RE: Jetjoe 3000 turbine
ORIGINAL: BJ64 and BTW AnyAndrews...good to see that I keep you so fixated as to quote my every word. BJ:)
Actually BJ, I find your experiences on how to keep your new JJ3000 running quite facinating. Also I'm curious, why won't the JJ solenoid valves work? I don't think I would recommend telling new users to bypass them to get it started.

And just because you enjoyed going through all of these masochistic tribulations you recommend others to do the same? Thats not good advice in my opinion.

RE: Jetjoe 3000 turbine
I wouldn't exactly call this a glowing review on a new JJ3000. You did say you never buy used turbines right? Who wants all of these problems out of the box? Out of the 8 turbines I have owned, only one has given me the problems shown below. It was a used RAM 1000 that I bought when I first got into the hobby. Had I been warned I would have NEVER bought it in the first place. I have never had to deal with the problems you list below with my Jet Central or Jetcat turbines. This forum constantly warns people about JJ turbines for a reason. So, LOL, is your idea of a perfectly running turbine? - From BJ: I had similar problems with start-ups on my JJ3000. First and foremost, like others have suggested, is to make absolutely sure that your RPM sensor wire does not pick up any electrical interference from anything else. Carefully twitch the wires together all the way back to the FADEC. In fact, I twitched ALL my high-current (thick) wires together. Next thing I did is I mounted all my gear along a line on the opposite side of the Turbine to where the RPM sensor goes into the Turbine (looking at it with the compressor end facing me, Turbine end facing away). The RPM sensor wires and EGT (exhaust thermocouple) are on the right hand side - so I mounted everything else on the left hand side. Most Turbine FADECS use two basic things to tell it what the engine is doing - RPM, and EGT (exhaust gas temperature). If either of these signals it not reliable, the FADEC will go nuts. A common problem with JJ Turbines is the RPM sensor picking up stray electrical signals, or 'spikes' - you'll usually see these on your 'Monitor' during start-up, as the RPM will seem to be jumping all around the place, even if the engine 'sounds' like it's more or less holding the same RPM. Twisting the RPM sensor wires together so they look a bit like a rope helps them to stop working like an 'antenna' and picking up stray pulses. The JJ solenoids can also leave a bit to be desired - my Propane solenoid wouldn't shut off. In the end, I bypassed both solenoids so that I run Propane straight from the can, and Kero straight from the bottle. The Propane is easy enough to control with the supplied valve that fits on the can. I don't open mine until my Monitor says 'Glow Test'. You don’t really want the Turbine filling up with gas before the glow-plug starts up – blue flames everywhere if you do that. And you don't need to open the manual gas valve up all the way either - it's a bit like a gas cigarette lighter - turn it up too high, and the lighter won't light - but you can still hear the gas. I also have a beefy 20-amp ‘kill switch’ between the battery and the FADEC. That way, if anything does go wrong, I can turn off the Propane using the gas valve, and kill the electric power to the unit – no pump = no fuel. And it all just stops. Oh, and do have a good fire extinguisher handy – just in case. CO2 is best, if you can get one. I don't know what fuel-pump you got with your JJ, but mine has 'JetJoe' written on it (a newer variety?). A tip I got was to make a closed loop, and let the fuel pump run a couple of times for 5 to 10 mins at a time. By 'closed loop', I mean grab a source of Kero - feed it into the inlet of the pump (there should be arrows telling you which pipe is 'in' and which one is 'out'), and feed the hose from the outlet back into the fuel source (can, bottle - whatever you're using). That should 'bed' the fuel pump in nicely. By using a ‘closed loop’, the fuel pump will pump fuel just as it would if you were firing the Turbine. But don’t ever run the fuel-pump ‘dry’ (without fuel going through it) – quick way to burn it out. My Turbine 'weeped' a bit around the glow-plug recess. Particularly on start-up, but seemed to go away once the Turbine was running. I carefully pulled the plug out, checked that it had a base washer, then put it back in again and re-tightened it. I ain't perfect yet, but a hell of a lot better. If you've got white smoke or fuel pissing out everywhere during start-up, I'd suggest that there's something really wrong. Either a leak somewhere, or it's ramping onto Kero way too soon. The reason you use Propane during start-up is to get the internals of the Turbine nice and hot - Kero needs to vaporize before it will ignite properly. Shunting Kero into the engine too early can cause the Kero to try to ignite before the combustion chamber is hot enough to do the job properly (vaporize, then burn). Could be blocked injector 'sticks' too, but I'd reckon it wouldn't smoke at all if Kero wasn't getting through. I would think it would more likely want to sit there burning Propane forever while it waited for the RPM and temp to increase, eventually telling the FADEC that it was running properly on Kero. Sounds like it’s not getting that far (??). Hope you get it started. Post your results, huh? _____________________________ Any day above ground is a good day - Think...

