RE: A4 Skyhawk build
Thanks guys... If it wasn't for all the nice comments and messages on my Facebook page I'd have probably already binned it. Bizarrely I really enjoyed piecing it all back together today! I'm still not convinced it can be saved and if it can I'm going to do something completely different with it as it would never be the same trying to replicate how it was. I'm in the process of ordering another pre painted Argentinean A4 from SM so hopefully I can improve on my last rendition. The repaired airframe will be used as a bit of a test bed and I fancy doing it in an Indonesian scheme. I'm hassling Ali to buy one of his models in the mean time but I cant have it till after Jetpower so I'm Jetless until then :( I'm hoping to get it to the talented Phil Noel at Pinnacle Aviation to see if he can repair the damage, there's certainly no one better qualified to give it a go.

RE: A4 Skyhawk build
Sadly due to an error on my part the A4 looks like this now :( Trying to get it airborne on grass, it didn't unstick and when it did rolled in. Learnt loads from it and having never had an accident since starting jets over 10 years ago I suppose my time had come.

Hi, yes we've never experienced any issues in the past but it appears this one did. All the tubing was large bore and it had a large vent. All sorted now at any rate :)

Thanks :) A few pictures of the finished model outside in the rain before being packed for delivery... and my 2 year old checking the structural integrity of the fin [8|] I'll try and get some photos of it flying at some point... Cheers, Alex

RE: SM F5 'Skoshi Tiger' build
Finished with the light weathering Ali requested... the photos don't show it very well even with a fast lens.... as I said previously its subtle. The installation is nearly there, I need to make the aft tray for a UAT and install the tanks then its a trip to MK. I'll hopefully get a chance for a few out-door shots in the next few days. Cheers, Alex

Ive made a start on the extra painted details... The chequers were fun to do [:(] Ive added a subtle weathering here and there and painted the linkages etc... I'm waiting on a few stencils to finish it off plus a few more passes with the airbrush on the weathering front and it should be ready for delivery next week.

RE: SM F5 'Skoshi Tiger' build
This has been a project that has been on the back burner but its finally time to get it out to its new owner before my full time job ramps up for the summer leaving very little time for models. I still have my A4 and perhaps something a bit different to play with over the summer months though I've had some help along the way....Phil & Steve from 'Fighteraces' have done a great job on the paint and Gary has helped with the initial install adding internal paint, all the air-rams and servos which has left me with the final installation. I'm pleased with the models general appearance and glad I got Phil to make up the probe as it adds real character. My main concern is that when I look at it I don't get any sense that its finished, its difficult to explain but I feel that there's something missing. I have a few ideas which will involve repainting a portion(s) of the model but I think it will complete it, adding missiles and painting the gear will be my first jobs to alleviate the emptiness I feel.

RE: A4 Skyhawk build
I've spent more hours on this in the last week than I care to count [:(] I wouldn't mind but there's not much to show for it... First of all I repaired the front wing tube guide and tied it into R2 with some decent ply, carbon cloth/tow, epoxy and finally the ply plate glued in with hysol. The gear doors are just plain layup (because this was the prototype) with no detail or depth to them so I decided on some scale detail as they are large doors that hang down in full view when the gear is out. I built the detail up with plastic, not sure what type. I got it from my local craft shop on its K&S stand. Still a way to go with priming filling and rivet detail but I'm happy thus far. I still have the rear doors to do, make a release mechanism for the drop tanks, add the lighting, install the servos, add lots of little details and thats just the wings but I'm enjoying working on something thats mine for a change :)

RE: Forming light covers. Best way?
Hi Mark I normally do this on my builds, I just delivered a VJ which I installed lights on. To get a perfect fit and finish takes many hours and numerous attempts at the pull to get an even thickness. My next light install will get molds and be vac formed as it will take the same time but have a better finish plus I'll be able to offer the lenses for sale. As Mick says you'll never get the correct curve because you'll have to cut it down considerably to get it to sit flush. I use K&S plastics from my local toy shop in varying thicknesses depending on the length of the pull.

It's easy enough to spray a few markings on the stock kit. Email FB and buy some of the paint they're using on the camo colours.

RE: I have to apologize once again to my customers.
The products are great, I've used them before and been happy but no point holding a build up for months when I could be flying the thing. I'm sure Dan is working really hard to get the orders done but on this occasion I'm past the point I can wait any longer..... I'll email again and ask for a refund. Dan's told me in the past his slow/no response to emails was caused by continuing email problems at his end. It's probably happening again..... at least I know he can see RCU.

RE: A4 Skyhawk build
I tried a locking cylinder too but wasn't happy I could keep the door closed enough for it to catch which is when I tried the spring/magnet combo. I've moved the geometry around since then so the ram pulls the door a little as well. I suppose I'm about 75% happy it will work. I'm not too worried as my model will be flown in white before I go to lots of effort and expense painting it so theres plenty of time to re do things without ruining the finish. Not that Ali knows it yet but he'll be doing the maiden (hopefully) I'm sure he'll find a weakness if there is one. Think I'll do the pre flight checks though [;)][:(] Let me know how your solution works as I may be copying it if this doesn't pan out. Cheers, Alex

RE: A4 Skyhawk build
Nice work! Hope it solves the problem for you. I've always found gear door problems to be very trial and error, just give it a go and see... How much better is it when you try and pull the door down by hand? My solution was to use these small 5mm Neodymium magnets which are very powerful. Once the door is closed its hard to open it and the ram doesn't stand a chance especially with the spring holding the door. The smaller ram lifts the door by 10mm which is enough to release the magnets and it pops open, hopefully it will work but I'll only know for sure once its flying. All I have to gauge it by is that its far more powerful than the stock set up was at holding the door. Cheers, Alex

RE: A4 Skyhawk build
Hi there, I'll get some pictures in the next few days for you. Basically I've got a two inch stroke ram on the doors and put magnets on each corner and a spring on the ram to help hold it down once closed as the geometry isn't correct but it never will be because of space we have to work in. The ram can't overcome the force of the spring and magnets once closed again because geometrically it's in the wrong place. I've teed a small 1 inch ram into the door down line and gear up line, this pops up and pushes the door open about 5mm then the main ram does the rest. It will make more sense when you see the pics. Hope this helps in th mean time. Cheers, Alex

Hi Thomas Looking good! Is that fluid in the airline in pic 1 going to the single action valve? Haven't got much to show with mine, just some very boring structual improvements to the wing and adding gear door detail as mine are just plain layup doors, also having fun with the air rams for the gear doors :( all sorted now (I hope). You must be finished yours by now? Cheers, Alex

RE: A4 Skyhawk build
Hi Alex. The tubes are usually just Guide Tubes. The strength comes from the plywood ribs that the spar passes through. I think you will be ok. I love A-4's. I may end up with a Skymaster A-4 some day
I'm most likely being paranoid but what I failed to show or articulate in the last post is that the spar only goes through the root rib. The spar doesn't reach the second rib just butts up against it. The front spar is really just an anti rotation peg as the main spar runs through most of the wing but it still doesn't feel me with a warm fuzzy glow when I look at it especially as theres a distinct absence of glue :( Good idea with the catch pins, thanks. Cheers, Alex
