RE: Government (temporarily) shuts down model flying in Atlanta
ORIGINAL: hooker53 I'v seen this several times in the last few years or so. A lot in the last 19 month's. I have always wondered what would happen if you did fly. Would a bunch of big unmarked black vans come in sideways and on two wheels at your field out in nowhere??? Just wondering.
The most important is obvious, you would be risking inciting more attention and higher regulations towards model aviation. The feds don't have a sense of humor when it comes to this stuff.

RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
Congrats, she sure is pretty! Glad to see you venturing into the dark side. I don't know your experience level but nitro has some distinct differences of its own and, the NP Bobcat can be a challenging plane to fly and land. I recommend you have an experienced glow/airplane person trim this bird out and help you get acquainted with her. That's my .02 and it's worth about what you paid for it. Best of luck.

RE: Bobcat-Confused why CG in forums is 3
If you read the original Bobcat thread you will see that I had problems with airstream interfering with muffler pressure (as the muffler is mounted backwards) I fixed the problem with an exhaust deflector and later went to a pitts muffler. Also, you do not want this plane tail heavy in any respect, I experimented with rearwards CG's and the plane and my underwear barely survived the landing.

RE: Bobcat-Confused why CG in forums is 3
ORIGINAL: Fledgling I just measured my lines: My fuel pickup line is 15''. The is starting from the brass line that is an elbow I bent coming out of the fuel tank so that it points back to the rear, then the fuel line hooks on that and the fuel line is 15''. so total fuel line and metal/brass elbow is maybe 16 to 17? I suppose you all will tell me this is too long??? what is the max length before issues? thanks
I dunno, I have always wondered if the fact that the fuel is not fighting against momentum of the plane keeps the Bobcat (fuel flowing backwards) type system out of trouble. We all know what happens to a liquid in a vessel when forward momentum is applied to the vessel. Just a thought.

RE: Bobcat-Confused why CG in forums is 3
At 10.25 the tank is essentially on the CG, balance it empty. You don't need a regulator, I don't know of any Bobcat 50 that has needed a regulator.

RE: THE SPEED POLICE HAVE ARRIVED!!!!!
I think it all comes down to common sense. Is 200 mph fast enough to get your need for speed?, you bet it is. Will limiting speed to 200 mph increase safety?, you bet it does. Does setting limitations on speed show regulators modelers have restraint and respect and therefore are more likely to be trusted to self regulate in most regards? you bet it does. As stated this is not a new rule. Essentially we have two choices, be a part of the process and have some say in what regulations and what they do or choose to fight authority and get told what the regulations will be without input. Common sense dictates the path, this is only my opinion and it's worth approximately what you paid for it.

RE: Nitro models pusher Bobcat?
I another thread in extreme speed prop planes essentially the same question was asked about the prop for the TH .75. As I posted there the best performance I have had was with the 12x6 zinger. But they break easy. I have put in an email request to APC to please make some 12x6 and 13x6 pusher props for these types of applications maybe if others joined in they would. Another suggestion was the graupner 11x8 which I may give a shot. Here is what I sent APC:
Hi, Please consider making some 12x6 and 13x6 pusher props for engines such as the Tower Hobbies .75. The only option I have found in this category is the zinger 12x6 pusher which gives great results but is too fragile. There are many pusher models that are popular these days and many modelers are using Tower and Os .75 engines. The prop of choice has been the APC 11x7 because of availability but it does not load the engine enough. PS This thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4588799/anchors_4588799/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#4588799 Applies to one of the planes I referred to and is a huge thread with a great deal of interest (147 pages long). RE: Pusher Prop for TH .75
Of all the props I have tried the 12x6 zinger pusher makes the most thrust and gave the highest top end. The downside is they succumb to pebbles or landing bounces very easily, so much so that I use an 11x7 apc. I would love to try an apc 12x6 pusher if there was such a thing. I just sent APC an email asking them to consider making a 12x6, 13x6 for engines like this, there are many popular airframes these days flying .75 engines which could benefit from these. We shall see.

RE: Spektrum 9100 RX question
Good comments all. I'm running NiMH batteries so the lipo or regulator issues I won't need to worry about. I know there are users leaving the batteries plugged in to the receiver and charging them that way with the system off. I was not looking for an endorsement of this per say but hoped that someone from spektrum support could at least say it is not known or is not likely to cause a problem. Besides those damn EC3 plugs are a pain to disconnect. lol[:D]

RE: Spektrum 9100 RX question
Actually I was planning on not using any switches between the receiver and the batteries, mainly because that is just one more piece of hardware to fail and the system off current draw is less than most batteries self discharge rate. For extended periods I would disconnect the batteries.

