RE: New Hanger 9 P-47 30cc and electric friendly
I can't speak to the new D Bubble Top, I have the older razorack, To move the CG forward on my E-Flight 160 Electric bird I cut out a big hole through the firewall so that when I glued on my home made motor box, I could move the batteries foreward and though the firewall. I have done this with other planes and though more work, I don't need to add any weight and the plywood is pretty cheap. Cheers

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
There is an alternative to the ESM Gear but it is more expensive, or it can be. The reason I say it can be is that with the ESM gear I had two ground loops, and not that bad as the speed was way down. However I fly off of a paved runway out here in the desert and on both occasions I bent one or two of the ESM gear legs. Replacements were about 45 a piece. Finally I said enough and bought a set from Giant Sierra. I had already converted the ESM to electric with LADO 666 actuators and installed them into the Sierra Gear, this was about a 30 minute job. They have been fantastic and after 50 plus flights and one good loop, a half loop and one really bad landing I have not seen and problems or damage. Plus the gear has less play and the plane tracks better. That is the good news. The bad is that the Seira's are about 330 or so, and if you want electric gear you are going to need LADO or Wingspan or down and locked conversions and that will be another 250 or so. Yup its an ouch. If I were to summerize, the Sierra converted to electric would be a about 600 bucks, the net result of that would be a very strong and excellent set of gear and struts, my LADO's have been great and completely reliable (I have 3 sets). The ESM gear are a lot cheaper, my experience has been that they are not as strong as the Seirra gear, and the ESM gear has more play in the mechanisms. The plus side they are half the price. My thinking, for what its worth, is that by the time you get this plane flying you have sunk a pretty sizable amount of cash into it, why risk it with cut price gear? Lastly I am not slamming ESM or touting that this is only way to go, ie not attempting to start a flame war or that one thing is better than another, with RC and with life alternatives are present. Happy flying. Cheers

RE: Wingspan Electric retracts
Sorry for the seriously late reply For the 8 flights I used about 500 mah out of a 3 cell lipo, that was for the gear, and all other servo's. My experience has been that the electric retracts don't place a significant burden on the electrics or the batteries. Naturally all mileages with vary :-) Cheers

RE: Lado retract voltage
I have been using the 666 for a couple years, on two planes, they have been used on Seirra, Robarts and ESM retracts all without any problems and all on 6 volts. I was told by Gus at Magnum some time ago that the earlier ie pre E-tract actualtors that were on my 333 rotating retracts should be kept at no more than 5 volts. He went on to say that the newer ones were OK over 5 volts, mine are the older 333 My suggestion would be to send Cristophe from E-tract a note just to be sure. This is what is posted on the E-retract Website regarding the specs on the 666 SPECIFICATION MIN TYPICAL MAX UNITS Voltage 4.00 4.8 to 6.0 6.70 Volts Current Draw 0.05 0.3 .7 Amps Staggered Lift Delay 0 - 2.5 Seconds Weight Per Retract - 3.1 - Ounces Retract Speed 4 cell* - 10* - Seconds/inch Retract Speed 5 cell* - 8* - Seconds/ Inch Good Luck Cheers

I have 2 20 pound planes flying on e-Flite 160 motors, and ESM-LA-7 that I run on 12S and the older Hanger 9 Razorback that I run off on 10S Both perform well over scale in climb and speed. RE: P-39 by ESM
JMohn do you have any photo's of how you install those batteries. My Plane just arrived and I would like to get some idea's. Cheers
ORIGINAL: jmohn Paul, The batteries are mounted under the gear right behind the firewall. I just made a battery box and velcro them in place. I flew for 6-7 minutes last weekend and had 35% left on my packs. I am using two 6S 5800 packs and flew modestly the whole flight. I would guess you could fly for 10 minutes or more depending on how hard you fly. I set my timer for 6 minutes to be safe and will bump it to 7-8 now. One thing to change is that you need to make a small indentation on the brace below where the nose gear installs. The hose barb above that hit the wood and broke right off on a landing that was pretty good. I think it just flexed a little and broke it off. I just cut in about 1/4 inch to prevent that from happening again. Jeff
RE: ESM LA-7 CG help?
Hi I have 50 plus flights on mine now and I have the CG at 150 ish could be 153 or so. The ground handling at this is good and it tracks like its on rails, elevator is as close to 0 degrees as my eye can tell after trimming it out. I will say this however inverted flight needs a deliberate push forward and slow roll need some forward stick to check the noses desire to head for the ground. As Dash said if you too far foreward with the CG plane flys bad and is sluggish is pitch, to far back plane flies once! :-) I would suggest you try 150 / 155 and see, its easier to move it back than to rebuild it! RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Thanks Ron, I checked out your video, that mustang is really nice.I put my speakers, 2 four inch, in the cowl much like Pete did with his Jug as shown on the Aerosound site, I agree that from a volume perspective the wings are most likely the best speaker location. I know that I can go 12S on the batteries with the Power 160 and have done so on another bird, what I wanted to do with this one was keep the prop noise down hence the 10S and relatively short propeller. I must say that the 2400 Watts is really more than enough to fly the plane scale the only thing you need to think about is mass management or perhaps better called momentum management. With the flaps all the way down this thing slows down fast and moving from a decelerating plane to one that is accelerating is not instant with my setup, so I need to keep that in mind. On the first flights I did a fair bit of stall training and unless you really horse the T-Bolt around the stalls are a none event, if you are high enough :-) I do have one question for the people out there reading this thread has anyone thought about wing bags for this plane or the new one. I have not installed the guns and pitot tube yet and am thinking that this plane deserves some nice wing bags!Cheers

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Thanks Louie, I was thinking of doing the same but I bought the Chin "Splitter" and 8 inch 9 cylinder engine from Aerotech instead. They arrived over the weekend courtesy of the USPS. Looks like they will fit and I will be working on getting them into the cowl over the next week or so. I have an ESM Ki-84 Frank that has had the wing cutomized and is now glassed sanded and primed in the paint shop, I would like to get that one done then tackle the P-47's cowl. I must admit I was surprised of the weight of mine I planned on it being in the 17 pound range, the first flight was with a 16X12 prop and 1800 or so Watts - It flew like a T-Bolt acceleration was only fast when it was pointed down! :-) The 18X12 gives me 2400 Watts or so and good flight times/Performance. If the new 30cc bird fly's like its older stablemate its going to be a winner for sure. Please let us know how the new front fits in the old cowl. The Aerotech enging and splitter look great, initial trials tell me I have some cutting in my future but it looks like its going to work and should look very nice. Cheers

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
I hope you guys don't mind if I post something here that is not the new 30 CC Hanger 9 P-47. I was lucky enough to find one of the older Razor Backs late last year and have finally managed to put it in the Air. Its E-Flite 160 powered on a 10S battery config with a Castle Ice 80HV controller propeller is a Xoar 18X12 and with 6000 MAH batteries I get 8 minute flights with plenty of reserves (an 8 minute flight typically needs a 3500 mah charge. I can also stuff 2 of the newer 8000 mah 5 cell Nano tech batteries and fly longer. The plane is also equipped with a Benedini Sound system, all up wieght is 19 pounds 15 ounces. Link to Video - Many thanks to John Laird of the AMPS in Phoenix for taking, editing and posting the video http://www.movingmoment.net/Rick2.wmv Hope you like it! Cheers

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Well the Seirra gear were installed and elctrified, the Lado 666 actuators dropped in easily and the gear and struts dropped into the plane just as easy. I flew it 4 times on Sunday i had 4 nice takeoffs, the gear was aligned the same way I did the ESM gear and the tracking on takeoff with the ESM was ok, I must say though I seemed to need fewer and smaller corrections with the Seirra gear in the plane. On the landing side of the equation, I had 4 good touch downs and 3 good rollouts, the 3 rd flight I did get a bit of ground loop, previously this bent the ESM strut at the oleo section, such that it would stick or no longer move up and down on the springs. After it stopped, nervously I taxied the plane back and noticed it looked like nothing had happened :-) I also tested the retracts on the bench no issues, nothing moved, so I loaded up another couple of fuel cells (6 S 5800 mah 25C cells) and took off again, landing was good, roll out was straight Nice!! So far I like these Serria's!!! I have much more confidence in he gear and their ability to handle my planes 19 and half pounds of weight. Cheers

