RE: OS LA 46 conversion
Mr Cox I do see your point. on the glow site guys go thru ball bearings like M and N candy with diesel as you know we just do not have the corrosion issues . Good quality plain bush engines go for a long time PAW as only one example. Good fit from the start and high quality bronze mean a lot. Some of the cheap imports may lack both. going back in time one US maker that comes to mind is K and B. I bought a used Kand B 20 from with a davis head from Davis how old? how many run hours?? Easy starter , quiet, excellent running engine my OS10FP and my OS10LAs and TT10s with DDD diesel heads are the mainstay of my electric to diesel park flyer conversions martin

RE: OS LA 46 conversion
Mr Cox I think you may have overlooked my point, I do have as you know Irvines also the OS 32AX and OS 46AX engines with DDD heads but pricy My point was the OS46LA a plain bearing engine is a great strong conversion for less $$ and a great quality lower cost engine it is well made durable, and just a little weak in the power department on glow but really is a powerhouse on diesel My Irvines of course as many glow conversions run at full power at about 75% throttle open this is typical of most glow to diesel conversions and is pointed out in the Davis instructions with his heads. my OS LA 10s are an other example of a lower cost engine that as shines as a DDD conversion The results speak for themselves ( John Pavlicks review Dec 08 fly RC) and the Hobbico trainer flights compared to the Apache martin

OS LA 46 conversion
Hi gang. about 2 weeks ago I mentioned that Bob Davis came down for a visit to socialize and do some flying. He brought down is Hobbico trainer 62" span with his OS46LA diesel conversion. We went to Cleremont (Fl) to my bother in-laws who live on 5 acres, He has a flat pasture that was closely mowed enough to fly off.I brought my VMAR apache ll with with the Irvine 53 DDD conversion. The apache started life about 10 years ago with an Irvine 40 diesel and was a sedate flyer. I re-engined it with the Irvine 53 conversion nad it became a whole new animal The Hobbico with the OSLA46 was a real surprise. It did as well as the Apache with the Irvine 53 conversion, both planes are around the same weight 5lbs+ Remember the OS 40LA is a wimpy plain bearing engine , well made, reliable but wimpy with its smaller carb, OS punched it out to 46, we now have the the OS46LA, better but still no powerhouse, with its smaller carb not a great breather on glow. The diesel conversion is a whole new animal, turns a 12x6 at around 10K, verticals, no slow down , great strong loops inside and outside, inverted no problems. Being an Irvine freak this opened my eyes when a plain bearing 46 equaled the umph of my Irvine 53 conversion the exhaust was hose down the side of the landing gear to keep the plane clean John Pavlick did a review on the OS 46 LA conversion for pattern in the Dec 08 Fly RC magazine. After seeing what it could do in a trainer again a whole new ball game By the way the engine OSLA 46 engine and head are on ***bay for about $140.Had I seen this engine earlier I may have bought fewer Irvines nad more OSs martin

just checked my shelf of spare engines and there was a JEN 37 ringed with the standard muffler I did a short run a couple of years ago on 5% nitro fuel and it is a smooth runner nice response no bad habits do not remember the props or RPMs I believe they had a diesel head available for it at the time and matt pinnock thought it would be a good combo will check with JE and see if they have the diesel head still available martin I have a couple of the JEN 56s with diesel heads could not be better the Jen line are excellent engines forgot have the 91 too good value for the money

JIM kero or diesel or gasoline will not keep a glow plug lit as soon as power is removed from the plug it will go out a catalytic action between methanol is need to keep it glowing keeping it on all the time course might work but do not think you would have a good running engine throttle response etc martin

Irvine 53 (UK) davis diesel head Irvine 40 diesel (UK) 2nd reasons??? simple top notch quality no issues think I have 5 of each This is a tough call depends on use (size of aircraft) In my return to RC after many years my first was the Irvine 40 diesel at least 10 years ago and they are still going , then looking for variety of sizes I bought many glow engines from 10 thr 61 and they became diesel with the installation of davis heads in the smaller size the MVVS 15D wins as a factory issue martin most of you guys have been flying the classics for years I was absent from the hobby during that time frame

RE: How will the engines survive in future?
my one flying electric is slow stick,( upgraded to brushless) can fly it in the street in front of my house, have a couple of small brushless motors controllers lipos still in the box my assorted small planes ( electic conversions) have either OS or TT10s with davis diesel heads these are my PARK flyers as stated before quieter than some electrics fuel flip and go, and a PAW 06 the rest 15 to 60 diesel or 4 strk glow martin I am not anti-Electric is has has profound positive effect on our hobby it gets many people flying who never would some will explore and use IC engines as they gain expierence when you get into the big stuff in electric you will invest more per power unit than IC An other thought the engine makers such as OS, TT, Saito, to name a few are popping new engines every few months even in todays economy I do not think they would invest in new engines unless they thought there was a market

With the massive impact of electrics many ready to go in the box complete with radio (shake the box 3 times charge the battery and fly). This aspect maybe should be considered recreation not a hobby many of these folks go to the park, maybe play a little ball, run, and fly they are not hobbyists < they do not read Hobby mags or go on this site but are having fun At the other end large scale has grown by leaps and bounds and this is big bucks I for one love the selection of electric ARFS since I buy just the plane and in go my 06s thru ,10s for IC either glow or diesel martin

JMP Blackfoot very nice design and well made It is obvious that several sizes these could be made to use any 09, 10 0r 15 size engine and by simply bolting the unit to the planes fire wall you now have a very strong mount easy to interchange martin

RE: Is there any new engines being made?
As Stated in the parts list they do list a different number for the piston, liner these are steel and iron not ABC , and of course the diesel head head and contra everything else is the same block, rod, crank, carb, very intresting they also show parts for a rear rotary induction system pictured next to the regular rear cover it also shows the glow head has button glow insert they made the most out of the basic engine martin Jack on mine (diesel version) it is a steel l liner and iron piston and iron contra vs ABC in glow Also like its bigger brothers you can rotate the cylinder/liner assembly for right left or rear exhaust before running in

The enya 11,15,25 and MVVS15 can be classified as conversions (factory of course) I have the Enya 11,25, and MVVS 15 these are modern design high quality engines. the one issue is availablity MVVS at least for now out of production still a few left from the sellers in Europe , Enya no USA supplier you get from overseas UK or down under With Davis conversion heads from .10 and up and the base engines available OS , TT, ST, to name a few you have a modern diesel engine I really do not see any issue For the Classic folks PAW and its clones available With Davis out there I really do not see any issues with modern diesel engine availabilty martin

ROCKETBOB..It is a scaled down version of the big tele >It is designed for electric being the slab side construction I just added an other firewall to the first of 1/8 ply and used a plastic beam mount forget the brand Dubrow, sullivan?? and used 4 cap screws with blind nuts 4/40 the 9x4 zinger I think turns in the mid 9K range. I have yet to fly it my wifes son did for a project with some small tele-metering equipment GPS, altimeter etc and I assume a means of sending data to the ground. It did its thing according to plan and will get it back it of course in its orginal state minus the telemetering stuff. It was a very easy conversion . chopped out the battery holder and just made a new one to hold the tank and added a micro servo attached to the inside of the fus side to run the throttle martin Mrcox note the RPM