RE: Zenoah G-62 spark plug and ignition
OK that makes more sense, I read the document three times and the instructions did not make sense with what I was looking at. This is the passage that threw me off is below. I could not figure out where a set screw would be installed. The installation was super easy. I'm guessing from the lack of response my concern about the new spark plug being longer is a non issue. Thanks for the help. TIMING Now for the fun part. If you are installing a C.H. Electronics ignition system with the CTC and are satisfied with the way your engine currently runs at full throttle, you will just need to lock your timing plate at the full throttle position. The easiest way to lock the timing plate is to drill (#36 drill) into the side of the plate and tap for a 6/32 set screw. It is better to pull off the prop hub and timing plate to do this, but you don't have to. Just drill straight in until the drill bit touches the aluminum timing plate bushing. Now run in a bottoming tap in until it stops. Be careful and do not strip the threads. Now you tighten the set screw and material at the bottom of the hole will lock the timing plate. If you would want to go back to the throttle coupled system you will have to remove the timing plate and clean things up as the timing plate will probably bind up even when you loosen the screw. You can use a bolt in place of a set screw. If you do not have a tap you can drill a hole and use a sheet metal screw. Just screw it in and lock the plate.

Zenoah G-62 spark plug and ignition
I setting up a G-62 and I ordered 2 plugs from Horizon (RCJ7Y) which is the recommended plug. This plug I pulled out of the engine is a RCJ-6. This is a G-62 from the 90's and was set up by another person. The original plug is much shorter than the new one and though I suspect there will be no problem I would appreciate any clarification you can offer. I'm also converting this engine to a CH ignition which is for the most part already finished. The installation guide talks about installing a set screw in the timing plate. If someone could post a picture of what this is supposed to look like I would greatly appreciate it.

RE: New SPEKTRUM 9100 RX with dual batteries
I'm setting up a 9100 in a giant Telemaster with dual NiMH receiver batteries. I don't like the idea of two additional switches for the batteries as that means two more possible failure points. The draw from the receiver is less than most batteries self discharge rates so for short periods of time I don't think a person would need to disconnect the batteries. I can't see any reason why you can't charge the receiver batteries using the servo type charge lead while the batteries are plugged into the receiver control unit via the EC3 connectors and the system is off. The batteries are isolated by the unit itself so there should be no problem quick charging the batteries at the field while still plugged into the receiver control unit. What do you guys think?

RE: Plan for model like Great Planes Patriot XL
I think there is a constant low level demand for these planes. My interpretation is the patriot is a good all around plane that is also easy to squeeze some speed out of. I think that nich will always be there.

RE: Plan for model like Great Planes Patriot XL
I don't have one to offer, but I do think it would be good to have an "open source" planform similar to the patriot we could all enjoy. If we could gather together the right information like airfoil etc. (all the particulars) it is easy enough to design aircraft in google sketch up. I'm in to do whatever I can to pitch in if there are enough interested. I know we have the collective know how to do it. If so I'll propose something that will accommodate .60-.90 engines.

RE: Giant Telemaster setup questions
Thanks, I have checked the struts over and there no evidence of any cracks or fractures. The gentleman who built this plane use thick aluminum stock for the ends and they were hand made. The wings are attached via two aluminum spar/tube arrangements for each wing. This airplane appears to have been beefed up in several areas, the elevators are joined, the ailerons are operated by bell crank and the landing gear was beefed up. The airplane was built for insect research and did not see much use because they did not have a pilot with good eyes. I have read numerous threads here and on RCG on the GT but the information on equipment (besides engine) is pretty sparse unless I just overlooked it. I believe this was the older GT version and was built around 1996. That being said all the information I pulled from the threads has been extremely helpful and valuable. The wings were stored very well and there appears to be no warping and the airframe seems sound. The glue joints are very well done and I have checked all the hinges and they are still in tight. I still can't get over how huge and ugly this thing is though.

Giant Telemaster setup questions
Hi all, sorry if I'm putting this in the wrong place but it seems liked the best place to ask my questions. I have been asked to get an old Giant Telemaster going and since this will be my first "giant scale" I'm looking for some input on various aspects of the project. I'm converting the original G-62 to a CH ignition doing some minor recovering to repair hangar rash and putting in a completely new fuel and radio system. I was horrified when I opened up the wing to find standard 40 oz servos used in the wing and also for the rudder. The elevator did have a 700BB. I'm planning on installing HS-625 MG servos for the ailerons (1 each) and the rudder. A single HS-755 MG will go on the elevator. I will use a standard servo on the throttle, I may modify the wing and add servos for flaps later. For receiver I'm planning on using a AR9100 DSM2 powersafe with 3 remote receivers and two 2150 6v NiMH receiver packs. So in short I'll be powering 4-6 high torque servos and one standard servo. This airplane will not be used for aerobatic or hard flying. I'm setting this up for a project at work and the utmost priority is safety so if some of my selections seem like overkill there is a good reason why. I have been flying RC for about 7 years and fly everything from small electrics to .60-90 size aerobats and propjets, so I know enough to know that I don't know everything and this being my first "giant" size airplane, and first gasser, I'm open to advice from fellow flyers with the right experience. Thanks in advance.