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I just treated myself to a set of Giant Sierra gear for mine. Last night I removed the Lado 666 actuators from my ESM gear and looked at the conversion effort, it looks to be a drop in fit with very minor modification needed. I will have them finished and in on Thursday night, at least that is my schedule. In case you were wondering why the switch, I found there to be to much play in the ESM struts. I fly off pavement and any movement away from the straight and true in the wheels can lead to an unpleasant ground loop. I had a couple of these and each time the ESM strut got bent at the bottom, this then pevented the oleo's/springs from working so trying something different. Cheers

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I finally got some pictures taken from the field, no video yet, in fact after these pictures taken I goofed and put the plane on its back. The rudder was badly damaged and I had to pretty much build a new one. Its on now and hopefully the plane will be flying again this weekend. No video yet, I was going to be getting one but that was after I dumped it on its back :-( The last picture is of one of the Club members rather large twin engine, twin wing planes.

RE: Spektrum A7000 retract servo
I have a pair that I installed in the gear for my Hanger 9 P-47 150. I am using 6 volts I was able to adjust the endpoints and slow the servos with the Radio. They have enough torque to operate the gear with and without the struts and wheels installed. I have not flown the plane, but all my tests have been successful so far. So about all I can say is so far so good. Cheers
ORIGINAL: Warwix The new Spektrum A7000 retract servo claims to offer programable endpoints as well as the capability to slow the servo down using the Tx to mimic scale retract operation. I have been hoping to find some kind of review on forums but I have not had any luck. Is there anyone out there with any experience with this servo?
RE: Wingspan Electric retracts
I use a 3 cell 2350 or 2500 mah Lipo and a Castle BEC set to 5.5 or 6.0 volts to drive the electrics on 2 of mine, One uses an HV BEC off of the 12S 6000mah flight batteries. The most flights I have put on in one day was 8 and the 2500 mah battery was at 12 volts at the end of the day, less than half used. Cheers

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hi and Season's greetings. Regarding the COG this is my second ESM machine, the first is the Ki-84, based on experience from the Frank and from posts regaring other ESM machines I decided that I would move mine up. In this thread there are comments about using 160mm, seeing as I prefer slightly nose heavy and by lttle more than luck iwth the battery position, I could move the COG up without adding any weights sooooooo; keeping the mantra that fly nose heavy fly bad, tail heavy fly once in mind I thought I would give 150 a try. When I taxi tested the plane the COG would have been well ahead of 150 and it displayed pretty good ground manners with no noticible desire to nose over I was willing to risk it. With this setup my elevator aligns well with horizontal stab. however inverted flight takes a lot of forward push on the stick (about and heavy third or more) split S's are real easy :-)!!! Also with this set up I have no mixes with the flaps and very little pitch change going from partial to full flap. It goes where its pointed with no desire to move around, slow rolls can be done but with forward stick when inverted. Pitch is easily controllable and not "twitchy". Yah the way that the cockpit turned out and with the pilot and opening cockpit should be there!! Maybe next time!! I was thrilled to see that you got yours repaired congrats on that!! Cheers
ORIGINAL: Kiwi Bandit Great news about your maiden flight. Glad it went all ok. Where abouts did you get your info from regarding your C.O.G at 150mm? By the way - mine is the radial powered unit you saw tip stall. OUCH. The memory is still painful. I would recommend winding in a small amount of reflex on the ailerons. This will make the angle of attack slightly less at the tips and "Hopefully" prevent a repeat of the dreaded tip stall. When I flew mine recently - the cog was at 155mm. It was a little twitchy on the elevator at this setting. It made the landing a bit bouncy. I have since moved it to 150mm and are just waiting to fly it again when the weather is better. It should track better with a little more weight on the nose. Great job on the pilot figure. He looks right at home. I would like to find a suitable pilot for mine as I have the same cockpit kit from Ty. A sliding canopy would be a must have for such a great setup. Very tidy setup in the fuse. I moved my tail servos to the aft end to balance the big engine. I see you have twin cables off your rudder servo. Did you run a direct line for the tail wheel? Look forward to seeing a few pics from the field. Trev.
RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Joe I would suggest that you get the cockpit in before you do any work with the servos or the pull pull install. You will alse want to look at cutting the cross brace containing the guides for the pull pull wires out. I did this by cutting though them close to the former. Also when you put in the radio tray, cut out the whole per Ty's instructions then plase the radio tray in and mark the out line of the fuse on the bottom of the tray's styrene. When I did mine I trimmed the tray by going a quarter inch from the dip in the tray and it did not line up with the fuse when I test fitted it. Easy fix but had I marked it as I just described it would have saved some additional plastic work. Happy Building and good Luck, Cheers, Rick

