RE: FS One Issue - transmitter issues
Hi Mike, Did you have your antenna extended? On some Tx's you apparently could overheat the circuit board. I didn't know this initially and ran mine unextended fora while but no harm done. Other than that I'd suggest installng the latest updates or calling Horizon about Vista which I know zip about. Thanks Dave

box and packing for Futaba 9C or 9CSuper
Hi All, I was wondering if anybody might have a box for a Futaba 9c (or 9cSuper) transmitter that maybe they don't have the transmitter for anymore. Alternatively, can you tell me where I might find one? I'm looking for the box and/or the styrofoam packing. Thanks for your thoughts on this. Dave

RE: Used Tx buying tips and 9c as entry to 2.4GHz
Man you guys are full of good info. The Super also seems to have a lot more preprogrammed mixes etc. Electric sailplane with ailerons and flaps is my intention as the next step so I can make use of crow. Right now I don't have one with flaps or spoilers. So if I understand the antenna thing correctly, the one could run perpendicularly for 30 mm and then the wire could be 'bent' to run lengthwise down the fuse, parallel to the coax of the other antenna, but probably offset by whatever distance (I guess 30 mm). Correct? Thanks, Dave

RE: Used Tx buying tips and 9c as entry to 2.4GHz
Hi Guys, Great comments, thanks for the guidance. I hadn't thought the car guys would buy up 72 MHz units, that is a concern. I also really like the idea that it would be a flex arrangement whereby I could use both systems just by changing modules. I also love the idea of not having to worry (much) about glitching or external interference. Can you tell me a little about the practicalities of the 2.4 receivers. Could the 2 antenna be run in a fiberglass fuse for example (not carbon fiber though)? How long would the antennae be? The one that has me scratching my head is the one perpendicular to the plane's longitudinal axis (i.e. out towards the wings). sailplane wingspan isn't a problem but it there may not be enough room in that direction if the wings are solid foam or ribbed & sheeted construction (eg, more than a couple of inches would pose some issues?). Can you suggest any tricks to deal with this. If it ran outside, would it catch something as it skids along the ground for a landing (crash or otherwise!). I don't have that sailplane yet but it is on the radar. I read in the Futaba support forum that there was a recall on the 2.4Ghz modules in the early days. What was that about? Thanks again for your help and patience. Dave

Used Tx buying tips and 9c as entry to 2.4GHz
Hi All, I am thinking of picking up a used 9CAP for a number of reasons and I am wondering if you could give me the benefit of your advice? - This would be an upgrade from my 72 MHz 7c with the various programming benefits etc. - I am thinking that a used one may be a good, economical entry to the 2.4GHz world because of the modules available; and I don't think I need what the 10C or 9303 would give me. - Question is would it be overkill for a sailplane with REAF and an elec motor? - Are the Tx module options good ones or do they have shortcomings (other than the latency one which seems to be not such a big thing for fixed wing) - Are there issues with the non-Futaba modules? - would it be a big mistake to look at a 7ch Fasst module since they are less costly than an 8ch? 7ch is enough for me for now. - Never bought a used Tx before, do you have any advice to help me check out what I'll be getting? eg. questions to ask etc? - where can I get a box and the packing for a used tx, eg. for shipping to factory? Thanks for your thoughts, Dave

RE: DX6i and FS One Help Please
Hi Ponz The instructions for using the DX6 are on the Inertiasoft FAQ page at this link: http://www.inertiasoft.com/fsonefaq/index.html#Q1004-FS1 . Inertasoft is the company who wrote the program and who does its development. Maybe read through those and see if they make sense to you. If that doesn't work, there have been questions about how to use/setup the DX7 and DX6 in the main FS One thread here and at RCG. You could also search those and probably find the answers you're looking for. I use FS One and I like it. Graphics are good, physics seem good to me, apparently the heli's need adjustment of the factors in the program to make them better but it is known to be better for fixed wing rather than heli use. It is quite customizable and it allows for a wide variety of rc uses but some people don't like the fact that the program development seems to have ground to a halt (pause?) and there aren't as many aircraft as there are for other programs. I think Inertiasoft says that's because the physics for each aircraft are specific to that aircraft and you can't separate the graphics from the physics. Can it be improved from where it is at now, sure. Anyhow you'll find all kinds of comments about how in love people are with their particular selection. good luck and enjoy, Dave

