RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
Nick, Glad your liking where your working...flexibility with hours is a major concern when juggling school and work. What are minimum credit hours - 6 or 12? The one thing I remember that I hated was those classes that started a sequence and if you couldn't get in them (full or conflict with another class time) you had to wait a year before they were offered again. We have a guy that's been working as an assistant for 2 years who finished his degree this summer and just passed his accreditation test so he'll be leaving soon to start in his career field - he's actually thinking of relocating to PA...hope he likes snow. [:D] Your aerobatic auto's sound very cool...I think I'll just settle for a controlled auto from up high for now, like Bert in those video's was demonstrating where you take it up high, turn it around, TH, and auto towards you to land. I've been increasing my flight times since I was only using 65% at 4 minutes...trying to get close to 5 w/o going over 80%. Also been working more on my basics (ovals and figure 8's in both directions) and my inverted hovering. It's coming back to me slowly. Mark

RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
Hey guys, It's been awhile since I posted any video's so here's one from the weekend...my second flight. [link=http://vimeo.com/49085369]Video[/link] I found an under-construction subdivision that looks promising for a liitle while...don't know how long before it gets filled with houses so I might as well enjoy it while I can. I got a few more flights also and have to say I'm loving the BeastX. My flips, rolls, and hovering is just so darn stable...I was so used to adding all kinds of little corrections with the flybar that this is really great. This heli feels like it has more power then the original ESP...it'll zoom like a 450 does but is nice when you slow it down for some low slow passes. One experience I took from the 550 was the unintentional auto I had (when the solder joint broke on the BEC)...I have been doing baby auto's on landings, even practiced a bunch over and over with the end of one battery...it was really fun playing around with the collective to see what I can do. Much different then on the sim, actually easier. [:)] And its easier to land then landing under power, kinda just floats down gently. Yes JPEE, We used to use velcro to attach the light sticks to the underside of the wing and fuse so you could at least make out the plane's orientation. It really was fun back then. But what you guys are doing is taking it many steps further...major congrats to you all! I love that your 'little woman' is fine with her man going out in the middle of the night to go flying...I think my wife would look at me a little strange if I told her that! [:D] Nick, I am looking forward to fall weather coming...right now we also have 90's during the day but in the mornings its upper 70's with lots of humidity...almost like its going to rain but no clouds in sight. [8|] Still better to fly in that then in the heat of the afternoon. I know the job will be requiring much of your time but as JPEE said...its not worth sacrificing your school for. Jobs come and go (esp at this stage) but your education is for life. I left the Beastx on sport settings and set the tail to 70% and like it where it is. Don't think I really need to mess with anything...the servo's react with stick input to my liking and the expo feels just fine. These units really are amazing with everything they take away from the pilot so you can concentrate on flying and not constantly correcting. Hi Glenn, You sound like you grew up in the Maryland area when it was just developing...I can't imagine a dirt track for car racing existing anywhere in the jumbled metropolitain network. [:D] Maybe far out in parts of rural Delaware...I did a few years in the AF at Dover back in '92, but anything west of the Bay bridge was all built up from what I remember. Hope things cool down for you too, summer needs to end and take its heat with it. [:)] Mark

RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
Well guys, I put my nerves into a wimp lock box and did my maiden this morning...and no issues at all. A total success! [:D] Sorry no video as I wanted to concentrate on just the heli so I left the camera at home. But now that I have that behind me I can take some video next time out, plus it may be a bit more interesting then just hovering around, which is exactly what i did this morning. [:)] I have to say it was interesting...not touching the cyclic at all on liftoff. And the stability, wow. I have been so used to making all kinds of minor adjustments to keep my old flybar heli's in one place but this was really nice...no constant adjustments needed. The unit performed beautifully. Nick, Sorry to hear your going to be having more work also. There was a thread on HF a few weeks ago about Align's new 800...I think the concenses was to wait until more people had it to see what its capabilities were. JPEE, I can't believe you have an 800 at your field already...wow, talk about being on the cutting edge! [:)] With some of those pictures your could make your own calendar for next year...they are crystal clear and the video is something you see in professional commercials. Very nicely done. Isn't the next step to try out the video goggles your wear so you can see your vehicle flying as if your sitting in the cockpit? FPV or something like that? Your plane is extremely bright...night flying equipment has come a long way since the earlier attempts with miniture rope lighting that you would plug into an empty slot on the receiver to power it or the hillbilly style of taping flourescent glowsticks to the underside of the wings to sort of see the plane...usually would allow one flight and one very bumpy landing or crash. [:D] Just wanted to share the news of my maiden with you all, Mark

