RE: Sig Kadet Seniorita electric conversion questions newbie....
Yes it is a bit of sticker shock. Its like looking at all the stuff required to fly glow. Fuel, flight box with all the goodies in it etc etc. Here is a system at the other end of the price range. The only other stuff needed would be the charger and batteries. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBRN4&P=0 Adam
ORIGINAL: sportser75 where can i go to get the plane and the rest of the stuff that i need[sm=confused.gif]
Here are a couple of ideas from someone who recently got int the 3d foam planes. If I was to do it again I would either get a plane from Fancy foam http://www.fancyfoam.com/ Just about everything you need for $329.00 brushless or $259.00 with a brushed motor. I havent flown one of their models but that is a good deal for a complete setup. Lots of models to choose from. Or another place is http://www.m-a-e.com/ SLick or Slick extreme; for $200.00 complete this little plane is incredible. If you are planning on a smaller flying area or small indoor place you would not be dissapointed. I do have one of the Slicks and they will perform.[8D] I actually enjoy flying it in some wind better than my larger planes. Adam

Conversion Mufflers
Hi Brian; The gentleman who designed the first ones has them in a Lanier Staudacer, BME 105 powered. He has been flying IMAC with his setup most of the summer. There is a pic of his instalation in my gallery. So far they have been holding up very well, Only flying time will tell. The sound level on my 46cc Poulan is in the mid to high 80db range with a 200 to 500 rpm drop from an open header. I keep playing around modifying things. I regret to say I have yet to get a flying combo together for the Poulan :( due to to many other projects going on this summer so I have had to rely on other guys flying for any muffler testing. Adam

Seeking True Diesel Engine
The Davis Diesel stuff doesnt run on regular diesel fuel. They are a "compression ignition" engine and run on a special mix. Ive seen some small 3 to 4 HP diesels but I dont know if anyone has made anything under 1 hp. If you want something small and efficient look at one of the newer 4 stroke gas weedeater engines. They will run on straight gasoline with no mixing and at the power you need would be very efficient. Im a Diesel believer and drive a diesel car but I dont know if anything that small is out there. The Davis Diesel stuff is nice but the fuel is supposed to be a bit of a pain to deal with. Adam

I need 16+ lbs thrust, which engine?
Check a couple of the threads on Poulans. Some guys are buying just the motor from Lawnstation without all the "saw" stuff. You dont have to cut the extra shaft off, some do and some dont. If you do cut it off with the crank still in the saw, just dont get it so hot it melts the seal :stupid: Adam

Do a search on Poulan 46 . If you run the magneto you can get a strong motor at a very low price. Even if you added the C&H ignition its still a bargain. Adam

Ryobi question
Originally posted by rob10000 I've flown this combo a few more times with the 18x6W APC "fun fly" prop. I get 7750 RPMs, and I still haven't messed with the timing yet! Recorded thrust with a cheap digital fish scale was around 14 lbs. I am hoping to try a 20x6 prop this weekend and tweak this thing some more...
Now what will it run with the Cylinder that has the slits in it?? Adam

Ryobi question
Well I checked some of my Ryobi's and assorted clones. I have one 2 ringed Ryobi with slits. One single ring Ryan without slits. Also one of the Ryobi/Ryan motors that Cvan mentioned from a Stihl weedeater; 1 ring no slits. Like Herb mentioned, It would be interesting to see how a 2 ringed piston would run in a cylinder with no slits. I know a guy that has a lot of older Ryan weedeaters I may have to go visit him. Adam

Poulan 46 prop sizes/brands?
Those two sizes are good ones. It depends so much on the plane and how a person likes to fly. Anything that will load the motor down in the 6500 to 7500 rpm range is good. Which brand ?? Zinger; Bambula; Master Airscrew; lots of others. Adam

Comments on Engine/Muffler Installation
Hi Joe; Hows everything going?? I dont think it will burst into flames :stupid: but like anything new and un-tested you will want to keep a close eye on it for sure. At least for a while untill you feel that everything is OK. I would start with some ground runs with the fuse all closed up. (You will probably be doing some anyway checking out everything on the new plane) Then pull the top hatch off and see how "warm" the inside of the tunnel feels (The side inside the fuse) At the VERY worst you would probably get some indicators, smell, something before anything like flames would happen. Also you cant see it in the pic but the exit hole in the bottom of the fuse is really quite large; I think a lot of air will get pulled out of there. Adam

Well in this forum a lot of guys only have conversions. If you are comfortable with doing the conversion why not?? The conversion on the Poulan is pretty straight forward and once you get to that point you are in the same situation as any other gasser. Adam

Is 80" wingspan big enough for Big Bird?
They had to draw the line somewhere I guess. For the IMAA 1/4 scale will also get you in the door but there are some 1/4 scale models out there that will fly with a 40 glow. The same with some 80" sport models and larger, say a Dynaflight Monarch I belive is 96 " span, basicly a powered glider with wheels. Would it be "legal" sure, but someone would certainly feel out of place at an IMAA fly in with one. Adam

Alum. tubing
Dave is right; McMaster Carr is the best all around place. You can get smaller pieces without a minimum. Most of the stuff at the home improvement places is pretty poor quality. The tough part of the headers is making the flange and some of the thinner tubing takes a quality bender to get good results. .035 tubing works but the .049 is a little easer to bend and tig weld. If you need any tips give me a shout. Ive tried a lot of stuff and I may be able to save you a few headaces. Adam

Getting back into Aerial Photography
Years ago when I was messing with the 35mm I had problems with the blurr. I ended up just flying up to altitude and shutting the motor down and then gliding circuits, snapping pics on the way down. On the Telemaster with the 4 stroke I was really expecting the same. I have the camera wedged in there, not to tight, using the white Hobbico foam that they sell for padding your fuel tank, reciever and everything else. I was pleasently supprised with the results but Ill have to get a better camera sooner or later. 640 X 480 wont cut it for long ;) Adam

Getting back into Aerial Photography
Hello everyone; Ive gotten back into taking some pics after quite a few years. The plane is a scratch built Telemaster 40 with a OS70 for power. The camera is a inexpensive Polaroid PDC640 mounted inside the plane. Its been hazy here tha last few days but I tried it anyway. The digital is definitly better that the 35mm I used in the past. Ill have to look into some of the video setups. Here is a pic, there are more in my gallery. Adam

Tig Welders??
Try this link http://www.aceintl.com First the comment about an inverter being cleaner and splatter free than a machine with a transformer is a joke. When Tig welding there is no smoke or splatter, none-zero. Now about the inverter welders; dont WASTE your money. The inverter welders that I looked at in the $1000 dollar range had several limitations. 1) No High Frequency start 2) Did not come with the remote amp control 3) No AC so welding aluminum is not possible 4) Did not come with the regulator/flow meter Now you can get a more expensive inverter that has AC and buy the other things that are not included but you will end up with at least as much money as a ready to go package from any of the other big brands. I wish the inverter type welders were as good and less expensive as the more standard machines available today but from the reasearch ive done and my experience is that they are not. Adam

Need Telemaster 40 control throws
Hi Randy; I agree, Ive seen guys do a lot of wild stuff with a Telamaster. :stupid: Ill have to play with the differential. I think Ive got about twice as much up as down to start with. Im actually building it to try out some float flying for the first time ;) but Ill get it sorted out dry first. Ive flown a lot of different stuff over the years and its been a while since Ive done the setup on a high winged/flat bottom trainer. Its got an OS 70 in it and hopefully if the weather straightens out Ill get a chance to try in the next few days. I did recently get my hands on a set of plans for the Giant 144" Telemaster. That should be nice!!! Adam
