RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Hey guys, I'm seriously thinking of getting out of the hobby. If anyone in the DFW area is interested, I have my Piper Pawnee that will be the first to go. Y'all know how great a plane it is. I've got a Saito .72 in it and currently it has a 7 channel Futaba 2.4 GHz radio in it. I bought all this new when I picked up my plane in April-May time frame. I've got about 15 flights on it (I don't fly much as you can tell, thus the reason for getting out). If you don't need the radio, I can take this one out, or trade it for a 6 channel Futaba 2.4 GHz for a little less money. I put a new rudder (sheet balsa) on the plane and put a better tailwheel on it. I also got rid of the flimsy wires on the tail and put solid adjustable rods back there. What a difference! Both in looks and in performance. The plane also has gem 2000 blinking light on top. I know I can post on the RCUNIVERSE site and will do so soon. But I figured I'd throw it at you guys in this forum first since this is Pawnee territory.

I finished the Ziggs Focke Wolf that i have had in my garage for over 10 years. The cowl was the weak point on the original Corsair I had as well. Here is a picture. I've got a OS .25 on it. No problems with weight or performance.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
When I first got my plane, i noticed the right wing had 3 ribs cracked. I called horizon and the guy told me to send in the broken wing and they would send me a new one. Well, shipping was going to cost me as much as it was to buy some covering, and some balsa. So I cut off the covering, made some rib replacements and sandwiched the original ribs in between with some CA. Recovered the wing and I've been flying ever since. I had also emailed them with pictures and told them how unhappy i was. Today a right wing came in the mail. Amazing. 4+ months later. I guess I have a spare now.

I don't believe I would have picked one up for 279. They have other kits for 279 that include retracts, etc. I'm glad I got one when I did. I enjoy flying it.

Ziggs
I've owned several Ziggs originals. The last was a Corsair and it was one of the most fun plane i ever owned. I just found an unopened Focke Wolf in the garage and decided to put it together. I'm almost finished with it. Does anyone have any past pictures of any Ziggs kits? I sure would like to see them. Is anyone still flying any Ziggs? I'd like to hear about that too. Akulakat.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
I've got 3 planes I fly right now. A very old (18 years +) high wing sport model with a OS .46 on it. This plane just screams. It used to be my wifes plane until I confiscated it. Wilma flintstone is the pilot and I painted the plane orange with Black spots all over it (like Freds' outfit). An Oldtimer with a Saito .56 on it that I use as a camera plane (Though the vibrations from the 4 stroke reverberate through the pictures) And My Piper Pawnee with a Saito .72 on it. Y'all know how the Pawnee floats / er flies. The picture is of where I usually fly. Off my driveway. The picture was taken from the Oldtimer, you can see 'Wilma' on the ground near the garage. Today I flew the Piper first. Wonderful flight. Slight wind which makes for nicer landings. Perfect as usual and very enjoyable. The plane landed from left to right on the picture and taxied right to where the Yellow number 1 was in the picture. Nose facing the driveway. I figured that was a good place to park it. Wrong. So I took Wilma up. Like I said, this plane screams! Its' a blast to fly. I'll tumble it all day long, this thing is built like a rock. 18 years and I am just waiting for some control surface to fall off, but everything is still strong. The only problem with Wilma is it comes in HOT HOT HOT. Nothing I can't control it is just alot different than the Pawnee. So I came in today and on landing it took the same route the pawnee did but at a much faster pace. Hit a slight bump somewhere in the grass and gained about 6 inches of altitude when WHAM !!! It took out the Pawnee. Damage was limited to the completely destroyed rudder and bent tailwheel and one of those support wires on the tail assemble. That was it. It went over the elevator and the tailwheel was planted firmly enough in the grass to bend (I could straighten it if I wanted to, but I'm going to get a real tail wheel. I guess I'll have to order the wire. I have enough sheet balsa here, I'm going to make me a solid rudder. I already have white covering. I think I can take the covering off the top of the old tail and maybe heat it enough to stick to the new. If not, it'll be fine as white. So I guess that I learned today that Wilma Flintstone can kick Barbies' A $$.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Three seperate flights today. 2 this morning and one this evening. This plane flies great!. To top it off, a full size pawnee flew right over my property on the way to a job I guess. That was the catalyst for my 3rd flight. I fly in my backyard. Picture of my field is at the bottom of [link=http://akulakat.com/home/Planes/PiperPawnee/PiperPawnee.htm]Akulakats Piper Pawnee[/link]. Once I got airborne and flew around for 10 or so minutes, I could hear him coming back. Low and Slow. I don't think he ever saw my plane, I kept it below the roofline until I knew where he was as he was definitely lower than I had been flying. I tried to catch up, but no go. It did look like they were in formation for about 2 seconds, then mine got too small so I had to return. I wish this plane was yellow instead of white! I still have never seen any other than yellow except on youtube.