Hi guys, Things have gotten crazy at work as they have increased the work load by acquiring another company and then one of our full timers got another job so reduced their hours to part time...so work has really become the grind and we really are trying to do more with less. [8|] I finally finished the setup with the Beastx...what an undertaking that was. I am very nervous to do the maiden (did a run up with the blades removed to check for vibrations and everything checked out - but I was shaking just hearing the headspeed on this thing [:)]), so now just need a day where I'm not too exhausted after work to get her airborne. All of this is so new to me and I followed the video's for setup, I'm sure you know how I'm feeling as you both have FBL birds...I just need to get over my nerves. BTW, the storm last week wasn't all that bad...lots of rain and wind. I did feel for the folks that got flooding in the panhandle area though. Nick, Airplane races? Cars? Or is this with the airshow you flew in? Sounds like you had a great time and the demo's you described sounded very amazing. I think you definitely stepped up your game with a tamden chaos and loop you did with the trex 700 pilot. Wow! [:D] JPEE, That was a great story about the cops coming to your field after seeing your quad lighting up the night sky...great! Did you by chance get a newcomer? Mark

Hi guys, I feel like a newbe again trying to setup my FBL...couldn't get anything to work past the initial setup steps and couldn't figure it out until I read a few pages on HF - Aux2 and Gear/Gyro settings mixed up. Duh! [:)] Now things are moving forward again but of course...Isaac will be postponing any maidens this week. [8|] You guys sound like you've been busy... Nick, congrats on school starting. Hope the math quiz wasn't too bad with no calculator. At least you had a good flying day to end your vacation! JPEE, Night flying is a blast...I used to do some experimenting with my old nitro birds but nothing like you at midnight, just a little after dusk where the plane kinda gets lost when you get below the tree line. I bet those LED rolls make it super bright and easy to see. What fun! Like you I left deans and EC's for something better...for me the powerpoles were my salvation as no soldering is needed. I hope the XT60's work out for you. How did the Nano work in your quad? You are definitely treading uncharted waters with that quad of yours...and doing very well from the fun your having. [:)] Take care guys, Mark

Hello all, Nick...cool on the converted tackle box for carrying all your heli supplies. One club I belonged to we had a nice trek to the flightline...I actually had a mini luggage trolley to carry a tool box and a rope to attach to my plane to tow to the flightline. It was fun when we got caught by a thunderstorm trying to run back to the cars to pack everything up. [:D] Congrats on the good flying day, I hear you guys have been getting some nice weather lately. I remember the local school bookstore was a total ripoff with the price of books, nice that you found an online supplier to save some cash...every little bit helps. Good luck this semester. JPEE, Those are some impressive pictures and statistics of the quad. 12,000 or 1,200...during my skydiving days things looked much smaller at 12,000. [;)] The pictures are very clear though and the scenery is beautiful. I can't get over no servo's, just the motors...that is different. Sorry to hear about the 100 temps, definitely no flying in that weather. I'm sure at dawn its close to if not in the 80's already. Not too much going on down here...right now waiting on my order for the controller to come in so I can finish my EFL. Tomorrow according to USPS tracking. [:)] Mark

Hi JPEE, I want to extend my sympathies to you...being in the field I'm in I unfortunatley know about adult leukemia and what the patients go through. I know your friend has found peace in the end - and I hope you soon find closure too. I'm glad you got your quad and the help to get her airborne. Looks like a bunch of fun in the coming months, just don't wind up on the evening news about little green men in their flying saucer. [:D] Nick, Jury duty...yuk! There was a bit on the news where a whole mess of people who didn't show wound up in court themselves explaining to a judge why they were a no-show. One thing definitely not to mess with. Glad it was relatively short...and over! [:)] Mark

Nick, I know the price of fuel is a major concern. Now with the chargers for electrics available its easy to fly all day with just a few packs...and no nitro cleanup afterwards. [:)] Did you get the chance to try out the new tail blades and pinion? I just ordered my GensAce battery but will have to wait until next payday before I can get the controller...with August here it really has been too stinkin hot to fly, although I did get to take out my flying wing yesterday and fly in an approaching storm. It was fun hovering in the winds in the front yard. [:D] JPEE must be out on his ATV. [:D] Mark

