Airplane Sun Shield
Good Morning all: I'm trying to find any information about an airplane sun shield for use at the field to keep wrinkling down to a minimum. They one I had seen about a year ago was made of a stretchy cloth material that was shiny on one side and had an elastic band around the outer edge. You stretch it over each wingtip, vertical stab and then hook it to the front of your cowl. I saw a picture of one in the latest Model Aviation Mag pn pg.170 but there was no information about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

RE: Performance Aircraft Unlimited 30% Extra 330l SALE!!!
Maiden Flight Report: Today was the day that I was able to break away from work, grab the Extra and get her to the field amidst some 10-15 mph winds. They were right down the pipe and you couldn't have asked for a better test flight day. Engine tuning took about 2 minutes to get it dialed in with the trottle settings. Smoke system primed and checked good-a shrug of the shoulders and it was off to the runway. Ground handling was solid with high rates on and rudder for days. Got her centered up-took one last deep breath and started to push on the left stick. I was suprised when she took off after about a 30 ft roll out and only 1/3 throttle (had to be the wind) but she climbed straight out and needed only 2 clicks of up and zero aileron. I went through the standard maidern pattern of simple upwind and downwind passes checking for attitude pitch sensitivity (seems a tad pitchy just like Plane-R's was. Low rates on the elev produced an shar pitch change as it was and with the high rates moving to 47 degrees- it wanted to flip around the canopy hard so those will be adjusted. Snap roll test on low rates were very controlled and at a decent rate. I did 2 with high rates on and the plane tumbled the full 360 in a span of about 5-6 feet (read: violent) Landings were like flying a giant ugly stick including the dead stick that Bass1 mentioned. After 13 minutes of solid air time and in an inverted flat spin, she just starved out. I was able to make it back to the runway right at the approach end but it still entered ground effect and floated another 30 feet before finidhing in a great 3-pointer. She needs some control throw dampning but the overall report is a huge success and the plane is a thing of beauty. I really wish I would've gotten a second kit to toss in the attic as this one is a keeper. Will try for some inflight pix this weekend. PAU did a great job on this one!

RE: Performance Aircraft Unlimited 30% Extra 330l SALE!!!
Weather is not cooperating to flying. Winds are between 25-40 with gusts plus yesterday's rain makes taking off from the field necessary to install floats rather than wheels. However: I did fire it up and did some engine tweaking. With the DA-50 and a TBM 22X8, I got 6800 out of it. Still need to get a check of the smoke system and then just wait for the weather to cooperate.

RE: Performance Aircraft Unlimited 30% Extra 330l SALE!!!
After a month of building (been gone for a while) I am happy to announce that the build is complete. I'm very happy with the way things went together overall but had a couple of issues that seem to be normal for lots of us: * Wing tube and pockets extremely tight. Had to sand them out and used the baby powder trick. * Had 2 control horns strip out. Replaced them with a Sullivan set. * Upgraded the pull-pull kit with a 4-40 kit from Du-Bro. * Sticking with the stock gear for now just to see how good it really is compared to a CF set. Outside of that, I added the smoke system in the canister tunnel and closed up the access end to keep the engin heat out, went with the Pete's Model CF spinner which may be replaced with a Tru-Turn for the added weight as I am still barely balancing with all 3 battery packs (2@2300 Mha and 1@1650 Mha) in the nose all the way against the firewall. The canopy hatch turned out well thanks to the recommended white tape trick earlier in the original build thread. The Graphics set came from Bad Brad Graphics and turned out awesome. Should be ble to get the initial grounds in this week followed by the maiden this weekend. Thanks to everyone who provided inputs and tips on both threads. It defintiely helped get my project on a better build than just me alone.

There is a ton more room in there as you can see from the pix, and I could go with something like a 12-14 oz. I went with the Pete's Model 3.5 Extra style as well, just waiting for the delivery from Chief. Herve sent me clarification that the CG is measured from the LE of the wing at the fuse-great service from PAU!

Anyone put smoke in their plane? I stuffed mine in the canister box and mounted it to the framing overhead. Very solid and also very hidden. It's a Sullivan Skywriter controllable pump with an 8 oz. tank set.

I'm looking to use the exact same setup on my kit. Looking at the manual, it says to have 130 oz for ELEV, 100 oz for AIL, and 150 oz (250 oz recommended) for the rudder. Throttle can be a std. servo. What is everyone else finding as a good setup?

RE: DL-50 engine
Frankswd, I was running the Biela's on an OS 1.60FX (glow days) with an 18X8 2-blade and a 16X10 3-blade getting 72-7400 rpm. They pulled faster speeds on the Cap you saw pictured than a BME or JZinger prop. They are hollow fiberglass props so weight isn't going to load the engine like you think when you look at them with the fatter mid-section of the blade. Because of the fatter blade, downline breaking is very 'right now'. Due to cost restructuring now that I am in the 30% land and aren't afraid of gassers anymore, I have switched back to laminated wood props (BME/TBM) for now. Thinking about trying out a Zoar in the white/red combo soon, just to mix things up a little.