Hi Guys, Here are the adjustments to make the Trex in the sim fly like others think it should http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8429659/anchors_8473722/mpage_1/key_heli%252Csettings/anchor/tm.htm#8473722 . I don't know anything about those buzz saws so I can't tell you if they're good or not! A couple of guys had said they were bang on so it may be worth a try. Malcolm, I can empathize with you because I also paid the higher price but I use my Tx rather than theirs. You should try using your Tx rather than the one that came with the program ...it's not too hard to do. It would be nice to see some action from Horizon. I thought that with the price drop they would be making more sales and then the support and refinement would come on, but not much sign of it. I thought of going to one of the other ones but reading their threads they all seem to have some issues. FS One does take a lot of bashing. Dave

Hi Katman, I think I saw one of your quick works of art on the RCG post. Can you tell me what brushes you use and where you found the patterns that you used? It looked pretty nice. Regarding the trading of setup information for aircraft, the answer to your question is yes it can be readily shared. The sharing of setup and tweaks for the Rex-450 heli is an example. There's probably a setup file for each aircraft that be copied across just like the images. Thanks, Dave

RE: FSOne customization question for MSelig or others
By the way, to use some of the pre-existing panos from Flickr ... it works well to take an equirectangular pano that has resolution of say 4000 x 2000 or 6000 x 3000; then scaling to the size that you want; sharpening using unsharp mask (set at cubic interpolation in Gimp 2); maybe doctoring the contrast/lightness/saturation; and then cutting it into tiles. There's some great images there and perfect for sloping or helis too. cheers, Dave

RE: FSOne customization question for MSelig or others
Hey Scott, OK, I think I've tried changing everything in the field file without success but I found a couple of clues in threads related to other sims. I don't think FSOne handles panos radically differently than others and one comment made by person called 'flyx' on RCG indicated that slope panos could be handled by adjusting the takeoff height of the plane to being higher than the zero elevation. Then that leaves the 'bottom' of the pano to be the zero elevation. The only problem is that I tried this with the plane position settings in the fld file but it didn't make a difference for me regardless of whether the 'use ground elevation' is on or off in the physics setting. So I suppose I'm ready for your modifyingpilot and takeoff positions suggestion. Here by the way is the post I left elsewhere about the pano creation stuff. Some good links there. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=991479 Thanks for any ideas, Dave

RE: fsone trex 450 heli data
Hi Leadtongue, Here is the stuff on Trex settings that apparently make it more realistic. You can find a bunch more about the trex settings on page 53-54 of the big FS One thread at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4224555/mpage_54/key_trex/tm.htm Anyways, the settings that apparently work best are described as follows, thanks to sctholson and sedergraphics: "
Okay for anyone wanting to try these mods: Copy the Trex heli and give it a name of your choosing; Select Edit from the selections on the left hand side of the screen; Choose Aerodynamics *aerodynamics reference area .2 *Drag Coefficient: Fore/Aft .4, Left/right 2.0, up/down .4 *Rotation Damping: Roll: 0.100, Pitch: 0.100, Yaw: 0.100 Choose the Mass tab *empty weight 1.8 Choose the Main Rotor Tab *Blade Solidity .06 *Blade Rotational Inertia to 0.003 Choose Tail Rotor tab *Rotor Solidity: .35 *Rotor Overshoot Constant 4.2 *Overshoot time constant: .002 I have found that any changes to the main rotor also then require changes to the Tail rotor, I haven't really worked out the relationship so please don't ask. These numbers were developed from just trial and error. One more thing, I have the DX6 radio and for my flying preferences (for now anyway) I have turned down the rates of the right stick (fore/aft and left/right). I don't have a track controller, so I haven't had a chance to look to see how that's done, which would have to be within FSOne's transmitter software settings. Good flying, and I hope these settings work for you as well as they do for me. Kraig, try these new settings, makes the heli fly great. This tidbit will further tame the heli down and it's easy to do. I got ahold of a TracCon controller tonight and here's what I would suggest to anyone who uses the traccon with FSOne. In addition to the prior postings: If you haven't already, make a copy of the TracCon Transmitter. Click Edit, after the transmitter functions become available, click on the tab at the top of the screen where it says "mixing"; In the window that pops up, select CCPM120 and click on the edit button; Click on the following field and change these from: to: Roll Chan Gain: From .6, To .3 Pitch Chan Gain: From .6 to .3 Click OK and Ok again. Now these functions will save and the edit transmitter screen will appear; Go to the Rudder or Left Stick, left/right, and in the transmitter section the second and third column say Min Max respectively; The Min is probably set to -1.0 and the Max is 1.0; (this setting change when the idle up switch is activated on the transmitter, so be sure to adjust both idle up position and the normal position) Click on the Min -1.0 ( a new window will pop up) click the up arrow to get to -.6, click OK Click on the Max 1.0, then click on the down arrow to get to .6, click okay Now switch the to idle up if you were in Normal, or vise versa and repeat these steps. Now go to the Expo% with is the 7th column from the left and change that to 68% for both Normal and Idle up. Click OK in the upper right corner and go fly! Now these changes make this bird pretty tame, but not docile. These will be good settings to get your fingers to do what your mind wants them to do. You can slow the bird down even more by going to .2 in the CCPM window, but that was too tame for me. The tail settings really slow down the tail too, so if you want that faster change the rate to -.7 and .7 respectively for normal and Idle up. These changes work really well with the previously posted changes. Have fun! Scott H"
Hope this helps, Dave

