RE: Tank Reference Books
ORIGINAL: Pzjgr When I go to that site and try to find pictures there is noting there.
It looks like he's removed them or (hopefully) he's reorganizing them. That page layout doesn't look like it used to so maybe it's just being updated. It'll be a shame if he's taken all the images offline.

I happen to work for Ohio State but I've never been a Brutus fan... I do cheer when we beat you guys though! ;-)

RE: Research difficulties -sPzAbt. 505
ORIGINAL: 0z one more....
Thanks for the two photographs, Oz. The one I found is a slightly different angle than this one you posted. Your's has better resolution but it looks like the scan lines may have obscured if there really is zimmerite but I'm leaning toward it not being present on this particular tank when I compare the two. That'd be nice because I'm not so fond of the zimmerite look and would prefer to stay clear of it if possible and still be (psuedo)historic. I'm not just not patient enough to be as exacting as some of the really talented tankers around here. They do great work but I'd be pulling what little hair I have left out of my head to try and keep up with them! :-)

RE: Research difficulties -sPzAbt. 505
ORIGINAL: Panther G It's rare to see one on a Tiger I. The Charging Knight was more predominant on the KT's. The TigerI's that did have it were all late models I believe. Tiger 311 of the 3rd Schwere company did have it. It is a late Tiger I. The numbers were painted on the gun barrel at the thickest part before the manlet. Black numbers on a yellow background. It also had full Zimmerite. No Balkankruz on the sides and 311 in black on the back of the Rommelkist. (turret stowage bin)
Rare in that there aren't more than a few pictures of the 505 from early 1944 showing the symbol, I'd agree. However, several sources indicate the Knight-on-charger symbol was chosen in early '44 but also document that the battalion did not get its Tiger II's till September '44. This works out fairly well for me I think. It's interesting that a reference book I came across shows tank 300 from the 505 and it appears to be painted tan with a dark brown or black barrel. It also doesn't appear to have any Zimmerit at all, but has is a Late model (image attached.. I hope!) So far, further research has produced some info crews from 505: - Lt Horst Krönke - axishistory.com's forum has a photo of he and Wilhelm Knauth atop Knauth's tank (at the time of the photo, probably summer 1943/Kursk I'd guess, it's an Early model Tiger based on the cuploa). It refers to Krönke as the 505's Adjutant. Elsewhere I also learned he served for some time in the 503 and was still alive as of 2006. - ?? Wilhelm Knauth - I'm unclear on his 1943-44 rank, but I'm going to suspect it was (Ober)Leutnant since it appears his final rank was Hauptmann though it also appears he was reassigned to II.Abt. / Pz.Rgt.Brb. (I.Abt.) before he was killed in April 1945. From what I've found he's been credited with 68 kills. - Oblt Karl Mausberg - one site listing Panzer aces credits him with 50 kills. I believe that tank 311 you've referenced (I've seen color drawings of it online) is -probably- Knauth's tank as I've found references that he was the commander of 3. kompanie / 505 in 1943. It seems likely that he remained with 3. kompanie until his promotion to Hauptmann and then was transferred to II.Abt. / Pz.Rgt.Brb. (I.Abt.) where his experience could be better utilized. Then again I could well be wrong on all of this, lol! I'm hoping to find more details on Mausberg or Krönke. I find it interesting - but perhaps not unusual - that in all of the references to battalion assignment there are never references to tank numbers. My dilemma now is that I have a Early Production Tiger to begin with. My Minister of Funds has informed me the Refitting Budget is running on 'fumes' for the moment. ;-) I'm thinking that I may just leave my tiger in its factory paint till I can afford the upgrade parts. The alternative is to make her up as a 505 tank and ignore the less factual aspects pending her trip back for refitting with proper cuploa/road wheels/etc. I could live with either option, I just need to narrow down a specific tank first.

Research difficulties -sPzAbt. 505
Since I got my HL Tiger 1 about two months ago, I've been thinking about how I'm going to paint her up and which unit and tank I want her to represent. I've currently decided on making her a tank from sPzAbt 505, partly because I like their company symbol of the knight-on-charger. Given that they started using that symbol on their Tiger 1's in early 1944, it seems like a good match. However, I am striking out on finding any details about the 505's Tiger 1's despite having 4 books on Tigers. I have a list of the 505's commanders and the various campaigns but can't find anything out there on the individual tanks or crews. I'd -prefer- to try and recreate a specific tank over making it just "resemble" a 505 Tiger. Does anyone have a suggestion where else to look for more information about specific tanks (in any battalion even, I'm willing to reconsider not using the 505). Thanks much,

Other sources for fixed HL Tiger 1 mantle and barrel?
I see that MatoMart sells a corrected mantle and proper length barrel combo for the HL Tiger 1: [link]https://matomart.com/prodview.php?p=472[/link] It addresses two issues I need to tackle on my Tiger for a price that seems competitive with my own time and labor to do all the cutting and fitting manually but I haven't seen that combo on any other site. Does anyone know of sources in the US or am I better off doing this work by hand? Thanks,

