Once the engine gets close to being broken in, the engine responds appropriately as the low end needle and high end needles are adjusted. I am using SW 15% nitro OS#8 plug and a 14x3w APC prop. It turns at 9000 rpm and the vector flight Sukohi has unlimited vertical performance. No more dead stick landings. Some have recommended using an OS F plug but I have not had to resort to that. The engine starts very easily. It takes time and patience to get it right, leaning the low end and getting the HS needle just right. A lot more work than most engines I have had! Do be sure there is no problem with your fuel tank plumbing.

RE: Airplanes for Magnum .52 FS
I have the magnum.52 FS in the Slow Poke and it is a great match. I did need to add a couple OB ounces of weight to the nose. The SP is fun. It can be flown so slowly u can walk beside it. It also does nice loops. Rolls are tough to do though.

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
Sundancer 50 ARF is a beautiful plane. It flies great with a YS 63. The Kiwi was the first kit I had done in many years. It was a very straight forward build and flies well with an OS .40 LA. The profile Ultrasport also went together easily and flies very well. I bought a Hog biplaine and a Kobra kit to build. Needless to say I have enjoyed all of the SIG planes I have flown. It would be a significant loss if these kits disappeared. I am happy to hear they are recovering.

RE: Thunder tiger 91 mounted at 225 deg. dies
Thank you all for your suggestions...It seems as though I need to spend more time with the engine fiddling with the needle valves.... I will try that first. The engine has the "sputter and die" action so I will lean it out little by little. Idling on the ground fore about 10 sec and going to wide open throttle produces a very nice transition, actually. That is why I am at a loss... any way, I just don't have it right yet. If that does not work, I will go to the hotter plug. I usually fly 4c so I have many 4c glow plugs. I understand about the fuel tank location. I forgot to mention in my description of the problem that the carb is just slightly below the mid line of the fuel tank. I have not had a problem with flooding. I will post the results of my further futzing. The engine is in an old VectorFlight Sukohi that flies beautifully when the engine is running [;)]

Thunder tiger 91 mounted at 225 deg. dies
I have a relatively new thunder tiger 91 pro 2c mounted at 45 degrees off of inverted midline that stalls especially when in the mid range of throttle travel. I have had 3 dead stick landings out of four flights. The engine is run on 15% nitro with a castor/ synthetic blend. It was broken in carefully on the bench. It has about 1.5 gallons of fuel through it. Prop is 15x4w. Plug is an OS #8. I have mounted .46 2c engines like this w/o difficulty in the past. I have leaned out the low end with some improvement in that it seems to take longer to die. Perhaps I need to lean it out further? I do not believe it is over heating. It will idle all day at 2600rpm. It will run at full throttle 10000rpm, completely draining the 16 oz fuel tank. I have read that a 4c plug can help but have not yet tried that. Are there other suggestions? I have a friend with the identical problem with a similarly mounted .30 4 stroke and OS 91 FX. Is it the 225 degree mounting position?

RE: Thunder Tiger f-91 4 stroke
I agree. I have several TT FS engines and use 18% oil and 15% nitro to break them in and have had no trouble. Like the gentleman above says just make sure to tun the engine rich while breaking it in. Although somewhat heavy they are strong reliable engines in my assessment.

RE: SIG
SIG is still delivering kits. I built an Ultimate 100 last year and just received a Hog Biplane today. They are also making many other kits. Their selection of ARFs is somewhat limited but check out their web site. I have used both the web site and the phone to place orders and have found them to fill and deliver my orders promptly.

RE: Dirty Birdy 60
I was given an HB 61 with the piston throttle. It is a GREAT engine. It is in a SIG Ultimate 100 where it is a bit too much engine. But mine is very reliable and provides unlimited vertical for that plane. I really like that engine. I am using a McCoy long-reach glow plug. propped right it might be an excellent engine for your project. I am considering building the Dirty Birdy myself. Looks like an excellent kit!

RE: Good first biplane?
If you can find one the 50 size SIG Sundancer is great fun. A YS 63 (70) is a perfect engine for it! Unlimited vertical nice spins hard to stall nice glide path. It also fits in the back of my truck w/o disassembly. The quality is excellent and it goes together easily. I imagine the big one is good too!

RE: How to remove scratches on clear vacumm formed part?
happich simichrome metal polish Depending on how badly scratched the plastic is, this works very well. I used it to clear the canopy on a GP Phantom that was ruined because of a solvent it was exposed to. It took work, but it was nearly perfectly clear when I was through. It will also remove the clouding due to CA exposure. This also does a nice job on chrome.

RE: Sig Kits
I agree with the opinion that SIG makes very good kits. I built a Kiwi followed by am Ultimate. I found the instructions easy to follow and the planes fly quite well. The Kiwi is very strong and pilot error resulted in a crunched nose that needed work. The Ultimate is a bit overpowered with a HB .61. But it flies beautifully and is easy to land.