Boris (gave him a name) came to me courtesy of Mark Morley at Scale Aircrew Supplies in the UK. When I went looking for a pilot I was not having much if any luck finding anything one of my searches had me finding Scale Aircrew Supplies, I sent an email to Mark asking me if he could put a pilot circa summer 44 together for me. A couple of weeks later I got an email with some pictures and seeing that it was very close to my birthday I treated myself. Mark's work is indeen excellent, I really should have installed an opening canopy to show him off better. Thanks, Cheers

RE: Wingspan Electric retracts
I have a couple of ESM Planes and I just maidened my LA-7, it came in at 19 and half pounds with a full pilot and cockpit installed. I have the ESM gear for both , the LA-7 and the Ki-84 Frank, both planes have been converted with the Lado actuators. I bought mine from Gus at Magnum RC and he handled the conversion for me. Going this route put my gear in the 350 to 400 dollar range (Please do not tell my wife) :-) and they work fine. There is some slop in the ESM units however the 666 actuators haul the 4 inch rubber wheels with 11mm struts up and down perfectly and the struts on the LA-7 are long! I also have a 120 size Blackhorse T-28 and installed a set of the Eflite units, I have to agree that the eflites can't handle heavy wheels or gear legs, I am using the stock main legs from BH and a 3/8 inch Robostrut on the nosewheel. My T-28 has nose gear doors and the eflights can barerly pull up the strut and pull the doors close. So far these have also worked fine and the T-28 has over an hundred flights on it. I have heard nothing put good things about the Wingspan units and am patiently waiting to tryout the electric tailwheel on my LA-7. Hope this might help. Cheers

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I just got back from the field after the maiden flight of my LA-7 I have no pictures from the field but have a couple from the build Mine is electric and powered by an E-Flite 160 running on 12S turning a 16X10 Xoar Prop. This gives me per the Logs on my HV ICE 120 V2 (post recall) ESC about 2200 watts in the air and 2500 watts static. The plane weighed in a 19 and a half pounds fully fueled with two Turnigy 5800 25 C 5800mah packs. I was more than a little surprised to see that I had to move my batteries back from their fully forward position moving them an inch back put the cog at 150 mm from the leading edge as taken as close as possible to the Fuselage. For the gear I have the ESM retracts converted to electric with the Lado Conversion RS 666 units coutesy of Magnum RC. Anyway after doing some taxi tests with my wingman close by in case of major trim issues we took off, no problems and just a couple of minor trim adjustments had the plane going straight level and hands off. Real nice! We did some slow flight work with the gear and flaps down and discovered that the stall is something to stay away from, some say tip stall!! Regardless the right wing dropped quickly, and the plane wanter to go into a spin. I believe there is a video of a radial equipped LA-7 augering in, that demonstates the stall characteristics. I am very glad to see that plane repaired (sad to watch the crash). Any way I am thrilled with the plane and its handling I put on 3 flights today and all the landings and takeoffs were pretty smooth. I should be able to post some more Pictures after some weathering has been applied.

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
I have one of these that I have just started, I fly electric and would be very interested in any ideas involving the creation of a battery hatch. I have an Eflite P-160 and have batteries for a 10S or 12S config, I also have a Castle ICE 120 HV controller. With my other planes, ESM Frank and H9 HellCat I opted to remove the wing to get at the batteries. As I have converted my ESM gear to electric actuators wing removal is not that much of a hardship, but a hatch is much more convienient. Anyway good luck and again any advice would be appreciated.
