RE: Need your help, Spektrum Dx6i and Taimya DMD
Hello, I use this gear in my tanks and it is ok. One tip that may help. Check to make sure that your servo leads are plugged in the right way around. The black cable should be facing out and the white cable should be facing inboard. I cannot see from the pics if the cables are correct however it is an easy thing to overlook, I have done it many times. The black outside cable is the negative and should go on the terminal marked with a minus (-). It might also be that the KV1 DMDs have the safety setting on them like the Pershing where the motors will not turn until you have pushed the throttle slider all the way back, then pulled the stick all the way back to get it out of electronic neutral gear. Also set you tank up just like Tamiya say to otherwise you will have trouble with firing your MG and Main Gun. Cheers Alan

Yep it was the 1/16 Kingtiger from FoV. Shame really I was hoping to do a complete conversion like your Sherman and have an all metal King tiger. Cheers Alan

RE: FOV Sherman RC conversion Progress report.
Hallo, I got hold of a FOV King Tiger the other day and while the turret was metal the rest was plastic, the whole hull and hull superstructure were all plastic. What a rip off! I would be interested to find out if the Tiger I is the same. Cheers Alan

RE: Sherman at the YHR shops
I saw Bubbas thread but was not sure what he was working with as his text is brief to say the least, lots of photo and video support though. He mentions use of 1/18th parts which threw me a bit and made me think he was maybe using 21st Century Sherman parts. It is a shame that out of the box the bogies appear not to be sprung, is this the case, do they have any movement at all? Might have wait for the inevitable metal upgrade kit that is sure to come along with metal tracks and so on. Cheers Alan

RE: Sherman at the YHR shops
Hello, Great work you are doing there. Just a quite question. How hard do you think it would be to remove the suspension bogies from the Mato Sherman and fit them on a Tamiya Sherman? I am busting to fit some on my Tamiya Sherman Firefly conversion I did ages ago so that it is finally correct. Cheers Alan.

I do not know which company it was but the Big Boss was German and the only model on display was the fully motorised Kettenkrad plus a small AA gun and some figures. I did not know there was more than one company in the game. Hope that helps. AL

1/16 Tamiya RC Porsche King Tiger Full Option
Hello, The model started out as a second hand one that I restored and refitted and repainted. Before Painting After Painting Here are some movies of it in action Details in no particular order. Home made recoil installation out of alu tubes and plastic angle bracket based around a tamiya KT recoil unit. It is ok but it has limited the elevation range due to its size. HL Turret turn motor and ring. HL 3/1 gearboxes and motors braced with bearings. Kenny Kong metal transport tracks. Just for something different. Zimmerit with Apoxie Sculpt material and the little stamp from Imperial Modellbau. Axels tow cable clamp set and tow cables. Asiatam metal road wheels. I had to shave down each suspension arm 2mm to make them fit. Axels track tensioner. Stiffened the suspension and made a floor out of 1cm square profile wood. Located the electronics as far from the dirty Gearboxes and motors as possible. Installed a computer fan on the back wall to cool the electronics. Used plastic angle bracket to make the side sponsons (not present in the old kit) to seal out dust and so on. Made a motor and gearbox cover out of alu plate. Put plugs on all the cables to the DMD/MFU so that it can be quickly removed if necessary for maintenance. Note the big 4 pin plug going to the motors. At the moment it has no elevation unit, instead I have counter balanced the gun with weights so that it stays roughly level. This does not work all that well due to the turret cables and I plan in install a HL elevation unit in the future. Lots of little extra details out of plastic card (mostly yellow and white in the unpainted pics). Armour plate texturing with a Dremel. Weld seams made with Vallejo 401 putty. Engine grill mesh out of alu fly wire. Battle unit diode is in the muzzle brake located in a brass tube and the receiver apple mounts in the commanders cupola. The on off switch is located under the left sponson above the idler wheel, out of sight but easy to reach. Since taking these pics I have reinforced the back plate with epoxy resin. Cheers Alan

RE: About the Xion Puma
Hallo, I was at a trade fair in Leipzig 2 weeks ago. At the fair were the Puma, Kettenkrad and co people. I asked about the Puma and the man there, who claimed to be the Big Boss, said that he was having manufacturing problems in China such as , no water, power shortages and that sort of thing. In my opinion the Puma is the best model in their line up and they should have given that priority instead of the 222 and 223, Kettenkrad etc. I would have bought the Puma straight away but am not the least interested in the other models at all. They are simply too small at 1/16th, however the Puma still has a reasonable size at 1/16. Just my info and thoughts on the subject. Cheers AL

Thanks for the answer, I thought they looked like panther tracks however the single guide tooth in the middle threw me a bit (panther has 2 in the middle, so I guess you cut one off or something). RE: Brand new Impact TU's promptly removed...
I had the same problem about 18 months ago and it is dissapointing to read that the problems in manufacturing and quality control have not been rectified. Stock TUs must be braced with bearings/bushes to hold out with metal tracks, same goes for any gearbox really. Gentle driving with no sudden backwards forwards changes of directions, otherwise you will blow a gear wheel. Personally I install Asiatam 3/1 gearboxes in all my tanks. Hope this helps. Cheers AL