RE: Jetjoe 3000 turbine
ORIGINAL: 76Phantom OK, Guys, I have had 2 Jetjoe turbines and the both run just great. I presently own a jj14, Jetcat p70 and a Wren 44. I have owned a Wren 54 as well. The wren 44 gold that I presently own has been nothing but a head ach from the get go. Now I'm not bashing Wren, I'm just stating that you can buy any turbine out on the market today an get a bad one for what ever reason. My Jetcat has had two issues, First right from the get go the ECU failed and Had to send it back. Second, had a bearing issue and had to send it back again. Once replace it has had no further issue. It is currently in my A-4. My jj14 that I purchased used was abused but ran OK. Sent it back in to have the take a look at it. They replaced just about everything for next to nothing. Ever since then I have flow about 50 flights on without any problems what's so ever. I would gladly purchase any JJ turbine out there today. So my point being is that you could get a problem child in any product you purchase today. In fact I'm in the process of purchasing a JJ300 for my JetLegend F18.
Do you have any pics of your JJ installation? I'm curious what they look like installed.

RE: Skymaster F-16 rudder flutter fix
ORIGINAL: Jack Diaz I have given a lot of thought to the modification suggested for the rudder linkage in the SM F-16 1/6, to prevent rudder flutter. I am not convinced that the placement of the rudder servo in the fin is an optimal solution. I think that such set up has more negative than positive consequences: Negative: -Looks ugly !!!!!! -The force applied to the servo is asymmetric with respect to the servo output shaft. The original SM system (pull-pull) is symmetric, i.e. less play. -The structural integrity of the horn/glue/rudder system is by far weaker than the steel rod imbedded in the bottom of the rudder. -There is no torque or force gain at all. By the contrary, the original system allows to connect the rods closer to the servo output shaft; thus, reducing play. -Heavy duty ball links can not be used. Positive: -No play in the rudder horn/link contact. In the original SM system there is some play between the torque rod head and the rudder rod bar. This has probably been the cause of flutter. So, installing the servo in the fin is not giving any mechanical advantage, but is aimed to eliminate the play generated in the contact between the rudder rod and the torque head. What I did was to focus on eliminating this play without the negative consequences. I have logged 25 flights, with ''no mercy'' regarding top speed, and have not had any sign of flutter (I am using 38 pounds of thrust). Here is what I did: -Make sure the torque head is oriented so that the deeper part of the slot faces fwd. (this is an easy mistake, and could cause the rod to disconnect from the torque head at full deflection if placed backwards). -Wrap a 1/4'' by 1/4'' piece of aluminum tape around the rudder steel torque rod. -''Force'' the fin-rudder assy over the torque head.... absolutely no play at all !!! - I use a JR 8611 servo without the rubber grummets. Rods are connected to the innermost hole of the servo arm, and I use HD ball links on the torque arm. Rudder has absolutely no play at all now. Hope you guys find these tips useful Regards Jack
Absolutely no play on "the mod" either. It's rock solid. Ask anyone who has seen me fly my F16. Andy

RE: Global Jet Racks - New Release
ORIGINAL: mikedenilin Hi All, Thank you for the suggestion. The price includes shipping. I will try to find ways to reduce the shipping cost and over all costs. Hi Raffy and Dave 1. Like Dave said above, making a way so that the jets can sit on their fuse would be nice, especially if the wingspan is so big that the wings have to be taken off the model - this is good suggestion. will work on some ideas. 2. Make the rail that the mains sit on wide enought so that some ''wide'' stanced jets can go on them like a Bandit, Ultra bandit or even an F-4 phantom. - at this moment, it will fit our JL F-4 and MIG 15, pretty wide. I put soft surf racks on the ends of my rack so I could rest the jets on the rack with the gear tucked up. I don't have any pics right now, I'll see if I can take some when I get home. That will be great. Mike
Offer them in a KD (knocked Down) version and shipping will be cut in half. Same with cost to manufacture.

Flycamone vid inside F16 cockpit...not the best but.. kinda interesting
I was flying my Skymaster 1/6th F-16 with the Flycam inside the cockpit this past Sunday. The cam ran out of batteries mid flight or so - sorry about that. Also on the very next flight my Rhino blew a bearing mid flight. Had to deadstick the bird in. This was my FIRST semi scale warbird deadstick. Thank goodness it happened on the downwind at full throttle instead of at takeoff. Had plenty of speed to land without any problems. Of course Zero room for error. I wish the cam wouldn't have died or I would have had a video of the deadstick. Rats... I had turned it on for that flight but it died before takeoff because there was no vid of that flight at all. Upon inspection it looks like it tried to spit out a bearing. The inner tailcone was penitrated and a bearing is rattling around inside. One actually got out! The damage wasn't caused by FOD. I always use a FOD screen. Sending back to Jet Central. Eric will take care of it. Once I get another turbine in the jet I will make another recording. I think I know how to position the cam better now that I have seen this. I have a spare Rhino on the shelf. I might stick it in and fly again this weekend. Cactus 1549
Have you guys seen this? Incredible documentation of the event. http://www.exosphere3d.com/pubwww/pages/project_gallery/cactus_1549_hudson_river.html "A challenging question arose during preparation of this animation: whether or not to include flames and trails of smoke from the engines. Brief review of the superficial data led us to conclude that there were flames on both engines; some passengers on both the left and right sides reported seeing anything from "flames" to a "fireball and black smoke". The passenger seated in 15F even described feeling heat from the fire on the right side of the aircraft! Many remembered a visible smoke or haze in the cabin and almost all persons onboard recalled a smell of smoke or fire."