Covering Blows. But monokote is much better. I used Paintable Coverite fabric a couple years ago on a biplane and I loved it! It never had a problem like the films do.

It jumps off the ground in no time, definately no rocks attached. Craig. [/quote] Mine seems a bit sluggish with a 13 x 6 prop on it. i don't know which direction to go? 13 x 8, 14 x 6, 14 x 8? RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I picked up two Saitos. A .72 and a .91 GK. I put the .72 in a Hangar 9 Piper Pawnee and ran a couple tanks through with the cowling off. When I put the cowling on, the engine seems to have no power now. None. Which direction do I need to go with the needle valve to offset this? I can't adjust with the cowling on, the engine is on its' right side and the muffler sits right below the needle valve. I also have a 13 x 6 on it. Sound about right? Any help would be appreciated.

Tint away. I think it would look great!. I got mine airborne today. I've got a new Saito .72 and put a 13 x 8 prop on it. I ran it a couple tanks and it seemed like it was doing fine until the tail lifted a bit and I now had a 12 1/2 x 8 prop. (See picture) I traded props with a 13 x 6 that I had laying around. I put the cowl and wings on and went for the maiden flight. It didn't seem like it had as much power with the cowling on, but the engine was running and I went to take off. It didn't even act as if it had half as much power as before. But after about 25 feet with no power, it lifted off gently and had a decent climb rate too. A few passes and the engine just wasn't right. Of course it dead sticked on me. This plane will absolutely float like a balloon. My CG upside down is right at the wing tips right where the front sheeting ends. All servos are in the standard locations. The battery is velcro'd next to the throttle server dead center. I think Barbie just aft of the CG actually balanced everything out perfectly. I was going to get ready to tune the engine some more and had to call it a day. Bummer. I'll work on the engine tomorrow.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Thanks for the encouragement, I think I will take your advice on the ultracote. I need to run by the LHS to pick up an exhaust extension anyway. With the Saito .72, I got the muffler under the cowling by using a 45 degree header. Much better than putting a hole in the cowl. My pilot I cut the seat bottom, glued it to the floor of the seat, then Barbie went right in. Strapped her down with Tie wraps and she is one with the seat. i will glue the seat in probably with epoxy to make sure it holds firm. I think the Gem makes the plane. It is too cool. You have to have the receiver close enough to the gem as when i put an extension on there, there was too much current loss and it stayed a dim red. Plug it direct and it blinks like mad with a full battery. I did glue my cover to the top of the canopy with RC56. When I go to place the unit in, I'm going to use some on the bulb portion as well, then run some scotch tape along the wire to the back of the canopy keeping it out of sight, though Barbie's hair will hide alot.

Pilot. I've seen all your cool pilots. I can't have an empty seat. I went and picked up the Ken doll at Target for $5. While I was there, I grabbed a $5 Barbie as well. Ken won't fit without major Butt sanding. Even then, cutting out some seat, butt grinding, etc, he sits a little high in the saddle for my taste. So I broke out the Barbie in her 2 piece swimsuit, stole Ken's clothes and put on her. 'Tailored them to fit her better using CA. I really like the height that she sits in the plane. I think she'll do just fine as a pilot. Better looking than Ken anyway.