RE: O.S. 95 AX !!!
I have been asked to help with the reliability of this engine in an Aeroworks 60-90 size Yak. The problem is that it runs fine on the ground but after 4-7 minutes in the air it dies. We have tried the following: Thinking it was running too hot, ran it without without the cowl Thinking it was running to lean, made it a little rich. Thinking there was too much tubing made the tank as close to the firewall as possible. Thinking that it was not broken in ran a half gallon or 15% S/W fuel (it really runs well on the ground) Thinking it was the glow plug, changed it to a new OS#8. Thinking there might be an air leak changed the "O" ring in the needle valve. Thinking there might be "something" in the fuel tank, re-plumbed it. Thinking there might be a problem with the idle mixture, reset it and the engine idles beautifully. I have not tried a "F" plug, but there are some that can make this engine run with an OS 8. The fuel is fresh and runs well in all other engines I have. In spite of this attention, the last time the plane was flown (4 times) the flights ended in a dead-stick landing. I am not loyal to any engine manufacturer, having a variety of engines from OS (2 stroke and 4 stroke) Thunder Tiger (2 stroke and 4 stroke), Magnum (2 stroke and 4 stroke), YS, Saito and even a lovely HP 61. I use them as weight, power and aesthetics dictate. I can usually make them run very well. This one has me baffled. the engine has been sent to OS for evaluation. Should there be anything interesting that comes of it I shall be happy to share. I think this is a beautiful engine and should be desirable if it can be reliable.

RE: Thunder Tiger F-54S giving me a hard time!
Hi Most posting replies have more experience than I but I shall share my experience. I have 2 of these engines both mounted inverted. One in a little Staudaucher, the other is in a TF Nobler. With my first engine ( in the Staudaucher) I mounted the new engine in the plane and had a similar experience to yours... the engine would not run right and the header would fall off. Well, I futzed with the muffler so much I finally stripped the threads in the head. So I yanked out the engine and out it on a stand. I JB welded the muffler into the head, set the the valve lash, and ran a lot of fuel through it. I did not drill out the air bleed hole, but I did get the engine to idle reliably with the air bleed screw completely opening the air bleed hole. It is a very nice engine. I do not have max and min RPMs or have the prop size at hand although I do use APC props. With that experience, I ran the second engine on a stand until it performed well. The air bleed screw is all of the way out. Checked the valve lash and mounted it in the Nobler. I have no complaints about either engine. I just needed to be patient. (no problems yet with the header on this engine) I hope that you find that yours runs nicely as well.

RE: whats better the os 1.2 surpass 3 pump or no pump
I have 3 OS 120 Surpass IIIs. I have one in a Sig Mayhem, a 120 size Velox and another in the GP Ryan STA. I had problems with one pump because I got petroleum based oil in it. I have followed the break in directions and they all have been good engines for me. They might not be the lightest or spin the fastest, but they are (for me) reliable and have decent torque. In the Mayhem and the Velox I had an 18x6 (My error should be 16x 6) wide prop. While I do not know whet the RPM that they spin at is, both would go vertical. I can not hover so I don't know if they would do that. The engine does need a decent intake and outlet for cooling.

RE: Aerobatic Biplane for an OS 120 III
Also good suggestions. I have a Super Skybolt with a TT 91 FS. I like it, but it flies a bit heavy and I think the heavy OS 120 would accentuate that handling. I will keep my eye out for the Ultimate. I thought the Dave Patrick version was a very handsome looking plane. I have a small Sundancer that is a blast with the YS 63. As you gather, I am looking for a fun home for the OS 120 and am hoping for a biplane. I suppose I should consider the GP Super Stearman however it seems that it would not be quite as aerobatic. Have you ever flown the Cermark Pitts?

Aerobatic Biplane for an OS 120 III
Can anyone recommend an aerobatic biplane suitable for an OS 120 III. It seems like most ARFs available are either too big or too small. I realize that the OS engine has a weight problem. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

RE: Problems balancing wood props??
Regarding the SIG balancer, the plane balancing part is very nice, but I prefer the Dubro for balancing props because it is more adaptable to larger props and there seems to be less friction in the bearings.

RE: Solvent to Dislove Old Castor Oil Deposits.
I, too, have used the crock pot method of removing "gunk" with great success. I use ® Prestone (the yellow stuff) and put the crock pot on it's lowest setting. I cook overnight. Be careful because the parts are still very hot as is the antifreeze. Any mildly adherent gunk is easily removed with a tooth brush. Makes the old mufflers (and other parts) look brand new! Oh, ditto on the oiling the parts after they are dry.
