RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
I have some development. I found the perfect skirt material, a giant blue IKEA bag. It is the perfect size and has all the excess material in case i need a new one, or I mess up. oh, and, very little sewing is needed.

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
Long time since I have been here, but now I have started work again. My grandpa is in town and is giving me ideas. This Friday im going on a ship, but I will be able to do some work starting Saturday. For flotation I'm using a part of a styrofoam cooler. For the skirt, I shall use a reusable shopping bag. Thats all the news I have, so yeah.

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
I have the whole thing put together except for the skirt and flotation. All the electronics work so thats good. I also formulated a backup plan in case either the skirt doesnt inflate at all or any other non electrical failure that would take a while to fix. Here my plan is...i build an airboat. i have seen enough threads to be able to build one from scratch, all i would need is to know ehat to waterproof the hull with. Edit: I cant figure out my camera so i cannot put a picture up, but i can assure you it is as i posted before.

I use sketchup for random boredom things like ships and stuff. I also used it to design my hovercraft.

That looks cool, i cant tell you much about how it will perform because i dont have any airboat experience. Also, what design program is that? Can i have a link?

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
Yesterday and today i made alot of progress, i have cut all the pieces, made 2 rudders that move together placed supporting bulkheads and glued them, prepared motor mounts (i found a use for the foam pieces, the motor cowlings in particular which are perfectly 3 1/2 in in diameter), and i am about to prepare the electronics, after that i will place the motors and servos and do a test. In the next week or two i will have bought that flotation cushion and installed it. Thats all i have for now, hope to have more later.

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
I have been tight on time this summer but i see free time in my near future, so i am hoping to get some progress. It is a good thing i have done all my cutting because my dad is going away for a bit and doesnt trust me with his tools, just the drill which i bought for him... If i can figure out my camera i will have some pictures soon (technology doesnt like me...). I know i should have asked this earlier, but what kind of glue should i use, normal wood glue or something i have to go and buy? Also i am going to try to get a flotation cusion that uses an extremely low density foam for flotation instead of styrofoam, because i have seen styrofoam that washes up on the beach i would like to use my hovercraft on and the foam is all deterierated and falls apart when you pick it up, and i dont want that to happen to the foam on my hovercraft.

Alpha Omega In reply to your post about skirt material, i have found a dead umbrella, which i will use. In reply your second post this is my first custom build and my second build, so i will leave v-pitch until after i have gotten to brushless and lipo.

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
Today I am hoping to get some progress. I am going to drill all my holes and cut out all the pieces for the superstructure. I am thinking of using a different flotation material than plain styrofoam because i have seen what happens when it is exposed to water for extended periods of time. Any suggestions(thickness, where i can find it, etc)? That is all i have for you today, maybe i will have enough done to take a picture of the components, but that is a maybe.

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
School is over now and i will be working on my project more. So far i have a cut piece of plywood, cut basswood for the superstructure, two fans, and some templated styrofoam scored to the size i want. Before i can make any progress i need to drill the hole in the deck. I have a 3 inch drill bit but i cant figure out how to attach it to the drill, my dad works weird hours so i find it hard to remember that i need to ask. next i will cut the styrofoam and drill holes in that too. I have not planned any further after that, but once i have i will post.

I have not yet created a cutaway due to the fact my laptop no longer has a classic mouse, and i have been doing things with my family. But the second i have something i will definately post imediatly. Was that redundant...nevermind. also my grades for the 5th grading period came out and i have a 2.33 so i need to work on my stuff, but i can get to a 3.0 by the end of the school year. i am going to 6 flags magic mountain saturday and paintball the next so that cuts 2 work days out of my build...but anyways im done talking. Hope to post something soon...

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
Sorry i couldnt get anything posted this last weekend. I was doing stuff with my dad. My new dimensions are 18x12". I went to Michaels and bought a 1/4" thick sheet of plywood as well as 1/16" thick pieces of basswood. The plywood is a tad heavy but when i cut it down to size and drill a hole in the middle it will be significantly lighter. I had some issies with the Chinese wiring of one of my edf units, but i fixed it. I am going to start making progress on weekends due to the fact my grades arent very great, but i will have some development by next Sunday.

No problem about giving you something to procrastinate with. that is what forums are for right? Well it sounds like you are a busy guy and I should leave you alone, but what is a velomachine, and what does it do. However you sound like a good student, which i am generally not, and like you could easily stop procrastinating and crank out homework assignments really fast, which i suck at, well good luck with your Ap exams and essays.

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
I have decided that with my skill level i am going to chance my design...now it will have one superstructure instead of two, and one edf unit will do the lifting and the other will do the propelling. will have pic of new design soon...maybe on saturday...(i have to write an essay, almost done but i still need to tweek with the words)...it will also be smaller than the lcac design due to the lack of a storage deck im thinking 18"x9"

Edit picture. Fabric pieces werent large enough so i extended them. I added electronics box 3.5"x3"x2" for battery, reciever, speed controller, and its close enough to the edf units that it will reach with the supplied wires. Ramp might not be possible unless i can find an extention wire for the servo. Here it is

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
Yeah i found a problem with the holes(more work) so i will probably just do that except im using centrifugal fans so 2 will provide inflation and 2 will provide the cuision of air that escapes underneath the skirt, btw i have the plans for the skirt panels i just made what i want the skirt to look like and flattened it out(long process) here is the hovercraft and the skirt panels

RE: RC Hovercraft Project2
I found a dead umbrella and i think i will use that as my skirt material there are no rips just broken metal spars, and it is waterproof as well as very light i have a general idea of how i wil put it together, and inflate it. It will be cut into four to six pieces which will be sewn together and segmented into four seperate air pockets which will be inflated by the centrifugal fans. there will also be holes on the inside so that air can get underneath and keep it hovering.

hmmmm...mine is going to be 24 bow to stern and 13 in width but i dont know how much fabric to cut because i dont have a guideline or general size to follow; how deep is the skirt inflated?
