RE: Soft Mounts
Don't forget what workhorses pattern planes are. It is not uncommon for a pattern plane to see hundreds flights in a season. The cumulative effects of this is very apparent.

RE: Oasis (NJ) pattern contest who is going?
I won't have to work the weekend so I can go. Now to get beaten up by two National champs and a World team member. Sal and I are officially off the podium! Weather should be great and looking forward to seeing friends and getting some feedback.

RE: battery size??
I am too heavy handed to solder directly to the connectors without melting them. I had some extra HK balance adapters that worked well. Pull out the wires you don't need then solder to the wire without destroying the connector. Also, pot the pins well with some thick Ca or a tiny bit of epoxy because the will loosen over time. Check this regularly since this is a high use item. [link]http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9922__Female_JST_XH_gt_Male_Thunderpower_5S_5cm_5pcs_bag_.html[/link]

RE: 150 meter rule.
Thanks for the calibration. I always thought those trees were 150m. I will have to check the other directions that we fly in the evenings. It was surprising at the WC to see how close and uncomfortable 150m actually is.

RE: 150 meter rule.
Would love to see this done on the Stormville field. Maybe a circle since we fly in all directions to avoid the sun. Can't seem to get the ruler to work on my iPad.

RE: a123 or life batteries rx and tx
The SD-10 uses a 6 cell nimh battery so a 2 cell lipo works perfectly. There is a big piece of foam in the battery compartment that will give you a lot of room. I bought a 2 cell 1800mah lipo but rarely use it since I get over 2 hours of use from the stock battery. A 2100 or more may fit. An unregulated A123 will work fine fo rx but won't be as consistent or as light as a regulated lipo. For an e powered plane 600 or 800 mah is plenty. If you do go the A123 route keep in mind there voltage drop can be severe at the end of the discharge curve and can bite you.

RE: Backup/Redundant batteries
I used the male half of Futaba extension and spliced it to a balance connector adapter. The Black wire attaches to the pin with the black wire on the balance connector which we'll call pin one, and the red wire then attaches to pin three. Perform a test before you connect it to anything. The output should look exactly like a 2s LiPo. Jim
Just tested this set up last night and it worked well. My only concern is how long do these hold up? I don't have a lot of confidence in those little balance connectors. I have a back up but don't want to test it.

RE: 2 cycle engines for F3A
Harry, Where do you fly? We have a good group of pattern fliers not far away. Most E power but some OS and YS pilots. The OS 1.40 Rx was the best 2c overall. The Webras were good but could be difficult along with the Mintors. The OS 1.60 had a little more guts but was real tough to get the mixture right. Here in D1 we all put thousands of flights on the 1.40rx and now all of us run E power. YS engines are awesome but at some point it will betray you. Only one in this years FAI team trials and every Nats I see at least one being rebuilt in the pits. They are awesome but I prefer flying than fixing. I am very happy with my Neu if I went fuel powered, given the fuel cost I would look very carefully at MTK's work with the OS 33.

RE: field charging lipos
Did the marine battery battery thing for a few years and got tired of only charging one pack @1c at a time. If I had to do it over maybe I would get two so I could have 24v and more capacity. Started with higher c charge rates at the end of last year and haven't looked back. Bought a Honda 2k and am very happy. I also bought a disconnect panel for the house to run my furnace or frig during outages to justify the cost. Built a 24v ps from two HP 600 power supplies and use a fma 10 xp. I fly a lot after work so everything lives in my van and the first thing out of the car is the genie and the chargers. By the time I change my clothes and put the plane together my first pack is ready. I hate listening to the gennie and they are expensive but I don't miss staying up at night babysitting packs and leaving charged packs in my car. Higher c packs really don't like to sit charged very long.

RE: Basic ESC question
What prop are you using? I have over 200 flights on nearly the identical system. With a 20.5 x 14 you should see 6700 rpm for around 90 amps. Something is shorted or connected wrong from the sound of it. Send The ice back to CC and they will get you straight. I have agree please find someone with experience to help review your set up I hate to see someone just chewing up parts. Don't hesitate to call CC or Nue for help.

RE: My suggestion to increase pattern participation
Maybe an easy one would be to post a video of the sportsman sequence on the NSRCA page so those interested can see what it actually looks like. Most I have met who come to a contest "just to see" usually regret not bringing a plane once they saw the sequence being flown. A number of years ago we coached a newly soloed pilot through a primer I was running completely cold. He just showed up that Saturday morning wanting to fly and we walked him through. Another idea would be to create a "club contest" program with a simple sequence and rules. If each NSRCA member could try to run one of these on a Saturday morning at there local club it could have quite an impact. To the OP thanks for the effort always good to get a fresh perspective.

RE: Newbie to Electric Pattern
Look in the batteries and chargers section on RCG. It isn't hard to convert them even to run them in series for 24v. Take your time read all the threads you are poking around some high voltage stuff but it us not impossible.

RE: Experience of using high LiPo charge rates
I have been following this on RCG for the last year and have bee experimenting with some smaller packs. I have two 4s 40c 2650 zippys that have been flown with 50a peaks and charged mostly over 4c. Only 30 flights so far but the packs are running great. Only invested in 2 packs but with 20 minute charges plenty of flying. Started parallel charging my 6s packs and it is great! Charge 3 of these at 2c in 35 minutes and only use one charger. These are Turnigy 20c 2650 cells that are only rated for 2c charge. These are new only eight flights but much better than three hours of charging. Planning on charging my pattern packs as fast as I can this year and not owning as many packs.

