RE: Top-Flite Spitfire build
Update Tonight I started building the fuselage. It was a nice change from building tail-feathers! I opted to not start the wing, because I did not yet order the hobby-king retracts, and I want to have them physically here, so if I need to re-engineer anything, I can during the building process. Anyways, fuselage construction went very smooth, as far as I am concerned. A couple questions, if anyone who has built one of these can remember. Did anyone encounter the plywood formers not fitting exactly as they should? I had to sand some of the notches on the plywood formers to fit into the main stringer, quite significantly. Also, due to that, the plywood on the ends would extend much past the stringer, so I rounded them off to match up with the stringer. I don't know if this is going to bite me in the end, but we will soon find out! Anyways here are some pictures.. Any input is appreciated, thanks!

RE: Top-Flite Spitfire build
Here is another update! I began actually gluing some fin/rudder parts together tonight. I have the fin basically 100% done, and the rudder is probably 95% done. I have to just make a couple final adjustments to both the stabilizer/elevators and the fin/rudder and I will begin the ever so elegant process of wing construction. To keep cost down, I intend to use these retracts of which I found at hobby king. It seems like a hell of a value at 60 dollars, and I think even if they don't "drop" right in, a little re-engineering is worth it to save so much money on retracts. Here is a link for the retracts if anyone wants to check them out, and maybe provide some feedback on problems I may encounter. [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__18242__3_Way_Air_Retract_Landing_gear_System_Trike_Large_.html]Retracts I intend on using[/link] Also, I know the set is for a trike, but obviously I am only using the mains... Anyways here is some pictures of what I did tonight. Thanks again for looking everyone!

RE: Top-Flite Spitfire build
Just a quick update. No pics, but I began work on the fin tonight. I cut the ribs out, and got the leading edge mid piece cut out as well. I began laying out the parts on the plans. Did not glue anything tonight, but will finalize and double check everything, start gluing pieces together, and probably finish the fin tommorrow, and potentially begin rudder construction. Pics to follow!

RE: Top-Flite Spitfire build
Buzzard and saramos, thanks for the heads up on keeping the control throws as per recommendation in the instructions. It certainly would be disheartening to have the first flight be an unsuccessful one. At any rate, sorry I have not been posting as much as I should be, I have not really had much time to get in the shop. I did spend a few hours in there tonight and get the stabilizer and elevators pretty much complete. The only thing I have left is beveling the leading edge of the elevators, and also installing the joiner wire for the elevators. I wanted to ask you all, what was the method that was finally settled on for joining the two elevator halves? I know I read a few different idea's in different members threads about different ways to do this to either add a more scale look and or add a more structurally sound setup. I am purely interested in making it more structurally sound, so any input would be greatly appreciated. Here is a couple pictures of the stab with the elevators taped on temporarily. And the other picture is what I have done on the fin, which is merely the sheeting skin hahaha. Again thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it.

RE: Top-Flite Spitfire build
Flyer, yeah I don't have much experience with these top-flite kits but it does seem they like to use sheeting, and often! [:)] . Wayne, I know right it does seem that everyone is suddenly interested in bi-planes, which is cool too I guess! I'm kind of new to this whole warbird thing myself, to be honest with you. I am planning on using an older, but fairly new condition OS 90 fourstroke, hopefully this has enough power to fly it nicely. Saramos, I honestly have very little experience with electric airplanes at this point and time, and I am really trying to keep the cost down so I think I am going to use the old 90 fourstroke I spoke of previously. Update for today, I began work on the elevators, it appeared easy as I read the directions and looked at the plans, but as I got into it, things got a little complicated. I think I may just be overthinking some things, like the taper from the midline of the stab to the tips, and things like that, and what exactly kind of wedge they want me to sand into it. But I am working through it, here is a couple photo's to show where I am at. Thanks again for the replies I appreciate it! Keep em' coming!