Asiatam Tiger support brace + track tensioners?
I'm pretty sure I'm not the first to ask this but came up empty on a search so I apologize if I'm repeating other posts. Are there any modifications needed to the Asiatam support braces for the HL Tiger in order to also use their track tensioners? In looking at pictures of the tensioners as installed, it isn't clear to me whether the support braces extend far enough back that they'd need to be modified. Did Asiatam take this into consideration when making them and fabricate the braces accordingly already?. I do expect there is some likely hull cutting involved to remove the stock rear idler mountings regardless just wonder about the braces themselves. Also I have to wonder - if I'm running metal sprockets and idlers with metal tracks - are the tensioners going to be of real benefit?

RE: Tank Reference Books
This isn't a book, but as they say about pictures..... for me this site is a gold mine of photos that cover a broad spectrum of armor. http://community.webshots.com/user/jtrowbridge5 I particularly like the 'Tiger 1 Added Items' folder of non-standard modifications or additions to Tigers that crews made, even some of field repairs for armor.

RE: HL Charging questions
ORIGINAL: NitroAssassin you could use it, i've been using all kinds of charging methods for 20+ years and i've never blown a pack from different chargers ( just don't do this for LiPo batteries).. The main thing with charging batteries is heat.. When they start to become a little warm to touch they're done.. It's the overheating of the cells that will kill them.. As long as you don't let them get hot, you'll be fine... The stock 2000mah battery that comes with the HL tanks are NiCads anyways...
Thanks for the confirmation on methods Nitro. I do recall about heat which is why I'd prefer to use a peak charger to squeeze the most out of the pack without overcharging. The pack I have actually says it is a 2000mah NI-MH, which is why it raised a flag of concern. :)

HL Charging questions
I've received my first HL Tiger 1 fresh from "Requisitions", and it's taking my home and place of work by storm. However, I've got a question on charging the battery pack. I'm coming into RC Tanks as an old-school 1:10 offroader at heart where 15min peak chargers were the flavor of the day. The stock pack in my Tiger is a 2000mah NiMH pack while all my old 1:10 packs are/were NiCad. I don't really know anything about NIMH for RC, just for its past use in laptops. Does anyone know if a linear peak charger (Tekin BC100L, yeah it's old but it's still kicking) for NiCad would work with the NIMH packs? I'd love to use it if it's safe but the last thing I want to do is nuke a pack because I charged it improperly. Thanks! -A

RE: Unit Insignia
ORIGINAL: SoulAssassin How about this one? Its from the Capt. Schultz Tiger Ace from the game Company of Heroes. [image]http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc223/QuiuboLoco/SchultzTiger23.png[/image]
That's a great idea from a fun/great game - but something that comes to mind for any suggestions that are from other commercial work(s) if this is to be put on the cover a book to be sold for profit then using someone else's artwork would probably require it to be licensed.. or there could be after the fact legal issues which no one wants to deal with. It'd need to be a non-copyrighted/public domain image to be safest I'd guess. But I'm also not an attorney, this is just my .02 worth. ;-) -A

RE: VsTank R Micro RC Tanks
ORIGINAL: XxDrAg0nxX Hi guys, anyone encountered a problem where one of the tracks stops rotating? Anything I should look out for to identify what is the cause of it?
I've got two of these little guys myself. The only times I've had trouble really was when tracks slip on the sprockets. Usually hair or dust or 'gunk' buildup. In my case the solution was to replace the track with a new one. Also, being rubber bands, they sometimes get too worn and loose and things start slipping that way too. There isn't a whole lot in them to go wrong but they're awfully small to work with. Are the gears turning properly? Has the sprocket come loose from the axle so it's just free wheeling and not driving the track? Good luck! -A

RE: What other RC do you guys run?
ORIGINAL: rclaw Besides tanks, I have two FE boats, a BJ26 cat, and a 32" FE cat. Also, had a Traxxas Revo nitro truck, but sold it for more tanks. [;)]
I'm still 'new' with my ordered HL Tiger 1 on the way, but I cut my teeth in the late 80's/early 90's on Tamiya buggies and trucks. Everything I still have is massively old school compared to what's out now but hey it runs and it still runs fast enough for me :) I've got a mostly stock Blackfoot (oh for the days of "cheap" Thorp ball diffs and motor mounts), stock Tamiya fwd onroad chassis (with New Beetle body), stock Traxxas Blue Eagle (where stock pretty much = race ready for them back in the day), and two Associated RC12e 12th scale on road chassis. My neighborhood isn't really conducive to bombing my trucks around which is what has led me to enter the realm of being a fresh recruit into RC Tanker school. :) -A
