RE: Thoughts and ideas regarding gyro on ailerons
Hi Planecrazy232 Our "good" overrun is about 150' to 200' so not too bad but at the end of the 150 there are drainage holes ever 4 feet fun. One of the guys has plates to cover them however he is not always around. Soo not that big but thank you [:D]

RE: Thoughts and ideas regarding gyro on ailerons
To cool Dustin, thank you for the build thread on the other site BTW. Dave, one day shopping at Costco in a hot Hawaii day makes you think that way [:D] Hi Harry, I agree with you, however mine is a bit heavy and I fly from a pretty short strip but wide 350 X 80. The last few times I flew it before I put it up for a rebuild it would PIO during landing. I think I may have made the ventral fin too heavy also, as I kept bashing the heck out of it. Anyway Id like to be able to fly it a bit slower on final if possible (I know its a 104) without pio so im trying a gyro. Here is a video of it, you can see the pio at the end. Hi Dustin Loved the F-104, looked great did you use any gyro's in that? Ray Johns said it looked good. I have the small Avonds one, im defiantly putting gyro's when I repaint it.

RE: Thoughts and ideas regarding gyro on ailerons
Essyou35 I was able to use crow without issue on my guardian equipped MB339. After I installed the Guardian I just used the same programming that was there already. (it does use dual aileron inputs) Maidened my Mig-21 with 6oz of extra lead in the tail and after a exciting take off, I just dialed up the Guardian gain and no problems. (have now removed the 6oz oops too aft cg) HoundDog I used to feel like you, but when you realize that using Gyros is actually very scale as many if not all modern jet airliners, and fighters use them. It makes flying more pleasant and fun and that is what I'm after; Along with less damage done on the weekends flying. An additional benefit is you can run a aft CG and in some cases you airplane will perform better. My MB339 SM generation1 weights 51 lbs. at takeoff and flies with a PST1300R, it never used to be able to climb in knife edge. Now with gyros and a aft CG it can. Thank you to Skymasters Li Kai for showing his videos on aft cg and stabilization it works great (use under extreme caution)

RE: Thoughts and ideas regarding gyro on ailerons
Hello I have flow the Eagle tree Guardian in several of my planes, works well. Also trying this gyro. Our club president has already flown it in his JL F-35 3 weeks ago and it worked well http://www.bluelight-tech.com/productsGyros.htm I have a SM F-18C that I will try it in in a few weeks, the great thing about the BL-3GRC (ICE-MAN) it is has 2 pitch, 2 roll, and 2 yaw inputs and outputs. You can buy it on Amazon.

RE: If you crash...
I say No From a purely business point of view do you really think that a business model selling these planes at these prices would support this sort of policy? From the stand point of mfg.'s making these ARF planes, If they had to replace your turbine if you crash due a airframe defect, I strongly believe we would all be scratch building very soon. I don't think that many of these models are built every year, nothing close to motorcycles, quads, or other recreational types of vehicles, I really don't think it would be worth staying in business if this is what was expected of them. Maybe if the Mfg's could sponsor or create a standard (stab pivot location, spar strength, material usage) to achieve with their models, we as consumers could have more confidence that it will be safe. I'm really sorry for those who have recently lost equipment due to defective airframes, it does suck. I just want to try to bring some economic reality to the conversation.

