RE: Extreme Flight 88
ORIGINAL: phatg0nk Hello Everyone! I would like to start off saying im new to this thread but have read a good bit of it. If some of these questions were covered in other threads forgive me. Okay , this is my first gas plane period..Ef Yak 54 -88'' The Arf went together very well so far, and i am very pleased with the quality, and was happy to see unlike the instructions said mine came with wheels and axels as well. I may ask several in particuliar questions during this but my biggest question is asking for feedback onmy approach as a whole. so here is what i have purchased so far. 1. DLE-55 '' I am on a somewhat limited-budget -not really wanting to discuss engine choice'' 2. Hitec 7955Tg servos for all control surfaces- Can i use stock control arms relaibly '' i know i need 4'' offset arm''for pull pull 3. Throttle servo.. have not purchased how skimpy can i go here . do i need high speed for throttle response. 4. Fromeco Extreme geniune A-123 cell 2300mah battery with 2 Fromeco Badger switches< one for Rx and 1 for ignition. 5. New Radio -Hitec aurora w/ 7 channel reciever -is channels enough? 6 I also purchased plenty of hd twisted Extensions I Do want to Simplify my Set-up as much as possible, to elminate points of failure and user error'' Im so nervous setting it up, and dont want to overlook somthing. ALL in ALL - I was looking into a 4.8 seperate battery for ignition and using my one A-123 2300mah battery for rx, or buying another A-123 and running duels on rx.. IF i were to go that route should i just use regulator for igntion Note my dle ignition specifies no more than 5 volts or damage will be done Also read somthing interesting somewhere that there were a few guys running there ignition for DLE's off the balancing tab of A-123s Do you guys think there is a clear cut answer for any of this .. one 2300mah for rc? duel batteries for rx? if duels should i use regulator and skip the seperate battery for ign and shar one of the 2-2300 packs going to rx .or was my original plan of seperate nicad4.8v battery on ignition and one a-123 2300 on Rx sound the most practical Last question As far as choke- Is manual with no servo Viable? - As far as DLE-55, stock muffler vrs pipe..Night and day difference>? or not enough to justify 300 dollars off the get go Please Remember , Im trying to keep it simple but by no means put myself in danger by doing somthing not worth the saving a point of failure/weight/redunancy thank you guys
First off, GREAT choice for your 1st gasser! You will love it. To help answer some of your questions: 1) DLE55 on stock muffler-> You will not regret it. IMHO, it is the best value on the market right now. 2) 7955's -> I have had great luck with mine. No issues at all running A123's. Even though they are not labeled as HV, Hitec says that you can go unregulated 2S lipo on them. Do yourself a favor & get some good 1.5" aluminum servo arms. SWB is the gold standard. I really like the Spot On/Secraft arms. 3) Throttle servo -> You will get answers all over the board on this one. The consensus seems to be "metal gear w/ decent speed". I agree with the consensus, but have to admit that I (personally) have had a standard nylon gear Hitec on the throttle of my 88" Yak for a few years now and well over 400 flights. 4) Battery setup -> Your call. To many variables & personal preferences. I love & use A123's. On my 88" Yak ignition, I have a separate 4.8v NiMh, but on my 35%er I run dual A123's to the rx, and pull ignition power off a second lead on one of the rx batteries. Just be sure to use a diode or regulator to get your ignition voltage down around 5-5.5ish volts. I don't use an IBEC & don't really trust them (just my personal opinion). I don't like my ignition power running through the rx before it makes it to the engine. 5) 7 ch is just fine. 6) Manual choke -> perfect. Hope this helps. Evaluate the info that everyone provides, but in the end be sure that you make your own decisions based on what makes YOU comfortable. Take your time on the build/setup and you will be rewarded with a great flying plane that will last many, many years. I recently pulled mine out of the trailer for the 1st time in long while. I had almost forgot how much I liked it! So smooth, precise, nimble, etc. You will love it.

RE: Extreme Flight 88
ORIGINAL: Slow and Steady Any thoughts on prop size for the EF Yak with DLE 55 and stock muffler. I am currently using a Vess 22 B, but I'm thinking about the 23 B. The 22 B turns at 7,200 RPM restrained on the ground. DLE's manual rates the engine at 5.5 HP at 7,500 RPM, if that has any bearing. Vertical appears unlimited but slow.
I go back & forth between the 23B and 23A. Depends on my mood. Most of the time, I like the 23B best...it seems to have a little better "bite" & vertical pull. Both the 23A & 23B are good choices and both are WAY better than the 22A & B, IMHO.

RE: Extreme Flight 88
Last time I was out flying the Yak (a few weeks ago), I heard a weird noise as I was pulling into a low hover. I landed immediately and discovered that the spinner and prop bolts were loose! Oops. I guess that I've been having so much fun flying the snot out of this plane that I have neglected those "maintenance" items like checking bolts periodically [sm=red_smile.gif] I then realized that it has been about 75 flights since I really did any kind of airframe inspection/maintenance at all...and they were pretty hard flights, too! Lots of hard tumbles & KE spins [:D] So in light of this discovery, I decided that I had better pull the cowl, stabs, etc. and give everything a good once over. I did & everything looks looks good with one exception...the cowl mounting tabs were coming unglued. The top ones were VERY loose and the glue joints were letting go on both the front & back sides (see pics) but a quick shot of CA has everything back in business. Just thought I would share in case you guys needed a reminder to check things out occasionally. Also, while I have it "in maintenance" I decided to try out Charles' suggestion...2" arms on the elevators (using the 1.75" hole). I went with the Secraft arms (see pic). I still have to re-program my servos, but initial results look promising! I was getting ~ 43* on the original 1.5" arms...looks like I will get ~ 52* with the new ones. I'm looking forward to trying it out in the air this weekend!

RE: Extreme Flight 88
I would think that if the fuse is crooked/twisted/warped, the rudder/vertical stabilizer would be square with the horizontal stabs, but would not be square in relation to the wings. If it were a misaligned tube, it would be the other way around...the vertical stab/rudder would not be square to the horizontal stabs, but would be square in relation to the wings. Thanks. I run a single 2300mah A123 through a Fromeco Kodiak switch to power the rx (AR9000) and a 4.8v NiMH (~2000mah) on the ignition. No regs, PE's, etc. Just the basics. I do run an optical ignition kill. Other light weight goodies include: Kevan tires (the cheap ones) Titanium axles CF spinner No spats or gear cuffs/fairings
ORIGINAL: JoeAirPort Yeah the last picture the plane is going straight and all the surfaces are fully deflected. How do you do that Jeff?
Hey, Joe! Great video! I like all the effects & transitions. Very cool. I need to learn how to do some of that video editing stuff. Now, I'll have to wait a while before posting some video of mine...'cause it will look silly with yours fresh on the mind [:)] Now, on to your question about that picture...It's a magic flight condition/radio program that I am working on called "ignr-physx". [:-] I have it programmed on my aux2 switch. Basically, the plane thinks that it is flying in a vacuum & you can move the surfaces all you want without altering course. [:-][:-][:-] [:D] Seriously though, it is just a fast shutter speed taking multiple shots though various maneuvers. We just got lucky with the timing on that one. [:)]
I have no problems with the outer hole locations. What prop are you running? I have found that different props can have a huge effect on the plane's response & controll surface effectiveness in high alpha/post stall attitudes. Also, some props seem (to me) to "create" a torque roll effect, and others almost seem to "prevent" TR's. Just a thought. In case it helps - I currently run a Vess 23B and I have zero trouble stopping a TR. If anything, it is sometimes difficult to start the TR without using ailerons to coax it along. My surfaces are quite responsive in hover/harrier/etc. That is using the outer holes on the conrtol horns & getting 35 degrees of aileron throw & 44 degrees on the elevators.

RE: Extreme Flight 88
Personally, I haven't run any Futaba servos bigger than their standard size sport models, so I can't comment on how their better offerings compare to the 7955, but... The gears are very nice in the 7955. Mine have no noticeable play at all. My rudder "jitters" were only @ neutral AND only occasionally. Probably because I have the deadband set to the lowest setting (zero, I think?), and it would periodically jitter while trying to hold a perfect center. Personally, I would go w/ the 7955 & forget about the tray...it's nice, but just not needed in this application. Oh yeah, and a patch of velcro for good measure [:)] BTW - I have just over 100 flights on my Yak (7955's all around) and the servos are every bit as tight as they were on day one. This includes numerous tail-touches, which aren't exactly "rudder/servo friendly" [:-]

RE: Extreme Flight 88
ORIGINAL: House2twist So, I've been having some vibration issues on my Yak recently. I've lost 2 sets of cowl screws and a full set of servo screws (from my choke servo) over the past 5 flights. The cowl screws are mounted using the rubber bonded sealing washers and the servo screws are mounted properly. I can't figure out why they keep falling out. My prop is balanced, engine is mounted well. I'm thinking maybe the needle settings are causing vibration? I'm only at my 2nd gallon of break in fuel. Any suggestions?
Like Mr. Airport said, sounds like it's time to tweak the needles. Also, don't forget about balancing the spinner (if you run one) and don't just do a lateral balance on the prop...balance the hub, too (descriptions/video floating around somewhere). A combination of all of those suggestions should help to keep all of your hardware on board :)

RE: Extreme Flight 88
ORIGINAL: JoeAirPort Knocking out two posts in one, I got my Wingtote wing bag today. Wow is it nice. I was worried that the wing tube wouldn't fit until I realized there are two long skinny pockets, one on each side. One is longer than the other. Well the longer one fits with room to spare. These are sweet wing bags. PS: If you look closely you can see the wing tube pocket at the bottom of the wing bag.
Joe - that bag looks awesome! So, can you just slide the wings in from the top (handle side)...without having to open them all the way up & take up an entire table, like I have to with the hobby-pak ones? If the divider is semi-rigid & thick enough, I would think that you could. I haven't ordered my new bag yet, but your pics have me wanting to click the "buy" button. Thanks for the post! -Jeff

Joe, that's exactly how mine is set up & it has been going strong for over a year as well. I wonder if they got a "bad batch" with loose set screws or soft threads? It seems weird to have two guys experience the exact same failure within weeks of each other...and I don't recall ever hearing of this before Dave's occurrence [sm=confused.gif] Or, maybe I just never paid attention [:)]

RE: Extreme Flight 88
Thanks for the responses guys. Joe, I've also had the hobby-pack bags in the past. They protect just fine, but I found them very cumbersome to use at the field...taking up an entire table to unzip, fold open, unstrap the wings, dig the tube out, etc. I like the fact that the TBM bags work similar to the EF bubble wrap bags, opening from the root end & allowing you to slide the wings in & out without having to unzip 3 sides of the bag. Personally, I think I'd rather get the Wingtotebags through Tower (along with their prop tote bag thingy) and avoid the hassle of dealing with TBM. So, the real question is: do the wingtote bags "work" more like the TBM bags, or more like the hobby-pack bags?

RE: Extreme Flight 88
Does anyone have experience with Wingtote wing bags? I'm looking to replace the stock silver EF bags...they've worked great for ~ 100 flights, but are starting to get worn where the servo linkages ride. I have a set of TBM bags (for the 33% SD Yak that I stole from Dave [;)]) and they are nice, no complaints at all. But, I'm thinking of picking up a Wingtote brand prop tote, and figured I might as well throw a wing bag in with the order. So, can anyone compare the Wingtote bags to the TBM red/black bags...especially for the 88" Yak? Also, which size should I consider getting? I think I've heard that there is a "new version" of wingtotes in the works...anyone have insight?

RE: Extreme Flight 88
That's almost exactly what I experienced going from the Vess 23A to the 23B. ~ 150 rpm drop, with a little more top end speed & more "bite" when jumping out of a hover. After trying a number of different props/sizes/styles, I really thought that the "A" was perfect...until I tried the "B". Sold the "A" to another guy at the field that same day after only 2 flights on the "B" & I haven't looked back [:)] Have fun @ the Fly Low In this weekend...I won't make it this year, but I'll see you @ the Tyler event on the 19th.