RE: Top-Flite Spitfire build
Flyer, The balsa isn't warped too bad, but it wasn't perfect either. For making sheeting skins what I do is cut the two edges that I want to glue together with a straightedge, tape them together so I see no gap between the edges, and then fold them onto eachother. Then I put wood glue in the seem, fold back, and place on the flat table, and then I take wax paper and cover atleast the glued seemm, then I take quite a heavy piece of like 3/16 or 1/4 inch glass that I have, and put that on the sheeting while it is gluing. I add the weights to assure the piece lays perfectly flat while the entire piece dries. It's probably overkill I just don't want to re-do it hahaha. Thanks saramos for the suggestion I was planning on doing a little of that. I can't remember the formula but something like 1 ounce in the tail = 4 ounces in the nose, so every bit does help. I actually studied your build thread, and tubig's quite extensively before I begain building this one. No progress today I hope to build the elevators and potentially the fin tommorrow, I work slow but I will be sure to get more pics up as soon as something gets done! Thanks for all of the input!

Top-Flite Spitfire build
Hello all, I just began work on a Top-Flite spitfire kit that has been laying around for a couple years. I figured I would post some pictures of the progress as the project unfolds. I know there have been a few of these builds in this forum, just thought I'd be social :-). Anyway, here is what I've done so far. I built the stabilizer in the last couple nights, I took several people's advice from this forum and hollowed out the Stab-Core, because rumor has it these airplanes come out tail-heavy. Feel free to post suggestions or advice, I certainly need it!

Don Smith Plans
Hello All! A buddy and I are planning on doing a team project building a Don Smith B-24. First step it to order the plans I suppose and size the project up. I was just wondering where people suggest I order the plans from. It appears when I do a search for where to get the plans from, it brings up precision cut kits and like kitcutters. When I researched these businesses here on RCU it seems people have had quite a bit of trouble in dealing with these folks. I don't know if this is still the case. So if anyone knows where is a good reliable place to order these much needed plans it would be a great help! Also, if someone could point me in the direction of a good kit cutter that is trustworthy, that would be great as well. Thanks in advance! -

RE: Phoenix Models Sukhoi??
I had one last year with an O.S. .46 FX 2 stroke. I set it up exactly as the instructions said and never had any problems in terms of anything structural or anything like that. It flew great. With the .46 it did not have unlimited vertical, and it was by no means a 3d plane with the .46. Another note worth taking is, minimal control surface deflection will go a long way with this plane, i tend to set my planes up with quite a bit of deflection, but with the phoenix sukhoi, it almost had a negative impact, and when the surfaces (*primarily the elevator*) would reach a point, it would almost stall the entire plane, slow it down real bad, leading into a tip stall. Me and a friend of mine built them and set them up exactly the same to do a routine at our annual air-show where we fly very close to eachother, and sometimes towards eachother, in a knife-edge(looks cool as hell) :D, and if we hit, it would only make it that much more spectacular. I would definitely reccommend this airplane to anyone, its reasonably priced, easy to assemble, and will fly your face off all weekend long. There is'nt anything you can't throw at that airplane.

RE: let's hear your funny-stupid old sayings
A couple I use often - if someone asks me a question i will start by saying - "i'm dumb as a box of hammers and i've screwed up everything i've ever done, but i've learned alot along the way" then i will give my answer. "you can't push a chain" "i'll pay you back when my brother the hunch-back straightens out" and when i'm leaving somewhere instead of saying "see you tommorrow" or "see you soon" i am likely to say "see you sometime next year" and if someone drops something of some-what value, i'll usually say "we didn't need that anyway" and of course, the infamous "thats what she said" works for just about anything.

