RE: Saito FG-20
Darcy: Dont you think it is dangerous to pressurize the gas tank? Gasoline is much more flammable than methanol. Maybe if you put a flame arrestor in the line… For instance, a metal fuel filter between the muffler and the tank. I was just wondering… Leonardo

Captain2: I have had several dead sticks until I read in one of these threads, that the low speed needle of the FG14 and FG20 must be very rich. Once I did that, no more flame outs.

RE: KMP / YT FW-190 Build Thread
Guys, my plane is almost ready. But I’ll need to put some weight in front to balance the Center of Gravity. I’m using a DLE-30 engine and I was thinking on fixing some lead plates on the mounting bolts that fix the engine to the stands. Something like a half moon of steel and lead. Does someone have already tried this arrangement? Is this a crazy idea? Waiting to hearing from you, Arruda

RE: Regarding SP series engines, props and airspeed...
Michael: Unfortunately I have no records of the RPM I got (this was 3 years ago), but as far as I remember it wasn’t much different than the RPM I used to get with the APC 3 blade prop (15.75 x 13). I hit a tree with my plane and since then the engine is stored for a future use. I think you need at least 12 in of pitch to make this Mustang fly. Arruda

Per my calculations 3 in is too small and 4.5 in is too big. The correct scale spinner should be around 3.5in (90mm). Any way, I also bought the SD spinner and will use it. The other alternative is to make a custom one ($$$).

RE: Saito - Pro FG 14 Tips and tricks only!!!
Hi All, I have a FG-14 engine with 4 liters (a little more than one gallon) of gas running through it. This is my first and only gas engine. Although the engine runs great, it seems that it doesn’t have any compression at all. I have several other four stroke glow engines with much more running time and they all have excellent compression. In my FG-14, I can turn the prop with my fingers and it is like the spark plug was removed. As I said before, the engine has good idle, good transition and good high speed (about 9000 rpm on a 13 x 8 propeller). This is intriguing for me. Is this normal for any gas engine? Or, is this normal for 4 strokes gas engines? Or, is this normal for SAITO four stroke gas engines?

RE: NEW DLE30!
Hi all ! I am new to this thread and recently bought a DLE-30 engine. I was considering using AVGAS on it - just because it has no ethanol. But some people in my club told me not to use AVGAS because the presence of lead would corrode the carburetor. Personally I think this is an “urban myth”. If lead corrodes or clogs any orifice then it would no be used on real aircraft. Does anyone knows something about this?

I use mine on a RV-8 (HANGAR 9)and it’s a perfect match. It took mesome time (and 2 dead sticks) to learn how to tune it, but now it is workingflawlessly. To keep theweight low I’m using a small tank ( 6 oz - sufficient for 20min flights) and only one batteryfor radio and ignition (2100 mA LiPo - coupled with a WIKE RC battery eliminatingfilter). So far this combo is working very well.

It didn’t resistthe methanol for long and the needle screwed in with vibration, leaning themixture until the engine stopped. The new oneI bought from RCV is doing better (knock in the wood). As per themuffler, there is no simple solution. Some peoplehave good results replacing it with an OS muffler, that has a welded tip. I tried theOS muffler but, in my case, the pressure nipple came off with the highertemperature of the engine. The result was a flame out in the air! After thatI bought a custom muffler from Weston UK but didn’t try it yet (no planefor this engine at the moment). I knowKeleo Creations have a nice muffler for your engine. Mysuggestion is: use the original muffler on the bench until the tip came off. Thenreplace it with one of these aftermarkets. Never fly with the original muffler.

RE: improved vibration
Bugerdup: Thank you once again. Have you already flown this setup? I had problems with both the RCV and OS mufflers (the RCV looses the tip and the OS looses the pressure tap). If the Keleo muffler resists the vibration and high temperatures involved it will be a success.

RE: NEW H9 P51 Mustang 60 ARF
Gentlemen: I intend to buy this “Blue Nose” P-51, but I would like to hear more about its landing gear. Other H9 planes are blamed for having a week landing gear. I have a P-47 and a P-40 and had to replace both landing gears. My P-47 taxied like a walking duck and the wire struts bended even in soft landings. I replaced them with FTE gear with 3/16 wires. No more probems! On my P-40 (after waiting for 6 month for a Lado retracts) I replaced them with Century Jet retracts, that doubled the cost of the plane (!!!). Certainly the 5/32 wires are not strong enough to resist a 9 ~ 10 lb plane. After reading all this thread I could not find many references on the retracts. So I would like to ask you guys, with flying experience with this plane, how the retracts of this P-51 behave before investing in this kit. Thank you for your help. Leonardo

RE: improved vibration
Thank you Burgerdup. I have a 90 sp and it took 2,5 galons to get a consistent idle and transition. The vibrations will never go away, but it is possible to live with it. I just reinforce the firewall and the junction between the wing and fuselage.
