esky fm tx/rx reverse output
i have a fm esky tx and rx, i recently rebuilt my helicopter with a new(different) frame, and the elevator is reversed from the rx from what i need. now reversing it via the switch on the tx will reverse my stick, so that does not help. is there any way other than a servo reverser or rewiring(resoldering) the servo to fix this output?

no weird mix that i know of, so i guess that means i got a bad servo too?

i actually enjoy the tear down and rebuild, but then again i cant hover yet... another quick question..im pretty sure i know why, but want to make sure...when i throttle up the ail servo moves slightly more than the pit...that is to counter for blade rotation, correct?

No lift(after long headache) 450 Clone
Ok, I am "new" as far as flying goes. I decided to get a RC Heli some 5+ years ago, never learned to hover, crashed mostly, well I got a new frame(aftermarket), servos, and other misc pieces, and didnt really know much, but got it all together finally, recently after taking a break. Now after fighting with this, and that to get it perfect, atleast I thought it was perfect, it will not take off. The blades are all spinning the correct way, the battery is freshly charged and 4.2v on each cell. What should I check first(I am almost at my wits end with this thing)? The swash to make sure its level? Im just looking for some insight, before I go tearing it all down again, and go insane. Also what makes a "brand" a brand as far as helicopters go? The frame? I never know what to call mine, it started as an Esky Belt CP V1, and now all thats left of the ESKY is RX/TX, motor, and head.

Discharge 1 cell of a 3c lipo?
I have a esky 11.1v 1800 mah 20c lipo. I put it in my helicopter, and my esc went crazy, so I checked the beeps, and turns out its either over, or under voltage. So I whipped out my multimeter and checked each cell on the balance plug, 1 cell appears to be at 8.3 volts, while the other 2 appear to be at 4.3 volts. Is there any way to just discharge that 1 cell? All I have is the esky 2 & 3 cell 7.4v and 11.1v balancer charger.

servo linkage rod adjustments
I have a belt cp v1, that i played with a few years ago, and it was put in the closet due to some financial problems. Now ive dug it back out, and am ready to try to learn to fly again. I had gotten a new frame HDX g10 frame, but I never got around to setting the servo linkage rods from the servos to the swashplate. Is there a tool that makes getting the head level, and holding it, so adjusting the servo linkage rods can be semi easy to get set right? and/or a guide for that too? I plan on upgrading the head from the standard Belt-CP head to a high quality aluminum head soon as I get the funds, which should be about mid summer.

RE: Why are ducted fans considered so inefficient?
Both ducted fans and open props make thrust the same way, thrust is the forward reaction of accelerating air backwards. A fan typically has a small diameter and so it makes a given amount of thrust by accelerating a small mass of air to a very high velocity, that takes a lot of energy. An open prop, on the other hand, typically has a large diameter and so it pumps a lot of air but accelerates it to a relatively low velocity, it gives the air a lot of momentum but not much energy. Momentum = mass X velocity Kinetic energy = mass X velocity squared / 2 A bowling ball launched by a bowler has a lot of momentum but only a modest amount of kinetic energy. When it strikes bowling pins, the pins go flying. If you built a shoulder mounted catapault to launch a bowling ball using bungee cords or something similar, you would find it has a lot of kick. On the other hand, a .22 bullet has a lot of energy but very little momentum, when it hits a bowling pin, the pin might barely tip over if you hit it just right. However since the bullet has little momentum, the rifle that launched it barely kicks. Shooting a small amount of air backwards at a high velocity results in little kick but takes a lot of energy, it doesn't mean the fan is inefficient, if each joule (watt-second) of energy input results in air being accelerated to a kinetic energy of 1 joule, then the fan is 100 percent efficient. It's just that accelerating air backwards to a velocity of 300 mph in order to deliver thrust to an aircraft going forward at 80 mph results in the lion's share of the energy being used to accelerate air backwards. Think of it as the equivalent of an electrical impedance mismatch.

RE: Twice the scale, now how about the motor?
Take a piston engine and double the size of everything, twice the bore and twice the stroke, and you end up with 8 times the displacement. I once built a 2/3 scale version of a .40 size sport plane and used the cube rule to determine engine size. This resulted in me using a .15 glow engine. It worked out quite well.

Digital/Tail Servo question
I have a Belt CP v1/frankenstien(superframe, telebee gyro). I am still a hopper, but am trying to slowly upgrade my bird. I am not looking to get into extreme, or 3D flying anytime soon, just casual park flying. What is a good inexpensive digital servo for the tail? I have tower pro 9g's for the cyclic, and still using the stock esky belt cp tx/rx for now(futaba 7c fasst, or spektrum dx7 planned upgrade this summer). I prefer not to spend $75+ on a single servo, but want something descent. $20-40 would be my ideal price range.

The ST 3000 engine displaces 30 cc, that's where the "3000" comes from. In cubic inches, thats 1.83. Planes suitable for 30 cc gas engines should suit this engine also.

RE: E-flight apprentice
I bought one for my wife for Christmas and we have taken it out twice. The joiner rod takes all the stress and the two thick plastic covers hold the wing together and act as pressure points for the rubber bands so they don't bite into the wing. I have only flown it off of paved runways and the ground handling seems quite normal. Are you sure the nose wheel is not off center? How does it fly? Really well IMO, like a trainer should fly. Not at all underpowered either and it will fly for at least 15 minutes on a charge at cruise power. I'm thinking of changing the battery lead to a Deans connector just to be compatible with my other electric plane stuff.

