RE: EIII Restoration
Abu, To figure out what the plane (engine thrust) is doing, set down and think of what happens when you are flying at 1/2 to full throttle. If you have too much positive (or in this case, not enough negative) thrust, when then engine is running at the upper end of your throttle range eg. 1/2 to full throttle, it is pulling the nose of your plane up. What do you do to compensate? You put in down elevator trim on your radio. Now that you've got the down trim in, what happens when you cut the throttle and the engine is no longer pulling the nose up. Bing, I know the light just went off above your head. The down trim in the elevator (stabalator) causes the nose to drop dramatically. Now for the caveat. This only applies when the C of G is in the correct location. I can assure you that the CG of this plane should be no where near 30%. Get the CG back to 25-28%. Put the weight back in. I've not followed this thread like all your others so I'm not sure what airfoil the plane has. I'm going to assume it's not a symmetrical airfoil. If it's a semi or flat airfoil, when you get the CG right you will find that you will have a slight amount of negative trim in the stabalator. This is due to the fact that as we measure incidence on these type of wings we are not reading the true incidence. A flat bottom airfoil particularly always gives us positive incidence when we think we have it set to zero. As an example, this is one of the reason our trainers always have a bit of down trim in them. Viva was right about the throws on a stabalator. When you have the CG and engine thrust right you will probably find that you only need 10-12 degrees of travel. Also, a stabalator does not need to have as much area as a regular stab/elevator. It's much more effective than a stab/elevator. BUT, in our models and more specifically, in a model of this size, it still needs to be bigger than scale. It does sound to me that it's probably close to minimum size needed to fly the plane. It's nice to know that all those years of pattern flying have some value. [:D] If only I had gotten more trophies as recognition. [&o] [:)] Later Bob

Neil, It's not easy for me to accept, but it's just a fact that most pattern pilots do not like to pre-register for a contest. I've asked and pleaded for the pilots to pre-register for our contest but they just don't do it. Our club will provide the venue and I'll supply the leg work to run the contest. Those who show up will have a two days of pattern fun while those who don't, won't. For more info on the contest, check the flyer below or go to: amps-rc.com Bob

I first found Addison Pemberton's Boeing 40 website a couple of years ago. The plane and it's story caught my attention. What a wonderfull looking airplane. I would love to have a set of plans in 1/6th scale (88 inch wingspan). Even at 1/5th scale it would have a 105 inch wingspan. Still rather large. Bob

Glen, Congratulations. I've been watching your build from the beginning. You've done a fantastic job on your Bravo. I've always wanted to build one. I watched your videos and WOW. The takeoff looked like a catapult launch. I think she was in the air in 20 feet or less. I'm sure your takeoffs and landings will get better the more you fly your new plane. I hope you enjoy the Bravo for many, many years. Bob

RE: Story behind the blue Laser 200?
You're quite welcome. I've been a fan of Leo's since seeing him fly back in the 70's. Leo, Art Scholl and Bob Hoover made very big impressions on a young Indiana farm boy way back when. I've had three Laser 200's of various sizes in the last 15 years and I'm contimplating building another. My favorite so far was the 33% Lanier done in Leo's Bud Lite scheme. I'm thinking I might do the original blue next time. I've also had 3 Super Chipmunks all in Art's Penzoil scheme. I like both but the Laser flies better. I've always wanted to do Bob's Shrike Commander, but never could warm up to the idea of having a twin. Watching Bob fly that Shrike is something I will never forget. What an artist. Bob

The Blue scheme was a carry over from the Stevens Akro. The modified Akro (Laser) was originally blue and he stayed with blue after the modification. I believe he changed the color to red after aquiring the Budweiser sponsership. Below is an article about Leos plane. http://www.pilotfriend.com/flight_reports/reports/62e.htm Notice the "N" number on the tail of the plane in the picture below. It's Leo's plane in blue. Bob

RE: 2011 Silver Palm Contest, Miami D3
Rob, I hope you can make it. I think you'll like flying here. It's wide open with permenant box poles. Runways are 75' x 550' with Bermuda grass cut to 1 inch. One positive about the fire, if a plane goes down, there is no problem finding it. The fire department set a few fires to help burn off the rest of the bunch grass. This way they shouldn't have to worry about any more fires for several months. I'm not sure but the area around our field is about 100 acres. Burnt was close to 50% of that. It just happen to be the portion we normally fly over. We will be using the East/West runway (the runway running horizontally across the picture). If the wind is too strong out of the North or South, we can fly from the North/South runway. It's the perfect setup. We did use the North/South runway on Sunday last year. Bob