If you are looking for a good 3-blade with a little thickness, take a look at Aircraft International.com and go to their props (under products) for the Biela. I ran one on my Cap and it pulled with speed. You can paint right on the top of the current paint scheme without prep work. [link]http://www.aircraftinternational.com[/link]

CShep, Nice work on your instrument panels. Where can I find those and build up my own? I was going to go with the Virtual Cockpit kit but this looks about the same without the $55 cost. They look real sharp, but I think I'll keep the cost down this time around. Thanks,

Has anyone found that they had to reseal the carb mount? I just got mine and the mount looks pretty dry (no sealant/RTV) between the carb body and manifold? Also, for those that have mounted inverted, did you keep the carb in its original setup or rotate it 180 degrees? Thanks,

RE: Performance Aircraft Unlimited 30% Extra 330l SALE!!!
Yarom: I'm going with the Batshare for the twin power setup into an AR7000 rx; no need for a Power Expander like you said. Each ELE and AIL servo will be HiTec 5645's and each in its own dedicated channel, rudder will be the HiTec 5955 , throttle will be a HiTec 425BB, and smoke will fill out the rest. Smartfly cutoff for the ignition system with a total of 3 batteries at 2700 Ma each. Going to try a DL-50 this time around. I have a DA-50R in the Yak and want to see the side by side comparisson. At $375, it was hard to pass it up with ignition, standoffs, muffler, and a can of Lawnboy tossed in. What is everyone propping their -50's with? I have a bunch of 22X8's from BME (love the laminated and painted tip look) Stock gear or swap it with CF? As you can tell, I'm not trying to build super light, but more economical with lots of 'show' to it. Any other suggestions or tricks before I start the project? I've made a few notes from the older build thread. All: Thanks for the comments on the grapics, can't wait to see them in person and I WILL be sending before and after pix.

RE: Performance Aircraft Unlimited 30% Extra 330l SALE!!!
I've been getting caught up on reading the threads after returning from a little time out at sea (no internet) and am also the proud receiver of an Extra as a Christmas present. I had enough time to take the cursory look in the box to see that this was the best packaged ARF I've received, plus the added extras of the CF parts, ballcap, and wing, fuse, and tail feather covers made the cost even more worth the purchase. Hats off to PAU! Now for the really good news: I've been working with Brad at BadBrad Graphics for the past week on a vinyl package for this bird and wanted to share it with those who still have fresh covvering. This will be the 3rd plane I've put his graphics on and know I won't be dissappointed. I'll post pix of the plane once I get them on the surfaces (still in the mail) but here is the final drawing that got produced. To Herve and Ken: Thanks for the great product and support !

RE: New 50cc Yak
Thanks for the info. I got a hold of John and he recommended using the 3" standoffs. Looking at your need to add weight to the nose might remove this if I stick the engine out that extra 1/2". I'm going to start very conservatively on the CG as this is my first big gasser. The rudder will have to wait to see how it balances with the servo on the tail. I've had pull-pull in all my other birds and would be a tad more comfy with that setup as well with the weight out of the tail and that far at the end of the fulcrum.

RE: New 50cc Yak
A question for you all: For those running a DA-50, what length are your standoffs and what is the measured distance from the firewall to the back of your spinner? Just bought my YAK from a guy who has a the rudder servo mounted on the tal with a tiller vice the pull-pull set up. Reading through the manual, I cannot fine either the length or distance to get me into the CG range. Until then I can't deide if I want to leave the rudder servo in the back or move it up where it is supposed to go. Thanks everyone!

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
It's not that I'm looking to over power it, just have the 3W75 looking for a home. I've already taken a look at Graph Tech's gear and will be replacing the stock gear with a longer set to avoid the prop clearance issues. The CG setup is more of a concern for me in trying to get a solid balance and hopefully have the ability to drop a smoke system in as well. I'm getting a GEN I used with CF wingtubes, tailwheel and linkage upgrades. Anyone experience any firewall issues? I appreciate all the input and help from everyone [:D]

Has anyone used a 3W75US for a GEN II? I'm doing my Christmas shopping a bit late and am looking at this setup. I figure the hp would compensate for the added weight of the engine up front, or will there be balancing issues??? Great thread and very informative from all who have given their 2 cents. Thanks!

RE: Ultimate bipe balance
I'll have to check on that tomorrow when I get it all together at the field. When I built mine way back when, I didn't bother to check the wings during the build-up but only the horizontal stabs. I've recovered the wings 2 months ago as well as added CF gear to lighten the load and get a bit more clearance for the prop. She is a great flyer after almost 4 seasons. [:D]

RE: Ultimate bipe balance
Got your answer for you: "The balance range for the Ultimate is 1 1/2" to 1/2" from the leading edge (front) of the read cabane - without fuel" That is published right out of the book. I built mine with an OS 1.60 and Tru-Turn Ultimate spinner and started the CG right at the 1/2" measurement point for starters. I found it to be a bit nose heavy and couldn't get the plane to float in during landings but had to trim with up elev. to maintain a flat attitude. Moving the CG back to the LE of the aft cabane has helped with all aspects of flying my plane, including those landings that cushion themselved in ground effect.