RE: Power Starter or Manual flip?
I have eschewed electric starters all my life mostly because I tend to be an ornery maverick who refuses to be like everybody else. I also tend to build my own planes instead of just buying an ARF or kit. I just gotta do it the hard way but once I learned the tricks, it stopped being "the hard way". Even in high school, I rode motorcycles instead of driving cars and owned just about anything but a Honda. What was wrong with Hondas? 1: Everybody had one 2: They had electric starters Now if I can only figure out a way to put a crank on my car..........[:D]

RE: Power Starter or Manual flip?
I have never owned an electric starter and have no problems whatsoever getting glow engines to run. In cold weather, a small shot of lighter fluid in the carb venturi makes them light off like it was Summer. Once you learn how to prime engines and not flood them, it usually only takes one or two flips and the engine is running. I would rather keep my field box simple and light. Safety: I feel that a chicken stick can start an engine just a safely as an electric starter can. Just about every prop accident I have witnessed happened with an engine that was already running, usually while adjusting the needle or an unexpected throttle-up while the pilot was in front of the plane. Electric planes have caused some serious prop injuries and you don't even have to start them.

RE: HELP! OS 46LA reverse!
I have never owned an electric starter and all my fingers are still there. Never even had to get stitches or anything like that. Engines can be just as safely started with a chicken stick as they can with an electric starter. I have seen other people get bit by a prop and every one of those incidents involved an engine that was already running, usually while adjusting a needle valve or an unexpected throttle up while in front of the plane. There have also been some pretty bad prop accidents involving electric planes, and you don't even have to start them.

RE: HELP! OS 46LA reverse!
Two stroke engines can easily start backwards and run that way, especially if they were overprimed as stated earlier. It happens to me a lot. I just slowly close the throttle with the idle trim on the transmitter and there is a point right before the engine dies where it will reverse all by itself and run forward. When that happens, I reopen the throttle and fly. When a four stroke reverses, it's burning fuel that enters the muffler through the muffler pressure tap. All you can do with those engines is to stop it and restart after making sure that the fuel line to the carb is full of fuel. When these engines run backward, the carb becomes the exhaust and the pressure will blow the fuel out of the fuel line.

RE: Electric Starters
ORIGINAL: Hossfly Here's an answer for your problems. Anyway it has forever answered mine! #2. Winter Starting. Take a small bottle or a 2-4 Oz. fuel tank. Fill with 1/2 glow fuel and 1/2 (there about) regular gasoline. Give a good Prime to your engine through the carb. Flip the prop several times and then light the plug. Unless you really flood it, the engine will start as if in warm weather. When I lived in Yankee-Land, that was the normal thing for winter flying. A few drops of Propelyne Oxide works well, but easy to flood and it's hard to get and store. The gasoline thing is sooo easy.
I just kept a can of either Ronsonal or Zippo cigarette lighter fluid in my field box. Prime the engine like nomal and then just put a couple of drops of lighter fluid in the venturi and the engine lights off just like it's summer. Before I discovered that little trick, I almost succumbed to the temptation to get myself an electric starter.

There usually always is someone out at the ARCA field close to Manor. Just go south on 183 and turn off on highway 290 east go past the dump and turn right on 3177, go just a mile or so and turn on Lindell lane where the railroad tracks are and then turn right into a dirt road that goes to Capital City Trap and Skeet and also the flying field. Here's a link to a map and better instructions. http://www.austinrc.org/map.html
ORIGINAL: 200MPH Yes. I have had a buggy for about 4 years and a boat for the last year......now its by air, land and sea. The simulator I have is helping, just not there yet. I'm in Singapore now, but once back home to Austin, I'll find a fly field and look for a mentor/instructor. The way I understand foamies, just buy a gallon of glue and keep putting them back together. My goal is to go Nitro as soon as I have experience.
At least have an experieced flyer do the first flight and trim the plane. A beginner has an almost zero chance of flying a plane that is out of trim without crashing. Screw up the trims on the RC simulator on purpose and practice flying an untrimmed plane. Turn up the wind on the simulator also.
ORIGINAL: 200MPH kewl....thx. Did I screw up buying a warbird for a beginner? Everyone says the high-wing planes are so much easier to control.
Do you have car radio control experience? If you do, that helps. Even better is flight simulator experience. If you don't have either of that, you better hope the plane is truly indestructible. High wings aren't really easier to control, they are just more stable and you don't have to control them all the time.

RE: Which fuel???
I'll take 17% oil and a slightly rich fuel/air mixture to 20% oil fuel that's needled too lean any day. If your engine leans out and loses power in mid flight, close the throttle and land! If you don't throttle down, you're going to dead stick anyway. If you do throttle down, the engine will often keep running instead of dying and you will be able to come around and land.

RE: Control Surface Adjustment Tips
ORIGINAL: carrellh beachbrada, does your model list the control surface deflection in degrees, or does it list a distance the surfaces need to move? The aero works meter is a degree meter and the GP is a distance meter. I have the GP meter and it works ok. Sometimes it is hard to get it to stay in place when it's clamped to a thick wing.
Easy enough to convert degrees into distance. Open the calculator program on your computer, usually under accessories. Hit view and select "scientific". Enter the number of degrees into the number pad and then hit the button labeled "sin". Multiply the answer that the calculator gives you by the control surface's chord in inches or millimeters. The answer is the control deflection in inches or millimeters.