[:D] Nick, If you sell the Velocity won't you only have electrics? Congrats on the sale of the 450. Your funfly sounded like lots of fun...what 'ground move' were you trying that caught your tail blades? Glad not too much damage. JPEE, No tracking on that slow boat from China?! [:D] My 500 build is done...now just need the controller and battery. But have been busy building a toy train table for my little one...he saw one on display at Toy'sRUS and was hooked. I figured I could do better for less than $135 so pulled out my jig saw and went to work. Not completely finished yet but not too bad. [;)] Mark

RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
Hi guys, JPEE, Congrats on the quad purchase! I know you've been eyeing them for awhile...with the 'way points' it sounds like you can just program it to fly at your field and you can just stay home and watch the video. [:D] The electronics sound very advanced in some of the things it can do on its own. I saw that Align video where they were demonstrating some new technology similar to what you were describing...had the heli hovering and the guy put the tx on the ground and walked away. The heli stayed in one position I guess based on the GPS coordinates programmed into it. Interesting direction things are going. With the auto's...that is awesome your doing them higher and higher. I bet you were feeling on top of the world after landing. [:)] Did you check out those smack video's or just decided to do it at the field? Glad that the weather cooled down so you could get some flying in. Glenn, Glad that your power issues are over...have you seriously considered looking at a portable generator? You guys seem to loose electricity for long periods of time. I seem to remember it going out during that bad winter 2 years ago and now this summer...just a suggestion for you to ponder over. I bet Tiger was just as miserable as you...did he just flatten himself out on the kitchen floor? Our cats do that when it gets hot in the house - find some cool flooring (usually the lanoleum in the kitchen) and just spread themselves out on it. Not too much going on around here...took a few days off from the build to work on some other projects. Had to do some maintenace on the lawnmower - the blade was torn up really badly so had to replace it and changed out the oil and plug while I was at it, so now its running very nicely. Surprising the difference a new blade will make in cutting the yard, single passes rather then going over the same spot several times. [:)] Mark

Hi guys, First off - Jeff, welcome back!! Glad to hear from you and hope all is doing well with you. Nice to see your old avatar around again. [:D] Glenn, I never knew you guys had such bad storms that it knocked out electricity...for an entire week in JULY??? Oh my goodness I can't begin to sympathize with you with the heat and no AC. At least it was nice to be at work...[:)] I've noticed down here many of the subdivisions will have all the wires underground and the only place the wires are above ground are on the roadways and such...guess it makes it simpler to find downed wires after a storm and less to repair. I'm glad that week from hell is over for you. Nick, Have you had any chances to wring out your Whiplash with its newly greased OWB? I think you could get a couple tic tocs in between those trees in your backyard with no problems. [:D] Yeah, I'll be happy with fall...just ready for summer to be over. [8|] If I got as much snow as you guys get each year I'd not be looking forward to winter either. [:D] JPEE, Dry heat...wet heat...heck, its still darn hot so who cares about technicalities. [:D] Been working on the build so wanted to share some of my progress...as you said JPEE, this will be gold and your right as it has been an easy build this far. No surprises...pleasantly surprised everything has gone together without a hitch...and no screws got stripped. Maybe Align upgraded their metal. [:)] Mark

Hi guys, Nick, Glad you found the motivation to grease your bearing...sounds like the bearing is a bit of a bear to get to...hope this does the trick for you. Are you serious you did an entire battery with just hovering?? How did you resist the urge to do a little more? [:D] I remember hearing some threads on the 550 forums mentioning problems with the OWB and the solution was to swap the stock one for an aftermarket one...that was why I suggested it but it seems yours is unique and the grease appears to be working. JPEE, Sorry the heat is everywhere...summers can be brutal sometimes. [8|] Going to pass on the V-bar...a bit out of my price range right now. I'll be going with a BeastX. Glad the shims worked on your 450 head...a nice and inexpensive fix. [:)] Going to be working on the 500 tonight. Purchased 2 GenAce's and some more powerpole connectors today (was surprised to find I was out of them [8|])...going to have to wait to buy the BeastX as funds are not there yet. Mark

