RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Allan, THe pic on page 12 is the one i was thinking of. I will have to check my other books to find the other picture that i thought was the same D3. The other picture i found was not identifed in the book but it looked like it had a striped tail like 1626/18. I never found a picture that showed the strips were or were not on the tailplanes. I really like the un-painted alum panels look against the wood grain vs the white panels. you get a nice shine off them when the sun hits them. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
I thought there were (2) in the Windsock Data file. I thought there was a sort of side shot and there was one front the front of the plane looking to the back left side in this photo is shows a repair that was done to the fuselage. those are the only ones that I have found on it. I did talk to Pearson about his drawing and he was using the same photo's. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
We think alike, My back up was the blue fuselage with the lighting strike on the sides. I also figured if the staining didn't go as planed I would paint it. I think you will have a good result with your gluing method. I like the look of the stained wood grain and then the white and black tail. I have received many complements on the look of it. On the 1626/18 version have you been able to find any other pictures of the tail section to show the strips? I only found two photo's of the plane. Mark

Hey Allan, your D3 is really coming along great. I liked the way you described how to put the sheeting on. I'm waiting to see how the wing fillets are going to come out. I know you will do a great job on them. Do you have a picture of the scheme that you will be doing this one in? keep it up Mark

RE: I'm trying to decide what to build this winter
I built the hog-bipe and it flies great, it is small enough that you can keep the wings on when transporting it. It is a great flyer and you can put smoke on it if you really want to cram a smoke unit in there like I did. See my gallery for pics of the hog. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Allan, that fixture looks good. you may want to add one more part to it, one that will hold the brass fittings square and flat when turned upside down to be soldiered onto the wire. I'm not sure if the method that I used will work for you I laid the parts down on a flat surface soldiered the parts but my sides were not connected to each other. I stoped the wire about 2" into the fuse. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Hey Allan, Now that you have an OS .52 draw up for it can you rotate it so the pipe will come out the same as the RCV? I would like to see a front on view of that if you have nothing better to do? [:D] Also how much room is there above the fule tank? could you put another tank in there for smoke? Mark I think I just might be getting one of these to go with its bigger brother.

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Yes, that is correct Allan. I used my TopFlight Smart Cut trim tool to do the long cuts and just a exacto and sand paper to trim the sized to the correct shape the parts need to fit snug in place so glue will not come up from the bottom. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Allan, For the balsa on my plane I soaked (submerged) all my parts in the tub for an hour then took them out and put wax paper over the fuse and then put the parts over the paper and another part over that to protect the good part from and rubber band marks that would be created (yep founds out the hard ware on that one) when the part dried out over night or a few night. You will also need to find the correct piece of balsa for this some flex much more then other sheets. I made sure I found the one that I could flex by hand the easiest before I soaked them. Once the part is in a bent form or close to the final shape you can put your pattern on the inside of the bend and cut it out from there. I use a pattern to get the parts close and then put them in place and trimmed to size with a cutting fixture that I made to cut down the middle of the stringer. I found that this was the best way to get all the parts to line up with a nice tight seam. Mark

Builders Choice Products Nieuport 11
Has anyone built or flown a 1/4 scale Nieuport 11 from Builders Choice Products? I'm repairing one I received from a friend. I have the plans (1998) and the plane but I need to make new landing gear. The CG on the plans is 7-1/2" inches back fom the leading edge on the top wing which seems too far back for me. However, there are penciled in CG marks about 4-3/4" back from the leading edge. Does anyone have any experience with these or know if that is correct? Thanks Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Lyle, I'm glad to hear that you have found your way back to this project. I think I had to get 8 dark and 8 light panels. GTM panels are 16" x 60" so running them at 45 really eats up material. the big problem was trying to keep them seams straight when I was gluing them down. You can pull and stretch the cloth a bit when applying but the seams just don't stretch at all. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
This is a better shot at the fabric and the rib stitch fabric. I used blue fabric for the rib stitch per the data file and a few photos that found and Dave's SSW. P.S. and yes the know goes all over the world with us in our travels. Mark Petersen

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Allan, That picture that you have looking at the back of the D.III is what I use for linging up my fabric I spent some time trying to figure out how the fabric runs on it. From looking at that picture and the rest of the pictures I came to the conclusion that the top wing runs at about a 45 degree with the under side being run 90 degree to the top pattern. The bottom wing runs along the cord of the wing for both sides. In the Data file there are a few other really good picture to look at. if you look closely at the picture you can see the seam that I made. I used GTM (www.flygtm.com) 5 color light and dark fabric for all my surfaces. on the second picture you can see the seams cross on the upper wing. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Allan, I have two batteries packs up front for weight. I have most of the radio gear up close to the nose. I have a Zinger 4 bladed prop on it, the prop hub has (2) 1/4" alum hubs to hold the four blades in place. Per Dave's instructions the plane should be a little nose heavy, I don't think I added much weight to it. I think if you were to skin it with 1/32" and then go back over it with 1/32" for panels with a good amount of glue. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Allen, I think you may want to change the thickness of the skin for this. On Dave's it calls out to use 3/32" (2.4mm) for a skin. I think the 1/16" might be a little weak, it should be fine for structure purpose but for transporting and assy at the field. I spent some time when I put all the panels on the fuselage getting all the compound angles cut right to line up with the formers and stringers. If I were going to do a another one of these I would try skinning the whole thing in 1/32 balsa and then applying 1/16" balsa cut to the correct panel size and shape. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
Alan, The design looks great its bringing back some good and bad memories. For the landing gear and the cabanes struts I used landing gear hard wood blocks that have a groove in them. I then epoxy a piece plywood on top to close it up. I made it so the wire would be able to slide in and out during construction. Wire slides in about 2-3 inches on each side for the gear and struts. I found it really helpful to be able to remove them during certain steps of the build. Mark

RE: Siemens Schuckert D.III 1/6th scale
that looks great Allan, I used 4 servos for the ailerons two in the lower wing with torque rods and I mounted two (one per side like yours) just under the top alum cover on the fuse. how are you attaching the linkage before mounting the bottom wing or how do you attach the linkage after attaching the bottom wing?