RE: Idiots
For whatever it's worth. Our club is at a privately owned, publicly used small airport with an active runway, and we are an AMA associated club. There are special rules we have to abide by but so long as everyone follows them there is never an incident, plus we have a really awesome runway, additional to the paved runway are 2 grass runways on either side, so it works out nicely for us. Also, we see some very awesome full scale traffic at the same time, which is another added bonus. So it's not irresponsible to put a R/C field near, or at a full scale airport, just irresponsible people may make it bad for everyone else. At any rate, I agree the plane with the camera headed for the passenger jet, thats just ridiculous, he deserves whatever punishment he gets.

wow i did not expect such an immense response. thanks very much guys. I will look into all the options and decipher what I think would be the best route to take. I'm going to be using a thundertiger .61 pro with a pitts muffler. I just cannot bring myself to put this plane together minus the retracts, just would'nt look right. Thanks again! ---Steve E---

Rotating Retracts
Hello All. I am going to be putting together the CMP .40-.50 size corsair soon. When I ordered it the option to come with the pre-installed retracts was "out of stock" so I was not able to get the rotating style retracts with the airplane itself. I have been looking for other 40 size mechanical rotating retracts and have not found anything at all. I was wondering if anyone here knows where I could come up with some 40 size mechanical rotating retracts. Thanks guys!

RE: Fuelers and Kill Switches.
Hey! Thanks for the replies guys. I know that any switch can primarily be used for a magneto style ignition engine but was wondering if there are any companies making an "above and beyond" switch haha. The fueling ideas all look wonderful. I was hoping to find out if anyone has been using these screw out style fueler fittings. I saw them at the wram show and have not seen them since, but they are a circular fitting that gets screwed to the exterior of the fuse, and then you can screw the middle out, and there is a nipple accessible to fuel the tank. Thanks again! ---Steve---

Fuelers and Kill Switches.
Hello Everyone! This might be purely a opinion question but i'm looking for everyones input. All of my gasoline powered airplanes have no kill switches installed, and very complicated not easy to use fueling systems. I was wondering if anyone here has a certain kill switch they really like, or a very convenient one. I also am looking for an innovative, easy to use fueler to install on all my gassers so they all fuel the same way, and I don't have to have a mental road-map of the plumbing inside the airplane to try and "imagine" whats happening. Again any input appreciated! Thanks!

Electronic Ignition.
Hello All, I am currently attempting to convert a motor that came out of a high-power leaf blower, the kind that you would where on your back, I think. Its a 49cc, and after ripping it down and what not, I realized that the engine currently spins the wrong way for airplane use. I was thinking that maybe converting it over to electric ignition would allow me to set it up to spin the other way, since then it would'nt really matter which way it was turning. I'm not so sure of this though, and was wondering if anyone here has tried anything like this before. Also, I was wondering what the going electronic ignition is right now, I remember a while back someone was selling them for like 59 or 69 bucks. Thanks much any ino appreciated! ---Steve---

RE: Young RC Pilot's role call!
haha, I'm 19, started when I was 12. I'm not gonna come on here and brag about all this fancy stuff I have, because I really don't have anything very fancy. Im an OK pilot, and am turhtfully into the hobby to do nothing more than have a great time. My Hanger consists of if anyones interested, LOL 84 inch Giles-G202 - Homelite 45 Big Cub Thing - Quadra 35 EAA Bipe - ASP 1.08 Goldberg Ultimate - Saito 150 (*winter restoration project*) Nosen Citabria - Toro 25cc wacker motor World Models Extra - 49CC conversion motor theres a bunch more, but I can't think of it all haha. basically I love the idea of rebuilding airplanes, building them from the ground up is very fun too, I've been involved in some projects where we drew up plans, built the plane, and flew it, its a great time. The Giles im flying now is an example, we took some plans of other models already available, changes some things and did up what we thought was right, it flies wonderfully. Converting motors is also something im very interested in.

Wondering when the tracker 3 will be in stock again? I have noticed that these systems never seem to be in stock. If so, I'll pick one up there.

well hot line models made this kit a really long time ago. the construction is way overbuilt and you could tell the wood was ancient. From what I have read, the hot line models mooney is a stand way off scale version, but I don't care, looks sharp! Yes i'll get some pics soon!

Hey! I am very seriously considering picking up one of those Cermark Javelin II's with the new sale price. I have a bunch of .46's laying around the house, but I don't quite know that that'll be enough for those really nice long uplines.