JPEE, To satisfy those inquiring minds...I got a 500EFL FBL with the DFC head upgrade. [:D] Yep, finally joining the club. [:D] I'm going with the BeastX/Spektrum AR7200BX unit...have heard really great things about it plus I do like the simplicity of having the receiver and fbl controller in one nice package. The 500 size is perfect for the flying areas available to me now...the 550 was just too large to be comfortable. And with summer in full swing it will be nice to stay indoors awhile with the build. PerformancePlusRC is who I ultimately decided on...in the end Kirk at PPRC really gave great customer service whereas Grandrc kinda gave me a generic reply about just using the website. At lot of guys at HF highly recommend Performance and so far I have to agree. UPS is scheduled to stop by on Tuesday...boy I'm anxious as a jitterybug. [:)] Have you had the chance to check out any of the Smack video's yet? Nick, I missed your comment on having to unload trucks in the summer heat...yuk for sure! Hope you get something in the airconditioning for now on. I worked one summer in a rug making factory during my highschool days and the general floor area didn't have any air...just huge fans that would circulate the hot air. What misery - and I don't miss those days at all. [8|] Glenn, Keep cool this 4th of July...do you have off? I have the priveledge of working but it is only dayshift so I get to be home in time to do some grilling and then shooting off some fireworks with the 'lil one! [:)] Plus time and a half will help me to buy my BeastX controller. [:D] Take care guys, Mark

Hey guys, JPEE, I downloaded a couple of those Smack video's earlier this year (Nick pointed me in that direction [;)]) and they are well worth it. The good part is you can keep the vid on your computer forever so you can review as much as needed. And the guys actually make it kinda fun to watch also. Plenty of good info there on auto's too. Nick, Sorry to hear about your OWB...maybe when your ready to fly again the grease suggestion will help to fix the problem. Maybe there is an aftermarket bearing replacement that is better then the stock one for holding up to the power the Whiplash puts out. We finally got the heat that you and Glenn are experiencing. Luckily Debby kept us nice and cool...and wet too! But the weather was nice for a good week. Glenn, Thanks for the dibs on your ESP, but I made my purchase a few days ago...the price given to me was very fair so I jumped on it. Looks like it will be here just before the 4th. [:D] Also at work right now so gotta run but talk to you guys later, Mark

Hey guys, Has anyone been following the SpaceX story? Reason being...They had a successful launch of their Falcon rocket with the Dragon spacecraft at 3:45am May 31 from the Space Coast (yes, I was up to watch it from the house [:D]), it docked with the International Space Station, and returned to Earth by splashing down off the coast of Los Angeles. The US has not seen a capsule launch and recovery since the last Apollo mission in 1972, now just one month ago it appears we will be starting it up again. Nasa and SpaceX have a second launch to the ISS scheduled for August. These are definitely exciting times esp since the shuttle was retired just last summer. RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
JPEE, That is quite a story...for some reason when you mentioned 'deck' I had some crazy idea you were trying to fly inverted over a real deck...you know, a backyard deck. [:D] Some more reading got me straightened out. I remember Glenn having the exact same issue as you just described, not being able to revert back to upright flight after too much inverted wiring. I did the same thing with my mcpx earlier this month...was concentrating so much on my inverted hovering and then flipped her back over and couldn't for the life of me understand why the heli kept slowly backing away from me. By the time I realized what was happening that tiny heli was a tiny speck...got real lucky in getting her back to safety. So can fully understand what you were feeling. Thanks for the suggestions on the ESP...there are a few online stores that will allow you to choose what you want in a kit (Grandrc and PerformancePlusRC) so I am waiting on their reply for a quote on a ELF kit without the 3GX. I considered the option of getting a used ESP but my mind kept going back to my Protos experience and what I had to replace on it so not really wanting to repeat that. Not in a big hurry right now so still looking before I make any decisions. Mark

Wanted to include a picture of today with the neighbors palms just bending over in the winds. On the lighter side, I have been looking at getting a larger bird then my tiny mcpx. Going to stay with Align this time and keep with the 500 size...it really is perfect for my size flying areas. Right now looking at the EFL but not in a hurry to make any decisions. Mark

Hi everyone, JPEE, Are you having a blast with your new 'toy'? [:)] How did Thursday's maiden go? BTW, I never did thank you for all the info you sent me on the cassette to digital conversion...I saved all of it so I can go through it at a later time. Thanks for doing all the research for me! [:D] Nick, Well, I just learned something new in that the reason balancers get warm is b/c they are converting excess electricity to heat in the resistors. Never knew that before so neat. [;)] Congrats on your newest design, so do you send your idea to the company and they make the board for you or is this something you are creating at home? It is very cool looking. Glad Huckfest was a success this year, did they have any 700 (or even 800) class heli's demo'ing? It is kinda crazy to see some of those huge airplanes doing stuff so low to the ground but the heli's do take it in the end. [:D] Did you get a chance to fly there? Glenn, Sorry to hear about you having to let the SDX go, but at least you sold it to someone local so you can still get the chance to see it fly. You still have the 500 to fly at the soccer fields right? Maybe in time a new field will become available that will be closer to you. Not much flying happening around here...the weather has been too hot to enjoy being outside so just taking it easy for now. Just waiting for the next cool front. [:)] Mark