RE: Castle Ice HV 80 II
Ran my 30-09 at much higher power levels on an Ice 80hv light with no issues. Internal temps will be very telling. After over 100 flights internal temps started to get high in summer so I switched to a standard 80hv and never thought about it again. For th op do check the motor. I had an Axi 5330 that ran perfect but would eat an esc in very few flights. Had an identical set up in another plane that went for hundreds of flights. Hobby Lobby replaced the motor without every saying why. http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35216 Very helpful

RE: How weight affects YOUR participation at NATS
ORIGINAL: Ryan Smith I fail to understand why people think the weight rule is stupid. Why? Is it stupid because the people saying it is have heavy airplanes? It is what pattern is governed by. Next thing people are going to have trouble keeping their airplanes under 2m, so that rule will be stupid as well. Everybody cheats the sound test, so that rule is dumb as well. I don't mean to be an ass, but really? If you don't want a weight limit, give IMAC a try. Local contests don't really matter in terms of weight. You're only hurting yourself flying heavy stuff. My last though for the night here. Why do people fly pattern? Is it to challenge yourself? To be with friends? To get a trophy? To look cool? Pattern isn't easy. It's not impossible by any stretch of the imagination, but it's meant to be a challenge. If you want a plug and play hobby, this is not the proper outlet. By the time you start flying Intermediate where these rules count, you've had enough time to analyze whether you enjoy pattern or not and want to play by its rules. I hope you don't get discouraged. There are plenty of really good guys in your area that can help you, I'm sure you know. I hope to be able to schedule a trip home around a contest in Mocksville to be able to fly with everyone down there again.
. I generally try to avoid this discussion whenever I can but I agree with Ryan. We only have three real limits and they are pretty clear.

RE: Cellpro 10XP
ORIGINAL: degray Thanks for your post. I'm just converting to electric for next season and need some items including a charger and power supply. I was considering either the CellPro 10xp or the TP 820CD which sells for about a $100 more. I have a question on power supplies. I have a new computer pw supply rated at 850 Watts (60+ Amps.). Does anyone have experience using this type of supply and would you recommend using one? Thanks
I have used several IBM 235 12v power supplies for the last few years with very good results. Recently, just built a new charge box with two hp 600 supplies @24v that really takes advantage of the full potential of the 10xp. Always try to use as many volts as your chargers can handle. Don't have a lot of charges on my XP but so far very happy with it and looking forward to using its 15A output.

RE: Cycling Lipos at Home
I went to the hardware store and bought a female plug and connected it with some heavy wire to a deans. I plug it into a power strip then plug my lipo into a wattmeter and a then to the connector. Add a few incandesant lights a couple of old safely secured soldering irons and I can pull a couple of amps and measure how much is removed. Of course I don't leave the room. A bit simple but works.

4100w with a 21x14. Almost 6900rpm and tons of go with my strongest Rhino4900. The motor gets around 120°F but doesn't care with almost 200 flights on this setup. Sorry I missed you guys yesterday.

RE: Had enough of Glow - need advice on conversion
I have done the same conversion. My Brio is the carbon deluxe kit and was always tail heavy. With the Rx it was always anemic and as a result it didn't get flown much. First, I tried a Himaxx 6330-200 w/an APC 21x14. Good motor but not enough power. Switching to a Falcon 21x14 helped but the best has been a Pletty 30-09 w/the Falcon prop. GREAT power, good brakes and super reliable but very high amp draw motor. With my Rhino 4900 I can see over 4000w but the power is great and I have never liked the plane more. With my Zippy 15c 5000mah I can make weight but the power is less and it is pushing the batteries pretty hard. Although, they are holding up to the task. Maybe you could do a 6330-210 w/ a Falcon 20.5x14.5 but that is speculation on my part. A friend has that set up in a Sickle and it works well but his plane is much lighter/cleaner than my Brio. The HV85 is perfect and you will be able to switch to a smaller rx battery. I have a few 2s 500mah and swap every three or four flights. You will need to switch landing gear to something taller. I have been using the ES e-gear but they never seem to last and I am running out of inventory. I have a set of the PT gear on order from F3A unlimited since they are about the same weight and appear to have no sweep. Hopefully, they will last. The small canopy is a pain since my batteries wound up a few inches over where the stock firewall was. I had to trim the inside lip of the fuse after it started to crack from stuffing my hands all the way in there to change packs. I put a vertical piece of honeycomb under the floor from the existing firewall to the gear plate for reinforcement and then strapped batteries to the floor. The ESC lives on the under side with a little piece of depron to push some air over it. I kept the leads long on everything and plug the packs in from the back to avoid having to try to plug in a Deans that I can't see. This plane may get converted to a Neu to get similiar power w/ less amp draw. I have another plane in the works w/a Neu and waiting to see how that goes but right now this is my favorite. Having played with A123 for a few years in my Vanquish I am ready to sell all I have for the better power to weight of lipos. Good luck,