RE: F-5/F-20 Skymaster x Feibao x Jetleng
Hi MJunior I have flown 3 F-5's from Skymaster and I own the Skymaster F-20. Here is a video of my F-20 from 2008 I still have it and fly it. The other F-5's got sold and one crashed due to a stripped servo. I have flown both the Boomerang and the Skymaster F-5. Our field is about 350' x 85' and with a 15 mph head wind I can get the F-20 in and out of there without going into the overrun most of the time. Field is at sea level + 3ft. The F-5 and F-20 fly about the same, the F-20's single pipe make for a bit better acceleration. Boomerang vs F-5 1. Takeoff F-5 sometimes tend to stick a little due to the gear being a bit back from the cg so you have to get them going pretty fast to unstick. You can lengthen the nose gear to a point, but if too nose high you may get some bad hopping tendency's 2. Flight F-5 is a very low drag aircraft, and will carry much more energy than the boomerang and will take longer to slow down. 3. Slow flight F-5 will fly in slow flight high alpha quite well but will be at the edge of departing from controlled flight and ailerons will be very ineffective at the lower speed. However it will hang in there at very slow speeds if balanced properly. 4. Aerobatics the F-5 mostly likes big loops smooth maneuvers, its a very long aircraft and if jerked around too much it will tend to oscillate around a bit. The long fuselage tends to accentuate any sudden movements. 5. Split-S NOT at low altitude until you know the plane, when you point the nose of the F-5 downhill it will accelerate like you cannot believe, fun if you know how much altitude a split-S will take, not so fun if your watching someone else pull a split S from 250 Ft and pull out 6 inches above the ground 3 feet from you. I pulled my hamstring that day trying to run for cover.... the plane made it and landed fine fun fun fun : ) 6. Landing is where the F-5 requires the correct technique. If you get one I would suggest putting in the speed brakes, they help a lot. On a proper approach (my video landing sucks by the way not one of my better approaches I got lucky) you get pretty slow and it is easy to get into base leg with no aileron control and you will need to add power and go around. It takes some discipline to land the F-5 on a short runway it does not tolerate bad technique too well. a. Initial gear down speed brakes out flaps 1 b. downwind flaps 2 25% slow down to approach speed (I put flaps 2 here as there is too much to do to put flaps on final) c. base set up positive angle of attack while throttling up to keep speed up as drag increases (this is the hard part for me) d. Final keep the nose up and balance the power so you can maintain a slight decent. e. If it looks bad at all throttle up and go around, its very easy to put the gear through the wings. Hope this helps

WW2 fans we nee help Save Historic Ford Island Runway
Hi Warbird Aviators I copied this from the petition site to try and stop the Navy from covering ford island with a solar farm. There are lots of flat spaces on the Island of Oahu that the navy owns that are less historic and more remote why arent they using those??? Ford Island is the only Aviation Battlefield in America. This was ground zero on December 7, 1941 when Imperial Japanese Navy forces attacked without warning, an act that brought America into World War II. The Ford Island Runway and the iconic red & white Control Tower, as seen in the movie Pearl Harbor, survived that date which lives in infamy, and were designated as National Historic Landmarks in 1964. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Ford Island one of 11 "Most Endangered Historic Places" in 2001. The US Navy now plans to cover the 300 foot x 4,000 foot runway with 60,000 black photovoltaic panels and surround this historic space with a 7 foot high fence. Please join this campaign: http://www.change.org/petitions/remember-pearl-harbor-save-historic-ford-island-runway?share_id=bghifMiPVg&utm_campaign=mailto_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

RE: Eagle Tree Guardian
Hello Im not usally in this area but saw the Eagle Tree thread so here go's I was one of the Lucky Beta testers and it's a great unit. I have tested it in 2D = wing leveling mode in take off, flying, recovery, and landing. I have tested it in 3D = stabilzaton just keep the plane from getting bounced around too much / being unstable. 3D = Direct rate, like a 3 axis gyro that turns off when you move the sticks for better response 3D = Heading hold, w/direct rate a 3 axid gyro that flys like an arrow as long as your plane can hold that line. For example if you roll right into knife edge it will attempt to hold it to the limits of the servos, setup, and plane. (You can turn auto coordination on and off too) For twins I want to test engine out, but do not have a plane that I can do it with at this time. I did not see anyone else in the beta that tried that sorry. 2D uses bank angle for heading control, if you turn off turn coordination I belieive the Rudder works as a Yaw damper. Then that might work.... test it on something cheap : ) http://www.youtube.com/user/aero1965?feature=results_main Here is my YouTube Channel with some of the test flights with my turbine MB339 and F4D skyray.

RE: Old F-104+Kingtech K140F=A dream come true
Hi Dubd Here is my Avonds F-104 with K-80 in it doing aerobatics. Loops ok nothing too weird. Roll's fairly axial. Has a bit of yaw wobble if your not very smooth, but not a big deal. Inverted a bit of down, however I never flew it too long inverted. Fun to fly a bit challenging to land, but not too hard. I might just have a mental block on me as you will see in my video lol. I'm going to put a Eagle Tree Guardian 3 axis stabilizer so I can land it slower without PIO, and fly it without the tanks .... maybe lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z82WtqRedDk

RE: Running a turbine at full power non stop? Damaging?
Hi Everyone I also have been wondering on how to get a accurate measurement for fuel burn for awhile. Thought of fuel flow meters, calibrated fuel flow etc... all too expensive, complicated or inaccurate. So on the line of the other thinking I came up with this. I put together a 2 tank bench run tank, and used velcro to mount it to a postal scale that can Tare and has Gram measurement. To get fuel flow you first get your turbine up to 100% then press tare and the stopwatch a moment later (to give time for the scale to read zero) The amount of fuel burnt in 1 min will read in negative grams. Then go to www.convert-me.com and there is a conversion for Kerosene grams to volume.

