RE: RealFlight G4 Coming
To me it just isnt going to be worth it until they have a new engine out that will allow way more polys and take advantage of 4+ core cpus. Can you imagine how much better the physics could be if they did that :)? But ya, I'm gonna wait for a new engine.

RE: Planning first build
I priced the florist foam when I first started thinking about this. Way out of my range. White foam however, I can get for free. I know white foam is harder to carve.. I've done it before for small things using knives heated over a candle. For something this large I was planning on building something like a small hand held hotwire cutter and carve the rough shape from it. Then clean it up with a heated knife before spackling. Epoxy wont attack white foam will it?

Planning first build
Hey all, I'm thinking about trying a build from mostly fiberglass. The subject is an old Nazi design that never made it into the air. Span, 80" Length 86" 50cc [link=http://www.luft46.com/henschel/hsp75big.gif]4 view (link)[/link] Correct me if any of what I say sounds like a bad idea, but heres what I was planning... First, carve down pieces of foam into the shape of the airframe, cover the foam with spackling and sand smooth. wrap the styrofoam forms in saran wrap and lay the wetted out fiberglass over 1/2 the form. Then after its cured, do the same for the other 1/2 of the form. After both are cured, I'll glue a very minimal balsa and ply structure inside the forms. Then join the halves together. The pics should explain it a little better. To vacuum bag the parts I plan to build a box with a pegboard top and hook a Shop Vac up to it... Something like an air hockey table in reverse. Ok, questions, what weights of cloth and how many layers of each should I use? Will a Shop-Vac be strong enough to vacuum bag? Or should I forget about bagging the parts? And it theres anything thats sounds wrong please let me know. Thanks

RE: WING TIP EXTENSION HELP
I'd do something like this. I think its along the lines of what BMathews was suggesting. The rods give it strength and the hardwood tab keep the wing attached. If it were me, I'd probably put a blind nut in there and just use a regular nylon wing bolt. Clean and simple.

RE: Where to find retracts?
Ya, I'm trying to stay away from getting custom made retracts. My savings account hurts just thinking about it :). I've got access to a really nice machine shop here at college, I may try building my own. A man in my club made a set of retracts for his OV-10, so I can probably get some ideas from him. I'm hoping that I can buy the air mechanism by itself and build everything else. Just an interesting side note, I'm going to try building this one from molded fiberglass. And I don't feel like paying a couple hundred dollars for foam, so, I've been going around to all the businesses in town asking if they have any large scrap pieces of styrofoam. Let me tell you, that question will get you some strange looks [:D]

Where to find retracts?
Planing on starting another build in the next couple months. I'm having trouble finding retracts that fit the dimensions though. The plane is a bit unusual, since the vertical stab is underneath the plane, the gear has to have REALLY long struts. The gear also retract forward on this plane. I'm going to give it an 80" wingspan. This mean to be true scale it would need gear 13.5" long from axle to pivot. Anyone know of anything that fits the specs? If not, how hard is it to lengthen store bought retracts? Thanks

Been a while... Well, I brought the plane up to the college with me. The college has a great shop and I was able to knock out some difficult bits pretty fast. No camera with me but I may get some next time I'm at home.

RE: In search of prop.
ORIGINAL: Deadeye The prop will cavitate on it's own prop wash. Air molecules will not be able to fill the void fast enough. It's just too much turbulence.
This is what I've always heard as well. The prop doesn't travel forward far enough to get the next blade into "clean" air. However I have seen plenty of scale warbirds fly just fine on 4 bladed props.

RE: What dictates prop diameter?
The larger the diameter, the more thrust is produced....to a point. When it gets to large it will over prop the engine and give you less.. General rule is lose an "inch of pitch gain an inch diameter - lose an inch of diameter gain an inch of pitch". Small diameter and high pitch - little thrust high top speed Large diameter and low pitch - lots of thrust and less speed
