RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
I do not know about the Thunderbirds but the Blues F18 have 3000 hrs on them before they are turned over to the team. You can check with the team. When I was a memeber of the maintence ,we had F9F Panthers and the only thing that was done to the planes was to take guns out and reblance the plane with lead in nose .

I check with teammate of the A4 Teams and they said the plane was a doing a dirty roll on takeoff. That is a roll with gear down and flaps extended on takeoff.

RE: New Panther
Thanks F9F for the info, I will look at the site. While I was Petty Officer over the Paint shop, at Miramar a Squardreon just came back from Sea duty, they had a Panther with no paint on it except Squadreon mumbers and colors. It had all magnesium outer skin,I donot remember if it was a 2 o 5 model The unpainted skin was not working out.As we only used Zinc Chromate for primmer and were having trouble making paint stick. Grumman finnaly came up with a primmer that I don" remember what is was. Anyway the paint stuck and the plane flew away to it"s next duty place. At this time we used Nitrate Lacquer for the paint on navy and Marines aircraft.. My brother was powerplant mech. in a Marine Squaderon Corsair in Korea

RE: Paint to match Ultracote Cub Yellow
Back in the early days planes that were fabric cover were painted with butrate dope., and metal parts were painted with enamel. There fore the colors did not have s perfect match. It wasnot until they started using the dacron did they paint fabric and metal parts w.ith the same paint. So color matched. I have recovered 35 planes. So i lknow a little about this. The last plane that i used cotton fabric and aircraft dope was a Sterman. In 1976 -1977 The metal parts was Lacquer