Hey Tony Awesome flying, I have a K-80 in mine. I cannot imagine the rocket ship it is with the K-140. Like taking the J-79 out and putting in a PW F-100 in it lol. I hear you on landing the F-104 mine does the same thing, im putting a 3 axis gyro in mine after I finish overhauling it. I don't want to fix nose gear mounts any more Keep up the good work Tony!!!

RE: New 3 axis stabilization in testing
Hey Barry Thank you sir, I really like this unit it has a lot of features and works well. You gotta see this thing recover from inverted just too funny, hit the switch and its upright and level like now lol it's just too cool. Here are my test results from Sunday. I was able to load up the PC interface for the Guardian and do some additional testing this weekend. Sorry no additional video my friend was out of town that usually videos. It was a typical windy day at the field (Kaneohe Bay) 03 16:57 NE 10 G 22 10.00 Partly Cloudy FEW028 SCT050 79 70 74% NA 82 30.08 1018.0 03 15:57 NE 13 G 20 10.00 Overcast FEW028 OVC055 78 67 69% NA 80 30.08 1018.2 03 14:57 NE 15 G 24 10.00 Partly Cloudy SCT027 SCT046 86 72 63% NA 92 30.09 1018.5 03 13:57 NE 12 G 18 10.00 Fair CLR 82 66 58% NA 84 30.11 1019.0 03 12:57 NE 13 G 21 10.00 Fair CLR 80 64 59% NA 82 30.13 1019.6 03 11:57 NE 13 G 21 10.00 Mostly Cloudy SCT030 SCT038 BKN050 80 64 59% NA 82 30.14 1020.2 Test 1: Ability to change, servo update rate with PC software. Most digital servos update at around 250 Hz, most analog servos about 50 to 70 Hz (Guardian default 50 Hz, the Futaba GY-401 analog setting is 70 Hz). In my F-4D I have Futaba S9156 servos on the elevons, and a JR DS368 servo on rudder (DS386 = 300 Hz update speed). I did not know the Futaba update speed but knew it was at least 250 Hz, so I set the Guardian at 250 Hz. You must be careful when changing this setting you must use the lowest servo refresh rate of all you servos connected to the Guardian. If you had 2 digital servos and 1 analog for instance you would need to set it at 50 Hz, the digitals will work fine at this setting. If you try and run an Analog servo at a higher refresh rate than it can handle it will burn out. Results: Two weeks ago, at 50% master gain the F-4D oscillated in roll, now at 250 Hz I was able to fly at full throttle at that gain without oscillation. Another effect was now my roll control was much more dampened and the overall effectiveness of the gyro was better. I did feel with the increased gyro effectiveness it felt like you had to really push the controls, this is where direct rate would be great. Test 2: 2D mode recovery from unusual attitudes. Method 1: Roll inverted recovery. Ok put Guardian in off position, then rolled the F-4D inverted (1.5 split S high just in case) activated 2D, it very, and I mean very quickly rolled upright and level no overshoot totally impressive, I will get video of this next week. Method 2: Pitch straight up. Guardian off pulled F-4D into vertical climb turned 2D on plane pushed over leveled out non issue. Method 3: Vertical dive. Guardian off pulled F-4D into loop on backside of loop pointing straight down turned 2D on plane pulled up leveled out non issue. Conclusion: Testing went normally, the increased resolution that was available to the digital servos when you turn up the update speed was impressive, settings that resulted in oscillations at 50 Hz were rock solid at 250 Hz. The decreased control authority due to the Guardian working better really made me want to test direct 3D rate but did not have the time to set it up properly so that will have to wait for the upcoming Sunday.

