RE: MK Thunderbird Mark II or III or ?
ORIGINAL: flywilly Hi Bryan, Ya, 320cc will barely allow decent flight time on a good 45/46 size engine these days![:)] I have wondered, myself, if the Thunderbird was Kato's first pattern design; I think yes. I have a Thunderbird 40 kit - yes they are relatively rare. I bet the gentleman in Korea (who has 2 MK kits on ebay right now) might have one. -Will
Will, I think it just might be as well. The plans are old style blue prints from hand drawn plans. Kinda neat. It would be interesting to see a MKI version. Bryan, Can't wait to see the build thread on your "MKIII" I know you have a lot of work to deal with as it seems to be with a few others in here, but we'll be anticipating the start. AWESOME job on you CAD plans too. A jig to build with would be nice..... hint :) DM

RE: Engine trouble shooting?
Same story..same guy, Sumair. Sumair bought my Used but never flown 14mz w/o rec. or modules. Then complained that it didn't come w/ a module and that it was dusty.... The first run of 14mz had a LCD that worked best w/ the stylus than your finger, so with the fact that he couldn't use his module from his 9zap and he didn't like the older version of the LCD, he claimed it to ebay and paypal as "not as discribed and Broken". Paypal is now putting together Felony charges on him for fruadulant representation of the items to get back his $1350, which he did and never surrendered the transmitter. I believe the guy with the engine faced a simular account, especially since the poor guy had to go so far as to contact Sumair's club presedent. Good For You, good job! DM

RE: 14mz spektrum module setup
ORIGINAL: Bax What you are seeing is normal. 1) When you use a non-Futaba module in the 14MZ, you will get the warning that no module is attached because the non-Futaba module is not using the regular Futaba signal output, so the transmitter will not sense that any kind of module is present. 2) You can change modulation from PCM to PPM (or vice-versa) only when the regular FM transmitter module is installed on the transmitter. If you do not have the module installed, you will not be able to change the modulation.
Bill, I was wondering if you could answer a debate I have gotten over the features of the 14mz. When Futaba released the 14mz, I know the LCD required a harder press to operate than the newer versions. Did Futaba change them because they were broken? In otherwords, are they defective that way and need to be changed? DM
ORIGINAL: SoCalSal What make radio is it?? If a Futaba then you can buy the Futuba conversion right from Futuba or Tower Hobby. It is just a simple plug n play thing to do. Takes about 30 seconds or less to do.
actually to convert the 14mz to 2.4, the software must also be downloaded to the transmitter. Not a plug and play, but easily done by competent modelers.

RE: Blue Angel - Build
Cees, Fromeco also offers a a pinned switches. Insert pin for off, remove for on. Nothing to move while airborne. They offer this add-on to regulators for running LiPo or the new 123 batt. and for the badger. I have heard of problems with the pin being too sensitive w/ the Badger switch. Those cases, the switch would not turn off. Again this is all preference. I still would take a no-switch install (remove batt. plug from rec.) over any switch for reliability. Unfortunately, that isn't always practical. Heres the pinned switch add-on. http://www.readyheli.com/Fromeco_Arizona_Pin_Flag_Switch_p/06frcpfj-634.htm

RE: Blue Angel - Build
ORIGINAL: Taurus Flyer 8178, first, nice plane. Congrads but. In the other BA thread I was triggered about the way you switch the main power of the radio. My planes did survive mid air collisions in the past (gliders in the mountains) but cannot show you pictures of that, for that I do show some example pictures of a friend of me, Berusty. This plane did survive, but, I think when something like this happens with your plane the tilt switch will prevent you to have to repair any damage. First I am afraid the mass of the wire can give extra wear as result of vibrations of the engine or even, the friction forces (different coëfficients of friction of movements and static!! {again an example of my coal english}) the switch can be switched off during flight!! Second it is possible the radio is switched off in case of a mid air collision as result of G-forces depending of the direction, or the cable is hit. BTW, This message is completely my personnal idea, I always try to create most security (double poled switch, hide for any impact) but when the radio seller did show you this method the switch is prepared for that. I think Berusty reads this post and he will react!! I wish you many happy flights with this beautiful plane. Cees
Fromeco make one of the best "active" switches available. They are usually used in high dollar airframes, but I don't understand why there not in all planes. The price is the same as a heavy duty passive swith from the likes of JR and Futaba @ about $35. The active part of the switch makes it fail in the closed position and they also have switches that have no sliding toggle so g forces wouldn't do anything to them. By far the best and most secure switch I have seen yet. Years ago I never ran switches. I would make the reciever easily accesable and would remove the batt. plug. In the 80s I saw a beautiful scale plane demolished from a bad switch and never trusted them since... until I saw the Fromeco http://www.fromeco.org/Categories/Switches/ DM

RE: Scoop! Hangar 9 Phoenix 7...ARF!!!
The release of ARFs of collector kits does bring down the monetary value of the originals. Frankly I think some of the prices of kits have gone out of control. But sometimes, you just gotta have it! A few years back I won a Goldberg Skylark for just above $250. That was about the going price. Then came the ARF and the originals were selling for half that in a matter of a couple months. I'm still happy with my kit, since I planned to build it and not invest into it. Yeah, a light evening or two should be able to get all the Ultracoat (?) off, maybe a couple little details like fillets too. The P-7 ARF is one hell of an awesome treat. I'm really glad tha Mike didn't go for the boxy nose like the Tower Kaos. I think that makes the plane! DM

RE: Scoop! Hangar 9 Phoenix 7...ARF!!!
I posted earlier about offering an ARC version. I thought about it and I dont think that would be fesable. I don't too many people out there would want to (or know how to) cover there own plane. I guess it wouldn't make sense to offer and stock a version that only a limited few would purchase. Oh well, at least it will be available and in an evenings worth of time, you could have yourself an ARC! DM

RE: What to do with a Hanno head with a stripped glow plug thread??
ORIGINAL: bjr_93tz Thanks Atlanta60. If anyone out there wants to know, I drilled the remaining thread out with a 7.5mm drill then drilled in an 8mm hole from the combustion chamber side stopping about 1.5mm short. In effect creating a stepped hole with a 0.25mm ledge. This also means the OD of the glow plug washer is slightly larger than the OD of the brass insert at the top so it effectively stops the insert (and glowplug) from ''falling'' into the cylinder while the step stops it ''popping'' out the top.
Wow Brett, that is some really good forsight. I would have just drilled through. Now if I can get my brain to remember this one when I need to use it... [:)] DM

Dont for the Cosmos... It is a ide exhaust, I think this builder may have modified his to rear exhaust making it an Aurora, but this is how it looks... just with a side mounted, side exhaust engine. Simular to the Atlas. I would choose btwenn the Bridi UFO, Bridi Dirty Birdy, MK Cosmos, MK Atlas or the MK Curare. Too many beautiful plane to coose from. DM