[:D] Congrats on getting a decent return for your Spektrum gear...always nice to feel like you made off well with a sale. Glenn, Hi there to my East Coast neighbor! [:D] Did you guys get anything from Beryl last week? Can't believe we nearly had a Cat 1 before hurricane season officially starts. Needless to say we got together our hurricane supplies now. [;)] I understand completely on the thinning down the fleet...easier to upkeep 1 or 2 heli's rather than 5 or 6 (although I'm sure having 5 or 6 heli's is quite nice [:D]). I'm really sorry to hear of the outcome of the MHA field issue...flying locations are such a rarity and to have such a nice field pulled is truely disappointing. (you could always move to Florida...there are 2 great heli flying clubs in the Orlando area...[:D]) Been flying my plane and maybe one mcpx flight each week...work and home projects have been keeping most of my time. [8|] Hopefully now that June is here things will slow down a bit and I can fly more. Take care guys, Mark

RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
Hi JPEE, I hear ya on the 450...a Vbar would be a high dollar item for that size heli. Plus your 500 and 700 sound like your major flyers. Well, I went to the hobby store yesterday to pick up a pack of rocket engines (my son loves to watch 'his' rocket blast off) and wouldn't you know it...passed by the counter and saw it sitting there looking pretty and all (Had that yearning in the gut sensation), so...yep, got myself another mcpx. Guess my break is over. [:D] Took it out to the local ball park this morning and actually had a really fun time. A bit nervous at first but quickly calmed down and had fun. It was a nice start to the day. [;)] Mark

RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
Hi guys, My foot and shin have healed but its going to take a bit longer to get comfortable flying again. JPEE...I too thought that I had cleared up all the static issues and was safe to fly. We had a cool front come through so the day it happened it was a cool and dry morning, so I think that helped contribute to it. I was about 2 minutes into the flight doing some front flips when I noticed the tail jerk so I took it to a close hover to land when the tail and the cyclic servo's jerked. The heli tilted backwards...almost as if starting a backwards flip with a bit of right tilt thrown in...too low and way to close to me to keep power on...so throttle hold it was. Nick, I really haven't taken my planes up since the accident...plus with the weather getting hotter I just don't have the desire to fly or be outside. I'm glad to hear that your semester is finally over and you have some time to spend on yourself. Sorry for the late congrats on your honor society induction...did you get your picture on the wall? Glenn, How did your Gaui auction go...were you able to sell it? JPEE, Looks like your doing some major flying between the 450, 500, and 700...and in multiple states too. Hope your adjustments to the 700 work well. Do you plan to go FBL on your 450? Take care everyone, Mark

RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
Hi everyone, I had too close a call with the Protos a few weeks ago...I actually did get hit with it but luckily not too bad...a few gashes just above my feet. A static hit caused it to come right at me. Throttle hold and a high jump backwards saved me. Needless to say I no longer have that heli...sold it with a warning about the static issue. In the meantime been taking time to give my foot a rest and staying away from anything with a spinning prop or blade. Just wanted to check in and give you guys an update. Mark

RE: are these blades any good for cp pro?
Hi guys, Finally got a chance to finish my maiden story...the maiden went well. The plane took off in a short time so my power system that I was questioning was more than sufficient. My landing was, well, it will need some work...got used to belly landing. [:D] The second flight was very short...if you know about stick mounted motors you need to secure the gearbox to the stick with a screw. In my haste to get the maiden in I totally forgot about that tiny screw and my second flight was cut short by the motor/gearbox coming off the stick. I was actually amazed at how it floats (even with the motor hanging off the front [:)]) and it landed in the grass so no real damage was done to the plane. I got real lucky as the only thing needed was a new gearbox and motor shaft...and fill in the gash the prop made in the side of the plane. [:)] And can you believe as I was packing up I noticed the throttle hold switch was in the up position...I guess I hit it by instinct the moment I saw the motor come off. [:D] Nick, Sorry you were having a heat wave...we also had temps in the 90's last week but I think we are more used to that then you guys are. Temps seem to be more close to normal now so looking forward to getting some flying in the next few days. Did you fit the Whiplash already with a camera rack for the videoing? JPEE, Eyes on something bigger aye? What do you have in mind...just curious? Glad that you had one of those perfect flying days...the 700 FBL seems to be taking your skills to the next few levels - rainbows and inverted manuevers...congrats. [;)] That 500 sounded like it was made to rip...I would be shaking to fly it too just knowing all that it had. Mark
