RE: What do you guys make of this??
I was originally thinking about the CG thing with this, but allthe other weights that I have seen that mount to the prop shaft showed their weight on them, in ounces. I also remember a lot of flyers in the 80s trying those out and removing them because they didn't like the way the engine performed with them on. When I noticed the 12x13 prop, I started to think that the weight was added to the prop shaft to help keep that prop speed up. And the weights I've seen have been seperate from the prop nut. This one IS the prop nut and with no weight measurements marked on it. I really just dunno? Both reasons seem to make sense to me. Speedy and Trixie, Yeah its a Lot of prop for a 61. The YS 61 AR does have a lot of power, but compared to a Rossi long stroke (the AR is also a long stroke) I dont think they would be that much different. Not 11x11 to 12x13 different anyway. I really want to run this and get some numbers, just not set up for it right now. I have everything packed up..[:o] Thanks guys for all your input. I think the odds are that it IS a balance weight for the airframes CG, but...[8|] DM

What do you guys make of this??
I had some time to start cleaning a YS 61-AR and found a weighted prop nut in the spinner. No big deal. I remember these a while back, but I think it wasn't too popular since you end up adding rotational weight to the engine that takes away performance. But this one looks different. For one, I cant find any numerical markings on it designating what weight it is. It was also really propped with a 12x13 APC C-2 on it. I'm starting to think that the weight was added to help keep the prop moving, but I dunno... What do you guys think? DM

RE: Tyco RC Drift King Battery Question
Converting your Tyco car with NiMH batteries would be perfect! You can still use your old charger that you've been using for the nicads. I wouldn't even think of putting another Tyco battery in there. Cost for those is usually higher and although I have never seen a Tyco batt., I'll bet it is in a heavy hard plastic case. I would rather have a batt. covered in heatshrink and save some ounces. 45 minutes on a charge from a 7 year old battery? [X(] How long was the charge lasting when everything was new? DM

I've been searching for any info on this subject with no luck. I found people completely swaping out boards and just soldering them to the pots and switches to get the job done, but I'm looking for someone who can pin out the Kraft Tx to match with available 2.4 modules and keep the Tx pure. DM

Sounds great JPMac. I am leaning that way. I really dont like the idea of having to remove the pack every time I charge it. Or having to purchase another charger. I am going to change my airborne packs soon though. The packs I'm using are old, but the cycle well. Any other comments, either pro or con on the idea of Lithium packs in older tx? DM

Help me decide, Lithium packs for tx or NiMH
I'm planning to change my tx packs. Should I switch to Lithium? If I do, what type should I get? I will also need a charger. Nothing too crazy, just something to get the job done. Also do you guys remove your packs to charge them? I really dont care about charging week to week vs. day to day. Thinking this way, should I stay wih NiMh? Or are there other advantages the Lithium packs offer. DM
ORIGINAL: Brian Dorff The amazing thing is that it was worth this much to 2 people!
I was just mentioning that elsewhere. 1 person bid 2000 and the winner bid higher. The bid was @ 1225 with 20 seconds left. the last guy put in one helava bid to jump it to 2075. I wonder what his auctual bid was? Another nice guy here in RCU picked up one that was pretty much NIB, (probably charged the batt. once) for 600 and was worried that he paid too much. Well he says he feels better now LOL DM

I would like to know what happened there. someone lost their mind.
2 guys did David. I was watching this for a while. Yesterday it was 480 then it jumped to 680. I was thinking, wow, this is probably going to go up to 750! 2 hours to go I checked again and someone bid high. 1225. I watched the PGA Masters and came back with 2 minutes left, still at 1225 then the winner bid, with 20 seconds left. He bid really high. jumped at once to 2075. I wonder what his actual bid was? This was just as exciting as the golf tournament was! Bryan, Yup. These guys really wanted this. The second bidder was probably thinking he had it with a 2000 bid... wrong. Would have been really interesting if this auction would set another 5 min. after each highest bid at the end. You know, bid at last second, become the highest bidder, and the auction end time changes to add 5 more min. so others can think about it. No telling where this would have ended. DM

RE: Anyone Flying the Turnigy 9x for Sailplanes?
It sounds like the 9x is pretty much an Aurora radio. I haven't looked into either radio in depth, just what I've been hearing on the forums. Are they the same? Can the 9x do as much as the Aurora? I'm in the market, again, for a decent system. I had a 14mz but I got ripped off on it before I had a chance to fly it. I have a couple older computer tx: PCM10, 10S, 10sxII, 8103, 8U super and a 9zap wcII. Been a while since I had them out and I cant remember their programming. Whould you recomend updating these with the FrSky 2.4, or get the 9x? I always flew my gliders with simple RES controls and simple mixing. Now I want to do more mixing and crow features. DM

RE: Better to build straight wings or wing with some turn up near the tip.
The polyhedral and upturned tips will have affect on the aircraft the same way, that being the roll axis. The upturned tips will transition smoother through the roll process than that of the polyhedral. Doing away with both will provide an aircraft more rsponsive to the roll axis and will hold a banked, or out of level flight, longer. If you are cutting your own wings, I would say to make both a Flatish wing, with just a bit of dihedral, and a stock version. Experiment, thats what the hobby is all about! DM

RE: Better to build straight wings or wing with some turn up near the tip.
From what I understand, The dihedral affects the stability of the aircraft by positioning the CG low relative to the wing. The wieght of the fuse at the bottom of the "V" shaped wing will act as an uprighting ballast. This will make the plane want to self-correct itself in a banked attitude back to level flight. This wont affect the speed of the plane, just the roll attitude. The speed is affected by drag from the profile of the airfoil. Weather or not to build a straight wing or a "bent" one depends on what flying characteristics you want. But in a sense of aerobatics vs. stability, not speed. DM

RE: covering a fully sheeted wing
The key with ironong Monokote on sheeting is to control the temp. Too hot will cause bubbles. But if that happens, let the area cool a couple minutes and iron again, at a lower heat. It will work. DM

RE: Nothin' Extra Build?
ORIGINAL: mikeh251 ya, the plane is a great design and would be great bigger or smaller. I am real worried about the balsa situation and that is really why I bought all those extra kits. I think the feds are out of control and don't have our best interests in mind. Look up what happened to the Gibson guitar factory recently. They apparently don't vote the way the current feds like and are paying the price with raids on their wood supplies used to make guitars. But I'm just a gun clingin bible thumpin freak from western pa. Sorry to vent but I'm just calling it the way I see it.
Very good point about the sudden demand for the balsa. It is playing a part in our hobby more so than inflation. I remember Sig, at one point, was unable to get any balsa at all. Balsa is grown in South America, so its an international trade. DM