Just a quick note for those of you flying electrics. We have two generators for power (6000 watt and 5000 watt). They both feed power to battery backup units for smooth power delivery to our sound system and the charging station. We had three electric planes attend last year and there was no problem with power requirements for the chargers. Bob

2011 Silver Palm Contest, Miami D3
THE DATES HAVE CHANGED, MARCH 19 & 20, 2011 The reason for the change.......... Guys, the local electric company was working on the High Voltage lines West of our field and managed to start a brush fire. The field was down wind of the fire and in less than 10 minutes, 75% of the grass on both runways was turned to char. The North/South runway has no grass and the East/West lost 50% of its grass. I will ask no pilot to take a chance of getting ash sucked into a carb. Plus, at this time you cannot walk anywhere near the runways without turning your shoes and pants black. I'm sure a plane would look the same in no time if taxied on the runway. Last years contest was plegged with high winds do to an approaching cold front from the North. Moving the event to March should give us a better chance of good weather. The New Dates are: March 19 & 20, 2011. The field will be open for practice on Friday. If you want to come earlier than Friday, let me know and we'll make arrangements to have the field available. Please use the Pre-registration Ken has set up on the NSRCA web site under District 3. https://sites.google.com/site/nsrcad3/home/contest-registration If you plan to attend but aren't sure if you can make it, pre-register anyway. It's easier for me to deactivate you from the contest than to load all your info the day of the event. Entry Fee: $25 Four rounds Saturday, two rounds Sunday. All classes through FAI. Concessions on site: Breakfast and Lunch available both days. Expect something special. RE: Building vs. not building
I've been in this hobby for 30 years now and I've seen/done it all. I've built from kits, plans and done a few ARFs for myself. My first kit was a Bridi Bipe. Second was a Bridi Utter Kaos. Now those where kits that would teach you how to build. I remember when EZ first came out with their ARFs and Indy RC added them to the catalog. Man those were beautiful looking planes - until you saw one in person. Admittedly, the ARFs of today have gotten better than those EZ's of 25 years ago but they still are not as good as I can build. I "assemble" ARFs for other club members and I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly of a lot of ARFs. After building so many for other pilots I've come to the conclusion that I have no plans to buy another ARF for myself. I would say "never buy another ARF" but we all know that could always change. At this point in time, there is not one Chinaman in China being paid enough or has the knowledge to out build me. I look at nothing but kits, plans and short kits for myself. I won't condem anyone for wanting to fly an ARF. That's their choice but don't expect me to be impressed with your plane. Show me a simple trainer that a pilot built from a kit or plans and I'll be more impressed with it than any ARF at the field. One of my fondest memories is the first flight of that Brid Bipe. It may not have been the best flying or even the best looking plane in the pits, but it was my plane and I built it. No ARF will ever leave a pilot with that kind of feeling or memory. Bob Cox

Abu, Thanks for the link. I think I'll get the data files first before deciding on the Replicraft plans. Big differance in cost. I've been watching several of the topics on RCU and had noticed the good comments on the DVII "ARF". I had promised myself that I would never buy another ARF but the price for the DVII is just too good. I figured that by using the hours saved not building the plane to detail the ARF, I'll end up with a very detailed example. Bob

He certainly makes wire splicing look easy in that video. Abu: I've subscribed to every build since the Snipe and I'm very impressed with your ability to solve any problems you run into. I've been a metal worker, machinest most of my life and your work making the small metal fittings is just fantastic. I'm getting ready to make the jump into WWI scale with an Arizona 1/4 scale Fokker DVII. I've read all the negitives about Arizona, but don't worry, I'm buying the plane from a friend who already has it in hand. It's the prebuilt and precoverd version (unbuilt, unpainted and NIB). Since I won't have to build the plane, I plan to take the time to add as many scale details as possible. Most made by hand. In most of your build threads you mention using the Data Files. Where does a modeler get his hands on these Data Files? I'm trying to come up with any documentation I can before starting on the DVII and would like to get the Data Files. I'm also having problems finding decent 3 views online. Particulaly, I would like to find pictures, 3 veiws and any other documentation that will show all the hardware on the DVII. At this time I'm also researching color schemes and so far I like Hermon Gorring's all white DVII. Thanks Bob Cox