RE: Tamiya Kingtiger Porshe with HL internals
@pcomm, Well it works for me and perhaps the price economics are different between the USA and Germany, here I sell the tamiya gearboxes for about 90euros and buy the HL (brand new) ones for between 20 to 45 euros depending on what type it is. It has been my experience that HL gearboxes hold up fine in heavier models even with metal tracks so long as they are properly braced and fitted with hull bearings (I mount mine on a continuous wooden block and bush the axles with ball bearing races fixed to the hull). Most of the other modelers here in our club also use them. This particular KT has the original plastic tracks and basic metal HL gearboxes (20euro jobs) and drives well. The model also started life as a display model with no internals at all and was converted to RC with HL parts. My broken Panther gearboxes were due to the use of metal tracks and TBU battling, the gearboxes had so much slop in them that they could not take sudden changes of direction that one tends to make in the heat of battling, other tankers that I know have had the same thing happen. I do not know why the Impact gearbox died, it just ate its own gears within about 2 hours of running and was a big disappointment given all the hype about how good they were supposed to be (and yes it was bench run in oil etc before going into action). Their other stuff is good though. I do believe that the earlier Tamiya Panther gearboxes were weak (and I bought one as soon as they were available) and may have since been improved however that being said, a friend of mine blew a Tamiya Kingtiger gearbox at a recent meet, and for the same reasons. I steer clear now of any gearbox that has plastic gears. I am also making a full FO Porsche KT, that I intend to keep as my own, at the moment and will post a report on that in a few weeks time and there you will be able to see photos of the gearbox installation, braces and bearings etc, plus a video. It is about as heavy as a KT can get as it has the new metal road wheels from Asiatam on it in addition to metal tracks, gearboxes etc. Hope this helps. Cheers AL

RE: Tamiya Kingtiger Porshe with HL internals
Thanks, the zimmerit is made with a 2 part epoxy called Apoxie Sculpt, I recommend it as the only way to go. Mix it well, spread it thinly, smooth in out with water and work with the surface horizontal to that gravity works with you. It sets absolutely rock hard after about 3 hours giving your lots of time to work in, I only do one section per day and spread the work out over about a week to lessen the monotony and maintain the interest and quality. KTs are good as you have lots of easy straight runs. The tanks in the background are works in progress. Tracks go on last after I have sprayed on some matt earth colour on the tank to simulate road dust. @pcomm1, I have never had a HL drive train fail in one of my tanks, I use the metal gearboxes, both 3-1 and the stock ones, and they all work fine, some of them are getting on for 3 years old now and the older they get the smoother and quieter they run (I do oil them regularly with that new motorbike oil that sprays on very thin and then the carrying fluid evaporates away leaving only the grease behind, because it starts out thin it is able to penetrate into places that regular oil cannot reach). In the same time I have broken 2 Tamiya Panther gearboxes and 1 Impact gearbox. Join the dots on that one. These days I sell the Tamiya gearboxes as new straight out of the box and install HL 3-1 gearboxes from day 1, this saves having to it later and gives a more realistic driving speed and power ratio. Plus the sale of the Tamiya gearbox generates enough money for 2 HL 3/1 gearboxes. Cheers Alan

RE: Truck Pull crawler motors in 380 size for tanks
Well I got my truck pull type motors from Duratrax and they were a complete flop, not only was the tank slow, it was also powerless too. As Swathdiver suggested I have simply installed a HL 3/1 Flat gearbox in my Panther and it runs just great, even on the short can 370 motors they come with. So thats the end of that experiment the gear box is the most important part regardless of what motor you use. I have not got my hands on one yet however I believe generally that 5 pole motors are more suitable for tanks than the 3 pole motors they commonly come with. However I do not think the difference is so great that it is worth changing the motors out unless they happen to be defective. As an aside I took the 540 truck pull motors out of my Leo2a6 (as it was slow but no more powerful than it already was, similar to the experience with the Duratrax motors above) and installed GTR3 Race motors in it, now it is faster across all throttle ranges with no great loss in power and seems to run longer due to the better quality and efficiency of the motors. Cheers AL

RE: Legendary KV-1
A Ruski that abstains from Vodka, no way, it is liking finding out that King Kong was a poof! Yep you are right about the name however here she is known as Monica, short for Veronica. She is getting on a bit but is still a top sort. I believe the 75L48Kwk on a PIV is more than adequate to drill a KV1, the pzIII would have had problems tho that's for sure. It was a close range shot too. But if it is death by 88mm that you want, I will have a another dig about at the Bundesarchiv and see what else I can find. Cheers AL

I ordered some DuraTrax CC-5000 380-Sized Motor w/Connectr Cliff Clmbr. I hope the 5000 figure refers to the revs. Could not find any info on the difference between the 5000, 8500 and 11000 motors. Will have to wait a bit longer now and then the experimentation can go on. Even allowing for shipping, things are a lot more cheaper in the USA than they are here, you guys have got it good!