Hi Scott and JS, I think onboard video is a problem if you have it, from when I was researching which sim to get. I remember reading something about how CPU's that share memory for video processing don't play too nicely with high memory users like flight sims. That said, it's funny that your other ones don't have issues with your setup. I have a laptop that I run FS One on that has a switch to let me choose between the GeForce 7400 card and an oboard video (I think that's what it's for) so I'll try to switch back & forth to see if it makes a difference on that machine at least. FSOne customization question for MSelig or others
Hi, I've been trying to setup some custom panos for the FS One sim and I've managed some progress on non-stock panos that I like but now I have run into a couple of catches. I'm hoping that somebody here has either encountered the same or that Michael may be cruising by and able to offer some advice for the following: I searched and downloaded 'equirectangular panos' from Flickr.com, with big enough resolution to suit the tiling described in the inertiasoft FAQ. The images worked great and saved me the trouble of taking pics and stitching them together. Basically, I'm trying to set up a few panos to use with sailplanes to simulate interesting slopes in the mountains or near water but I guess they don't really conform to the Panoexample that Inertiasoft has kindly generated ... because that panoexample assumes a perfectly flat flying field and surroundings (works great for flying off of beaches though). I've also made a couple that I plan to use to learn helis later. For the moment, my issues basically boil down to two hurdles and one question: 1. The take off location I'm using is generally higher than the 'bottom' of the field or the landing zone. For example, in one, I have a hillside road that parallels the ocean (see attached if it worked). I can launch from the road fine (powered or sailplane),and fly nicely above the horizontal plane where the takeoff occurs but if I dip below the 'glass floor' (that represents an ideally flat flying field in the panoexample), the plane shatters asit would if hitting the ground. To overcome this, I thought I would smartly copy the .dom file and.col file from the Westville Miners pano but it turns out that a collision file isn't in the directory for that one. Any suggestions on what file I should copy or how I could correctly overcome this issue? 2. Also, how is the sizing of the aircraft controlled as they travel into the near- or far-distance of the pano? Even in the Westville Miner's pano, if you fly behind the launch position I have noticed that the size of the plane shrinks quickly to a pin point such that the plane is even smaller than a blade of grass in the pano. The same effect occurs in some of the samples that I have set up. Even though the plane looks like a good size at take off, it very quickly shrinks as you are flying away and I would say it shrinks more quickly (i.e. out of proportion with surroundings) than the surroundings. I've been wondering if one of the factors in one of the files is a shrink rate control? 3. Lastly, not a problem because I'm not there yet but, is a map available showing where thermals are located when using a pano with thermals? I hope the Inertiasoft guys and Michael are still monitoring this site? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Hi, Have you: a. downloaded the latest program upgrade from the FS One or inertia soft support sites? b. downloaded and installed the latest version of your audio driver? This is critical. If so, try going to the audio acceleration settings and reduce the setting for audio acceleration until the program works. This worked for me and many others, so maybe you're in the same boat. Dave
