RE: 120SP carb and vibration issues
ktcanuck: Yes, that is the O.S flex pipe. I believe that there are actually 2 lengths available 170 mm and 120 mm from them (tower Hobbies) including a cast 90 degree header that will fit the RCV 120 SP. Do a search on O.S FS-91 surpass accessories on the Tower Site, or, click here: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0040p?&I=OSMG2624 Both ends are threaded on these pipes (11X75 Same as the 120SP) and they come with a jam nut on both ends. The tube is made from a solid tub and, as such will hold pressure and gasses along its length. The end you see on my tube was made by me (last minute before a flying event in an attempt to get airborne) as I needed to exit the gasses out of the engine bay and also needed to use pressre from those gasses to pressurize the tank and prime it on first run. The nipple is made by me after the stock muffler and brass nipple simply sheared off along with the mufflers (2) due to the vibration loosening and then chewing up the threads on both mufflers from this engine and same parts from my newer engine in the Spit. I realize the 120SP does not have a lot of pressure it generates as the RPMs are not as high as other engines but, the bit it does help on fuel delivery to the carb in my set up. I threaded it and then Silver Soldered it to my exhaust stack, it won't vibrate or shear off now! I would like to move it up the tube as I know the pressure would only be greater there. Unfortunately, so would the heat as well so, Ill make a new pressure nipple which will be longer with cooling fins at the base of it to keep the silicone from burning off. I had that happen on the break in runs on the bench. And, when it did, it changed my high and low needle settings. Not so good if you are flying......

120SP carb and vibration issues
Hello, I have two RCV 120 SP's. One purchased at the Toledo show a few years ago (When Wildcat Fuels was the US distributor) and another Purchased from the KMP booth a year or two ago for one of their Spitfires. The older SP was to go into a Top Flight P40 which I was building. The engine sat in its box for a few years unused until this past year when my old trusty EZ zero (800 hours flying time with the same Saito 56) was lost in a mid air over our flying field. A friend had a World Models Zero that he gave me and since then (months) I have been working on this aircraft detailing just a plane old arf into something a bit more elaborate and decided to use the older SP in it. The engine ran fine on the bench and during break in but always had and continues to have a lot of vibration. More so than the newer SP which I have also broken in and is installed in my Spitfire and is nearing completion but not for this season. The older SP vibrates something terrible despite different props (currently I have a Solo Props 3 blade 16" installed). So much so that I seem to have developed slop in the high speed needle. The low speed just free spins without any travel along the threads and allows air to cause the engine to serge up and down. It is impossible to tune. I am confident that this is the problem because after thinking it was just that carb I unbolted the newer carb from the SP mounted in the Spitfire and installed it onto the older SP in the zero. All was fine.....for a few test runs on the bench anyway but soon it too developed the same issue. Supporting my theory is that I can see the black finish on the high speed needles worn off. I thought perhaps the engine was mis timed slightly so I reset that to no avail of the problem. Now I have two unusable carbs, Two unflown and disabled SP's and a warbird formation group (that I have flown with for 15 years) that isn't impressed with all the fuss in getting this engine going and the flying season is almost over here in Michigan. Can you help me resolve this issue Please?

RE: RCV Engines U.S. Flying and Demmo Team
Hello, I just ran across this thread doing some general RCV research. Are there still openings for the demo teams? I have 2 RCV 120SP's in an extensively reworked World models Zero and a soon to fly KMP Spitfire. My group has been flying WWII warbirds in formation at our field every Tuesday for the past 10 years...We can fly very tight patterns and acrobatics together. On calm afternoons getting within a wing length of each other on the flyby's is not unusual......it's very exciting for us and the people who just happen to be driving by. Often they become regulars and come by just to watch every week. I live in Michigan and would be happy to be part of your efforts to spread the word about RCV engines. I'll attach a few pix of my New Zero (currently flying in primer) with the 120SP here. This one replaces my old OK models Zero with over 800 hours of flight time! Also seen below is my upcoming KMP Spit with custom made exhaust header/stacks which I designed and created. This aircraft will be fully detailed over the upcoming winter. Best to you and the company, George Dzahristos

RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines.
Glad to see she is ready once again! So much of this hobby is perseverance and willpower not just dollars. Your aircraft and Josh's hub are evidence of that. Hopefully my Zero will be ready soon as I just took delivery of Josh's last hub to be used inside a 3" spinner as the solo version is just too bulky. Thank you Josh, the hub is truly beautiful. Wayne from Solo just emailed me tonight. Hopefully by blades will be here soon. I would love to use 18' but ground clearance will be a problem so I have to go with 16 and a corse pitch....Probably 13 or 14 degrees. In the mean time I have to repair the wing.......Tried to fly her with a 16" 10 master airscrew 3 blade.....Not enough pitch and she tip stalled on take off breaking a wing in half... pretty similar break to the corsair vid. I'm almost finished with the repair.

Yes, I actually have one of those for my spitfire....a little toopointy for the bulbous spinner look of the Zero for me...Supposedly Skyshark has one for their FW190 with no cut outs but have yet to see one on the net....I'm looking though! Geo

RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines.
Hey Juice, Right now the spinner on the Zero is 2 5/8" inches but looks a bit small..3" will work better. I will need to modify it anyway as the world models spinners are two blade cut outs only. Anyone know of an accurate 3 or no cut out Zero / FW190 spinner out there? I may make my own using glass cloth and microbaloons......again, I could use the weight out that far to help with CG.

RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines.
Thanks for the info Joe! The weight is a definite positive here as I did shorten the cowl by an inch and a half and fuse/ thrust box to make it more scale. Nose weight, especially out that far forward is a plus....All the servos are moved very far forward and stacked one atop the other in the fuse and on each side the fuel tank as well....everything is fore of the spars! hate dead weight! On the larger Zero the radial engine and soloprops hub setup should help a lot there too!

RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines.
Josh, Thanks for the compliments on my project. It's a smaller Zero that is a test bed for techniques I will use on and 80" inch CMP with 5 cylinder ASP 400R radial. Work on that begins next winter. I have the plane, engine and other assorted goodies. At some point I will need a hub for this as well. Regarding the hub: 3" overall diameter is a bit big but I'm willing to have the blade collars stick out of the spinner if need be. Perhaps they can be shortened up a bit? I think I can also go slightly larger on the spinner, World Models makes many different sizes of this style of spinner, some only slightly larger / smaller that the next. I will probably go with the 16" diameter solo blades as ground clearance for anything larger will be an issue. Josh, with your hub, on the RCV 120SP I will also need the hardware kit 101 from Solo, correct? Thanks for your help Josh.....where do I sign up for the hub?

RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines.
Hey Juice, Do you still have a few hubs around? I have a kit bashed World models Zero. I recently added panel lines and rivets....lot of rivets...that would really benefit from the smaller hub and Solo props? I need it to fit inside the spinner as the solo prop hub is just too bulky!

RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines.
Sorry to hear about your radio/battery issue Joe but glad to hear the prop and engine combo works so well. I have a world models 60 sized zero (12 lbs. dry) with a 120sp and am considering a solo prop three blader for it. Is you 18" a two blade or more? I do have a solo prop 4 blade and 120sp in a KMP spitfire but it's not ready to fly yet. The engine and prop combo on the test bench was very good however.

RE: KMP New Spitfire Mk XIV
The usual problem with scale is exhaust and retracts / ground handling. Forever chasing solutions to those issues. Were you getting muffler pressure to the tank? Home made exhausts are notorious for loosing pressure during flight (leaks and loosening) causing erratic engine performance and flameouts.

RE: 120 sp newby questions
I have two SP 120s of different vintage. The first I ran was purchased from the KMP/RCV booth in Toledo in 07 and is now in a KMP spitfire which Im currently building. This engine had little vibration and not so much mess while running and braking in. I'm using a 4 blade soloprop and the flywheel effect is great. The plane is not flying yet but the numbers on the test bench look good. The other SP120 I have is a few years old (been in the box till this year) and is in a World Models .60 Zero. Break in of this engine has been very different....lots of black oil from the breather and starter bolt seal and tons of vibration in the midrange......so much so that it worked the screws loose on the test bench and shook the muffler loose and worked over the threads on the muffler where it screws to the exhaust tube, ruining the threads of the muffler. It also loosened the pressure nipple off the muffler and the carb. all on just the first few runs on the test stand and 1 flight. To that end, where can I get a replacement for the carb nipple? I'm aware the earlier engines used straight gears for more power but more gear slap and noise, is this true? This older engine is now hard to turn over when cold and makes a loud click when rotating past TDC. Is all this normal for the older Gen engine?

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Thank you Kmot! I did actually end up at that website earlier this afternoon and ordered a few of those! I figured the Magnums are the same as the ASP's and the 400R is based on .80 jug. I recalled all that from earlier discussions on this forum... Very helpful forum indeed, thanks again.

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Thanks Kmot........ I figured as such but just wanted confirmation. I'm sure that has been my problem in getting her going all along. I'll look into the o ring replacement. I would think a few engines uses a very similar size. Anyone know which for sure? I would think the OS would be similar.

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Hey guys.....Has anyone taken out their low speed needle on their ASP 400R and looked at the o ring there? Mine seems to be pinched but I just wan to confirm that this is not normal. My engine will run on prime from the exhaust stacks but will not from the carb......I suspect this is o ring is the problem. Any suggestions on needle valve setup for the high and low speed.....my low speed was way unscrewed out of the box!

RE: Giant Scale RCV ??
Bring on the big RCV SP! Bring on something to power a 150 sized model or even a quarter scale would be ideal....I'm sure I'm not alone in the following statement: I just hate the sound of single or twin gas engines which always seem to sound either like a chain saw, lawn mower, or dirt bike. Nothing comes close to a four stroke for sound! In addition to the discerning scale builder and with the proliferation of larger ARF warbirds and scale aircraft of all types modeler interested in this portion of the hobby is greater than ever before. Proof that the rest of the industry realize that can be seen by the countless introductions of larger and more scale arfs on almost a daily basis. Someone is buying those models and powering them with something. Even Saito just came out with a much larger gas powered four stroke. Why not a larger RCV? It just makes scents. Most of the guys here want a larger engine to put into larger warbirds with scale multi blade of 3, 4 or more configurations..... a too big two blade isn't really the issue. Simply put, Guys don't buy RCV's for any reason other than the idea of hiding the engine completely within the cowl and swing a scale prop...both in terms of prop diameter and number of blades. Period. As far as availability of props. There are plenty of composite manufacturers of 3 blades used mostly on the IMAC circuit turned by DA 50s and up but an even better alternative for the scale enthusiast is a company called Solo props who will make any size, shape and number of blades you may wish and with their ingenious adjustable pitch setting hub your are golden. I have one for my KMP Spitfire and love it. The adjustable hub also helps produce a fly wheel effect which seems to smooth out the RCV idle. My plane is due to fly fairly soon but I'm fabricating a functioning scale exhaust that has taken quite some time to complete. Nothing will show outside the cowl that wasn't on the full scale....Here are a few pix.
