RE: My Phase 3 Squall 4S w/ Vector
I'm finishing up mine at the moment... PLANNED for my Squall is the stock 'Hi Power' setup (4S / 3 blade fan) and TV. (but after putting a don's wicked 4000plus into my Stinger 64, I'm definitely looking at putting one of Don's motors in the Squall as well...) My stinger went from a nice, calm, gentle Stock EDF (the kind you'd bring home to Mom) to a rip-roaring FAST, Party girl type... fast, and sleek... a completely different animal entirely (and I DO mean ANIMAL :)) ...

WOW... I realize this is an older thread, but I just had to ask if anyone is still flying the ol' troublemaker. Tony Bonetti was a regular member of my club at the time (RCRC in NY) he, Dennis Donohue (Flying the El Tigre) and my Father (Pat Buzzeo) were ALWAYS trying to out do each other... I can distinctly remember the three of them argu .. ummm... 'discussing' the swept wings, chin bubble (for the retract nose gear) Split elevators/hidden elevator linkages etc... I was 8 or 9 at the time but i remember it like it was yesterday ;) I know Tony is still alive and in Las Vegas... my Dad is 92, still fiesty and still flies EVERYDAY it's not raining... I'm probably talking to myself in this year old thread, but around Father's day I tend to get a bit nostalgic. thank you to ALL here for the stroll down memory lane.

RE: Tail Tube for 90mm ducted fan
it should be able to be flown without it. the thrust tube is something typically used to gain better performance from the EDF unit, but in some cases (typically for bigger / more complicated jets) it can be used to keep things (like elevator servo leads) from causing turbulence in the exhaust. TYPICALLY, (for an EDF) the thrust tube is optional. what airplane we talking about?

I've got the HK Stinger 64 (in red) .. two of them actually ;) I went with a single wheel (it's actually a modified servo output wheel) mounted in the forward skid.... (sort of like a single wheel sailplane) 2200 MAH 3 cell (30C) and I get 6-7 minute flights with throttle management, 2.5 mins WOT. not blinding speed, but faster than most ~60 sized pattern airplanes. absolutely the best $89 I've spent on this hobby in 40 years.

Gyro Gain Causes my reciever to lock up
Hey Danny.... I must be missing something simple here... I have an 8013 TX (the later model with digital trims) and a 7 CH JR receiver. The Gyro is a 'knockoff' brand piezo with remote gain and heading hold. The gyro and tail servo work great as long as I don't plug the gyro gain into the reciever. (aux2) when I do that, the red light on the gyro comes on and nothing else happens. no servos, no beeping, no nuthin' except that red light on the gyro. Unplug the remote gain wire from aux2, reset the reciever power and the whole shebang works perfectly. (except of course that I can't turn heading hold on or off from the TX [8|] ) I have 3 of these gyros and they all do the same thing... (art-tech is the gyro manufacturer... the helicopter is the falcon 3d.) any idea what the heck I'm doing wrong?? Thanks in advance.

RE: Falcon 3D
I got my Falcon 3D almost 8 months ago, before Hobby Lobby started carrying them. It's really a great little heli, but my biggest gripe with it has been the TX/RX that it comes with... the servos would center in a different place every time I'd turn it on. also the trims were not proportional.... Cheap-O Pot's, I'd imagine. I Replaced the TX and RX with my trusty JR equipment and it flies like a dream now. the Gyro, servo's and everything else was first rate... after roughly 250 flights, everything still works just great.

YS 91AC Sluggish throttle response
I have a YS 91AC which sat brand new in the box for 9 years. (it's a LONG story )[8|] I've recently dusted it off and have it in an edge 540. (I have other YS 4strokes... love em all!) I'm having 2 minor problems with it right now, it's got BTW roughly 1 gallon of fuel burned through it so far (20%) the throttle response is a bit sluggish from low to high, and it does not come up to full power with the nose pointed straight up. If I keep the throttle at low to mid for 30 secs-1 minute (this is all while flying, not ground running.) then go to full power it takes as much as 8 seconds for the engine to come up to speed. if I enter a hover from 1/4 throttle, once the nose is pointed up I can bring the throttle up as high as I want, but the engine doesn't get anywhere near full power (it's more like half throttle). I have replaced every O-ring, and the regulator diaphragm, (no crud anywhere) Valve clearance is per the factory, check valve installed correctly and operating normally, regulator screw is flush, no bubbles noticable, Tank pressure is OK, OS type F plug (new, replaced it just to rule that out) Needle valves set properly, no notiable leaks, APC 16X4 Wide prop...... I'm running out of things to check :) Oh yes, this is also the second fuel tank... Have I missed something glaring?? it's been awhile since I broke in a new YS but I don't remember any symptoms like this. Dave, any input would be most appreciated. Jim B.

yep, the short version is that the wing's angle of attack is what makes a "flat plate" wing fly.... it's been causing a stir in the aerodynamic world for a couple years now that they're figuring out that bernoulli's principle doen't seem to have as much effect as perviously thought.

I've got to say it, Brushless is not as expensive as you may think. I'm also a recent "convert" and if you can handle a bit of DIY, you CAN get into brushless for as little as $70ish. can you say re-built brushless CDRom? http://homepages.enterprise.net/jayjay/cdrom_motors.htm I'm having so much fun with 'em, I ALMOST spend as much time building them as I do flying.

IF you're the "homebrew" type, don't overlook Home Made\Converted Cdrom brushless motors. for $10 plus the price of a brushless controller like a pheonix 10, (~$60) you can have a setup that will practically hover your G-moth. http://homepages.enterprise.net/jayjay/cdrom_motors.htm is a good place to start.

I agree with Matt, that unless you're a VERY experienced builder, I would not recommend that mod. (ditto if you're not an experienced FLYER [:D]) there are however several full scale production airplanes that use counter-rotating props... the Beech Dutchess, the Russian "Bear" and the Cessna 337 for example. I was looking for info on a home made brushless controller also, a home made controller is WAY more complex/complicated than a home made motor, at the end of the day, it's more costly than the $50 you'd spend on something like a castle creations pheonix 10 or 25. here's a link to the only DIY brushless Controller that I've been able to find. http://jaichi.virtualave.net/electr-e.htm http://www.radetzki.info/html/sbl_micro_e.html hope that helps

RE: A-10 50 to 55
GWS does offer a retro-kit, incuding new fans and nacells. I had built a stock A-10/EDF 50, and after the first (sort of) flight, I went to E-bay and got a pair of the 55 motors/fans (for $15) and retrofitted them into the existing nacells myself. with 2S Lipo, performance is still marginal, (ail/elev/NO Rudd servo) but at least it flies. I've been flying it on 3S Lipo, and NOW it flies like an A-10. Although, I know the motors will only last 15 flights or so, perhaps brushless motors are in it's future. [>:]

RE: A wing loading question
the wing loading is literally how many Ounces (or pounds) each sqaure inch (or suqare foor) of the wing must lift to make the airplane fly. (a 100 Sq in wing on a 10 oz airplane... 100 Sq inches must lift 10 ounces... 1 Sq Inch must lift .1 ounce.... .1 Oz per Sq In.) so if you've got 2 different sizes of the same airplane, say a .40 and a .90, if the .90 has twice the wing area and weighs twice as much as the .40 version, the wing loading on both airplanes will be the SAME, but the bigger airplane is going to fly better because of reynolds effect. (bigger airplanes fly better than little ones do.)

RE: Hovering Problems
I agree with Chris B.... Check the LATERAL balance... I'd wager the Left wing is heavier... and that will cause all kinds of headaches... another real killer is having the control surface gaps uneven. if the airplane does not track well through loops, balance laterally, and seal the hinge gaps (if not already sealed.) Hope that helps! (BTW, the term "Coupling" is when you command one flight control, and the result includes a second <uncommanded> control input) when in knife edge flight, (with lots of rudder) it's common for the airplane to need elevator input to keep it flying straight.... the cause of that elevator input requirement is Rudder\Elevator coupling.

Newbie Please Help Almost There???
Hey, Guys... I'm taking up Golf. is it a requirement to have a $2000 set of carbon fiber titanium clubs (with ring-laser Gyro stabilization), NASA designed Super Duper golf balls, Dinosaur Skin Shoes, with genuine Rattlesnake teeth spikes, Unborn Goat Fetus gloves, and tees mined from the shoemaker-levy9 comet? Or can I just get a $100 set of sticks and go out to the public course? Get a basic, 6 channel futaba radio, get good, experienced local help, and go flying. the radio should come with 4 servos, a charger, reciever, and battery pack. you can use the servos in most any airplane, and you still have many options for your next projects. you'll also need flightline accessories, such as fuel, starting battery, etc, but you won't need those until the airplane is built. you'll need glue, covering and some basic tools to finish the airplane, get help at your local hoby shop, or on-line store, and get whatever equipment will best fit YOUR Budget. Welcome!

the only thing I see in the manual that deals with this is the batteries not being fully charged.... I don't want to offend, as I don't know your level of proficiency, but you are aware, for example, that the motor is either ON or OFF, and that it's only ON when you have the throttle stick held fully forward. if it's still giving you trouble, I'd suggest contacting HobbyPeople. Ummm... I think some more info is needed, I have to assume we're talking electric powered park flyer of some sort.... My G-62 powered stinger takes off space-shuttle style with no wind.... :rainfro: if you're also having problems with the electric motor cutting out, that sounds to me the reason you're having climb trouble, I'd assume your speed controller uses a Battery eliminator circuit, (BEC) which shuts the motor down when the batt's are nearly depleted, and most have an emergency feature that turns the motor back on, after having the throttle at idle for a second or 2. if i've made all the correct assumptions, either you are not charging the batteries fully, or there's something wrong with your speed controller or the BEC is set improperly. any chance of a little more info?