Rob, Scott is right. It's Fortana. Kees, That was my feeling also. I hate the scheme they put on the plane but for $299, I wouldn't mind recovering with good Ultrakote. Actually, I would just recover the wings and stabs. The Fortana also has a one piece wing. This doesn't bother me but I realize that it may cause a problem for some people. Just don't see how I could go wrong for the price, but I just want to know a little about Texas RC and the plane before laying my money down when I really don't need it for myself. FORTANA RC 2m from Texas RC
I've been looking at the Fortana from Texas RC and I'm wondering if anyone has one of these yet. I've been searching for a reasonably priced entry level pattern ship to recomend to pattern begginers. At only $299.95 this one looks like it may fit the bill. I've got an extra YS 1.40 that I could put in one, so I'm thinking I may order one to try out before recommending it to other pilots. Don't need another pattern plane though. I've got a Hydeout left to build yet. All comments are welcome. How do you feel about Texas RC? Do they offer a good quality product. Don't bash them if your experiance has been bad. Just let us know what to expect, good or bad. Bob Cox

RE: Another
drube, I loved that Extra. To this day, it was one of the best flying .60 size planes I ever flew. It will have a bit of rudder coupling, but even the new pattern planes have a little. Use a good computer radio and you can mix that out. My Hydeout needed just 4% down elevator mixed in with the rudder to solve the tucking in knife edge. The point is, all planes, including pattern planes are a compromise. No plane is perfect, including your Extra or my Hydeout or the next guys pattern plane. If you fly it enough, you will learn to compensate for it's short fallings. When you do move up to your first "pattern" plane, you will be a better pilot for it. Actually, you'll be surprised at how easy the pattern planes fly. For most of us, the fun is in the precision flying. For the rest, the competition is what they fly for. Honestly, the competition means nothing if you're not having fun. Keep that in mind and you'll do alright. Bob

RE: Another
When I started flying pattern back in the early eighties, I was flying a Tepo and an Utter Kaos. Took a 6 year hiatus. When I returned to RC I started flying pattern with a CG Chipmunk. Flew the Chippy until it met it's demise in a tree. I replaced the Chippy with a Great Planes Extra 300s .60 built from the kit. Best plane I ever flew pattern with that wasn't a "pattern" plane. If you build the Extra straight and true, it will easily fly the Sportsman sequence. The .91 four stroke is a good choice for power. I've seen some guys use a 1.20 but it's a little big (physically) for the plane. drube,I say go for it and have fun. Some guys will tell you that you have to have a pattern plane and worst of all, some would have you believe that you can't compete without a 2m plane. Bull! As Doug said: "The best, first pattern plane is one that is straight, light, reliable, and doesn't fight you trying to fly the maneuvers. It absolutely does NOT have to be a contemporary 2m FAI airplane." We should all be encouraging the new pattern pilot to try pattern with their sport airplanes. I remember some guys back in the day flying their first pattern contest with a Midwest Das Stick and in the '90's the CG Chipmunk was popular. You'll eventually want that dedicated pattern ship but for now, just go out, have fun and enjoy flying with your fellow pattern junkies. Bob Cox

Well, go ahead and tell me. Now just how Ironic is it that I'm the president of The AMPs club. Actually this is the first time I've seen the pic and I knew what it was right away. First of all, the person that took the picture is not into pattern. He was in Muncie for the IMAC nationals and the webmaster who posted the pics probably hadn't seen a vintage pattern plane in 2005. AMPs will be hosting their third ever pattern contest in January. I'm the CD. Most people in the US have a hard time recalling important US history, let alone pattern history. The people interested in vintage pattern today is so small, it's no wonder no one remembers the Orion. I remember because the group I started flying with back in '82 where all pattern flyers and my instructor must have had 5 or 6 examples of the Orion hanging from the rafters in his garage. He still flew one every now and then. Bob