RE: Something that I have to ask
About Jet meets: FlyingTiger I’m glad you got some help, have fun with that Futura! Let me say first I really don’t think that just because you’re busy at a jet meet you should ignore people, however there are some factors to consider, one of the problems at Jet meets is that as a flyer if you’re not focused at getting ready to fly, you don’t fly, or worse forget something and crash. So when I have been to meet’s I try to be helpful and friendly however it’s hard to balance being ready to fly and being available for others. There are those people who will just talk to you forever even after you tell them you’re busy trying to get ready. It’s also hard to tell who is just wants to talk, and who is a genuine beginner who is looking for some advice. I don’t think it’s a really good idea for beginners to go to a big Jet meet expecting to get lots of attention and help, unless they can arrange with someone to meet them early and go over what they need help with. For the smaller meets I don’t think it’s as big of an issue however lots of pilots come a long way and are really focused on flying. I do think it is all our responsibility to help those who want to get into jets, to do it safely. I know at our field we are happy to talk to beginners and help them out, we need to have new jet pilots to keep our segment of the hobby viable for people to make products for.

Hi Dasintex It should be able to, in 2D mode it would stabilize the rudder like a rate gyro. In 3D mode it can be set to do heading hold on all 3 Axis. Do you use the gyro in heading hold or just rate? I have a ESM Raiden J2M3 in the box but haven't gotten to it yet.

Hi Rich I think our club president has one of the Feiyu FY-30A units I'm not sure if he has tried it yet. The power box igyro is pretty sweet nice features 2 aile 2 ele 1 Rudd defiantly the high end. Looks Futaba has a new 3 axis gyro also. Good times, it's great having all these choices now. I like the Guardian It's made by a US company, and price for performance is great $74.99 I bought 3 of them.

Gaspar that is just too funny. Chicken steady cam i'm not sure if Go Pro has a mount for that lol. Wojtek I was looking at the Futaba 3 axis sbus gyro and it does have a custom menu, however from what I read you cannot reduce the swash plate mixing below 30% even in custom. You know more about choppers then me maybe you could see a way to do it. PS your turbine chopper is awesome, great job on that!!!

New 3 axis stabilization in testing
Hello Everyone Got lucky and was able to get on the Beta list to test the Eagle Tree Guardian stabilization unit. It's very compact and has some great features. I really think that this might help some of us save a few bent struts, the unit is very reasonably priced and ill bet it will pay for it self the first time you save a set of struts on a bouncy landing. 2d mode, will level the wings automatically and has a heading hold feature, and can be set for auto coordination. If you were flying a big bomber you could also limit bank angle pretty neat stuff. 3d mode, it acts like a 3 axis rate gyro it has 3 axis gain adjustments on the unit, with a master gain on the radio. 3D also has heading hold modes, and a rate mode that will let you maneuver the plane without feeling like your fighting the gyro correction. It has outputs for, Rudder, Aile, Aile 2 and Elevator. I'm lobbying Eagle tree to add Elevator 2 in a future version. I was able to test in my Global Jet Club F-4D with a Kingtech K-80 installed for power. Here are the videos of the 2 flights, the first one is very short due to a bubble in my filter. The second one is a full 8 min flight, I have tested the Guardian to the point of over gain as you will see in the second flight where it oscillates in roll. The Guardian even has a auto feature that will automatically reduce your gain when this type of movement is detected. The performance of the unit is very impressive, check out my bad landing on the second flight. No more bouncy bouncy lol. The best part is the price is very reasonable check out www.eagletreesystems.com it is very close to release a really cool product. Flight 1 with flameout Flight 2

Thanks Dr. Honda Nope just about released, the whole first batch is sold out already. It's really a small unit but out performs the Futaba 352-GYA that I had in the F-4D, the unit has elevon, and V-tail mixing built in plus some. Well it is 1:18 am here in Hawaii good night all, if anyone asks any questions ill try and answer tonight.

RE: Gyros on ailerons with crow
Hi Gary I would use the GYA-351, as long as your in standard mode and not AVCS changing the center of the servos should not affect the performance of the gyros. We use a dampening mix with high expo on the gyro gain channel to turn off the gyro any time the aileron stick goes of center, so you dont get the feeling it is fighting you. If your doing this mix you will have to turn this off during crow or your Gyro gain will be nill (not needed if your using hardware position to mix ie: aile stick postion in 14 mz) You can get it from Keimod, they are in taiwan.

RE: Gyro on taileron/elevon/delta?
Hi Raf I have the 352 in my GJC F-4D Skyray on the elevons and it made very easy to fly. It’s pretty gusty in Hawaii were we fly so without Gyros some planes things get really bounced around. I also moved the cg back a bit to land slower, so I was experiencing PIO's in pitch on landing the 352 cured that! I originally had the elevon mixing in the radio, then had to undo it when I put in the GYA-352: Aileron in one plug and Elevator in the other and the gyro does the mixing (sry being thorough). Pretty neat unit
