RE: minimizing effects of wind gusts
You can try adding some winglets at the wingtips for more stability. Some say they work pretty well: [link]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=10899566[/link] post #274 [link]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=11194764[/link] post #876, comments lower in post #883 I use the bubble version as seen in the secon link. They do improve stability but i built them rather large so the added drag draws an extra 200-300 miliAmps from the batteries during a P13 flight.

It would also be interesting to know the incidence of the Axiome canalizer relative to the wing. I'm working on a canalizer for my model too; incidence will be slightly adjustable but it would be great to have a good starting point.

RE: Radiance F3A - new pattern kit
This weekend the V1 Radiance took its first win at a local contest here in Bacau, Romania. The prototype was completed and test flown in 2010, but i wasn't able to practice regularly until august 2011. It now has over 250 flights and i think i got it pretty well trimmed out. The weather was calm but extremely hot (41°C or 106F) so i was a little concerned about the motor and ESC temperatures. Fortunately the Himax 210 and CC80HV performed flawlessly, allowing me to fly 3 rounds of P13 without any serious mistakes. A few pictures from the contest:

I'm really happy with the Himax 210 too. I had some problems with bad connectors causing some power issues, but it's running fine now. Tommie has a few Radiance kits in stock, but shipping may take 10-14 working days.

RE: Radiance F3A - new pattern kit
The flat fuselage sides are covered with 3mm balsa, the curved areas with 2mm. I attached an image from the instructions manual that shows the thickness of the balsa sheets used in different areas. For the wings you can use 2mm or 2.5mm balsa, depending on the weight and strength of the balsa sheets. Stabs should be ok even with 1.5mm balsa sheeting. Distance between the front of the cowl and motor box is 80mm, so depending on the length of your motor, you need to use some spacers between the X mount and motor box. For example the Axi 5330 needs 6mm spacers, other motors maybe a little longer. I had 4 different motors installed in my prototype without problems: Scorpion 5525, Infinite 5030, Xpower XC6325 and now the Himax 6330-210, so i think the majority of the current backmounted outrunner motors can be used.

RE: Radiance F3A - new pattern kit
Hi Rune, Radiance is designed for backmounted outrunner motors. The diameter of the spinner is 82mm, so i would say you can slide a regular outrunner in through the front of the cowl, but not with the X mount installed. Anyway, if you choose to glue the cowl in place, i'm not sure you will be able to access the motor screws easily. If you are concerned about the small cowl screws, you don't have to drill them through the side of the fuselage. There is a way to hide them inside the model (drill the holes through the firewall and cowl frame).

RE: HobbyKing Turnigy Rotomax 1.60
It's way too heavy for pattern (849g). kV also seems a little too high, but since they recommend a 21x13W APC propeller, maybe it's possible to use a 21x14.

RE: Radiance F3A - new pattern kit
Hi Steve, Maybe in the future, if the sales go well, we will be able to offer a IC power version, but at the moment it would be too expensive for us to retool for IC power, build new airframes and test them. Don't know about the OS33, but looking at other kits designed for the YS170 like the japanese Wingray, i would say the structure is at least equally strong.

Thanks Gdaddy, here are the dimensions you asked for: - max fuselage height in the canopy area: 340mm - max fuselage width: 160mm - rudder is 414mm tall In general Radiance is a little bigger than the Integral.

RE: Radiance F3A - new pattern kit
Hi Steve, You're right, paint is required for the cowl, canopy and spinner. The fuselage can be either film covered or glassed/painted, it's your choice. The film for the fuselage weights around 80g, glass/paint is a little heavier (~240g) so you need to be careful. You can find more details in Claude's post [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9401044]here[/link] (post #118). I would say if you decide to go with glass/paint you need to choose the lightest balsa you can find for sheeting the fuselage.

RE: Himax 6330-F3A Pattern Motor
[quote]ORIGINAL: KGSS28 Guys I have a Himax 200 with only about 80 -100 flights on it that seems to be slowing down and not making the power it did just days ago. There also does not seem to be any increase in power from about three quarter to full throttle. I have not changed anything and have tried several different batteries with no improvement . Prop is 20x13 and CC Ice 80 controler. Thoughts Please Thanks Kirk [/quote] I have a similar problem. I was impressed with the power of the Himax 210 when i first tried it, but now the verticals are really slow and obviously the motor has less power. The static tests seem normal (89A at full throttle, Falcon 20.5x14.5 V2 propeller, CC Ice 80HV on a fresh set of Rhinos). Anyway, i suspect the problem is not the motor itself. I found that replacing the motor connectors improved the situation quite a bit, but it still wasn't enough to completely solve the problem. Later i also found that the battery connectors were degraded by the spark that occurs when closing the circuit so i replaced those too, but the weather was pretty bad here lately and couldn't test these changes. I would say you should check all the connectors and see if they are in good shape. Please let me know if you find other possible causes or fixes to this problem. Thanks.

RE: Wing adjusters - worn off
As a quick fix, you can try wrapping some teflon tape around the adjuster screw thread. It adds some thickness to the threads and eliminates the vertical play. It worked for me.

For the spinner, we decided to use a CNC machined mold and also a press tool to make sure the final part will run true without any vibrations. After the epoxy resin is cured, the excess material is also cut using a lathe.

As you can see, there's enough space inside the cowl for the OS33, but you would probably need to replace the standard exhaust with a tuned pipe. Please keep in mind that the structure was tested with electric power only.

RE: Radiance F3A - new pattern kit
First steps of stab assembly: The anhedral stabs are built parallel to the building board, which means the root rib is not parallel to the other ribs. The supporting jigs help guiding the root rib in the correct position. The servos will be mounted inside the stabs, using the second rib as a support.

RE: Radiance F3A - new pattern kit
Thanks Leo, we had quite a few questions about a glow version. For us it would be too expensive and time consuming to re-tool for glow power, buy engines and accessories, build and test a new prototype, etc. But for those willing to build a glow powered Radiance, it would be quite easy to convert the model. Basically what's needed is to cut a new firewall, remove the frame indicated in the attached picture and build a fuel tank support. Additional reinforcements will be needed on the inside of the fuselage for attaching the firewall and also the cowl support tabs need to be reinforced to withstand the YS engine vibrations. For the new firewall you can use the one included in the kit as a template, but without the big rectangular cut in the middle. I can provide a PDF file for the glow firewall and fuel tank support if needed. The attached pictures show the modifications needed for glow power conversion:
