RE: How Many Planes Do You Take To The Field?
I have a trailor that holds several giant scale aircraft and several more standard and foamies. All together, I might bring 7 or 8 planes.

RE: LANDING BEFORE EMPTY ?
Timers are a good idea. Often the pilot will experience a compressed or distorted sense of time while flying. So its very difficult to judge 10 or 15 minutes. And waiting until the engine coughs is a bad idea. By then, there might be someone on the field. Its better to call the runway and land with enough fuel remaining to delay for 1 minute, especially at larger events. However, your deadsticks are great training. You can still simulate them from time to time. Just randomly cut power and pretend the engine has failed. Its not 100% realistic. Airplanes actually glide better when the engine is dead rather than at an idle. But its close enough for practice. Landing with the engine running does take a more sophisticated technique. You aren't simply controlling your energy with elevator and your path. You will use your throttle to control your rate of descent . You will use your elevator to control speed. So once the airplane has been slowed down, the elevator input changes very little, almost none at all. At that point you are controlling the "sink rate" with throttle. If it looks like you will be short, add a small about of power. It might just be a momentary increase of power and then return to idle. But the adjustment is made with throttle and not elevator. The elevator is used again when you are flairing to land. At this point you are inches from touching your wheels to the ground. Power is completely off. You are trying to hold the airplane off the ground as long as possible and you gradually squeeze in more and more up elevator. Then, Errrk, you've landed. Some heavier airplanes will actually require that you carry a click or two of power all the way until touch down. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

RE: who needs a club
ORIGINAL: handyman with all the great park flyers out there who really needs a club,...sure do miss the fun police, than theres the know it all crew, that makes the day go by really fast, how about the few that make up rules as thing go from one day to the next, and let us not for get the board members, one did tell them its really there club, and last but not least DUES,but dont for get if you want a hot dog or a soda at a meeting it will cost you, god knows theres 12.000.00 in the bank doing nothing other than making 5.35 per yr in instest ...........so park flyers really dont look bad at all, hell your taxs pay for the parks so USE THEM.....................
The solution is dilution. The key to a good club is keeping the proper ratio of real pilots to the joker pilots . (ie. fun police, know it alls, rule commities, etc). That way the quacks get drowned out and ignored. THIS POST IS NOT ABOUT ANY PERSONS ON RCU !!!! DO NOT INTERJECT YOURSELF INTO THIS CONVERSATION AND PRETEND TO BE A VICTIM OF AN INACCURATE POST ABOUT YOU!!!

RE: Remembering Carl Goldberg Models
I was going to school and I was writing a research paper. I had a stack of NASA tech-briefs which I was using for research. And I came across an article about Carl Goldberg. Hmm. NASA tech-briefs had articles about just about any leading edge development in engineering you could imagine. And some of it did pertain to aviation. As did the Carl Goldberg article. The USAF had used a flying stab on a high altittude research vehicle and were using it like a de-thermalizer. The thing popped up vertical and the plane would decend almost straight down. High rate of decent, but completely controlled. Its was pretty cool. And of course they went way to far into the math and science . They did credit Carl with the design idea. And they explained his background and the original use of de-thermalizers.

RE: club info
We just mentioned discussing dropping the paper news letter for an electronic one and one of our older, "Burke Society" type loons went haywire. You wouldn't believe the string of disassociated rationals he had why this couldn't be done. But here is the rub. This guy volunteers for everything and runs for some office every year. But he is such a wack job that nobody trust him. He complains constantly and volunteers constantly. But we all know he would drive the bus off a cliff if given a chance. What do you do with one of these guys ?

RE: nylon gear bolts
We use nylon bolts because they don't tend to vibrate loose. And its better for the radio to have less metal objects nearby. The force needed to sheer nylon bolts is still enough to damage your airplane. That is not why we use them.

RE: AMA FEE INCREASE 2011
ORIGINAL: ArcticCatRider I can't expect to have a model airplane flying field and pay nothing for it. It's not an entitlement.
But if you play soccer, expect a free field. If you play softball, expect a free field. If you play baseball or T-ball, expect a free field. If you have a pro team, expect neighborhoods to be condemned, destroyed, expect a free stadium. If your airline is expanding, expect neighborhoods to be condemned , destroyed, expect the city to build you a bigger airport. But for God's sake, don't ever expect anyone to build your RC field for you ? This is complete bunk. Cities do build RC airplane fields, Counties do build RC fields. But you must attend meetings and lobby for what is rightly due . You paid for their fields, stadiums, and airports. Its time that they help pay for yours.

RE: My Odds Of Shot Down With F M Radio
ORIGINAL: ES CONTROL I Am flying for 4 years with a fm radio . and I never was shot down. Now I Am about to buy another. What is my risk staying with FM?
Based on the fact that you are even asking such a question implies that you are not using any type of frequency control where you fly. So the answer would be that the risk is deminishing with time as other pilots switch to 2.4.

RE: ENGINE SIZE
ORIGINAL: JohnBuckner While it may fly the airplane it is most certainly going to disappoint you and keep in mind underpowered airplanes are more difficult to fly and will require proportionatly greater skills. This fact alone tends to shorten the lifespan of the airplane. John
This is precisely why some people prefer the smaller engine, to enhance the realism . Going small on the engine is an aquired taste, but very, very rewarding.
